"Publisher" versus "website"
Hi RevampedEditor. At Inaki Williams and elsewhere you have been changing instances of "website" to "publisher". Could you explain why? Template:Cite web states: "Do not use the publisher parameter for the name of a work (e.g. a website, book, encyclopedia, newspaper, magazine, journal, etc.)" and " Omit where the publisher's name is substantially the same as the name of the work (for example, The New York Times Co. publishes The New York Times newspaper, so there is no reason to name the publisher)". Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 23:59, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hello Robby, longtime no "see",
- I did those adjustments because it seems overkill in my humble opinion, why do we add more than one publisher/agency to a source? I also do not like the use of website because, since they are displayed in italics, it may be mistaken for a newspaper.
- Of course, if you or anyone else revert me i won't contest it, just please do not blanket revert the entire thing (since i rescued a dead source and added missing authors to some others). Kind regards as well, continue the great work! RevampedEditor (talk) 12:47, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
it seems overkill in my humble opinion, why do we add more than one publisher/agency to a source?
I'm sorry but I don't follow. Where are we doing that? As I mentioned above, we don't need to mention the publisher at all, let alone two or more (?).I also do not like the use of website because, since they are displayed in italics, it may be mistaken for a newspaper.
Works, whether they are newspapers, websites, magazines, journals, periodicals, …, are meant to be italicised. Why would websites be mistaken for newspapers? Robby.is.on (talk) 21:39, 24 February 2026 (UTC)- 1 - example: why must we have (source #17, for example) "website=Goal publisher=FootballCo Media" instead of just "publisher=Goal"? Hence my overkill comment; 2 - i cannot elaborate anymore on that in a way i get my message across, apologies.
- Attentively RevampedEditor (talk) 21:54, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- 1. Okay, so you're asking why the publisher is important at all. To give you an example: News Corp, owned by the notorious Rupert Murdoch, is a publishing company that is known to have conservative leanings. So if a particular newspaper is published by News Corp you get an idea where it's coming from. That said, I usually don't bother including the publisher. I know I've never included the publisher for Goal.com.
- 2. To clarify: I don't see why italics would cause websites to be mistaken for newspapers when italics are used for all kinds of works across all of Wikipedia (and outside of Wikipedia, in academia). I don't think I have seen anybody else use italics to differentiate newspapers from websites here on Wikipedia. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:35, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
