The result of the discussion was: procedural close. Discussion about renaming should continue at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 August 25#Category:Deputy chairmen of the Rajya Sabha. (non-admin closure) GoldRomean (talk) 00:19, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: This category should be renamed to the suggested target category as the article was also renamed previously TheSlumPanda (talk) 05:56, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
  • @TheSlumPanda: please provide reliable sources for this rename. Otherwise the article should be moved back. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:46, 26 August 2025 (UTC)

Category:Graphs to Port

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Pages with graphs to be ported by GraphBot. It looks like a bot needs to be changed, so I won't implement immediately. Feel free to ping me if you need any admin help when the time comes. -- Beland (talk) 02:11, 27 September 2025 (UTC) Beland (talk) 02:11, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Propose renaming Category:Graphs to Port to Category:Pages with graphs using the Graph extension that need to be ported to the Chart extension
Nominator's rationale: A bit wordy, and open to alternatives. But current title can mean a lot of things and is not limited to graphs of the Graph extension, which this seems to be. Regardless, "Port" should not be in uppercase; and this category is not for the graphs themselves (i.e., these are not templates), but pages that contain graphs. Gonnym (talk) 09:48, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
Whatever is decided for this, should also be applied to Category:Graphs to be ported needing names. Gonnym (talk) 09:51, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
  • I do not like the word 'extension' being used twise. Maybe "Pages with graphs migrating between extensions from Graph to Chart" ? Snævar (talk) 19:15, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
I like my suggestion and pppery's. I find the other ones too long and long winded.--Snævar (talk) 15:46, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
  • I guess "Pages with" can be omitted. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:27, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Agreed that the current name is a mess, but that proposal doesn't help; everything in Category:Pages using the Graph extension needs to be ported to the Chart extension eventually. This category is for a specific subset of pages that can be ported by a bot, and should be renamed to something like Category:Pages with graphs to be ported by GraphBot. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:01, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
  • The suggested rename is pretty verbose; I support some of the alternative names however. GalStar (talk) (contribs) 04:38, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Given that this is a temporary category used by a bot to do a one time run converting graphs to charts I don't think it's really necessary to rename it. I would just let the bot finish converting uses of the graph extension, then this can be deleted anyway. 86.23.87.130 (talk) 15:14, 30 August 2025 (UTC)

Upmerging some undersized stub categories

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Keep the aircraft ones; no consensus on the rest. In theory there might be a consensus to merge Category:1930s Hindi-language film stubs here since nobody opposed it, but I'm not convinced that consensus is real rather than a result of it flying under the radar, so I'm not willing to call that. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:20, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: There are too few articles (less than 60) in the categories I'd like to upmerge. I'd also like to propose:
* 1940s comedy-drama film stubs to be upmerged into 3 categories: Comedy-drama film stubs, 1940s drama film stubs, and 1940s comedy film stubs
A category for all aircraft stub articles (the intention of this proposal) already exists, adding another would be duplication resulting in another nomination. There are also templates involved such as Template:Aero-1950s-stub which displays a highlighting stub message in the article footer and adds the article to the relevant category. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 08:33, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Merge or keep aircraft stub cats? And thoughts on the other categories up for discussion as well would be appreciated.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, GoldRomean (talk) 23:49, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Support Most/Defer on Aircraft I'm not totally clear on the advantage of having every decade for aircraft, but I'll defer on that. The rest all seem reasonable given the stub counts. - RevelationDirect (talk) 19:52, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep Paralympics stub categories. It doesn't make sense to keep some of them sorted by year and not the rest. SomeoneDreaming (talk) 20:22, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

Literature of Fooland

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: No consensus to rename these three in isolation, without prejudice against a broader discussion for the whole tree. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:19, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: WP:C2D: Literature of Moldova. Compare c:Category:Literature of Moldova.
WP:C2D: Literature of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Compare c:Category:Literature of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
WP:C2D: Literature of Luxembourg. Compare c:Category:Literature of Luxembourg.

Additional rationale: This situation came up earlier at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 August 17#Category:Non-fiction literature by nationality. As many other recent precedents have shown, categorisation on English Wikipedia is increasingly moving away from catnames like Fooian things towards catnames like Things of Fooland. The reason for this is simple and obvious: the adjective Fooian is extremely often ambiguous and confusing. It can usually simultaneously refer to a country, a nationality, a language, an ethnicity, a culture, a geographic region not coinciding with the country, sometimes a religion or tradition, and so on. For this reason, articles and category trees such as Category:Culture by country have all been renamed to Culture of Fooland (some decades ago, some recently due to my initiative). I think the same should be done for literature article titles and category names. Many of them are already in line with the Things of Fooland formula, including some catnames (examples I found previously):
As I suggested in the previous CfR, we could speedy-rename all the main categories of the main articles above simply per WP:C2D. But this has been opposed with the argument this should go to a full discussion. Well, so be it. Here we are. I think all these articles and categories should all be named Literature of Fooland, like Literature of England and Category:Literature of England already is. This makes clear that we're not talking about "English literature", in which "English" can obviously mean 7+ different things simultaneously. Not all "English" literature is published in England, not all literature from England is in the English language, not everyone writing literature in English has "English/UK nationality" or "ethnicity" or "culture" etc. etc. etc. Wherever this distinction can be reasonably made, it should be made. I just suggest we start with the easy bits, namely the categories whose main articles are already following the Literature of Fooland formula. I picked Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Luxembourg for starters, that's all. Good day, NLeeuw (talk) 23:48, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Rename per nom, in order to avoid ambiguity. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:20, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose renaming just those three for the same reason I did at speedy – the consistency of the categories in Category:Literature by country per C2C is more important in this case than a few of the categories matching the format of their related articles, since there is no particular reason those categories should be different from the others. However, I would support renaming the whole tree at once, for the clarity reasons stated by nom. Mclay1 (talk) 23:29, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
Although I strongly agree in theory, I think that would result in a WP:TRAINWRECK in practice. We should be careful and take this step by step. That's why I'm starting with these, but others will follow if we reach agreement. NLeeuw (talk) 15:42, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
PS: I've WP:BOLDly renamed Flemish literature to Literature of Flanders, and rewritten it slightly to be geography-based rather than language-and-geography-based. It is closely linked to Dutch-language literature, 19th-century Dutch literature, Middle Dutch literature, and Belgian literature, but exactly how these articles are supposed to relate to each other is still unclear.
The situation is similar to Literature of Moldova and Romanian literature; the latter tries to be both language-based and geography-based, which leads to some odd generalisations. The great advantage of Literature of Moldova over Moldovan literature is sidestepping the whole debate about the so-called "Moldovan language", which essentially everyone who matters now regards as just another name of the Romanian language. A similar (endless) debate exists about "Flemish" as a dialect, a group of dialects, a separate language, or just another name of the Dutch language (again, the latter view represents the consensus). By saying "Flanders", however, we sidestep the whole problem and include authors who wrote in Latin or Old French as well. NLeeuw (talk) 23:39, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Rename per nom and per the previous discussion. The current scheme is too ambiguous, the alternative is not. Of course there will always be overlap between the topics of literature by language and country, but all of these categories are subcats of Category:Literature by country, and should unambiguously reflect that. Οἶδα (talk) 04:07, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment - I will just briefly comment for now. Nomination is sound, but only if all the categories under parent Category:Literature by country get a mass-moved. To move just a fraction of them would make these stand-out rather obviously.--౪ Santa ౪99° 17:33, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
    • Very weak rename with my earlier comment (I would appreciate (but I am not requesting) a line or two of further explanation by nominator or anyone else how to resolve rest of the tree Category:Literature by country)--౪ Santa ౪99° 16:17, 17 September 2025 (UTC)

  • Keep All - This are among 61 subcats in Category:Mausoleums by country. Our standard practice over the years has always been to exempt small subcats like these from automatic merging or deletion.
As a matter of fact, this practice was alluded to in the long-standing former guideline WP:SMALLCAT, which said "unless such categories are part of a large overall accepted sub-categorization scheme." And it's also referred to directly in the Essay at WP:MFN (which is a work-in-progress for a guideline to supersede WP:SMALLCAT), as follows:
6. The "large overall accepted sub-categorization scheme"
The "large established tree" clause exists so that categorizing editors can add articles to categories without checking beforehand whether that category exists or should exist. Because it is part of an established tree they may rely on the fact that it exists or should exist.
All of which supports what I said about it being our long-standing practice over the years to exempt such sub-cats from deletion or merging. Anomalous+0 (talk) 03:36, 4 September 2025 (UTC)

Category:Competitors in the sport of athletics

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Don't rename * Pppery * it has begun... 16:16, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: This was recently speedy moved from Category:Competitors in athletics. The category contains people competing in the sport of athletics such as hurdlers, long jumpers, and marathon runners. Both category names are constructs as people are called by their discipline(s), or athletes or track and field athletes outside and inside Wikipedia.
Describing a person engaging in or having an occupation within an activity does not necessarily need to include the full name of the activity. We don't necessarily need to say novel writers, diving competitors, or judo players when shorter descriptions are available. In this case, I would say sport and competitors are repetitive. A competitor in athletics is less clumsy and enough to make it different from someone engaging in athletics (physical culture) (an athlete (physical culture)) or college athletics (a college athlete). Kaffet i halsen (talk) 08:39, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment – How does Category:Competitors in athletics differentiate between the sport of athletics and college athletics? Mclay1 (talk) 09:01, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
I cannot come up with any possible risks of confusion as college athletics is usually a combination of college or student or something else similar and athletics. We also don't intersect college career and outside-college career. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 22:08, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
College athletics though is not always the sport of athletics. And so a college athletics competitor could be confused as "competitor in athletics". The ambiguity is why Sport of athletics is at the title it is. Mclay1 (talk) 09:13, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
My understanding is that "college athletics" is only popularly practiced in countries that use the term "track and field", not "sport of athletics". So in the context of Wikipedia, due to WP:ENGVAR I don't think we would ever use the term "athletics" in a college category unless it refers to all sports. --Habst (talk) 12:58, 10 September 2025 (UTC)
I assume there won't be any categories for non-sport-of-athletics named something that could be confused for the sport of athletics, but someone could confuse Category:Competitors in athletics for being for something other than just the sport of athletics. (That's a confusing sentence. I hope that makes sense to people.) Mclay1 (talk) 12:28, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

  • Oppose/Wrong Venue I'm not at all sure that Sport of athletics is the right main article name since the full phrase seems to be used more on Wikipedia than off. But a better forum to resolve that to follow the spirt of WP:C2D would be at a requested move on the article talk page but it looks like there's been a couple unsuccessful RMs there in the last few years. (If the broader nomination for Athletics categories makes this one of the few holdouts though, I would be open to making this match the other categories.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 20:11, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose The original was probably a little ambiguous, so usage of the full term is useful for avoidance of categorization errors in this instance. Note if you search for "competitor in athletics" then you'll find this term used for other sports (e.g. . SFB 16:37, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose – I'm not a fan of the "sport of athletics" situation, but I don't think removing the disambiguator is the solution. Until a better system is found, we should be consistent. Mclay1 (talk) 12:25, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: Don't rename * Pppery * it has begun... 16:15, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: The current category name only includes Asian Americans, but the Utah Legislature has a growing number of Pacific Islander Americans under this category. I propose that the category be renamed to include "and Pacific Islander" in line with other states with Asian American and Pacific Islander legislators, for example: Category:Asian American and Pacific Islander state legislators in California, Asian American and Pacific Islander state legislators in Hawaii, Asian American and Pacific Islander state legislators in Oklahoma, and Asian American and Pacific Islander state legislators in Virginia. The reason I do not propose another category is because Asian American and Pacific Islander is the general ethnic term used in the US and the category is small enough as is. Cheers! Nominator's rationale: Category newly created for just one person, at an ambiguous name and without obvious siblings.
The person filed here created and developed a writing system for a hitherto oral language -- but we already have Category:Creators of writing systems for that, and the person filed here is already in there alongside this. That category also doesn't have any geographic subcategories for individual countries or continents, so this has no natural siblings.
But even more importantly, the "script developers" wording is very highly prone to being confused with "people involved in the writing and editing and rewriting of film and television screenplays", because that process is literally called "script development". (And, in fact, that's exactly what I thought this was when I first saw it, until I clicked on the article and saw a writing system creator rather than a screenwriter.)
So this can't stay at this name due to ambiguity, but renaming it for clarity isn't necessary either as the article is already in another category for the intended meaning anyway. Bearcat (talk) 13:47, 6 September 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Improperly-named and misconceived category. There are two films here, of which one lists Nello De Rossi as a producer and one lists him as an actor in its cast, but crossing production credits with acting credits in a "person films" category is not how things are done.
Cassiopeia (the production credit) could be filed in a Category:Films produced by Nello De Rossi if anybody thinks that would be valuable — I don't think it would be justified without a lot more than just one film in it, as producing films doesn't appear to be his main notability claim (his biographical article actually appears to be written from the perspective that he's notable as a restaurateur first and foremost, and oh by the way also had a small film career on the side), but I won't fight anybody who actually feels that it's warranted and useful.
But regardless, actors never get categories to collect their acting credits. WP:PERFCAT unequivocally precludes categorizing films for individual performers in their casts, so The Little Adventurers cannot have a Nello De Rossi category at all.
And even if somebody does want to create a "films produced by" category for Cassiopeia, the eponymous Category:Nello De Rossi still won't be needed as a parent for it if the only other content in it is his biographical article itself. Bearcat (talk) 12:59, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete as per nomination. Gjs238 (talk) 17:55, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete the eponymous category obviously, per ample precedent, and the films category per WP:PERFCAT. As for Category:Films produced by Nello De Rossi, it hardly seems meaningful if he's only produced one film in his career. Pichpich (talk) 22:49, 6 September 2025 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Underpopulated categories for food and drink festivals in individual Nigerian cities. As always, it doesn't aid navigation to obsessively press everything down into the narrowest possible level of microcategorization across the board -- these would be fine if there were a lot of things to file in them, but are not needed for just one or two things each, and the target categories all have less than ten other festivals in them anyway and thus aren't in any desperate need of diffusion either. Nominator's rationale: Category for a non-defining characteristic. The Nurse with Wound list is a list of bands and musicians that were named in the album art for another band's debut album as influences -- and while that's an acceptable topic for a list (indeed, the named artists are already listed in the article I linked to), it doesn't define the listed musicians strongly enough to justify a category for them. Nominator's rationale: Inconsistent naming of the sport of athletics within the by country–tree with and this nomination seeks to make it more consistent. This nomination includes the first-level contents of Category:Sport of athletics by country, Category:Athletics (track and field) venues by country, and Category:Sport of athletics competitions by country.
To name the topic categories by country, the format Category:Athletics in Afghanistan has long been used (except Canada and the Uniteds States) even though the main article is currently sport of athletics. The main article is hard to name as athletics is both subject to disambiguation in general and the is named differently depending on English variation. Athletics (physical culture)#Etymology: In the modern English language the term athletics has taken on two distinct meanings. Its meaning in American English broadly denotes human physical sports and their respective systems of training, the sense described in this article. The other, narrower principal meaning of the word comes from British English and variants within the British Commonwealth; this meaning of athletics refers solely to the concept of the sport of athletics (a category of sporting competition that comprises track and field sports and various other forms of foot racing), rather than physical sport in general.
Outside the United States athletics means the sport of athletics primarily.
Three options:
To structure the discussion categories related to the United States and Canada (Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 June 10#Category:Athletics (track and field) in Canada are left out. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 11:43, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Prefer A, then C, then B – as the system works for Category:Association football by country. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 11:43, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Support A for countries and venues (not sold on competitions) – I think within the context of the categories, it's clear that it refers to the sport of athletics and not other general uses of the term. Option B would also be fine for consistency within the category tree. I don't think Option C makes sense – the existence of articles for those countries doesn't mean they should be treated differently. Additionally, regardless of which system we use for those other countries, Category:Athletics (track and field) in Canada and Category:Track and field in the United States should be renamed to Category:Sport of athletics in Canada and Category:Sport of athletics in the United States (and their subcategories accordingly), because according to the articles Sport of athletics and Track and field, track and field is a type of athletics and doesn't encompass the whole sport. Mclay1 (talk) 14:51, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
    • Struck my caveat. Let's just name them all the same way within countries for the sake of consistency. As nom says, do it the same way as football. I doubt we'll get much confusion from American editors. The biggest issue is athletes – any consensus established here for the above categories should not be used to speedy rename athlete categories. Mclay1 (talk) 14:31, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Support Any Consensus for Renaming: Prefer C, B, then A I'm usually a purist with deferring to the article space which would be Sport of athletics, except where local articles, WP:ENGVAR, etc. dictate otherwise. In this case though, getting rid the venue "Athletics (track and field)" format is a priority. In other words, I support C, B then A but think all of them are better than no change. - RevelationDirect (talk) 20:26, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Support with a preference for A – as noted by Kaffet, this is a similar system as used for Category:Association football by country where the top level categories use the full term, the less common English variant is applied in the relevant trees, while the international standard is applied in all other country trees. SFB 16:43, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Support. Another thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that "track and field" is technically a subset of "athletics", so the term "athletics (track and field)" implying they are the same is problematic. I prefer option C then B -- the issue with A is that I have noticed we get a lot of miscategorizations from Americans putting non-athletics sports topics in "athletics" categories if we don't explicitly say "sport of". If we choose C, we should create category redirects for the "sport of..." categories for cases like Athletics in France. --Habst (talk) 20:21, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
Agreed on redirects if we were to go with C, that's a good point. RevelationDirect (talk) 23:43, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
