Hello Andy

Just wanted to say how pleased I am to see you’ve created an article for Selly Manor. I have been meaning to do something along these lines for a while, but I’m sorry to say I’ve never quite got ’round to it. In fact I haven’t been contributing much to Wikipedia for sometime now, so really must try and get back into things. Anyway, I hope you won’t mind me pointing out one thing, and that is where you say it was “Originally the manor house of the village of Bournbrook” because this isn’t correct; even though I do realise Selly Manor’s own website says it was “Bournbrook’s manor house”. It is true that the building formerly stood in Bournbrook Road, Bournbrook, but Bournbrook is essentially a nineteenth-century development, and, as far as I am aware, was never a village.

My understanding is that Selly Manor is actually believed to have been the manor house of the Manor of Selly, which was a sub-Manor of the much larger Manor of Northfield and Weoley. The Manor of Selly occupied the most northerly part of the old Parish of Northfield, and whilst it would have comprised what is now the district of Bournbrook it would also have included what has become the neighbouring suburb of Selly Park (the area that became Bournbrook and Selly Park originally being called Selly Hill), together with part of modern-day Bournville (including where the Green is now and everything as far south as The Bourn), as well as much of today’s Selly Oak (though not actually that part of Selly Oak where St Mary’s Church, Selly Oak Park and Lodge Hill Cemetery all are, as this area was originally within the medieval Weoley Park and therefore not in the Manor of Selly).

Anyroad, as I say, I hope you don’t mind me mentioning all of this, and once I can get my act together I’ll see about putting up some fully referenced additions. In the meantime, thank you again for creating the page and helping to expand the coverage of the old Worcestershire part of Brum on Wikipedia.

An arbitration case regarding behaviour around the use of Infoboxes in several articles has now closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

1. Pigsonthewing (talk · contribs) is indefinitely banned from adding, or discussing the addition or removal of, infoboxes.
2. Nikkimaria (talk · contribs) is admonished to behave with the level of professionalism expected of an administrator.
3. Gerda Arendt (talk · contribs) is indefinitely restricted from: adding or deleting infoboxes; restoring an infobox that has been deleted; or making more than two comments in discussing the inclusion or exclusion of an infobox on a given article. They may participate in wider policy discussions regarding infoboxes with no restriction, and include infoboxes in new articles which they create.
4. Gerda Arendt (talk · contribs) is admonished for treating Wikipedia as if it were a battleground and advised to better conduct themselves.
5. Smerus (talk · contribs) is reminded to conduct himself in a civil manner.
6. All editors are reminded to maintain decorum and civility when engaged in discussions about infoboxes, and to avoid turning discussions about a single article's infobox into a discussion about infoboxes in general.
7. The Arbitration Committee recommends that a well-publicized community discussion be held to address whether to adopt a policy or guideline addressing what factors should weigh in favor of or against including an infobox in a given article.

1. I wondered because it doesn't say so in the description on the Commons, nor is the pic in his category.
2. There is a ref using a template in English, that doesn't work in German.
3. I mean the English article, could say "Shakespeare scholar" for Timmins etc, so that people don't have to click. (No idea how many know to use pop-up. I learned the hard way not to trust that people can even read a diff right.) - I took care of the German.

The final promotion of Trappist to admin was logged today (see: dif405), as 86/35 (71%), in a borderline, close call by 'crats ignoring the warnings of 35 users who were troubled by harsh dialogues in his talk-page. This also sets a precedent: becoming a Lua admin while never editing a live Lua module, so we need to watch the Lua updates for "Script error" and beware trouble. I am not sure if a 75% consensus to suppress red-error messages would be enough, so we might need to contact another Lua admin for help. I have requested an RfA promotion to be able to help update the protected Lua modules. Please do not be discouraged, and continue to work in areas where there is less opposition. Thanks for trying to suppress those trashy error messages, and you are right how error messages are not the way of the future in live typesetting: nowhere in HTML do we see an invalid span-tag say, "ERROR: <span id=77> requires date parameter" as if "Error, error: does not compute!"  from the 1960s. I looked at it again: the light blue we have now will be fine for most cases, such as this. I think two things are desirable:

• have the subtitle the same colour
• be able to toggle it off for the few cases where no colour seems better, but then also for other title field such as "premiere" (similar to the option for "no italic title")

As expected, the WT:CS1#RfC consensus of nearly 3 weeks, already at 75% to suppress the extra cite messages, did not get implemented during the update of Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration. All of the cite messages were left at full display ("hidden=false") now exceeding 27 days. @Underlying lk: Thanks for letting me know; an impressive piece of work. Is it manually compiled or did you use a script? How are you going to keep it up-to-date? The list was compiled manually with the help of Special:PrefixIndex, which means that infoboxes without the right prefix (like Template:Taxobox) were added manually or are still missing; new infoboxes can be discovered with the Catscan tool if they're transcluding Template:Infobox, while deleted or merged ones can be removed by checking the TfD logs if they were nominated there, but keeping the list thoroughly updated without some kind of automation will be problematic. There are hundreds of infoboxes that could be merged uncontroversially, all the templates in the fictional character section could be replaced with one infobox for example. If you're thinking about consolidation, the category with the most potential is sports, there are 54 infoboxes just for baseball so the scope for mergers is vast.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 19:11, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. Hi Andy. Thank you for helping to introduce the voice intro project. I think it's an excellent idea. I hope as many notable people as possible are willing to participate in the project and that they don't feel "nervous" about recording their voice for Wikipedia. Hopefully notable people will agree that it's a good idea.

On a different note, being a Pink Floyd fan like yourself, I feel that the "Equipment" section in the WP article of David Gilmour isn't particularly well-structured. I've tonight divided one huge long paragraph into two lesser paragraphs for improved readability. But I still feel it would benefit from considerable improvement in terms of how it is structured to further improve readability. I wondered whether you would agree with that?
