Hi @OWaunTon, great to meet you! I've had a look at your history, and I see you requested bureaucratship recently. Well, I can tell you, that's a dull job - it's only useful about half a dozen times a year, and even then, it's just about adding a comment somewhere. It's probably one of the least useful roles on Wikipedia these days.

You mention advice about administrators - well, I'm afraid that the "administrator" user-right is quite difficult to get on Wikipedia these days, you need to have the confidence of the community, and that can often mean tens of thousands of edits, plus many years of work. I could offer my magic formula as route to adminship, but it's not a quick one! But have no fear - you are already an admin, by other websites standards. You can edit almost any article, offer advice, categorise, create pages - these are things that you just can't do elsewhere, on say, a news website.

Given your stated goal though "I want to help users and update articles.", I do have some suggestions for you. Have you ever been to the WP:Teahouse? That's a place where new users are directed for friendly advice, and volunteers helping out there would always be appreciated. I thought to turn to one of you longtimer Arbs to ask a different kind of question now, and you sort of came to mind as someone who just might be able to help.

I'm looking for some senior editor who has a lot of COPYVIO experience to help me figure out what to do with a situation I've just discovered in an article on which I've spent a lot of time working before discovering it's riddled with COPYVIO. Just a bit of a side tangent because I don't want to keep talking on Tamzin's talk page, but saying what I just did was like a weight off my shoulders and it's way better than holding it in. I'm allowed to stand up for myself and ask that someone consider the impact their actions may have. That sense of closure counts to me as an outcome I want. Tamzin is free to disagree but I don't think I'll be changing my mind on this anytime soon, as it's still how I think about the situation a month after it happened. It is possible to still think about things rationally when you're experiencing a tense emotional situation. I've been doing that for most of my life. Saying what you need to say to get a sense of closure is one thing, but there are factors beyond that - such as the location and manner of saying it. You'd approached Tamzin on her page, which would invite reply - and developing into an ongoing discussion. It was only going to escalate tensions. I'm not asking you to explain or justify your actions, but please accept my advice here that prolonging the conversation is not helpful to yourselves or the encyclopedia. She came to my talk page before, too. When you're concerned about ADMINCOND issues, you bring it up with the admin in question. It's scary for non-admins to talk to admins about their conduct so I figured that I might be one of the only people willing to do so. I see the discussion as a good thing and helping both the encyclopedia and myself. I'm not going to take it further than that because I generally believe Tamzin to be a good admin most of the time, but my ADMINCOND concerns were genuine and serious. I'll just add that, as a fellow admin and editor, it wasn't the content of the discussion but the fact that you chose to have this discussion on the project, in the public eye, rather than in private that concerned me. I guess that helped with the "closure" but you are allowing yourselves to be vulnerable in a space where not everyone, from other editors to trolls, has your best interests at heart and edits on this project are preserved forever unless they are revision deleted. I'm glad you got a weight off of your shoulders but I also urge you to protect yourself when you are sharing your feelings and remember that Wikipedia is a public space, not a private one. Take care. I don't trust Tamzin enough to have such a discussion in private. She said those things about me publically and if she's willing do that, I genuinely don't trust her enough to talk to her in private about it. I am fine with being open about my feelings. It's my general approach that the world is a better place when people are open and honest about how they feel. I understand not everyone is the same way and that's their decision to make. I had a page in your userspace pointed out to me, because I'm on that list, and the person pointing it out thought the dates for my admin actions looked pretty wonky. Given that I had carried out a logged action only admins can make on 2025-07-13, and had more than 10 admin actions this month alone, I'm very confused as to why your charts seem to be ignoring a segment of admin-only logged actions. A lot of my admin actions are user right changes (specifically granting IPBE), and these seem to not be counted in your chart. I'm not sure how it's being maintained; I'm sure it could be done by a bot, and someone would probably be happy to write you one if you're not into doing so yourself. Fair point Risker. I've only accounted for Block / Protect / Delete in my page - I'll see if I can find some time to update. I wasn't expecting it to be maintained, I'm just using a script to scrape the logs, and it requires a chunk of manual intervention for those individuals with unusual names and very low counts. Hello, Worm That Turned. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

• When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
• All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
• A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
• As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
  • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
  • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

• Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
• Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.

Impact for administrators

• It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
• It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
• Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

• Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
• Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
• See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

• It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Enable the user info card
  • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
• Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
• Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
• The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
