December music

Quick facts

November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:48, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

On the Main page today Jean Sibelius on his birthday. Listening to Beethoven's Fifth from the opening of Notre-Dame de Paris. We sang in choirs today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:16, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Listen today to the (new) Perplexities after Escher. - Congratulations to being elected! Could you look at Samuel Barber and tell me if you miss something in his infobox? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:42, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antônio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:19, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

I come to fix the cellist's name, with a 10-years-old DYK and new pics - look for red birds --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:46, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

Merry Christmas!

A very happy Christmas and New Year to you!

Have a great Christmas, and may 2025 bring you joy, happiness – and no trolls or vandals!

Hello

Hi, I'm OWaunTon and I was requested by user Bilby to ask some advice about administrators on here. OWaunTon (talk) 14:04, 5 February 2025 (UTC)

Hi @OWaunTon, great to meet you! I've had a look at your history, and I see you requested bureaucratship recently. Well, I can tell you, that's a dull job - it's only useful about half a dozen times a year, and even then, it's just about adding a comment somewhere. It's probably one of the least useful roles on Wikipedia these days.
You mention advice about administrators - well, I'm afraid that the "administrator" user-right is quite difficult to get on Wikipedia these days, you need to have the confidence of the community, and that can often mean tens of thousands of edits, plus many years of work. I could offer my magic formula as route to adminship, but it's not a quick one! But have no fear - you are already an admin, by other websites standards. You can edit almost any article, offer advice, categorise, create pages - these are things that you just can't do elsewhere, on say, a news website.
Given your stated goal though "I want to help users and update articles.", I do have some suggestions for you. Have you ever been to the WP:Teahouse? That's a place where new users are directed for friendly advice, and volunteers helping out there would always be appreciated. Otherwise keep doing what you're doing, there's always lots to be getting on with! WormTT(talk) 09:26, 6 February 2025 (UTC)

Not an Arb question as such, but ...

Hello, Worm. Congratulations on getting elected in the voting a few months ago, during the process of which you kindly responded to a question I'd hoped to get answers to from all the candidates. I thought to turn to one of you longtimer Arbs to ask a different kind of question now, and you sort of came to mind as someone who just might be able to help.

I'm looking for some senior editor who has a lot of COPYVIO experience to help me figure out what to do with a situation I've just discovered in an article on which I've spent a lot of time working before discovering it's riddled with COPYVIO. Simply posting a message about it on the article's Talk page won't be of much real help in this case. Augnablik (talk) 22:35, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

Worm, please forget about replying to my above message ... my mentor came to my rescue and seems to have found the right person to address the COPYVIO situation. Although he'd been offering me advice when I first asked what to do about it, I thought he'd taken it as far as he thought he should go and had sort of turned me loose to follow through: a good strategy with a toddler editor like me moving along into her tween years in Wikidom, in need of guidance to the point of being ready to apply it and move forward. Augnablik (talk) 14:28, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
Apologies for the delay in replying, I'm away for a bit and not getting to my computer as much. I'm glad you've got things sorted. WormTT(talk) 16:45, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

Closure

Just a bit of a side tangent because I don't want to keep talking on Tamzin's talk page, but saying what I just did was like a weight off my shoulders and it's way better than holding it in. I'm allowed to stand up for myself and ask that someone consider the impact their actions may have. That sense of closure counts to me as an outcome I want. Tamzin is free to disagree but I don't think I'll be changing my mind on this anytime soon, as it's still how I think about the situation a month after it happened. It is possible to still think about things rationally when you're experiencing a tense emotional situation. I've been doing that for most of my life. But I've said what needed to be said in order to move on. Courtesy ping to BusterD. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 13:39, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

Saying what you need to say to get a sense of closure is one thing, but there are factors beyond that - such as the location and manner of saying it. You'd approached Tamzin on her page, which would invite reply - and developing into an ongoing discussion. It was only going to escalate tensions. I'm not asking you to explain or justify your actions, but please accept my advice here that prolonging the conversation is not helpful to yourselves or the encyclopedia. WormTT(talk) 13:51, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
She came to my talk page before, too. When you're concerned about ADMINCOND issues, you bring it up with the admin in question. It's scary for non-admins to talk to admins about their conduct so I figured that I might be one of the only people willing to do so. I see the discussion as a good thing and helping both the encyclopedia and myself. I'm not going to take it further than that because I generally believe Tamzin to be a good admin most of the time, but my ADMINCOND concerns were genuine and serious. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:37, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
I'll just add that, as a fellow admin and editor, it wasn't the content of the discussion but the fact that you chose to have this discussion on the project, in the public eye, rather than in private that concerned me. I guess that helped with the "closure" but you are allowing yourselves to be vulnerable in a space where not everyone, from other editors to trolls, has your best interests at heart and edits on this project are preserved forever unless they are revision deleted. I'm glad you got a weight off of your shoulders but I also urge you to protect yourself when you are sharing your feelings and remember that Wikipedia is a public space, not a private one. Take care. Liz Read! Talk! 22:49, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
I don't trust Tamzin enough to have such a discussion in private. She said those things about me publically and if she's willing do that, I genuinely don't trust her enough to talk to her in private about it. I am fine with being open about my feelings. It's my general approach that the world is a better place when people are open and honest about how they feel. I understand not everyone is the same way and that's their decision to make. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 23:07, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
Everyone please remember that Clovermoss getting a sense of closure is the most important thing. Everything else is secondary, everyone else is secondary. Floquenbeam (talk) 23:55, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam: I would not say my feelings are the most important thing. They aren't worthless, though. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:16, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
@Clovermoss I don't agree this is an ADMINCOND issue. I think you've correctly identified this as a "you needing closure" issue. Closure is difficult, so I'm going to say, here and now - that what you have is likely to be the best you get. WormTT(talk) 09:36, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

The European Destubathon

You are invited to participate in The European Destubathon in April. Almost $3000 in Amazon voucher prizes which can be used to buy books for content, though it can also be treated as an editathon if you're not interested in competing! Minimum content to be added to each article just to ensure that they're over a stub, though longer expansions also welcome. Entries at the end of the contest will be tipped into the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge and European Challenge. Previous contests were really enjoyable and I'm hoping this one will be too! Sign up if interested. Thanks! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:22, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

You sure you and User:Staceydolxx aren't interested Wormster? ;-) You were something of a duo in past contests and I enjoyed you being around! There's 65 prizes going into this! You can just work on England stubs if not interested in the continent anyway. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:47, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

No Armenia, Georgia or Azerbaijan in this sorry, too far east, will be included in an Asian contest instead. A round 50 entities.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:13, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

Feel free to remove them - We got them from the European stub list (That you link to in big bold letters!) WormTT(talk) 14:06, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

The World Destubathon

You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13, partly due to me having hayfever during that period and not wanting to run it throughout July or August in the hotter summer and will be run then unless multiple editors object. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much to patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries. Sign up if interested! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:18, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

Borrowing your adoption course

Hi, I have an adoptee that would like to do an adoption course, wondering if I could use yours. Cheers, GoldRomean (talk) 01:58, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

Of course - it's all at User:WormTT/Adopt, though it's likely to be a bit out of date. As is the norm on Wikipedia, I took it from someone else User:Hersfold, expanded and adapted. He may have done the same. I know that other users have already done the same to my course - I'm quite happy with that, but I appreciate the request WormTT(talk) 12:12, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
Thanks! Yep I'll probably be making some minor changes of my own as well :). GoldRomean (talk) 13:17, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

BoT 2025

Hi Dave. I realise you've taken very much a back seat these days, but if you still turn out for elections, this is my take on an upcoming biggie: User:Kudpung/BoT 2025 election guide. Cheers, Chris Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:13, 20 July 2025 (UTC)

About your page

I had a page in your userspace pointed out to me, because I'm on that list, and the person pointing it out thought the dates for my admin actions looked pretty wonky. Given that I had carried out a logged action only admins can make on 2025-07-13, and had more than 10 admin actions this month alone, I'm very confused as to why your charts seem to be ignoring a segment of admin-only logged actions. A lot of my admin actions are user right changes (specifically granting IPBE), and these seem to not be counted in your chart. I'm not sure how it's being maintained; I'm sure it could be done by a bot, and someone would probably be happy to write you one if you're not into doing so yourself. I'll leave it to you to figure out how to proceed. Best, Risker (talk) 02:11, 19 July 2025 (UTC)

Fair point Risker. I've only accounted for Block / Protect / Delete in my page - I'll see if I can find some time to update. I wasn't expecting it to be maintained, I'm just using a script to scrape the logs, and it requires a chunk of manual intervention for those individuals with unusual names and very low counts. But since people asked, I dug them out and ran them again. WormTT(talk) 08:00, 21 July 2025 (UTC)

I'll let you finish

You're like 30 seconds ahead of me so I keep stepping on your heels. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 12:08, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

@ScottishFinnishRadish I appreciate it :) But I've got a different piece of work I'm putting off, I'm happy to take the back seat for the next hour or so - you go ahead! WormTT(talk) 12:12, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
I'm wrapped up with my big edits for now, gotta do a bit more stewing. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 12:52, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Worm That Turned. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences Appearance Advanced options Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

ArbCom 2025 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:28, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
