Misuse of template:red

Hello, please correct the misuse of the red template on your User talk:SchroCat/littertray 2 draft. Template:red is for inline (string) usages only and cannot (and may not) be used in paragraph usages containing linefeeds. This results in any content within the template that is after a linefeed not to display in the color stated, and marks the page with the tracked high priority error html5-misnesting that has otherwise been eradicated from userspace by the diligent team of gnome editors.

If you are unaware, while WP:UOWN protects you and your userspace from a lot of things, it explicitly makes an allowance of other editors to make corrections to broken, invalid or misused syntax, and their byproduct errors, errors such as this one with the red template.

If you would like to see some error-free example solutions for your affected section, let me know. Regards, Zinnober9 (talk) 18:39, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

As the note on the page makes clear, I would prefer that this be left as it is. There is a reason behind it, but more to the point, it doesn't actually affect anything. Its use doesn't affect any other page, and it's incredibly useful to me at the moment. It won't be there for much longer, so it can remain for that short amount of time. - SchroCat (talk) 18:43, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
SZinnober9 is correct that this is a high-priority out-of-compliance detail that shold be fixed promptly. Your preference, no matter how clearly you assert it (and especially without any rationale or definite timeline as an in-progress transient detail) is not a trump-card here. It seems like it's so easy to do the right thing, assuming you want to have the multi-paragraph block in red: <div style="color:red">...</div>. Otherwise, I suggest you include a very clear statement what your goal is, making it clear why your page should be an exception to our rules or giving a clever gnome a hint about figuring out the right way for you to fix it. DMacks (talk) 21:15, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Looking at the template page, I don’t see any “rules” that need to be followed. Can you point to where it says this cannot be used? Thanks - SchroCat (talk) 22:14, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
The above is saying that visiting User talk:SchroCat/littertray 2 and clicking "Page information" in the sidebar, then searching for "Lint errors" shows a "misnested tag" WP:LINT error. They have to be fixed whether or not the requirement is documented on a template page. This is not a good time to express personal preferences about wikitext. Johnuniq (talk) 02:29, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
It's a reasonable point that the ton of <span>...</span> formatting tags should have a note about not using across paragraph (or list-item?) boundaries. That's completely independent of the fact that it is a problem and needs to be fixed whether or not it's clearly documented in the specific tool used to cause the problem. DMacks (talk) 05:22, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
I’ll remove it to bring this to an end, but it’s not something that “needs” to be fixed. It doesn’t cause any problems, doesn’t affect the site and doesn’t affect anyone else, being buried in my user space. - SchroCat (talk) 06:20, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

Annual RPI and Average Earnings for Britain citation

Continuing this topic you replied to on KJP1's page... If the inflation calculation updates inline with current prices, how do I go about changing the footnote template to reflect this? Currently, the calculation seems to be for 2026, but the text still reads "equates to approximately £X in 2023" and I can't see a clear way to change it (I'm pretty useless at source editing!). Help would be appreciated. Best, Mac Edmunds (talk) 12:48, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi Mac Edmunds, Looking at the Measuring Worth page, it seems to have updated to 2024, rather than 2026 (fill in the dates in the form there with 2026 as the end year and it returns the error message 'Ending year "2026" is not a year between 1209 and 2024'). To update this I think it needs to be done at Template:Inflation/year or Template:Inflation, both of which are protected pages. I think it's probably best to leave a note on one (or both) of those talk pages requesting the date be changed to 2024. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 13:09, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Okay – thanks very much for that. Mac Edmunds (talk) 13:18, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
