Category:Football derbies in Sweden

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

Nominator's rationale: C2C Category:Association football rivalries but I moved the eponymous article recently as the article scope was broader than derbies only, which the category population also is. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 23:10, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

Years in the 1490s Spain

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:08, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Sparsely populated categories. Unlikely to get many new articles added due to the smaller number of people alive and documents surviving from during this time period. -- Beland (talk) 19:14, 10 March 2025 (UTC) Beland (talk) 19:14, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't it all be merged to year in Europe categories too? Marcocapelle (talk) 20:23, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • At least Category:1492 in Spain should be kept. It is an epoch-making year in Spanish history. --Error (talk) 00:19, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
If you're talking about Columbus' voyage to the Americas, that is listed on 1492 in Spain, but it's only one line, and there are only eight items. The article about that, Voyages of Christopher Columbus is in the decade category, not the year category, because it covers a series of trips from 1492 to 1504. There are only 6 articles in Category:1492 in Spain, so regardless of the importance of one event that happened that year, it doesn't look like that plus whatever else was going on has generated enough material in the encyclopedia to need a whole category. -- Beland (talk) 02:26, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
1492 has the end of Muslim rule over the Iberian peninsula after 7 centuries, the expulsion of Jews after centuries of presence in Spain, the publication of the first grammar of a Romance language (Spanish) and the arrival to the Americas. I don't think there is another single year so relevant in Spanish history. 1492 is considered the divider between Middle Ages in Spain and Modern Age in Spain, just as 1475 1453 is considered the divider in European history. I see 1492 mentioned in Annus mirabilis#1492 – Catholic Monarchs.
    -- Error (talk) 20:22, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
You've only listed four events. Given the advice at WP:OCYEAR and the fact that the articles covering some of those events span multiple years in the 1490s, that doesn't seem like a high enough number to justify an entire category separate from the handful of events that happened in the rest of the 1490s. What's wrong with putting them in Category:1490s in Spain, where one of them is already? The resulting category would have at 14 articles, if I'm counting correctly. This is only slightly higher than, say, Category:1650s in Spain, which I believe would have 13 if year categories were merged. -- Beland (talk) 02:07, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Dual merge to Europe parents as well per Marcocapelle's comment. Merge per WP:OCYEAR. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:51, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Noting that some categories will have removed parents such as Category:1492 establishments in the Spanish West Indies. Those should be nominated as well or they will become orphaned. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:52, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Done, see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 March 11#Establishments in the Spanish West Indies (years). Feel free to ping me if any others need nominating. -- Beland (talk) 02:40, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
  • @Beland: could you add the second merge target to the nomination? Otherwise the closer would need to do that in order to feed the bot. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:50, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
I'm not sure I understand what you want added to what, or how to do that? -- Beland (talk) 07:42, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Add the appropriate Europe parent to the listing above (i.e. Propose merging X to Y and Z) where Z is the Europe parent. –Aidan721 (talk) 13:11, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Oh, I see what you mean. I was confused because Category:1490s in Spain is already in Category:1490s in Europe, but you want e.g. articles in Category:1499 in Spain to be added to Category:1499 in Europe. I'll do that in the nomination, but it seems like it would be tidier if Europe also had per-decade and not per-year categories in this era. -- Beland (talk) 02:13, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment Some of these categories have already been emptied:
  • Category:1493 in the Spanish West Indies
  • Category:1495 in the Spanish West Indies
  • Category:1493 establishments in the Spanish Empire
  • Category:1495 establishments in the Spanish Empire

Category:American animation debuts by century

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:07, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: delete, redundant category layer since animation is very recent. Category:American animation debuts by decade and year are sufficient. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:11, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose Animation history starts in the 19th century and decade categories are useless without the parent century. Dimadick (talk) 15:57, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
  • There isn't a 19th-century category in here and it escapes me why decades are useless without centuries. They are just parallel trees by period. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:16, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
    @Dimadick: response? it's lio! | talk | work 07:13, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
Because the categories are missing from the category tree of Category:Works by century and can not be located. Dimadick (talk) 05:01, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

Category:Byzantine mosques

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Mosques converted from Byzantine churches. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:04, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Original research and rather misleading neologism. "Byzantine mosque" is an oxymoron; it would mean a mosque built under the Byzantine Empire, not a mosque built in the Byzantine style. Since all of the buildings contained here are Byzantine churches converted into mosques, the category itself is rather useless. Constantine 18:22, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
Delete per nom and redundancy. The relevant churches-turned-mosques already fall under the more transparent categories Category:Byzantine church buildings and Category:Mosques converted from churches (and relevant subcategories). The term "Byzantine mosques" is at best confusing, and not found in either the articles themselves (assuming they're competently written) or in reliable sources. I also had an earlier discussion about this with Rangasyd (the category creator) and, though I can't speak for them, I think they were receptive to that point and simply doing their best to organize things (discussion here if relevant). Nominator's rationale: Meaningless - all bots perform "maintenance tasks". * Pppery * it has begun... 17:33, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
"statistics collection" is not maintenance as Category:Statistics gathering bots. It could be renamed as I don't appreciate "task(s)" with the "(s)" Onemillionthtree (talk) 18:04, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Per MOS:JOBTITLES: Offices, titles, and positions such as...leader of the opposition...are common nouns and therefore should be in lower case when used generically. "Opposition" is a common noun in this context and should not be capitalized. Woko Sapien (talk) 17:24, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Generally support per nom. There may be exceptions where we should use capitals, but let's then discuss these exceptions. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:49, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Support: Match the article names, as shown in the prefix finder (link) and per MOS:JOBTITLES. Hey man im josh (talk) 12:57, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Support per all above. No reason for capping opposition when it's not part of a proper name, which I think it's not in any of these. Dicklyon (talk) 04:56, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Support—If nothing else, the plurality makes it a common noun. Matches WP's approach to other high-office names. Tony (talk) 10:27, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Support per pretty much all of the above. Even if this were a proper-name phrase in a particular singular instance (which this seems not to be, at least not in most cases), the pluralization makes it a common-noun phrase by definition, and so does its use as a descriptor rather than an attachment directly to someone's name (e.g. it's "President Kennedy", but "when Kennedy was the president", and "the US had 18 presidents during the 20th century").  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  00:39, 18 March 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: manual merge to Category:Extrajudicial killings by the Nazi regime. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:10, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: We don't have an article for "nazi terrorism" and the category does not attempt to give a definition on why that is a specifically defining concept vs right wing terror broadly (or any of the like 8 other heavily overlapping categories in this group, but this one is especially questionable), most of the articles in this category do not contain the word terrorism so should not even be in this category per MOS:TERRORIST. This just seems like an intermediary category that is not defining, and too specific for the amount of articles in it, we have categories for right-wing or white nationalist terrorism. PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:01, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
Generally the whole Category:Right-wing terrorism and its subcategories is a mess of 90% overlapping categories with no consistency on what category is nested into which. But this one is worse. PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:16, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: We do not have a "terrorist organizations" category - there is no parent category, so this subcategory is problematic. We do not have an Islamist organizations terrorist category - for the reason that consensus has been against having these due to definitional and MOS:TERRORIST problems. The result of the discussion was: No Consensus - No prejudice against a follow-up nom at editorial discretion. - jc37 21:11, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: There is no clear distinction between "form" and "method" here. I really don't know what is supposed to go here. Alternatively could be upmerged to the main terrorism category. PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:22, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 02:53, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: The name of the main article for this category is now simply "Jewish terrorism". Also all other entries in the religious terrorism parent cat, like Christian and Buddhist, do not bother with extremist. Terrorism is extremist inherently. PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:12, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Rename per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:06, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
Support rename for obvious reasons, shorter name is better AHI-3000 (talk) 19:31, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:5-Methoxytryptamines. Beland (talk) 17:07, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: "Mexamine" is an obscure old Russian name for 5-methoxytryptamine that isn't widely used. "5-Methoxytryptamine" is much more readily known and easily interpretable. Accordingly, "5-methoxytryptamine" has more than 20 times as many hits in Google Scholar as "mexamine". AlyInWikiWonderland (talk, contribs) 00:03, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
Rename per parent compound article 5-Methoxytryptamine. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:51, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

  • Rename as suggested. A search of the chemical literature shows that the term "methoxytryptamine" is significantly more commonly used than "mexamine". Marbletan (talk) 15:47, 17 March 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: mass merge. Beland (talk) 17:09, 27 March 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: merge, trivial intersection between place of birth and later occupation. New York City is the only place we have done this for economists. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:17, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Brooklyn was an independent city from NYC for much of its history. Pre-20th century economists would not be from NYC.4meter4 (talk) 07:21, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment If you drill down deep enough category wise, Economists would go in Scientists from New York City or Brooklyn because they are social scientists. Secondly, the category is well populated. Because these professionals have rarely been categorized at the town level, there is Economists from Shanghai, does that mean it shouldn't be done if there are enough to categorize that way?Lost in Quebec (talk) 11:57, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Fair point about social scientists. Although it is an equally trivial intersection between place of birth and later occupation, these categories are not nominated now. I changed the merge targets. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:55, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Eintracht Frankfurt (women) players. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 06:57, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Same club, with a merger and rebrand. No need for two categories. My suggestion is for players of Eintracht (the current entity) to be moved to the older, larger 1. FFC category which would then be renamed, but the other way round would work too. Crowsus (talk) 10:49, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: I will tag Category:1. FFC Frankfurt players to allow for a reverse merge.

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 02:50, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. There isn't an equivalent category for this for other countries or even in Canada. I also think being a candidate isn't as defining as being the Leader. Omnis Scientia (talk) 00:06, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:11, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. Having been a candidate for a position the person didn't win is not defining, and categories for political party leadership candidates do not routinely exist. Bearcat (talk) 17:55, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Listify which can describe how/when they were a candidate -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 23:16, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
