Question from Amandakclark (01:16, 28 October 2025)

Hi Rusty - I recently edited an article where I added two separate sections, each citing the same source. That means the source is listed twice now with different numbers associated. Was this the incorrect method? --Amandakclark (talk) 01:16, 28 October 2025 (UTC)

@Amandakclark: When you use a source multiple times, you should click the "Re-use" option, so that the source won't be listed twice in the References section. Happy editing! ~ Rusty meow ~ 04:17, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
Thanks! I missed that "Re-use" button. I've corrected my citations now. Amandakclark (talk) 16:08, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
Glad to see you've fixed that up! ~ Rusty meow ~ 22:19, 28 October 2025 (UTC)

is adequately sourced. There should be no less than three independent reliable sources for each
biography, including at least one source for each paragraph.

Progress ("moving the needle"):

  • Statistics available via various tools: previously, Humaniki tool; currently, QLever. Thank you if
you contributed one or more of the 20,473 articles created in the past year.

Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Rusty Cat. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences Appearance Advanced options Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Question from ArtSpaz (19:41, 4 November 2025)

Hi Rusty Cat.

This probably falls under things I probably should be able to follow from existing documentation, but I got an error so I wanted to check.

I have a few entries that I am working on concurrently. As I was researching, one contribution led to another potential entry. I had started the draft orinigally in my sandbox page but now have another entry.

From what I can tell I just need to enter a list of subpages into my sandbox page. So I used the format User/sandbox/sandbox name draft to make a list of working drafts but I got an error.

Is there a better approach?

Thanks in advance. --ArtSpaz (talk) 19:41, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

@ArtSpaz: If I'm understanding you correctly, you tried to create articles under "User/sandbox/<the name of the article>". However, that would be in Wikipedia's section for published articles, because the colon after "User" is missing; the correct page titles would begin with "User:ArtSpaz/sandbox". Question from Dr Aditi Y (04:44, 15 November 2025)

Can i create a page of myself --Dr Aditi Y (talk) 04:44, 15 November 2025 (UTC)

Hello! While creating an autobiography is not strictly prohibited, it is discouraged. The main problem is that you would have a conflict of interest that will make it difficult to write an appropriate article. If you are considering writing an autobiography, here are some pages that may help:
  • Your first article: Advice that applies to creating any article.
  • Conflict of interest: Advice for handling your conflict of interest.
  • Autobiography: More specific advice on why you shouldn't make an autobiography and what to do if you still want to make one.
  • Neutral point of view: If you get an article, it will neutrally discuss everything significant about you, not just the good things. Many attempts to create an autobiography have backfired this way.

ArbCom 2025 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Question from Minakshi Pillai (14:52, 19 November 2025)

Hey , I just reached 500 edits and have made edits to a wiki page , that page is in a really vandalised state and its related to a particular caste (South Asia) , would the mods mind if i twerk in a few right changes . --Minakshi Pillai (talk) 14:52, 19 November 2025 (UTC)

Wikipedia does not have moderators. I think you're talking about administrators. Regardless, nobody would mind a bit! In fact, I'm pretty sure everybody would appreciate that you want to actually improve the article. They'd also probably like (and even prefer) if you were to get rid of some of the obvious vandalism.
Cheers and rock on!

Question from Daly-RealEstate (22:15, 3 December 2025)

Hello Rusty,

Could use your help. I posted an article about my company and it was removed. Seems it was a conflict of interest as I included the company website.

How can I correct this?

Thanks for your help. Don --Daly-RealEstate (talk) 22:15, 3 December 2025 (UTC)

@Daly-RealEstate: Generally, we discourage users from writing about subjects they have a conflict of interest with, such as a company they work for. If your company does indeed meet our inclusion standards (called "notability"), it's likely that sooner or later there'll be an article written on it.
The page you wrote (I'd like to point out that you wrote it on your user page, meant to provide info about yourself to other editors, rather than starting a draft) was deleted due to being promotional. While I don't have access to the deleted contents of the page, I can tell you that this is a common thing; editors with a conflict of interest will find it difficult, if not impossible, to write neutrally on a subject.
If you insist on creating an article, you may do so (See Wikipedia:Articles for creation), however note that it is unlikely to be accepted.
I recommend that rather than trying to get your company on Wikipedia, at least familiarize yourself with how Wikipedia works. Check out our introduction page; get to know a thing or two about editing.

@Deerdapro: Of course! The one thing you should be mindful about is to not enlist other users to support an argument (e.g. "someone is trying to delete my article, can you guys argue for keeping it?"), that's not okay, but other than that, sure! ~ Rusty meow ~ 15:30, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

Is it possible to create a page to a deceased local music artist? Feel like he should have one --Ianabbott909 (talk) 15:22, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

@Ianabbott909: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia!
That'll depend on whether he meets out standards for inclusion, known as notability.
A local music artist likely doesn't meet those standards, but you could check (do a quick Google search perhaps) if there are any sources that could be used.

@Mirjist: I started out by making small edits. This allows you to get an understanding of article contents and structure.
If you decide to write an article, that's great! I've been on Wikipedia a few years, and I haven't written any articles so far, because I feel like it's a lot of work. I still mostly stick to small edits and maintenance, as well as monitoring disruptive behavior.

Manastha is an India-based online mental health platform which provides counselling, therapy, and psychiatric consultation services through online and offline channels. The platform aims to make mental health support more accessible and affordable. According to an article in ED Times, Manastha offers services internationally and has corporate employee assistance programs, while providing consultations to large numbers of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform has also been mentioned in The Economic Times as one of the online mental health services used by individuals seeking psychological support in the context of the #MeToo movement in India.

The movement to expose sexual harassers appears to have caused a surge in people seeking therapy, The Economic Times. Mirjist (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
@Mirjist: It's not exactly neutral; I see phrases like "offers services internationally" which feel promotional. You could add more sources as well. The ED times source looks promotional at a glance and the Economic Times article only mentions Manastha briefly, and doesn't talk about it in detail.
Also, please take a look at Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners on how to properly add sources.

Hello Rusty Cat! --Karmel Humphrey (talk) 21:10, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

@Karmel Humphrey: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Call me Rusty. Feel free to ask if you have any questions! ~ Rusty meow ~ 23:30, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
First question. I submitted an article to AfC. It says it is not pending review. What does that mean exactly? Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks in advance. Karmel Humphrey (talk) 07:20, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
@Karmel Humphrey: That means you created the draft, but haven't actually submitted it for review yet. There will be a "Submit" button in the bottom left of the box at the top of the page you can click on to submit.
Happy editing, ~ Rusty meow ~ 01:34, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Got it. Submitted, now waiting review. Thanks Rusty! Karmel Humphrey (talk) 21:54, 17 December 2025 (UTC)

Hey Rusty! Article approved! Thanks for your help. One other question. I want to provide the actual birthday for the person in the article. What is the best way to do that? Karmel Humphrey (talk) 03:54, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
@Karmel Humphrey: Congrats on the article being approved!
If you can find a (reliable) source that states the person's birthday, you can use that. Otherwise, there's not really a way add their birthday into the article, unfortunately. ~ Rusty meow ~ 04:00, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
That's what I thought but I was checking other articles and wonder if there was another way. Thanks! Karmel Humphrey (talk) 04:01, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

New pages patrol January–February 2026 Backlog drive

January–February 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol

New Pages Patrol is hosting a one-time, two-month experimental backlog drive aimed at reducing the backlog. This will be a combo drive: both articles and redirects will earn points.

  • The drive will run from 1 January to 28 February 2026.
  • The drive is divided into two phases. Participants may take part in either phase or across both phases, depending on availability.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled during the drive.
  • Two-month drive-exclusive barnstars will be awarded to eligible participants.
  • Each article review earns 1 point, while each redirect review earns 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be granted based on consistently meeting weekly point thresholds.
  • Barnstars will also be awarded for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • Interested in participating? Sign up here.
