Blocked

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing to prevent further vandalism.
If you believe that there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Cryptic 14:25, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Cryptic Seems like a 24hr block is enough here. It won't be april fools tomorrow. Polygnotus (talk) 14:28, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
This user's judgment probably won't be any better tomorrow either. Let him her try to convince another admin that these edits were somehow a good idea. —Cryptic 14:30, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Cryptic: The youth is/are sometimes a bit overenthusiastic. I promise you that they will behave after 24hrs. Also they use she/they. They are a goodfaith user and they usually behave. Thanks, Polygnotus (talk) 14:32, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Seems a bit heavy handed. How about making use of any of the bazillion uw templates beforehand? — DVRTed (Talk) 14:33, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Cryptic: wait what, did you think I actually committed vandalism? TheTechie (she/they) 14:42, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Cryptic, I agree with the other editors here. An indefinite is very harsh, unnecessarily so. Why didn't you warn her first? It's also not fair for you to call it vandalism. You do know what day it is, right? There is no reason to think that she'll continue this on APril 2nd. Chess enjoyer (talk) 14:43, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Exactly. I don't plan to do this tomorrow, I know what day it is. I didn't disrupt the mainspace, I abided by the rules for Fools. TheTechie (she/they) 14:44, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
You did not abide by the rules. Rule #1 is "All jokes and pranks must be kept out of the "article", "help", "talk", and "help talk" namespaces". While you did not directly edit those namespaces, you changed the redirect targets of many WP-space redirects that are heavily used in the Talk: and Help: namespaces, particularly things like WP:5, effectively changing the contents of thousands of posts in the talk and help areas of the wiki. I don't disagree that an indef is pretty harsh, but the disruption here was substantial (and not particularly funny). Writ Keeper  14:49, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Writ Keeper: those are redirects in the Wikipedia namespace. Please explain to me how that constitutes the Help namespace. Those could've been reverted. I was not aware that Help pages used those redirects; I was trying to change redirects with numbers in them to Oregon/US/BC highway numbers as a joke. TheTechie (she/they) 14:51, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Sure, but that was clearly a mistake. And that won't happen again. Polygnotus (talk) 14:51, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
It was a "mistake" in the sense that it was exceedingly poorly-thought-out and a bad move, yes. Writ Keeper  15:07, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Yup, a mistake which won't happen again. Polygnotus (talk) 15:29, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Good Humor
Your attempts to lighten the mood on April Fools day are sincerely appreciated. I am sorry that it resulted in a block, and hope that it does not last. Chess enjoyer (talk) 14:37, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you @Chess enjoyer. Happy April Fools day, I guess. TheTechie (she/they) 16:37, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Happy April Fools day, and welcome back! Chess enjoyer (talk) 16:39, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

Request reason:

My apologies if my edits appeared to be vandalism. This was an attempt to change numerous highway number redirects. I was intending to lighten the mood on April Fools' Day on Wikipedia and I thought that I was staying within the rules by only changing redirects in the Wikipedia namespace. I agree with other editors that this seems pretty punitive; why wasn't I warned? TheTechie (she/they) 14:47, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

Accept reason:

I've unblocked, based primarily on an insightful comment by Thryduulf at the WP:AN discussion. —Cryptic 16:34, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

See also above. Polygnotus (talk) 14:48, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Cryptic, would you object to an unblock here? For better or worse, this sort of thing is "tolerated by established consensus supported by the outcome of various noticeboard and deletion discussions" when the jokes are kept out of mainspace and tagged with the corresponding template, as these were. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 14:54, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
I'd object to an unblock today. April Fool's Day isn't universal, and WP:5 and WP:Speedy deletion in particular are heavily-viewed by new users. (Though it was the edit to WP:47, peripheral to a contentious topic, that tipped me over the edge.) —Cryptic 15:02, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Cryptic: since the problem here is April Fools edits, would you mind making it until April 2nd? Or something else more reasonable? TheTechie (she/they) 15:03, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
I strongly believe that you should not have been blocked at all. Chess enjoyer (talk) 15:05, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
So you are aware that today is April Fools Day. Why did you go straight to an indefinite block instead of warning TheTechie? Chess enjoyer (talk) 15:04, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Okay, I've started a section at AN to get further input. (TheTechie, there is a noticeboard discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard concerning you.) Extraordinary Writ (talk) 15:08, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for letting me know, @Extraordinary Writ. TheTechie (she/they) 15:12, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Wait, am I allowed to respond to the AN thread? My timezone is UTC-7, not UTC-12. TheTechie (she/they) 15:26, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I'm still failing to see why this block was needed. I understand that changing WP:47 is what triggered this, however, WP:101 is also a highly viewed page by new users. I jokingly changed this to U.S. Route 101 in 2024, along with WP:SPEEDY to Porsche 911. I also, like this year, changed the summary text on WP:Speedy deletion. Those didn't result in a block, I'm failing to see why similar behaviour should result in a block. TheTechie (she/they) 15:09, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
It was a bad idea then, too, but congrats on not getting caught until now. Writ Keeper  15:16, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Either way, I'm a bit disappointed. I might stay off enwiki for a bit. TheTechie (she/they) 16:39, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
