Four Freedoms

- News and notes: The English Wikipedia's second featured-article centurion; wiki inventor interviewed on video
With the promotion to featured article of Grus (constellation) on 17 May, Casliber became Wikipedia's second featured-article centurion, following Wehwalt's groundbreaking achievement last December. Cas's first FA, Banksia integrifolia, a group effort, was promoted on 16 November 2006. His first solo project, Diplodocus, followed in January 2007; he has rarely been off the FAC since. In a second story, Ward Cunningham, an American computer programmer who invented the wiki, was interviewed by the WMF.
- Featured content: Zombie fight in the saloon
Wikipedia editor Sven Manguard's work is quite underappreciated a lot of the time, most likely because people haven't heard of it yet: He's developed good relationships with game companies, and is thus able to get full-resolution screenshots released under a Creative Commons license for use on Wikipedia and elsewhere. This week's trove of new featured items on the English Wikipedia comprises seven articles, three lists, and four pictures.
- Traffic report: Get fitted for flipflops and floppy hats
In the US, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, and summer is definitely on people's minds this week, with summer films Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past, the apparently designated summer song "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea, and summer TV show, Game of Thrones.
- Recent research: Predicting which article you will edit next

A barnstar for you!
| The Writer's Barnstar | |
| Not sure if you've already gotten a barnstar for this, but you deserve another one, on WP:TFA day! Thank you for your incredible quality improvement work on the article Four Freedoms (Norman Rockwell) and other associated articles. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia related to freedom of speech. — Cirt (talk) 17:33, 1 June 2014 (UTC) |
Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Orel Hershiser's scoreless innings streak to FA status recently. I know you know all about WP:TFAR (specific and non-specific date slots) and the "pending" list, so this is just a reminder to use them as and when suits you. Many thanks. Four Freedoms - ambiguous criticism?
Sorry to express my confusion on such a old edit, but one sentence stuck out as almost a non-sequitur, confusing me.
- "Others have pointed to the universality of the Freedom of Religion as disconcerting to practitioners of particular faiths."
Maybe it is my own liberal bias showing, but this just reads weird. The only sense I can make out of it is, that individuals who would allow only for the existence of their own religion, are disturbed by the advocacy for the permitted existence of any other religions? Is that what was being mentioned? Or is it the implicit trans-national aspect that disturbs - you will be required to allow this freedom in your country just as we have 'here'. I'm at a loss how to disambiguate. Perhaps adding words something like 'exclusionary', 'exclusive', 'purist', 'cross-national', etc. ? Is there a chance you could go back and glance at that source article and glean the exact meaning of the mentions? (And thank you for all that work I see you did so long ago!) Great American Wiknic 2014 - Chicago
I'd like to invite you to add a Chicago event for the Great American Wiknic. This year we're aiming to coalesce nationally around July 6, but any date that is convenient to your local community works as well. And don't be shy about putting something preliminary on the national Wiknic page, it all helps!--Pharos (talk) 16:36, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Misty Copeland, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Metropolitan Opera House and Backstage (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Article history errors
On several occasions now, you have tried to update the article history of an article recently promoted to FA, but in doing so you have introduced an error into the article history. Please check when you update the AH: if there is an error, a redlink category is introduced at the bottom of the talk page. It may be better to wait until the FAC is closed and the AH can be fully updated; part of the problem is that you are doing a partial update. Thanks. Sarastro1 (talk) 14:00, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Worthy of good article?
Hey Tony! Hope all is well. I admire your work with article reviewing, and if you're not busy, I was wondering if you could give some quick input on an article I recently wrote? Article in question is David Hudson (pioneer); I'm hoping to get it to GA status, but was wondering if you could provide some quick preliminary input on whether or not it's close to fruition, and/or what could be worked on. I plan on working on the prose and requesting a GOCE review in the meantime. I understand the requirements for GAs, but this would be my first time working on one, so some input would be great. Thanks so much! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:18, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

- (talk page stalker) From a quick look, it looks almost ready to go to a GA review. Two things that leaped out immediately were the the Howe source referencing "p. 626 - 130" which sounds like a typo, and plus that and the Hyde source seems to be used a lot without qualifying it with page numbers (unless it truly is a bunch of facts picked off one page). I'd get those sorted out first, as they may cause problems with trusting the article content is truly verifiable. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:37, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

McDonald's Cycle Center is an indoor bike station in Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago. The city built the center and opened it July 2004. Since June 2006, it has been sponsored by McDonald's and other partners, including city departments and bicycle advocacy organizations. The bike station, which serves bicycle commuters and utility cyclists, provides lockers, showers, a snack bar with outdoor summer seating, bike repair, bike rental and 300 bicycle parking spaces. The Cycle Center is accessible by membership and day pass. It also accommodates runners and in-line skaters, and provides space for a Chicago Police Department Bike Patrol Group. Planning for the Cycle Center was part of the larger "Bike 2010 Plan", in which the city aimed to make itself more accommodating to bicycle commuters. Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley was an advocate of the plan. Suburban Chicago-based McDonald's sponsorship of the Cycle Center fit with their efforts to promote health. Environmentalists, urban planners and cycling enthusiasts around the world have expressed interest in the Cycle Center, and want to match its urban planning and transit-oriented development success story. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter
After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's
Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C,
Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.
The round saw this year's first featured portal, with
Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to
12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from
Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from
Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of
Sven Manguard (submissions).
The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
