Nominator's rationale: I cannot find any other usage for referring to islands of French Polynesia as regions. But there is no reason to change to by island, the only content is the two football club categories and one article on a league that would fit directly in Category:Mo'orea. Nominator's rationale: Very few disasters: 125 out of 168 nominated categories have one disaster per year, only 14 have three disasters (the most) per year. In-between years with categories there are many gaps. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 16:38, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:59, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • I must have made an error when counting the articles, Category:2022 disasters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has six entries. The rest are 125 with one, 28 with two and 14 with three. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 17:29, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Merge per nom. Yes, underpopulated. OTOH what a huge mountain of work will be this 3-fold merging. -- Just N. (talk) 17:37, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Merge but change the last target from century to decades, at least for DRC, where Category:2000s disasters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its successors will have 4, 8 and 12 articles respectively, and Morocco with 6, 6 and 5. I accept that some others are less useful, e.g. Mali disasters seem to be only crimes and Covid. All mergers should be without prejudice against splitting by decade where the numbers make this useful. – Fayenatic London 21:26, 22 November 2025 (UTC)
    I don't object. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 21:56, 24 November 2025 (UTC)

  • Propose Deleting Category:Rivers with fish ladders
Nominator's rationale: WP:TRIVIALCAT and WP:NONDEFINING
A Fish ladder is a series of pools going up the side of a dam or other structures that allow fish to move past the obstacle. We don't categorize rivers by dams, so it seems trivial to categorize them by an accessory structure and this seems akin to Category:Rivers with bridges. (Incidentally, I went to create a category for the fish ladders themselves, but the only article I found was Pitlochry fish ladder.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:30, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
  • If deleted, it may be useful to add a list section in article Fish ladder. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:13, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
No objection to that, but it would take some effort because most of the rivers link to dam articles that then mention having a fish ladder. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:59, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

  • To be clearer, I have no objection to creating a list of fish ladders. (I'm not volunteering to create the list though.) As for the category, I don't think it's defining but we'll see where the consensus takes us. RevelationDirect (talk) 03:18, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure). ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 13:46, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: The usage of the Grisons is supported by article use and lead (The Grisons (/ɡrˈzɒ̃/; French: [ɡʁizɔ̃]) or Graubünden ...), nGrams ("the Grisons" is even heavier before 1920), and in Wikipedia article titles. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 12:19, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Support. I don't have any specific knowledge about the place, but this seems to be correct. Mclay1 (talk) 14:29, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Does this really still count as its common name, instead of simply Graubünden? Compare with . Marcocapelle (talk) 17:55, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
I don't know if that is the exact source to define the name, however Graubünden is also used by EB and Swiss tourist board. The article Grisons has been named so or canton of Grisons since 2016 and the Grisons outscores Graubünden on nGrams. One may ask if all nGrams refer to the canton. Unless somebody opens a move request to Graubünden soon, I think we shall move the categories to follow the article use (and if successful of course follow the new name). Kaffet i halsen (talk) 19:44, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Support. Seems to be correct, see this publication from the regional government, for instance. By the way, Canton Grisons would be the formal English name , if there is one. But that is another topic. Zach (Talk) 11:31, 19 November 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary layers for single-category subcategories. Upmerge for now. Films by decade categories can go directly into Cinema of X categories. Mclay1 (talk) 10:19, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
These categories are simply unnecessary wrappers for their respective countries' films by decade trees, which are already sufficiently categorised within their countries' Decades and Cinema trees. Mclay1 (talk) 13:11, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
Oppose. You did not explan why this layer is unnecessary. It seems like a perfectly reasonably layer to me, a sub to Category:Decades. People talk of decades in fields of culture. For example, here's an entire book on American cinema of the 1990s: Themes and variations. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:34, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:2000s in Bangladeshi cinema has one subcategory, Category:2000s Bangladeshi films, and is a redundant layer. There are plenty of such categories to come to Category:Bangladeshi films by decade from Category:Cinema of Bangladesh. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 10:52, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
We really need to reach a community consensus already on these film/cinema date categorizations. These "by country and decade" film categories only began in 2022 when it was boldly done following rather brief discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Film/Archive_80#One_of_the_best_films_in_[year]_or_[decade], overturning previous consensus at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_January_3#American_films_by_year_and_by_decade. I wanted to start a WPFILM discussion for "by country and year" categories following our recent discussion Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_September_28#Category:Films_by_country_by_year, but I didn't know how to broach it. Is this appropriate:

RfC: Should film articles adopt a Category:Films by country and year structure? How would it be implemented and maintained, and would the parent Films by year categories be diffusing or non-diffusing?

Do I create a second, separate RfC for this decade categorization? No one else took the initiative and I really didn't want to start something only to be chastised for doing it the wrong way. Still, repeated discussions here at CfD feel like a waste of time that continuously sidesteps the issue. Οἶδα (talk) 22:43, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
I have limited knowledge of RfC but to my understanding, there should be no RfC for a topic or issue that may be handled by XfD. So the categories in Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 September 28#Category:Films by country by year may be nominated here again. This is also mentioned by the closer. At the point I added them to the discussion it looked the discussion could have handled both things but then the rest of comments only adressed the original discussion. For the decades, I think the correct link is Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film/Archive 80#Films by country (second discussion). Kaffet i halsen (talk) 09:55, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for this information. Yes, that last link was the one I meant to link to. My real concern would be the less likelihood of a CfD to pull in significant community participation. Dropping a notice on a talk page has not had great results in my experience. And if these categories came about via WT:FILM, it would follow that consensus should be built there. But if CfD is the only appropriate avenue for this procedure then I shall heed your advice. Οἶδα (talk) 07:33, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
@Piotrus: I did explain, and if you look in the categories, you'll see what I mean. They don't contain any articles; they're just duplicating the structure of the countries' categories in Category:Films by country and decade. For example, Category:Soviet cinema by decade contains Category:Soviet films by decade and then a bunch of decades categories which themselves only contain the decades of Category:Soviet films by decade. I'm not proposing to delete the contents of the categories or remove them from the tree for Decades (the Films by decade categories will remain). Mclay1 (talk) 14:34, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
I don't see the problem. They are being populated, if perhaps slowly, and there is value in being able to group works by decades, as decades are culturally significant. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:04, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
@Piotrus: They're not being populated; they only contain the films subcategories, with no added benefit. The proposal isn't to delete the decade categories that actually contain something (e.g. Category:2010s Bangladeshi films), just the ones that contain those and nothing else (e.g. Category:2010s in Bangladeshi cinema); there's no reason for them to exist. We don't need to nest single categories like Russian dolls. The categories can just be moved up with no loss of content and simpler navigation. Mclay1 (talk) 12:44, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
@Mclay1 They will be populated, because they make logical sense to exist. Ex. I started populating Category:Polish cinema by decade, but as some said, it's really something that should be botted. Instead of destroying the contnet here that should be recreated one day, and will be, productive use of time would be to, well, populate stuff. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:23, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
PS. It's also ridcolous that only some categories were proposed. Why delete Category:Polish cinema by decade but not Category:British cinema by decade? Because we didn't have a volunteer to finish populating that tree? WP:SYSBIAS. Build, don't destroy. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:25, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
It's not ridiculous because the British tree actually has articles in it. Not every country currently has a cinema by decade tree and nor do all countries need one. You claim to have populated the Polish category but it doesn't contain anything except Films categories, which as I keep saying, don't need another layer above them. Mclay1 (talk) 07:36, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
There is no reason Polish or Bangladeshi or other trees cannot look like British. They'll be populated fully once someone cares to do it. Don't destroy the infrastructure or the early work that some have begun for that. Wikipedia:There is no deadline Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:04, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
If you care to do it, then do it. We don't need to keep essentially empty categories just in case some populates them in future. They should have been populated when they were created. If they're deleted and then needed in future, it's easy to recreate them. Mclay1 (talk) 06:17, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: I don't think it helps navigation in any way to have on one side articles and on the other side categories in this case. Hidden categories named after categories are only ever useful when the content of eponymous categories would not fit in the parent category, as is often the case for people. However it is not the case here: content is still about association football. The relevant guideline is WP:EPONCAT. Place Clichy (talk) 10:01, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: rename/merge. (non-admin closure) GoldRomean (talk) 16:49, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: These two categories don't feel sufficiently differently. It would be clearer to combine them under the broader term "war". Works about specific wars are already categorised in the subcategory Category:Works by war. Mclay1 (talk) 06:44, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
"Feel" is subjective. While I acknowledge that warfare redirects to war and therefore this may make sense, we should restart this discussion by suggeting a merge from the top, wotjh Category:Warfare, not one of its subcats. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:36, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
@Piotrus: I'm not really sure what you mean. If these categories are merged and renamed, the new category can be reparented to Category:War. Mclay1 (talk) 00:23, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
Mhm. Weak support for merging them due to warfare redirecting to war. I just "felt" the nomination rationale could be stronger, for example by mentioning the redirect's existence. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:22, 27 November 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: No scheme exists for musical groups by decade and one that was started was deleted in a CfD from 21 June 2011. Groups are categorized by year of establishment/disestablishment but not by the time period when they were active. Upmerging isn't necessary as all content is already in a genre subcat of Category:Thai musical groups. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 06:31, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: Purge * Pppery * it has begun... 02:12, 29 November 2025 (UTC)

I feel that the categories (and their subcategories), as of now, are too much of a mixed bag to be useful. Here we have actual serial killers and bandits (Lee Boyd Malvo, Ado Aleru), alongside with politicians, rulers, and warlords (Henri Christophe, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Alexander Kolchak) - that is, despite the main category's disclaimer that the category is not to be used for those who carried out massacres in service of a state. I would suggest purging the category and moving the warlords and political leaders who have been found guilty of war crimes to other appropriate categories, such as, for example, Category:War criminals or Category:Genocide perpetrators. --HPfan4 (talk) 02:33, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

  • Purge, that feels like a no-brainer. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:59, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Keep, though remove anyone who did not actually commit the act themself. That is not what this category is for. It's supposed to be for people described in RS as mass murderers (or equivalent terms), which is not the same thing as serial killers. People who kill a bunch of people in one go/a short period, which are multiple murderers but not serial murderers. E.g. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are not serial killers, but they are mass murderers. What category would you put them in? The field of criminology distinguishes them. The problem with this category is that people have been adding it to any person who ordered any sort of war crime, which is like tagging a soldier with serial killer, which has also been done. Such people are not referred to as "mass murderers" in RS. That doesn't mean we delete the serial killer categories. PARAKANYAA (talk) 01:09, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
I think this is basically equivalent to a purge vote, if I am understanding what that entails correctly. PARAKANYAA (talk) 19:05, 21 November 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: "Fantasy brick and mortar retail store" is not a retail format as far as I can tell. It's not really clear what "fantasy retail" means here, and I don't think any of the stores in the category are known as "fantasy retail" stores. ArtemisiaGentileschiFan (talk) 00:55, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Delete. Random name - what is fantasy brick? Or any other part of this except retail store? What's the parent concept here? This is some ORish or niche concept that neesd to be explained first. The creator is still active, maybe they'll do so here - ping me, I am curious. But so far this looks like some half-baked idea. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:39, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
I think that it is referring to Brick and mortar retail, but I agree that the inclusion criterion is subjective and nondefining to the point of accessing membership requiring original research. Care to differ or discuss with me? The Nth User 18:49, 25 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete Seems random and incomprehensible. I'd assume it was stores depicted in a fantasy work. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 06:05, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete, I guessed it was retail, exclusively existing as brick-and-mortar store, and focusing on fantasy as a genre. But that is also not the case. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:05, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Googling gave me an AI explanation that they are retail stores with fantasy-theme decorations, but it's an AI concept, I didn't notice any other RS. Since the creator didn't bother to explain it, guessing is pointless. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:40, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
