Category:ISIL activities by year

Nominator's rationale: Extremely similar to the recently closed cfd that merged Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2026 March 28#Category:ISIL-related incidents by year Practically the only contents in here are the subcat ISIL attacks in YEAR SMasonGarrison 18:27, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge/delete, the tree of Category:ISIL attacks by year already covers it. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:49, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
Do all of the subcategories of activities fit in attacks?
"...the only contents in here are the subcat ISIL attacks in..." I hadn't finished filling the categories, so far it's only attacks, but this is because I hadn't started on the other activities subcategories. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 08:00, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep the objections to "-related" were that it was non-standard / non-defining. This exactly matches a parent category in the tree (the parent category uses the long name of ISIL). Many other groups have a similar "activities" category. It is a very standard category, that fits with other categories and doesn't have the problems that got the "ISIL-related incidents" set deleted.
Late Night Coffee (ping me) 07:23, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
This is not response to the issue being raised abouy the intersection between activity and year. SMasonGarrison 12:06, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
That is not the issue you raised in your nomination. The issue you raised in your nomination is the overlap between attacks and activities. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 01:54, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Category:Ambassadors of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic contains 24 sub-categories, 18 of which have only a single article. Many of these are for diplomats accredited to several countries. It should be noted that many of these "ambassadors" are accredited to countries which do not recognise the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a sovereign state. I have proposed merging to destination country categories where that country does have diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the ambassador was a resident posting. AusLondonder (talk) 15:15, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
Merge per nom. What happens if there was a resident position to a country that doesn't have diplomatic relations with SADR? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 15:19, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
In that case the country would not usually recognise the individual as an ambassador and their articles usually describe them as a "representative" of the Polisario Front so I haven't proposed merging to ambassador categories for the receiving country. AusLondonder (talk) 15:26, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Propose deleting Category:Recipients of the King Charles III Coronation Medal (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: WP:OCAWARD. As always, we do not indiscriminately create categories for recipients of every single award that exists -- categories are acceptable for certain special and WP:DEFINING high-level honours such as the Order of Canada, but not just for every single award on earth. This is not, for instance, a medal that would make people notable because they were given this -- certainly many of the 430,000 recipients already had preexisting notability for other reasons as it is, but being a recipient of this medal would not turn a person who wasn't already notable for other reasons into an encyclopedic topic per se. And when any of these people die, the King Charles III Coronation Medal is not going to be highlighted in their obituaries as a central aspect of what made them notable enough to be obituaried, either -- if it even gets mentioned at all, that'll be as a postscript to other, more notable things rather than as the notability hook in its own right.
So it simply isn't defining enough to warrant a category for it, because it isn't the thing that makes any of these people notable. Bearcat (talk) 14:54, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Category:Fictional animals by nationality

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

Nominator's rationale: Recently created category tree that is split in a trivial manner from the nationality tree, since most of the characters are funny animals. It is likely that all characters are in a subcategory of Category:Fictional animals. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:35, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't the targets be renamed to "characters" before this merge is implemented? Marcocapelle (talk) 20:27, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
Perhaps the issue raised in nom would warrant renaming the whole tree, yes. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:18, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose animals are not people.John Pack Lambert (talk) 23:01, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
@Johnpacklambert Do you have an alternative merge target? SMasonGarrison 19:15, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge to Category:Fictional animals. I do not think we have enough articles here to need a diffusion by nationality at all. There is also the complicated issue of when we assign nationality to fictional characters is it based on the nationality of the work they are from, or is it the nationality of the character in the story. These often do not match. The extreme example may be that in the oldest version of the story we have, Aladdin is said to be Chinese (from Cathay, but that is the same thing) but the setting has lots of aspects that are much more common in Southwest Asia than in China. Even with people we need to be careful to not assign things to a character that were never stated by the author (at one point Lucy van Pelt was in Category:Fictional American people of Dutch descent, something that Charles Schults never said, implied or explored about Lucy at all). I will say that we can categorize Ricky Ricardo as a fictional Cuban person, but we need to be very careful to only use these categories when they can be clearly supported by reliable sources.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:57, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
Should the articles be placed into the nationality targets where it's verifiable? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:05, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
I think it needs to be more the verifiable. 7 of the 16 articles in the British category are from Winnie-the-Pooh. That is verifiably set in Britain, but are the characters actually verifiably British? Is Padington Bear actually a fictional British animal, or is he a fictional Peruvian animal, or both? Is Speedy Gonzalez actually Mexican, or is he a Mexican American, or is it unclear? I would say if the trait is A-clearly verifiable that it is clearly a trait of the character in the story and B-if it is undoubably verifiable that the character is without question meant to be a national of a given place, than yes. Wilbur from Charlotte's web is not an American pig, even though he lives in the United States. We have to be able to verify that the fictional animal character in his own mind within the fictional work sees himself as a national of the country involved. Animals are default stateless. So I would say all Winnie-the-pooh animals do not belong. Christopher Robin can go in fictional British people (I guess, the fact that he is named for and based on a very real British person makes me wonder, but I guess there is room to have both an article on the character Christopher Robin and a bio of Christopher Robin Milne. That said there is a TV series The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh where Christopher Robin is an American boy. Up until a few minutes ago the character Christopher Robin was in the category Fictional Wolrd War II veterans. A character who was last presented in his main literary form in 1928 cannot possibly be a fictional World War II veteran. I explained this issue a lot deeper on the talk page to the Christopher Robin article.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:01, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: "People from" category for a small town (pop. 534) without enough people from there to justify it. As always, every town that exists does not automatically get one of these the moment one person from that town has an article -- there would need to be at least five or six notables from that town before a town-level category was warranted, and for just one person we leave them at the county level. Navigation of the encyclopedia is not aided by obsessively microcategorizing everything down to the narrowest possible level of one-item categories. Bearcat (talk) 14:32, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge Categories are for navigation, not listing every attribute of a subject. Single-article categories do not assist in navigation - instead they make navigation more complicated and difficult. AusLondonder (talk) 14:34, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: "People from" category for a small ghost town without enough people from it to warrant one. As always, every place that exists does not automatically get one of these as a matter of course -- it would be fine if there were a significant number of people from the town (as in at least five or six, and preferably even more than that), but is not automatically needed for just one or two. But the only people filed here are one of the original settlers and his nephew -- the brother-slash-dad also has an article that hasn't been filed here, but even three people still isn't enough to justify a town-specific category, especially if all three of them are from a single family and the place is a short-lived ghost town that never really had any other notable residents. The county level is all that's required in the meantime. Bearcat (talk) 14:26, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: delete and rename Republic of the Congo relations categories to sort by "Congo", as proposed by Place Clichy. (non-admin closure) Staraction (talk · contribs) 19:34, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Propose renaming Category:Republic of the Congo–Mali relations to Category:Mali–Republic of the Congo relations
Nominator's rationale: Bilateral relations are ordered in alphabetical order. Every other category and article in Category:Bilateral relations of the Republic of the Congo and Category:Bilateral relations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo sorts those countries by their long names because the countries have no short name. Alternatively, we need to rename all the other categories and articles to sort them by "Congo". Mclay1 (talk) 03:48, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
The categories were tagged and linked to this discussion. Place Clichy (talk) 19:57, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: @Min Yu-Seok: Category moved from Category:Sino-Tibetan-speaking peoples without explanation in 2020, most of the subcategories are related to the ethnic group or need to be separated into root and people categories per WP:COPSEP. Arctic Circle System (talk) 05:32, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: The only category other than Northwest and Northeast Caucasian that this category contains is "Linguists of North Caucasian languages", which can easily be broken out into Northwest and Northeast as it is just two articles. There is nowhere near enough support for a North Caucasian language family to justify this category's existence. Arctic Circle System (talk) 04:02, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:57, 3 May 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: merge, only one article in the category, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:05, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
Merge, the only things the "Tibeto-Burman languages" have in common with one another are that they are Sino-Tibetan but not Chinese (or Bai or Cai-Long if those are taken as branches of Sinitic). There are very few linguists who consider it a phylogenetic group within Sino-Tibetan these days. Arctic Circle System (talk) 04:04, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep, perfect for navigation. When I come to Category:Bible translators (which is your preferred merge target surely, not the one you gave?), it is natural to see thel divided by language, no matter if there are 1 or 100 articles in those subcats. Having a dump of all smaller languages together just creates a mass of names without any information which could be helpful for, well, navigation. Fram (talk) 09:39, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
Although if, like argued below in other CFDs, the "concept" of Tibeto-Burman languages is the problem, then of course we should delete the cat. Fram (talk) 10:39, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, GoldRomean (talk) 02:37, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge to Category:Bible translators (the target in the nomination is a redirect). Single-article categories are not useful regardless of whether the parent category is divided into other languages or not. Mclay1 (talk) 09:39, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment Thinking about it further, perhaps a Category:Translators of the Bible into Sino-Tibetan languages category could be warranted? Though this obviously would depend on how many relevant articles and subcategories there are, but given it's Sino-Tibetan, surely there's enough for a moderately-sized category. Though there's also the question of whether dividing by language family rather than just languages would even be all that helpful for this subject. Arctic Circle System (talk) 00:29, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
Personally, I don't feel like language families would be useful groupings for this sort of category. Most readers aren't going to know which groups to find languages in. Mclay1 (talk) 12:22, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
