  • Comment: As pointed out during the 2022 discussion, the corresponding subcats of Category:Washington (state) law and Category:Georgia (U.S. state) law currently have the same "issue" (Georgia may be a bit different since the country may also have something like state court, I don't know, but at least the Washington cats should probably be part of this nomination).     • Washington can be confused with Washington, D.C., which has its own courts, judges, and legal precedents; New York has much less of a concern in that regard, because any courts of New York City exist by dint of state law, and are therefore legally courts of the state of New York. @BD2412: Fair enough, although Washington, D.C. obv doesn't have state courts, etc., and I would say that at least the rationale that the word state in non-parenthesis can be distinguished from the city also applies here, but I get your point (I don't think this nuance had been brought up before).   • Background/Neutral/Alternative Rename The current name is obviously awkward but automatically using New York (state), Georgia (country), etc. is meant to avoid having to debate category names per WP:SLOTH. The fact that this has come up 3 times at CFD undercuts that logic though, so I won't oppose this time around. Removing the 2nd non-parenthetical "state" still seems like a more elegant solution though since it solves the redundancy issue while following WP:C2D. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:23, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
    • @RevelationDirect: If we leave the parenthetical but remove the non-parenthetical, we run into a different problem of potentially confusing New York state courts with New York federal courts (i.e., the federal courts of the State of New York). BD2412 T 22:52, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

IMHO it's sufficiently clear that the category is for state courts of and in the state, not federal courts in the state, nor for that matter state courts only in the city of NY. As for C2D, that is only a presumption to be followed in non-controversial Speedy cases, and is subject to override at full CFDs; it is not a principle to be followed in full CFD discussions. As for following the main article, where the specific meaning is clear (even if differently punctuated), there is no need to follow the disambiguator as written in the main article name. – Fayenatic London 13:53, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

That being the rule, most remaining entries in many siblings e.g. Burials in Mexico need to be purged, along with deletion of Burials in Michoacán (1 P), Burials in Nuevo León (1 P) and Burials in Veracruz (3 P). I've been through them and set up sub-cats where I could find at least 2 burials in a location. Is burial in a cathedral defining, even if only 1 notable person there has an article, which is currently the case for 11 cathedrals in Burials by cathedral? In which case, create another 1-person category for Rafael Guízar y Valencia.
Does somebody want to designate every "Burials in [country]" & "Burials in [populated place]" category as a container category, & nominate all those with no cemetery/church/mausoleum subcats for deletion?
Looking into history, in 2015 many categories were renamed using "by place" e.g. "burials in Paris" to Burials in Paris by place, see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2015_January_17#Category:Burials_by_city. See also the inconclusive follow-up at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Biography/Archive_50#Categorising_by_place_of_burial. It would be helpful to revive that somewhere. Nominator's rationale: University alumni category newly created for just one person. As always, universities do not automatically get their own dedicated alumni categories the moment one alumnus of that university has an article to file in it -- this would be fine if there were at least five people to file here, but is not needed for just one, and the university's "what links here" doesn't offer up four other alumni who could be filed here to salvage it. The other categories batched here, further, were all also newly created just to parent this, and will also be left empty if this goes.
