Nominator's rationale: Only contents are expatriate and descent categories, plus a few ambassador categories that are also themselves at CfD. Not included are ones that will be empty if the ambassador categories are deleted. Most of the expatriate and descent subcategories are themselves deletable, but I'll let you handle them separately. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:59, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: All very small except the United States one, and most are non-resident ambassadors. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:58, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete the categories with non-resident ambassadors: merge the underpopulated categories with resident ambassadors. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:14, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge and Delete as nominated. Because so many people have served as ambassadors of one country to multiple other countries, sometimes up to 18 other countries, it is in general better to organize these nominations by country sending not country receiving. However any action that reduces the clutter of too narrow categories that hinder navigation is good.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:22, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Only contents are two descent categories and a disputed territory (Banc du Geyser), the latter of which is already in the appropriate territorial disputes categories. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:44, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep. Territorial disputes are relevant to international relations, and descent/diaspora/expatriate categories are relevant to a link between the two nations. Place Clichy (talk) 19:59, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete Categories containing only a single article are useless for navigation. The descent and expat categories don't need this redundant parent. AusLondonder (talk) 06:30, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Merge * Pppery * in solidarity 04:17, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: It is very challengeable that the peoples targeted in the articles would be called indigenous peoples. See e.g. The Holocaust in Ukraine, Soviet repressions of Polish citizens (1939–1946), 1921–1922 famine in Tatarstan, Generalplan Ost, Greek Operation, Armenian genocide etc.: if Jews, Poles, Slavs, Tatars (who are the product of the Mongol invasion), Greeks in the Soviet Union are considered indigenous peoples, then every people in Europe is indigenous. The notion of indigenous peoples is not just an ethnic minority or a distinct language, it also involves a distinct culture based on a link to specific territory and its nature, which in fact in Europe probably only applies to the Sámi. Place Clichy (talk) 19:39, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment: In the case of The Holocaust in Ukraine, I was referring to the genocide of Crimean Karaites and particularly Krymchaks, both of which are recognized as Indigenous by the Ukrainian government, but I recognize that one might be a bit tenuous and can be removed. As for 1921–1922 famine in Tatarstan, Volga Tatars are generally considered Indigenous, and they live within European Russia, along with various other groups considered such. We're not in a place to be deciding what "a link to a specific territory and it's nature" means, especially as it's one of the more vague parts of common definitions of indigeneity. I don't think appealing to the definition rather than to reliable sources that use it is very compelling for this project. As for the Greek Operation, that one can be removed as Pontic Greeks are not Indigenous to any part of what was the Soviet Union. As for Armenian genocide and Generalplan Ost, I was categorizing based on the wording used to describe Armenians in that article ("an ethnic group indigenous to the Armenian highlands") and in the Generalplan Ost article ("Nazi Germany's plan for the settlement and "Germanization" of captured territory in Eastern Europe, involving the genocide, extermination and large-scale ethnic cleansing of Slavs, Eastern European Jews, and other indigenous peoples of Eastern Europe categorized as "Untermenschen" in Nazi ideology."). If you have objections to the wording of those articles based on either the sources used in those articles for that wording, or other RS which argue that these groups, relative to Ottoman Turks and Germans respectively, do not meet the definition of an Indigenous people, I would advise taking those objections there first. Arctic Circle System (talk) 23:47, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge, most of these peoples are not commonly called indigenous peoples. Exceptions are certain indigenous peoples in Russia such as Chechens and Tatars, those articles may be manually moved to Category:Genocide of indigenous peoples. Or we might create Category:Genocide of indigenous peoples in Russia. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:29, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
I'm not certain about merging, though I would support the creation of such a category whether this proposal goes through or not, if it is broadly construed to include non-Russian parts of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union while under the control of those governments. Otherwise it'll just be a mess imo. Arctic Circle System (talk) 23:57, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
Yes, a more specific, or broader, location could be better. Naming the region is difficult. I think "Russia" would be inappropriate because on Wikipedia that tends to mean the Russian Federation, which has only existed since 1991. Eurasia could be more suitable, the only examples there are on the borders of Europe. Category:Genocide of indigenous peoples in Eurasia could contain those two and Category:Genocide of indigenous peoples in Asia as a subcategory. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 03:08, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge This is not how these people are normally referred to.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:23, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
See my previous comment on the proposal. If you have objections to how those articles are worded, then it should be taken there before moving outward. Arctic Circle System (talk) 20:13, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Merge since 1 article categories are not useful to navigation. The fact that the border is maritime is not really relevant. If we had a large number of articles, say 6 or more, that fit here, we could have the category if the border was martime. However that would also need to be if Iran-Qatar relations was large enough to diffuse, and it has only 8 direct articles so it is not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:36, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEF. The sports agent who represents a player is trivial and unrelated to their notability. User:Namiba 16:53, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep. As the creator of this category, I went through deletion review to have this category reinstated and it was approved without contention. I understand that such categories do not typically exist, but in the sphere of baseball labor relations, Boras is exceptional enough that his clients are seen as their own category, such as in piece from the Athletic that repeatedly refers to "Boras clients". William on Tires (talk) 17:05, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete as NONDEF. They are notable for their careers, not their representation. Also, players hire and fire Boras at will. Do they stay there after they fire him?  Muboshgu (talk) 18:38, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
When understanding the contracts of the players in question, knowing that they are represented by Boras is a very important distinction. There is hardly a requirement, though, for categories to somehow be essential to the subject. Virtually all of the pages in this category are also in categories for minor league teams that the player only had very brief stints with.
This category includes players who have been represented by Boras at any point. Having it only as current clients would not make sense. Barry Bonds, for instance, signed a notable deal with Boras but later fired him. In any event, no category on Wikipedia (besides the category for living people) is concerned with whether or not something is current, so I don't see what's wrong with this one. William on Tires (talk) 21:25, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per WP:NONDEF. Rotary Engine talk 20:14, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per those above for failing WP:NONDEF which requires categories to be an essential aspect of the subject. Also note that the creator seems to fundamentally misunderstand how deletion review works. All that discussion did was prevent G4 speedy deletion, but by no means did it advocate to preserve this category on its merits. At DRV, they don't debate the merits of a page existing, only the procedural matters. Left guide (talk) 07:46, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: manual upmerge as described in Mclay1's comment. Clear consensus that these categories should not exist; as a WP:BARTENDER, I am choosing the option that preserves the "of Christians" if that is applicable. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:34, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Do we really need to diffuse by century and religion of the victim? Many of these seem to just be maassacress where the victims happened to be Christians SMasonGarrison 00:56, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Most articles are about religiously-motivated wars or religious persecution, but sometimes the perpetrators are just of a different Christian denomination, so then the title of the categories becomes quite awkward. Bottom line merging is probably for the better. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:58, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
Agreed. Thanks for doing a deeper dive. You know a ton more about religious nuances than I do. SMasonGarrison 22:54, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
If most are correctly classified as religious massacres then they should be merged with that, the category I was D'ing, and only removed on a case by case basis. Late Night Coffee (talk) 04:01, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose The categories were over populated. If you think they don't need to be fully D'ed then it needs to be M'ed with Category:Massacres of Christians instead. Late Night Coffee (talk) 03:37, 4 April 2026 (UTC) as well as the centuries. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 15:32, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
* Revised:
and definitely Keep Category:13th-century massacres of Christians because it contains 7 pages, and that is more than enough for a category:
  1. Albigensian Crusade
  2. Kisrawan campaigns (1292–1305)
  3. Massacre at Béziers
  4. Siege of Carcassonne
  5. Siege of Jerusalem (1244)
  6. Siege of Lavaur
  7. Siege of Safed (1266)
Manually merge the others with Category:Massacres of Christians in the 2nd millennium, IF they contain fewer than 3 pages after removing anything that doesn't belong in Category:Massacres of Christians.

  • I have added an 8th article to Category:13th-century massacres of Christians but size of the category is not really the issue anyway, imho. The problem is that the Albigensian Crusade concerned a conflict between two groups of Christians. It is odd to call it a massacre of Christians when the perpetrators are also Christians. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:19, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
It's still a religious conflict. They were killed for being the wrong type of Christians. If there are enough of the victim group it would be a subcategory for that group within Christians. You could make a sub-category if there are enough? But if that's small, that would get merged back to Christians so "of Christians" is where it belongs. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 14:52, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Dual upmerge per nom and also to Category:Massacres of Christians, then purge anything that doesn't belong per the above discussion. • Wikipedia categories are not a very reliable source for developments and stats anyway, so that is not a good reason to keep. Yet I am surprised that there are so many articles about French military engineers in particular. @Place Clichy: by any chance do you know why that is? Marcocapelle (talk) 04:49, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
That's unrelated to category discussions, but I believe it goes back to the 17th and 18th century. Articles Military engineering or wikt:engineer will confirm that the very notion of engineering was military in the first place before being used in the civilian world, even in the English language. However, at the time France became a highly centralized state, figures like Vauban made it into both an organized arm of the army and an organized science. Engineering schools such as École royale du génie de Mézières and École polytechnique were military schools, and the latter still is. This would compare with other powers of the time, e.g. Italy was probably the previous reference esp. about fortifications, but probably relied more on a myriad of individual talents. I was surprised when visiting the Vasa that such an ambitious and expansive ship was built without any such thing as a blueprint. Gribeauval for artillery and Jomini for logistics are representatives of this tradition and era. However I have nothing to do with these categories, which were mostly created and populated by User:VivatLondinium. @Marcocapelle: does this answer your question? Place Clichy (talk) 11:14, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
    • For sure it does, thank you very much! Marcocapelle (talk) 12:23, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep, a period/country/occupation intersection is quite standard, I don't get why people would want to get rid of this because "This is too many things intersected into one category". For example, we have 20 subcats in Category:16th-century French people by occupation. 4 of the 6 suggested categories already have 10 or more entries, so it's not as if these are small categories either (and they don't seem to be fully populated yet, articles like Reinaldo Oudinot, Charles Renard, André Sicre, Jean-Xavier Bureau de Pusy or Louis de Cormontaigne could go in this tree as well). Fram (talk) 08:34, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep: The intersection is not narrow simply because it's an intersection of multiple things. These categories are populated enough. I don't understand what we'd gain by upmerging them. Mclay1 (talk) 01:30, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Comment There are no other countries where we have split military engineers by century. An issue that comes up is that people will often be military engineers for decades. Splitting the profession by century does not seem to be very useful. I think in general if will aid navigation to just group all military engineers by nationality, I do not think we need to further divide by century.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:07, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
" An issue that comes up is that people will often be military engineers for decades. Splitting the profession by century does not seem to be very useful." ? This applies to most of these "people by century" categories, people are novelists, politicians, artists, musicians, ... for decades. Why is this a problem for military engineers? That we don't do this for other countries is probably because there are less military engineers with articles for those countries, and/or no one has gotten around to split them yet. The result of the discussion was: no consensus. Those in favour of a merge argued along the lines of WP:NARROWCAT and that the categories presented a trivial intersection, while those against argued that the location of states or territories were indeed defining features and that some of these categories were well-populated (refuting the WP:NARROWCAT argument for some cases). A potential rename was also mentioned, but the proposal did not gain traction. Policy- and guideline-based arguments were strong on both sides, and so thus I see no consensus to merge. Nominator's rationale: WP:NARROWCAT, trivial intersection. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:25, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose I don't think these are trivial intersections. The location of a state or territory in an essential feature of it.
Additionally, some of these categories such as Category:States and territories in Europe disestablished in 1945, Category:States and territories in Europe disestablished in 1945, and Category:States and territories in Europe established in 1946 have quite a few members. Comment: Whether or not proposed mergers go through, grouping top-level polities (countries) with all of their lower-level subdivisions and constituent units renders these categories useless in my opinion. – Vipz (talk) 09:56, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • It isn't always as clear whether it is top or lower level. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:42, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose and I don't see how something like Category:States and territories in Europe established in 1946, with 20 members, can be said to be a NARROWCAT issue. Fram (talk) 08:38, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment I do not like the current category name. I am not really convinced "states" and "territories" really covers what is going on, especially since we have a bunch of categories named Category:American x by state or territory. These categories actually group 3 different things 1-fully indepdent states 2-semi-autonomous territories, colonies, etc., that are often counted with states. 3-sub-national states, provinces, etc. that are normally not included in the other list. As Marcocapelle said it is often hard to parse which of these something is. What we need is a word that conveys what these are. Essentuially we have populated places and then these. I am not sure what term would be good, but I think the current term is not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:13, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Support, because this Europe series is only a short run of 6 years' subcats of the "states and territories" hierarchy. However, manual merge will be needed into the Europe parent categories, because some of the member pages are probably already also within sub-cats by country. – Fayenatic London 21:38, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry. LibStar (talk) 01:21, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
@LibStar The third category is a redirect, the category is at Category:Organisations based in Madagascar. AusLondonder (talk) 02:52, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
I will amend thanks. LibStar (talk) 03:29, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Category containing only a single article, Jisoo Han. Not useful for navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 00:52, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep. The article is about a criminal extradited by Egypt to Honduras for a crime committed there, which is relevant to international relations. Understandably, the relation shared by these two countries is a rather thin one as they are distant and somewhat small, which may explain why there is only one article at this time. But it is defining for that affair. Place Clichy (talk) 20:08, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Delete One article does not make a category. No merge is needed, he is already in other foreign relations categories for both Egypt and Honduras. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 21:17, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. Serious consideration should also be given to deleting the only article in the category, a biography of a person acquitted of a crime, which aligns poorly with WP:BLP1E. Rotary Engine talk 03:51, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
