Nominator's rationale: Except for Sudan→United Nations, every category for South Sudanese and Sudanese ambassadors contain no more than 3 articles, there is heavy overlap where an ambassador was non-resident or served multiple positions, and at least one ambassador has served for both South Sudan and Sudan. Most of the ambassador positions are non-resident, so no country of mission targets have been merged, though ambassadors can be added to a mission country if they are indeed resident. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:43, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: After filtering out expatriates, none of the pages in the tree are actually about Serbia and Montenegro (1992–2006), except possibly some of the pages in ambassador categories that I left out. In particular, all the pages that are directly in a nominated category are actually about Yugoslavia or post-2006 Serbia or Montenegro, and Category:United States–Yugoslavia relations is in the US subcategory as well. In fact, the Czechia and Slovakia ones contain a double anachronism, Czechoslovakia–Yugoslavia relations. The expatriate categories listed here contain only a single subcategory. Nor do we have an article that is directly about a bilateral relation of Serbia and Montenegro. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:17, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge to Yugoslavia categories. There is an ambiguity in Wikipedia if the country that existed between the 1992 Breakup of Yugoslavia and the 2003 creation of Serbia and Montenegro (itself dissolved in 2006), which called itself the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, should be called either Yugoslavia or, anachronistically, Serbia and Montenegro. I think this content may not be large enough to be populate an entirely independent tree. However, it should probably be merged to categories about Yugoslavia than simply deleted. Place Clichy (talk) 22:33, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. Articles are already in the Yugoslavia tree when appropriate, e.g. Norway–Yugoslavia relations is already in Category:Bilateral relations of Yugoslavia, so merging is not needed. Marcocapelle (talk) 00:05, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: This category is in use at one article only, Arlette Dagnon Vignikin. However, the article says this individual served as chargé d'Affaires, which is not the same as ambassador. AusLondonder (talk) 01:38, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
  • In italic is what I added just now after I read Place Clichy's comment below. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:39, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep. A chargé d'affaires is a head of mission who has every power of an ambassador except the title. It would probably be overkill to have parallel categories for the top diplomat of a nation to another nation depending on their title, such as envoy (title), plenipotentiary, minister plenipotentiary etc. These are routinely placed in ambassadors categories. Looking in Category:Ambassadors of the United Kingdom to China, I find many who were Chargé d'affaires (Cradock, Denson, Hopson, Hutchison, Lamb, O'Neill, Stewart, Trevelyan) or Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary (Alcock, Ingram, Jordan, MacDonald, Macleay, Parkes, Satow, Walsham). The not the same as ambassador rationale is wrong; we categorize by substance, not title. The real motivation seems to be that the nominator, from past and present nominations, seems not to see any interest in one-article, however relevant they are. If deleted, merge to Category:Benin–China relations and Category:Ambassadors to China. Place Clichy (talk) 08:35, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
I do not think we should keep this category at all. I think we should limit ambassador categories to people who were fully recognized as such by sending nations. Interim appointees should be kept in the diplomats categories. However if we want to place acting Ambassadors in the Ambassadors category we should still not keep this category since it only has 1 article and we would be best off merging it to Category:Ambassadors of Benin and Category:Ambassadors to China.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:24, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
What indication do you have that she was not recognized by the sending country? Of course she was. Chargés are not only interim appointees, they are also top diplomats when political or other considerations prevent the nomination of a full ambassador, as was e.g. the case between the UK and China from 1950 to 1972. Category:Benin–China relations is also a legitimate parent category. There are plenty of categories with 1 article which are useful, see Category:Polish popes. Place Clichy (talk) 00:00, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
If the country has decided not to give the person the rank of ambassador we should not override that decision and class the person as an ambassador even though the sending country did not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:22, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
Do you mean we should have separate parallel categories for Ambassadors from Foo to Bar, Chargés d'affaires from Foo to Bar, and maybe other titles such as Envoys from Foo to Bar, Ministers plenipotentiary from Foo to Bar when these are all heads of mission with various titles? This seems rather pernickety and impractical. We should categorize by substance, not title, and in fact we always have. Place Clichy (talk) 04:20, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
            • No, I mean we should limit ambassadors of foo to bar to people who were fully and reguarly recognized as the normal head of mission for that country. People who were not the normal head of mission, but only the acting head of mission, which is the case for charge d'afairs, would go in the Diplomats for Foo category, maybe we could if we had enough create a charge d'afiars for foo category. In general we do not sub-divide diplomats for foo categories by place where the person was assigned, we only make an exception in under ambassadors, and I think we should limit the ambassadorial category to people who had full regularly assignment, and not include people who were deliberately not given the full title. We should however under ambassadors include regular fully functioning and regularly appointed heads of mission who were given other titles such as minister plenipotentiary.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:23, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment This is a 1 article category. As such keeping it will actively hinder navigation.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:24, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
Comment. While I understand the "substance over title" argument, a one-article category is indeed very narrow. Perhaps we could merge this into a broader category like [[:Category:Benin diplomatic envoys]] until more articles about Beninese ambassadors to China are created. Guwiqiie (talk) 06:24, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
We have Category:Diplomats for Benin which is the parent category to Ambassadors of Benin, Foreign ministers of Benin and directly holds articles on Diplomats for Benin that did not hold either of those offices. For some countries we also have consuls (representatives); military attaches and maybe some other sub-cats. Benin does not have any articlez directly in that category but Category:Diplomats for Sweden directly has over 30 artivles and Category:Diplomats gor China directly has over 50 articles.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:31, 19 April 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: no consensus. Supporters of the proposal argued it would promote consistency, while opponents of the proposal argued that the use of "in" is superior to "of" for small establishments. After four months of slow discussion, I perceive almost equal support between both sides, and believe that consensus to rename is unlikely to develop in the foreseeable future. • Support and rename all other out-of-sync bookstore categories to of. It may not apply so much to independent stores, but I believe the reason there is a category at Category:Bookstores of the United States is that all company categories (should) use of, because companies are categorised by where they are based. A company may have stores all over the world, but it wouldn't make sense to categorise a French company as a Malaysian company just because they opened a shop in Malaysia. So the company categories should be harmonised. Mclay1 (talk) 07:33, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: These recently created categories seem like classic non-defining intersections per WP:EGRS SMasonGarrison 12:49, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete, huge tree of container categories and only two subcategories with actual content at the lowest level, this does not contribute to navigation between articles. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:23, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete/merge having all these holding categories is not helpful.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:07, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep and populate, unless there is a good reason why we have these for women and can't have them for men. I'll try to populate "male royalty" as an example, but please don't delete the others just because they aren't yet populated. Fram (talk) 09:53, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
  • The reason why we have more women categories than men categories is that in the past (and partially in the present) societies were largely men-dominated. So there is more literature specifically about women than specifically about men. Marcocapelle (talk) 01:36, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
But many of these categories have little to do with "is there any literature available", we had empresses and princesses in the female royalty cat, but not emperors or princes in the male royalty cat. So Category:Male royalty now has 5 very large subcats, and seems like a well-populated, perfectly defining intersection, contrary to the nom and the delete votes. Category:Men by role now also has 7 subcats, parallel to the same cats in the women category. Fram (talk) 08:34, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
    • The idea is that because women in an occupation is a notable topic while men in an occupation is not, we can have women in occupation categories but do not need to have separate men in occupation categories under gender-neutral occupation categories. But that idea does not work here because there is no gender-neutral word for emperors and empresses together. In many other cases the occupation is a gender-neutral term so then the idea can work. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:14, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
Oh right, I don't plan on creating or populating "men" cats for roles where 95% are men. I created Category:Women painters more than 15 years ago (now populated through subcats by many 1000s of articles) and not one for male painters, because that was the default (it was created eventually 5 years later anyway). In any case, there are enough subcats for male only royalty or make only roles and so on for these to exist (both as being populated, and as being clearly defining). Fram (talk) 13:42, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep and populate - I created most if not all of these and I think they will be useful. In some ancient cultures, there were large numbers of female royals due to monarchs taking multiple wives. I would add also that the women by role category includes sisters and wives, why can't we have an equivalent male category for brothers and husbands? John Cross (talk) 21:32, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
Please review EGRS before making more categories. SMasonGarrison 22:03, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
Please don't discourage people from making good categories like these, and please don't nominate useful categories which can easily be populated for deletion. It's hardly "non-defining" for royalty whether they are male or female, when e.g. many countries had laws either disallowing women of becoming the monarch, or only allowing it if no male direct heir was available. Gender is clearly a defining characteristic for royalty (as it is for many, many things in society, certainly in a historical perspective). Fram (talk) 07:51, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
Hello. I have reviewed EGRS. John Cross (talk) 21:55, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
I think you would make a more compelling aargumentif you explained how Male royals is a defining combination. The key element I was thinking of from EGRS is this line:
    >"Do not create categories that intersect a particular topic (such as occupation, place of residence, or other such characteristics) with an ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or disability, unless that combination is itself recognized as a defining topic that has already been established (in reliable sources showing substantial existing research specific to the topic), as academically or culturally significant in its own right."
Is there something defining about being male and royal, compared to just being royal? Saying that men and women are different, in my opinion, is not a very compelling case. So it would be helpful if you can point to scholarship on these intersections. WP:CATGENDER has some additional relevant advice on this. SMasonGarrison 17:25, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
I am not new to Wikipedia but there are a large number of policies on the site that I have had little to no experience of. I will do my best to put a case here:
There is research specifically on the sons of monarchs:
There is something different about being male and royal in many cultures. In many countries/eras, the rules on succession either prohibited female succession to the throne or gave preference to males. See for example Patrilineality#Agnatic_succession and Imperial Household Law. In some cultures, the expectations on male royals were different and they have been expected to be warriors for example where female relatives and non-royals were not. In some cases, younger males were at greater risk from rivals. See also Dauphin of France (the title given to the heir apparent to the throne of France). Philip II of Spain was also jure uxoris King of England and Ireland from his marriage to Queen Mary I - meaning he was King of England by right of wife. There was no equivalent 'by right of husband' concept.
In some cultures, male royals could actually be in the minority due to male monarchs taking multiple wives.
Looking at the nobility more broadly, there are many titles that can essentially only be held by men e.g. in the UK, the title of Marquess is almost exclusively restricted to men. The closest female equivalent is Marchioness but this is the title held by the wife of a Marquess and not something that can be inherited.
Putting nobility to one side, I don't see why brothers and fathers categories cannot be in a men by role category in the same way that sisters and mothers categories are in the women by role category.
I feel like we are in danger of deleting on block without really considering the merits of each category.
Thank you for reading this far.
John Cross (talk) 06:37, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
We have plenty of sources about e.g. the image of masculinity royals were supposed to project, or the Salic law regulating the royal succession through the male line. A book like "Royal Persons
Patriarchal Monarchy and the Feminine Principle" shows that royalty and gender is a notable topic. And already having subcats specifically for royal males (emperors, princes, ...) and not allowing these to be grouped by that characteristic is just very weird. Fram (talk) 08:05, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Following the renaming of physicians to medical doctors, "Infectious disease physicians" was speedy renamed to Category:Infectious disease medical doctors along with all the nationality subcategories, except American and Canadian, which are now out of step with the rest of the tree. The whole tree might be better being renamed to "Infectious diseases specialists" per the usage in Infectious diseases (medical specialty). Mclay1 (talk) 10:36, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). GoldRomean (talk) 18:30, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Redundant and useless categories about bilateral relations containing no articles and only expatriate/descent/emigrants categories. Not useful for navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 09:55, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Useless and redundant category layer. Contains only the sub-category Category:Algeria–Yugoslavia relations. Serves no purpose. AusLondonder (talk) 09:48, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:06, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Category containing only a single article on the Afghan embassy in Tokyo. Not useful for navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 09:39, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete, another example of non-residential ambassadorship. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:07, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete This is the most ludicrous example of bad categorization that I have seen. An embassy only goes in the bilateral relations category between the county that has established it and the country that it is in. I do not care how much it may handle relations with additional other countries, that is the only bilateral relations category it goes in at all.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete The article should be in a Singapore and a Philippines bilateral relations category, but this one is too small to stand on its own. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 23:30, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per John Pack Lambert. LibStar (talk) 23:59, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: More non-defining categories for non-resident ambassadors containing only a single article per category. Useless for navigation and adding to over-categorisation of individual articles. AusLondonder (talk) 08:14, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete, we should not categorize non-resident ambassadorship. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:27, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure). GoldRomean (talk) 03:01, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry. LibStar (talk) 05:30, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge, this is not helpful for navigation. But I assume that the 2nd merge target should be Deaflympic medalists in country. And the silver and bronze medalists of these countries should be merged too. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:51, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
For example, Deaflympic medalists in Australia only contains 3 cats all at CfD so I've suggested merging Deaflympic gold medalists for Australia to a higher parent cat. LibStar (talk) 23:14, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Upmerge single-article categories. It should also be noted that the Category:Deaflympic medalists tree does not currently respect the WP:ENGVAR spelling of "medallists" for relevant countries. Mclay1 (talk) 10:39, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Three-member subcategory of the eponymous category, which only has the self-titled series article and the film. Not helpful for navigation. ScalarFactor (talk) 00:29, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge, the limited total number of articles in the category tree does not justify diffusion. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:13, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
