Sorry if I'm doing this wrong as I've rarely (if ever?) edited someone's talk page.

I noticed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilbert_(character) you changed the attribution of Eward M. Eveld's article from the New York Times News Service to the Wichita Eagle.

While the article did appear there, it also appeared in the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Kansas City Star, the Tennessean, the Portland Press-Herald, and many other papers. Under Eveld's byline for many of them is "New York Times News Service", so my thought is that this is the source and the article is syndicated in some way.

I think the best attribution is the New York Times News Service for the Eveld article, rather than one of many papers that picked up the story. BBQboffin (talk) 07:36, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

I understand, you'd most probably know better than me. I was just confused cause the link attributed it to the Eagle, and I thought it might have been a mistake. I wasn't exactly alive in 1990, so I wasn't familiar with that practice of papers picking up and syndicating each other's stories- though that makes sense that that'd be the case. Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give List of anime distributed in the United States a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Draft:History of anime in the United States. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. You also did a manual move of all pages from Category:Souls (series) to Category:Dark Souls, which does not preserve page history and leaves an unnecessary category behind, and is therefore the incorrect way to move categories. Bugger. I guess I didn't think about that since it wasn't exactly a standard page. Again, my mistake. Sorry, I somehow tend to overlook things like this when it should have been really obvious in hindsight. Simply put, normal users should not be attempting to move categories at all. The most people can do is request it be moved/merged at WP:CFD, or if it's totally uncontroversial, WP:CFDS. To answer your question in Special:Diff/1108044389: the problematic categorization of user pages into the template category was caused by Special:Diff/1106931607, which was fixed four hours later. However, the categorization caused by transclusion of the template wasn't properly calculated by MediaWiki (caching is notoriously hard to do, and it failed this time). To fix the problem, a null edit of the affected user page is all that's needed. Read more at Help:Category#Categories and templates.

You mentioned at WP:RFD that you created the redirect in order to shorten your signature. But you've already gotten halfway there (using the piped link to your talk page with the phrase "inquire within"). You could do the same with the link to your User page:

BTW this happened to me several times. It happens when you edit from a particular revision, or if you kept the edit window open for some time while the content changed in the background. If there are more sources, then I guess they should be added, but looking at the article it didn't seem to me like it made the notability of the game apparent. Plenty of games get cancelled, most behind closed doors, and those that are public knowledge will receive some WP:ROUTINE coverage of their cancellation, but most cancelled games aren't particularly notable unless they're super high profile cases like Scalebound. There's nothing on the page as it stands to indicate that the developers were notable, or that it was a particularly anticipated title, so it seemed questionable. It could quite be the case that it deserves merging into a page on the developers if that exists (probably not into the Activision page, since the fact they cancel games isn't in itself notable).

Anyway, I don't know, that was just my opinion based on my assessment of the article. I may very well be off the mark here. silvia (inquire within) 05:27, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Re List of birds of Great Britain: what criteria would you propose to divide "vagrant" British birds from the rest? Many of the listed "rare vagrants" are annual or near-annual visitors. There is no objective dividing point to be made between common and rare birds, so I think your {{Unfocused}} template is unjustified. The BOURC list is widely acknowledged as the definitive list of British birds; Wikipedia inventing its own criteria for inclusion would be a textbox example of original research. We don't ignore cast members of a TV series just because they've only appeared once. Dave.Dunford (talk) 14:08, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

I just heard from HumanBodyPiloter5 that this discussion was taking place, and I thought it would be appropriate to tag the article with a template saying that an issue had been identified. The point of the template is not simply to say that "this article is bad," it is to say that an issue with the article has been identified by one or more editors (HBP5, and myself, among the one other editor who commented saying that HBP5 has a point). This is why, in the template, I linked directly to the talk page discussion that had been started. Until consensus on the issue has been reached, I would argue that the template should stay, if only to tell editors looking at the article that there is a perceived issue and inviting them to discuss it or try to come up with a proposed solution.

I'm not an expert in this matter, myself, and I can't give a conclusive answer as to what would be most appropriate here. However, there are many lists on Wikipedia where inclusion criteria has been, by necessity, changed to limit the scope of their lists and make the list more navigable to the casual reader. For example, List of video games considered the best has specific criteria on its talk page which dictate what games may be included, and what the threshold for inclusion is, and, for the sake of comprehension to the reader, clarifies some of the most relevant criteria in the lede of the list.

Similarly, List of Sonic the Hedgehog characters has a very specific inclusion criteria, which, to prevent the list becoming an alphabetical compendium of the many dozens if not hundreds of characters that have appeared across every form of Sonic media, limits the list to characters who have appeared in at least two game entries OR at least two pieces of media across two different forms of media. So for example, Chaos (Sonic the Hedgehog) can be listed on the basis of being both in Sonic Forces and Sonic Adventure while a character such as Chris Thorndyke can be listed for being both in Sonic X's TV series and its spinoff comics, but a character such as Sage (Sonic the Hedgehog) cannot be listed, as she has only (as of this date) appeared in Sonic Frontiers.

To capitalize on your example of "not ignoring cast members of a TV series just because they've only appeared once," there are actually many Wikipedia articles which do just that. If you look at, say, Doctor Who you'll find that the "Characters" section only lists the fifteen lead actors in the series history, and has other pages for other characters. Companion (Doctor Who) exists to categorize the companions- and, hey wouldn't you know it, that page has a "Definition" section where it acknowledges that the matter of who is and is not a companion is quite subjective, but it tries to clear that up anyway. And it doesn't list every single character who has ever helped the Doctor on this list, there's List of Doctor Who supporting characters, and even that article at some point got unwieldy enough that an editor seemingly saw fit to give that list a split article to List of UNIT personnel, and the list and their baby lists go on. As another example, List of internet phenomena is a huge list of internet phenomena, and the section on "Videos" only contains a link to List of viral videos because at some point someone decided that the videos list needed to be its own thing. It goes on like this, really.

WP:OR does not prohibit making sensible editorial decisions such as these when lists get too long, or are seen to have too broad a scope. So, yeah, I don't know. It makes complete sense to me to split the list up. I think this is a bit of a given that there is not a medicine you can drink to turn you into a middle school girl, and I think anyone alive today knows and agrees with that fact... No? That said, I checked out the current version of the section and it looks pretty good – thanks for your edits. While I would agree that most people above a certain age are likely aware that there isn't medicine that instantly de-ages you and changes your biological sex, I think the thing that less people are likely to be aware of is that transgender people exist in real life and utilize more mundane, difficult, and costly methods of changing their gender presentation, and that the series is often regarded as more absurd in light of this by trans folks and those who know them/know of them. However, it would constitute a SYNTH violation for us to write that ourselves citing sources on real life transgender matters that don't themselves draw a connection to Onimai. So I feel that the Anifem source pointing out and elaborating on the legal absurdity of transgender medical rights in Japan through the lens of the series is useful, because it allows us to note the series' unrealism with regards to trans issues for those not in the know (and we can't assume everyone already knows) without it constituting original research.

With that said, I did respect the intention of your change, as stated in your edit summary, i.e., to keep the article on topic, which is why I sought to remedy that by removing specific details about the real life issues brought up in the article. With regard to this edit, WP:FILMLEAD says, "Any summary of the film's critical reception should avoid synthesis, meaning it should reflect an overall consensus explicitly summarized by one or more reliable sources." For blockbuster films, this is usually easy. There are many sources that summarize critical reception of blockbuster films, such as Entertainment Weekly and Variety. There isn't a need for individual editors to make up their own Rotten Tomatoes-style critical consensus, especially since Rotten Tomatoes already exists and be cited. As it says in the guide I linked in my edit summary, we don't need to add every detail about a film just because it's factual. Plot summaries on Wikipedia need to be concise and only include the detail that's necessary for someone who hasn't seen the film to understand the plot. In particular, the section I linked says:

"Do not attempt to re-create the emotional impact of the work through the plot summary. Wikipedia is not a substitute for the original."

Descriptions of shots from the film, such as those that you added, don't serve this purpose. Describing the film this way can't assist a reader's understanding of the story the way that the visuals can in context. Don't get me wrong; in the film itself, both of the visuals you described are incredibly evocative, but in the context of an encyclopedia, it's ultimately just filler. We're not trying to replace the film or spoil these details for people who haven't already seen it (spoilers aren't against policy when they're essential to the story, mind, but as with anything on Wikipedia, they shouldn't be included simply for their own sake). In particular, the phrase "He follows a line of employees singing a birthday song into another room," is incredibly superfluous, and is basically the definition of what that guide says should be cut.

However, I'm just one editor and this is just how I personally am interpreting and applying the guide in the context of this film. So, if you have an argument that the additions of these details is in some way essentially necessary to the plot summary, I'd suggest bringing this discussion to the talk page where other editors might be able to hear your case and weigh in on the issue. silviaASH (inquire within) 22:10, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
