    The article, Riggs Field, says it was the home field of the American football team from 1915 to 1941. Eventually it should go into Category:Defunct college football venues in South Carolina.--User:Namiba 16:38, 25 August 2025 (UTC)

  • Merge I think many other team football venues categories also only have two venues as well. I contend that this category is too precise and overkill. Most articles are already in a century nationality–category writer, e.g. Category:21st-century Afghan women writers, Category:19th-century Albanian poets et cetera. The merge targets Category:African writers in French, Category:Asian writers in French, and Category:European writers in French are dependant of the discussion below and if the categories are kept, renaming naturally would follow the outcome of that discussion. Nominator's rationale: Various formats of intersecting writing language and nationality. Category:Algerian French-language writers and Category:French-language Algerian writers are the two most direct possible intersections of Category:French-language writers and Category:Algerian writers. Current naming varies, option A, Category:Algerian French-language writers, is currently in more use with about 30 categories out of about 200 categories in total in this tree. Option B, Category:French-language Algerian writers, is following Category:Films by language and country categories in having the language first, e.g. Category:English-language French films.
Personally, I prefer option B, Category:French-language Algerian writers, to follow Category:Films by language and country categories.

  • The specific case of "Canadian French-language writers" was considered to be ambiguous at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2017 October 21#Category:Canadian writers in French (writers in the Canadian French dialect, or writers in French who happen to be Canadian). That also applies to several other cases, e.g. "Pakistani English-language writers" would not be intended to refer to Pakistani English varieties, and there are many similarly-named Dialects of English. I think that means we have to choose between Option B, or keep/Option C like Category:Algerian writers in French. – Fayenatic London 13:32, 17 August 2025 (UTC)

  • Keep/Option C per Fayenatic london. Fayenatic explains very well how arbitrarily putting multiple adjectives for language, country, nationality and/or ethnicity at the beginning of the catname leads to all sorts of confusion and ambiguities. This is an important reason why both many older and recent CFD precedents found that the clearest and most unambiguous formula for categories by language is Something in Fooian, e.g. Category:Songs by language and Category:Texts by language (e.g. Category:Texts in Latin). Recently, the community also agreed to Category:Books in Serbo-Croatian. Commons already consistently names the whole c:Category:Books by language tree as Books in Fooian, and c:Category:Encyclopedias by language as Encyclopedias in Fooian. Etc. The only counter-argument I've heard from some users is that Writers in Fooian doesn't sound very 'natural'. While WP:NATURALNESS may sometimes be a relevant factor, it needs to be weighed against other factors such as precision, recognizability etc., which I think outweigh the naturalness argument. Consistency can be used as an argument either way, as many categories already follow one formula or the other, and sheer numbers of catnames are a weak supporting argument for that.     I found your rationale convincing. However, the issue that came to mind is that you are mainly focusing on the precision issues of Option A then advancing Option C. I do not support Option A for the reasons Fayenatic london outlined above, though I do not believe Option B is being fully considered. You partially allude to it at the end of your post. What immediately comes to my mind is the WP:NATURALNESS issue you alluded to earlier. Writers in French indeed does not sound natural to me and for the same reasons Songs in French and Books in French do not. They read more like informal/incomplete phrases from literary prose rather part of an unambiguous categorization system. Usually the more natural and recognizable usages are Books written in French and Songs sung/recorded/etc in Spanish. But without those modifiying past participles you're left with an adjectival prepositional phrase that sounds unnatural and abstracts the relationship between the subject and its attributes. It reads as more ambiguous than the similar Category:Chinese expatriates in Finland, for example. In standard English usage, the more natural forms I find without those modifiers are compound noun phrases such as Category:French-language books and Category:Spanish-language albums (Option B). Categories should ideally be self-explanatory without the need to interpret grammar.
    I tried searching for the past discussions but they appeared to have limited participation, mostly from the same folks, and lacked strong consensus. Especially when considering how many categories would be affected and the sheer number of articles categorized into these categories. These discussions did not fully consider whether "-language" was the more precise, recognizable and natural category name. They were more focused on rooting out inconsistency per WP:C2C. I am not entirely convinced Option C is more precise, recognizable and natural than the "-language" format of Option B. It wins on concision, sure. But for these categories, I find Option B makes the intersection of writing language and nationality more intelligible by presenting both in a grammatically complete phrase that more is more immediately recognized and less reliant on contextual inference. I'm curious as to what greater issues arise from Option B because none immedately come to mind. Also, I often work with categories on Commons, and it's kind of a Wild West over there.     @Οἶδα Thank you for that elaborate reply! It's interesting that Songs in French and Books in French do not sound natural to you, even though they completely do sound natural to me. Certainly much more natural than French-language books. In my mind, I always (subconsciously) add Books written in French, or Books that are written in French, or These are books that are written in French. I can leave out almost all of those words and shorten it to Books in French, and it still sounds equally natural to me. Moreover, Writers in French is just a logical extension of the same designation for me. My brain just goes: Writers who write in French. To me, it sounds only slightly less natural than Books in French, but it makes just as much sense, and I can easily add those words back in my mind.
    The mere fact that you and I disagree about whether Books in French sounds 'natural' or not, demonstrates that WP:NATURALNESS is a subjective argument. It may come down to a sheer number of people agreeing that something does or does not sound 'natural'. But given that there are other factors at play, I think the naturalness argument shouldn't be given too much weight by itself. Precision, concision, and recognizability are all at play here as well.
    Of course, we could always agree that we find it the correct formula, but need to add more words to the catname if a substantial amount of people don't find the shortered catname 'natural' enough. Then we could go for catnames that are almost a full sentence, like Category:Countries and territories where English is an official language. Clunky, but precise and clear enough to put an end to years of confusion, arbitrariness and disagreement (which is why I pushed for its universal adoption, and convinced the Enwiki community). If we need to go for something like Writers who write in French because a substantial number of people's brains just so happen not to add the words who write when they see Writers in French, that's fine with me.     Thank you for the thoughtful reply, NLeeuw! I agree that naturalness is ultimately subjective and admit there really is no perfect option here. This is why, although I have supported Option B at length, I ultimately do not feel SO strongly about the direction we take as long as it is intelligible. Especially given how many categories this may eventually affect. I too only wish to make Wiki categories more understandable and to reach a solid conclusion to the confusion, arbitrariness and disagreement. However, that is why I think grammatical completeness and clarity should be weighed. With Option B, these long, sentence-like category names à la Algerian writers who write in French are not needed to solve the ambiguity. It already resolves the problem in a compact, complete, and precise construction that doesn't really depend on reader inference, whilst avoiding the clunkiness of full descriptive clauses. The "-language" construction also appears to scale cleanly and consistently across category types. With Option C, we would end up with American musical groups in Italian/Musical groups in Italian from the United States (instead of Category:Italian-language musical groups from the United States), French singers in Italian/Singers in Italian from France (instead of Category:Italian-language singers of France), Newspapers published in Morocco in French/Newspapers in French published in Morocco (instead of Category:French-language newspapers published in Morocco), Mass media in the United States in Danish (instead of Category:Danish-language mass media in the United States), Masculine surnames in Irish (instead of {{cl|Irish-language masculine surnames), Education in Irish (instead of Category:Irish-language education), and so on. Most of these would be more vague in Option C and/or clunkier in longer form. The alternative is readable, consistent, and unambiguous without needing to spell everything out in near-sentences.
    And again, Option C still feels vaguely incomplete to me. "Writers in French"... in French what? It reads as less enyclopedic and more prose-like. As in, "Césaire's wrenching chant of self-affirmation announced a new era of intellectual and cultural sovereignty for black writers in French." Or, "The inadequacy of his own linguistic equipment condemned him to reading the works of many writers in German translation." Or even in a Profiles in Courage or Blue in Green kind of way. From a grammatical standpoint, I'm still convinced the compound modifier clearly modifies the noun writer, making it syntactically tighter and semantically more precise. Regarding option B and option C, I would say Οἶδα and PARAKANYAA show some of the merits of option B over option C, regarding the naming convention naturalness (pointed out by the two editors) primarily in contrast to the alternative "in French" with its problems. It is also the most efficient combination of each two parent categories and it is the structure in Category:English-language French films and similar. Option C will always be six characters shorter. But even if it had existed at the time that Raja's Indonesian ancestors moved to the United States, we categorize people based on properly sourced descent from ethnic groups, not on unsourced assertions of geographic cities or regions where the ancestors might have physically lived. How is it possible to study Karl Marx without also studying Marxism. I don't see how you can separate one from the other. In other words, some Scholars of Marxism no doubt put greater emphasis on Karl Marx himself, while others place greater emphasis on Marxism. It's perfectly normal for different scholars of any subject to put greater emphasis on different aspects of that subject.     "Obviously Marxists study Marx" - not so. Many do, but others prefer to develop their way of thinking from specific derivatives by subsequent marxists without expending much effort studying Marx himself. Such people as Melvin Rader studied Marx.
    With a substantial amount of Marx's writings being unavailable until long after his death, with David Riazanov using the term Marxology particularly to refer to the study of Karl Marx and his writings - including the publication of various previously unpublished texts of which perhaps the Grundrisse is most significant. Just as Category:Marxian Economics is a particular area of study rightly belongs as distinct category within Category:Scholars of Marxism, so does Marxology. This is not some modern category but a term which arose from the 1920s to the 1960s. Indeed those included in the category have been referenced citations where they have been identified as such by reliable sources. I hope this clarifies the reasoning here.       The term "Marxology" does not appear so prominent so as to be a defining characteristic of these writers. And, as you mention, the current articles in the category do not significantly cover them as being "Marxologists", but rather Marxists and/or Marxist theorists. Further, I am not exactly seeing how this isn't within the scope of a "Biographers of specific people" category, which were just deleted today for reasons analagous to WP:PERFCAT: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 July 28#Biographers of specific people.
