  • Propose merging Category:Indo-Trinidadian and Tobagonian people to Category:People of Indo-Trinidadian descent
Nominator's rationale: Indo-Trinidadian and Tobagonian people is a duplicate of the category with a proper naming convention, "People of Indo-Trinidadian descent". The latter category should be a parent category for people of all nationalities who have Indo-Trinidadian ethnicity whether Category:Trinidad and Tobago people of Indian descent or Category:American people of Indo-Trinidadian descent. Similarly, Category:Trinidad and Tobago people of African descent is the main category for Afro–Trinidadians and Tobagonians. Arbor to SJ (talk) 23:05, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Alt merge to Category:Trinidad and Tobago people of Indian descent, as far as I can see the articles are about people who lived in Trinidad and Tobago themselves. The descent part does not apply to Trinidad and Tobago but only to India. The category may also be purged quite a bit: not many articles mention Indian descent, even fewer provide sources for it. Nominator's rationale: I think that we should broaden this category to include more than just American tempera painters.a SMasonGarrison 16:22, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment, this is a defining characteristic for only a few articles in this category. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:41, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Leaning Delete. The specific medium of painting an artist used/uses wouldn't usually meet WP:DEFINING. I see that in the cases of Paul Cadmus and Jared French egg tempera is mentioned in the ledes of their articles, but that is unusual. Most notable painters in this medium would be Italian and at the earlier end of the Renaissance. Ham II (talk) 08:13, 10 August 2025 (UTC)

  • Thanks for asking! I agree with Ham II above (also Marcoc) , & don't see much point in a category for painters from before the conquest of oil painting. I could just about see a category British artists post 1800 who used it, & those of other countries, but the number for whom it would really be defining is probably small. Category:Non-fiction literature by nationality

The result of the discussion was: rename. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 02:03, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 October 18#Category:Culture by nationality, by which Category:Literature by nationality was redirected to Category:Literature by country. Apparently, it was forgotten to also rename child Category:Non-fiction literature by nationality to Category:Non-fiction literature by country, which Commons does have: c:Category:Non-fiction literature by country. Furthermore, it is in the Category:Literary genres by country tree, and all its child categories are also in the Category:Literature by country tree (except Category:Biographies by nationality and Category:Essays by nationality – which I plan to address in a follow-up). NLeeuw (talk) 11:25, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
PS: Courtesy ping to @PARAKANYAA and Marcocapelle: This is indirectly related to the recent opposed speedies concerning "Norwegian encyclopedias" and "Russian-language encyclopedias". I've written out the category trees on paper, and found out there are several issues elsewhere that caused some confusion that need to be addressed first. One of them is the fact that there is no Category:Non-fiction literature by language tree; there is only a Category:Non-fiction literature by nationality (of which Category:Norwegian encyclopedias is a child), but according to the 2016 decision and wider category structure, it should be named Non-fiction literature by country. I'm trying to address that in this CfR. Good day, NLeeuw (talk) 11:34, 17 August 2025 (UTC)

  • Support, sure. Nationality is a confused word. PARAKANYAA (talk) 20:59, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: I was going to mention Commons categories but you beat me to it! Just one point I would like to make, all of the Commons categories are indeed "by country" i.e. "from Australia" and not "Australian". Did the 2016 discussion account for this? I ask because Category:Literature by country still is divided by nationalities and not countries. Whereas I see you started the renamings of the Culture categories at Fooian culture to Culture of Fooland (part 1), part 2, part 3, and part 4, all of which happened in 2023. Οἶδα (talk) 21:03, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
Apparently not: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 October 18#Category:Culture by nationality never mentioned 'Commons', nor linked to it. CFD and CFDS discussions usually do not take Commons into account; I am one of few regulars who often compares the category names, trees and structures over there for context. Usually, Commons has less ambiguous catnames, but sometimes it can be just as inconsistent as Enwiki.
As to whether Category:Literature by country still is divided by nationalities and not countries., that seems to be only correct for 4 people subcategories:
    1. Category:Literary critics by nationality
    2. Category:Literary historians by nationality
    3. Category:Works by writer nationality
    4. Category:Writers by nationality
I think 1, 2, and 4 might be in the wrong tree. Literature is, quite simply, about texts, not about the people who wrote or studied those texts. They belong in the Category:People by occupation tree. I'd recommend converting child categories 1, 2, and 4 into Template:Category see also notes at the top of Category:Literature by country. Category 3 is fine, because 'Work' is the subject in this catname, not 'writer'. NLeeuw (talk) 15:02, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
Sorry for the confusion. I was actually asking if the 2016 discussion, about a container category, accounted for the required subsequent renaming of its subcategories to reflect "by country" instead of "by nationality". For example, Category:Literature by country remains subcategorized Abkhaz literature, Afghan literature, Albanian literature, Algerian literature, American literature and so on, rather than Literature of Abkhazia, Literature of Afghanistan, Literature of Albania, Literature of Algeria, Literature of the United States and so on. Οἶδα (talk) 20:51, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
Oh! Well, I'm not sure, but I did happen to notice earlier this week that some main articles take the latter form, such as Literature of Moldova, even though the main category is Category:Moldovan literature. We could speedy-rename the latter per WP:C2D.
Some of the many other examples include:
    and so on.
In addition, I'd like to ping @Clarityfiend: for the information of the grammar police, that many of the other articles which follow the Fooian literature formula actually read the grammatically incorrect form Fooland literature. E.g.
    and so on.
Given that these are usually categorised as child categories of Culture of Fooland categories, with identical main article titles, I'm leaning heavily towards making Literature of Fooland the universal standard for both article titles and catnames per WP:TITLECON, WP:C2B, WP:C2C, WP:C2D, and so on. That would finally bring an end to the permanent ambiguities of article titles like Spanish literature, which should be properly distinguished as Spanish-language literature (or Literature in Spanish?) and Literature of Spain. NLeeuw (talk) 21:37, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
PS: Note that there is a main article American literature in Spanish, so just Literature in Spanish is a very logical name. NLeeuw (talk) 21:47, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
PPS: And to nobody's big surprise, Commons:Category:Literature by country already has only child categories named Literature of Fooland. Commons is usually a step ahead of English Wikipedia in establishing clear and unambiguous catnames. Fooian is notoriously ambiguous in countless catnames, and should be avoided wherever and whenever possible. Cheers, NLeeuw (talk) 22:07, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for breaking that down. I usually prefer Commons category names, especially for their rejection of all the nationality intersections that have become commonplace. Good luck changing this format though, in regards to both categories and article titles. Not saying it can't be done but I would predict much pushback given the longstanding use. Having worked in literary categories, I've found nationality is too often mistaken for the nationality of the author rather than the work's publication origin. This is not surprising because nationality is being used to represent precisely that: origin. Why? I am not sure. I successfully campaigned to remove the 'Country' parameter from Template:Infobox book last year for this very reason. And to be honest, in the case of Commons, there tends to be less oversight. I have often seen power users quietly forcing their preferred styles with no consensus. For example, all of the Writers in categories on Commons were moved a few years back to the -language writers format by user Iketsi "to match other categories". So I'm not sure citing Commons will help much unfortunately.
I know this sounds like it conflicts with what I spoke with you about above. But I would probably change my vote in the other move discussion if we had adopted the Commons style. Because due to our use of nationality, the current format of Category:Italian writers in French is combining nationality and language without further text that disambiguates either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Οἶδα (talk) 04:24, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
Οἶδα, correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't object to the proposed rename here, do you? I've re-read the discussion multiple times and I'm still not entirely sure. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:01, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
Apologies for my convolutedness. Yes, I Support the proposed rename here. I was commenting on the broader structural implications of this change and how it ties into the other discussion on Category:Algerian writers in French. I was saying that in the other discussion I supported Option B (French-language Algerian writers) because our current system's use of combining nationality adjectives with phrases like writers in French lacks grammatical completeness. Without modifying past participles (writers who write in French), Option C's construction feels vague and relies on the reader to mentally supply missing words. This makes category names like Writers in Italian feel more like informal or incomplete phrases rather than clear, unambiguous category names. I preferred the “-language” construction for clearly expressing the relationship between language and nationality without using clunky, full descriptive clauses writers such as Algerian writers who write in French
I was connecting that to what I am saying here because "nationality" is often interpreted as author nationality rather than country of origin. And that if we were to use a consistent “Literature of [Country]” framework across categories and articles then I might lean differently in that discussion too because we should not be combining nationality and language without further text that disambiguates either. The “-language” format becomes more necessary because of the adjective-based structure we currently have.
This renaming would suggest other categories separate geographic origin from language, allowing for subcategories like Writers (who write) in French from Algeria instead of French-language Algerian writers. Or not, but instead French-language writers from Algeria, I suppose. The latter sounds more natural. But I am not awfully certain, which is why I have confused you. Sorry again.
