Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci was the jury president for the main competition. He was previously the president of the jury at the 40th edition in 1983.[2][3] Italian actress Eva Riccobono hosted the opening and closing nights of the festival.[4]

The Golden Lion was awarded to Sacro GRA by Gianfranco Rosi, marking the first documentary film to ever win it.[5][6][7]

American filmmaker William Friedkin received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during the festival.[8]

The festival opened with Gravity by Alfonso Cuarón,[9] and closed with Amazonia by Thierry Ragobert.
