Category:Nawar people
- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure). GoldRomean (talk) 18:57, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Nawar people to Category:Dom people
- Nominator's rationale: Given that the term is considered derogatory, redirects to a section, and is likely used in a similar manner to "Gypsy" for various nomadic ethnic groups that are only loosely related to each other if they are related at all (see also Boat Dwellers, who are sometimes referred to as "Water Gypsies" despite not being related to Roma at all), I do not think this is a good basis for a category. If it is to remain, it should be renamed to something like "Doms of the Levant" (not Dom people per WP:COPSEP, but I'll move that after this discussion). Arctic Circle System (talk) 22:48, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- Rename per nom, also per article titles Dom people, Dom people in Syria. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:57, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- Renane to Dom people since that is what the article is named.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:08, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- rename per above --Lenticel (talk) 00:10, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Rename to which title?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 22:55, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
- @LaundryPizza03: my mistake, it should have been "merge" instead of "rename". Marcocapelle (talk) 03:31, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
- Merge per nom then split the non-people articles in Category:Dom people to something else. Mclay1 (talk) 11:49, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. There is clear consensus this category should not exist, and Fram and Mclay1 present reasonable arguments for a merge as a sensible alternative to deletion. (non-admin closure) GoldRomean (talk) 20:45, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:12th-century Italian cartographers to Category:12th-century Italian scientists
- Nominator's rationale: upmerge for now. underpopulated/isolated category. if not merged, it should be expanded to Medieval Italian cartographers SMasonGarrison 14:43, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
- Just delete, the article is already in Category:12th-century cartographers and I don't think a 12th-century cartographer counts as a scientist. If anything rather an artist. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:16, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- Delete per Marcocapelle.John Pack Lambert (talk) 23:05, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- Delete per Marcocapelle --Lenticel (talk) 00:32, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
- Support merge, not the deletion. From the article, it is clear he was a scientist, not an artist. Fram (talk) 08:58, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
- Delete Can't back up Fram. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 04:07, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

Relisting comment: Is a cartographer necessarily a scientist?

- Merge per nom. This one person at least appears to have been a scientist. He is currently in Category:Italian geographers, which is a subcategory of scientists. Mclay1 (talk) 11:52, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: C2D, article renamed. 162 etc. (talk) 18:31, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
- Rename; could have been speedied. Omnis Scientia (talk) 19:02, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
- No, this is not for speedy. The article was moved without discussion. (Substantively I do not have an opinion about this.) Marcocapelle (talk) 12:07, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

Relisting comment: I've moved the article again to SkyHawks due to unnecessary disambiguation. If you think it should be moved back to SkyHawks Parachute Team, please use an RM.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 22:30, 26 April 2026 (UTC)- I don't know that I love that. The parachute team isn't overly notable, and it's not unfathomable that sources might refer to one or any of the topics at Skyhawk as "SkyHawks". 162 etc. (talk) 16:18, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
- It is the only entry on Skyhawk that is in Camel case. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 21:34, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:Novels by Kim Stanley Robinson to Category:Works by Kim Stanley Robinson
- Nominator's rationale: So as to include Robinson's short stories and short story collections (The Planet on the Table, Escape from Kathmandu, The Blind Geometer) Prezbo (talk) 16:23, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- Rename per nom.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:34, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- We might alternatively just create Category:Works by Kim Stanley Robinson and keep Category:Novels by Kim Stanley Robinson as a subcategory of that. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:25, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- Agree with Marcocapelle. Category:Short stories by Kim Stanley Robinson and Category:Short story collections by Kim Stanley Robinson can also be created to house the appropriate articles to go in those. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 00:06, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

- @Johnpacklambert: what do you think of the alternative proposal? Marcocapelle (talk) 03:35, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
- I think we should upmerge to works. If there is a point where people can create 2 well filled sub-categories of works at the same time than that might work, but I think defaulting to works is better until we can have 2 well filled sub-categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:34, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
- Films, books, albums, etc. have well-established category schemes, while the "works by" is more of a catch-all when someone crosses over to other arenas (a novelist who begins writing screenplays for movies or a singer who becomes a director). We usually don't start off with "works by" category and build down once someone's written enough books. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 05:25, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

- Comment we should start with works and build down. Categories are meant to aid navigation. For this reason there is no good reason to ever have a 1 article category. Even less when there is a very easy way to have multiple articles in way more categories by thinking more broadly.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:56, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
- I wouldn't find that helpful at all. I am a heavy user of the "Albums by artist" category. How would it be helpful to have to look through a "works by category" first not knowing what are albums and what are other works until the artist has released enough albums to warrant its own albums category. So some would just be in Works and others would be in albums, making navigation more difficult. Specificity is better for that purpose. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:51, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars: I'm confused by what is being suggested by John Pack Lambert here. Upmerge the 22-member novels category to a Works category? That makes no sense. Forgive me if I am misunderstanding. Also, I found another uncategorized article for a short story (or novella) by Kim Stanley Robinson: Green Mars (novella). That's 4 articles, so that should be enough for a Short stories by Kim Stanley Robinson category. Remember, "Short stories by" categories can also contain collections if there aren't enough articles to warrant diffusion to a "Short story collections by" category. Similar to how Category:Poetry by writer categories contain poetry collections/books. Οἶδα (talk) 05:48, 10 May 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose. Nothing wrong with the category. Other related categories can always be created. But that is not a reason to delete or upmerge this one. Οἶδα (talk) 04:20, 26 May 2026 (UTC)

"clearly conveys a specific and defined relationship to a specific subject"

- A group claiming an attack
- Delete: Redundant to Category:ISIL terrorist incidents. Mclay1 (talk) 11:40, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
- Keep: In this context, a "claim" of responsibility for an attack is a very specific type of statement, it is not the same as the informal use of the word "claim" that would be covered by WP:OCASSOC. It is true that
"Claiming is not the same as being committed by them"
and that is the reason why the category is not redundant with Category:ISIL attacks or Category:ISIL terrorist incidents because not every attack attributed to ISIL is claimed by the group, and there is also at least one Wikipedia article about an attack claimed by ISIL that they probably did not do: June 2017 Jerusalem attack. For most groups this category wouldn't be useful, but ISIL are unusually prolific, unusually decentralised, and use false claims for attacks by other groups as part of their propaganda strategy, so this category is useful for ISIL. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 13:32, 3 May 2026 (UTC)- I don't see how this is a DEFINING feature of the event itself. SMasonGarrison 21:08, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
- I'll try to explain more clearly, with terminology matching the guidelines. A claim of responsibility is one of the key features used by academics and reliable media sources to categorise and describe terrorist attacks, so it fits the description of Wikipedia:Defining. The most dramatic example is the June 2017 Jerusalem attack, the claim is the main defining feature of that event as described on that page. Most media reports about that attack include the claim itself in the headline.[1][2][3] or opening paragraph.[1][4] A claim of responsibility is included in the top few paragraphs of many other pages about ISIL attacks, the current contents of the category are just the first few examples I found. I've also re-read WP:NONDEF and "claimed by" ISIL is not "trivial", not "subjective", and not "arbitrary". Late Night Coffee (ping me) 14:35, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
- But the claim itself isn't defining, who actually committed the attack is. Usually the claim gets early coverage because of the media vacuum, but my impression is that that early claim is not how the event is described later once the full story is actually uncovered. SMasonGarrison 01:57, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- The more I think about it the more I am convinced that this just needs so much context to make this category viable. @LateNightCoffee would you be open to converting this into a list? SMasonGarrison 02:05, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
"The more I think about it the more I am convinced that this just needs so much context to make this category viable."
What context would you add? Late Night Coffee (ping me) 15:49, 8 May 2026 (UTC)"would you be open to converting this into a list?"
Variables like number killed or wounded need to be in tables, but "claimed by" is a binary. "Claimed by" is a specific type of statement, related statements don't belong in the category. If the source just says ISIS "praised the attack" that's not the same, so that doesn't belong in the category. Various groups will often praise an attack by a rival group against a common enemy, but that's not "claimed by", it only belongs in the category if the statement is described as a "claim" as in ownership, e.g. "claimed responsibility for the attack" or "claimed credit for the attack". Late Night Coffee (ping me) 15:49, 8 May 2026 (UTC)- I have only found one page so far that is about a false claim June 2017 Jerusalem attack, if there were more then "false claims" could be a subcategory, like . But when it's just one page, it works best to put the details on that page. A table is also not an efficient way to show details that only apply to a small minority of events. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 15:49, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- ry reading the pages? If it is s confusing concept, then we could add background information about the concept tof claiming attacks o Social media use by the Islamic State or another suitable page. But there are over 300 pages about ISIL attacks and it's a simple binary of claimed or not claimed. So a category is the most efficient way to connect the subset they have claimed directly. A column for "claims" could be added to List of terrorist incidents linked to the Islamic State, as a way to improve that table, but it's not a good substitute for the category. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 16:02, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- Not everything needs to be a category. @LateNightCoffee Hence I asked if you would be open to converting it into a list. It is good to know that List of terrorist incidents linked to the Islamic State could be expanded instead of having this category.
- It is not a simple binary, and there is a lot of nuance in explaining what it means to be "claimed". If it were simple, you wouldn't have had to write this many comments trying to explain it. I'm not convinced by your argument for volume and efficiency that this is a defining feature.SMasonGarrison 17:43, 8 May 2026 (UTC)

- It is really not an ambiguous or complicated concept.
"If it were simple, you wouldn't have had to write this many comments trying to explain it."
Please read some of the pages. Categories need to be based on sourced information on the pages, not"but my impression"
, and I think most people would be able to understand this concept after reading the lead section for a few relevant pages. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 14:09, 12 May 2026 (UTC) - I said a list was not a substitute, we could have both, but this works best as a category. You haven't described how a list would work better? Death statistics need to be a table, because "ISIL attacks that killed 10 to 100 people" is WP:ARBITRARYCAT, but "claimed" is a simple binary: there is one specific key word, "claimed", that is very consistently used to describe terrorist attacks, particularly those by ISIL. If there are no reliable English language sources using that exact word, then the page doesn't belong in that category. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 14:09, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- True and false claims could go on a table, but if there are enough pages for that to be a table, it works better as two subcategories. In this case there is only one page about a false claim, a table is not an effective way to present details that are about just one event, those details fit better on that one page. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 14:09, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- What information could be presented effectively in a table that make that work better than putting the pages in a category? Late Night Coffee (ping me) 14:09, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- I have said repeatedly that a list is better because of how much context is needed, as well as how this feature isn't defining for the event itself. SMasonGarrison 16:34, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
It often occurs in the other order. In the 2025 Bondi Beach shooting one gunman was killed at the scene, the other was wounded and is now in jail. They were both named within 24 hours. He hasn't been convicted yet, but there are no other plausible suspects. Despite there being no"Usually the claim gets early coverage because of the media vacuum, but my impression is that that early claim is not how the event is described later once the full story is actually uncovered".
"media vacuum"
about"who actually committed the attack"
two statements from ISIS – one 4 days later and another months later – still received substantial media attention. The claim itself is widely reported as defining the nature of the event, even when the direct culprits are not ambiguous. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 15:49, 8 May 2026 (UTC)- The June 2017 Jerusalem attack is more often described as a false ISIS claim than it is described as an attack by the group who probably actually did it. The attackers names are known, but often not mentioned. The reports less frequently name the group who probably were responsible, despite that attribution being agreed on by everyone except ISIS. - Nominator's rationale: There is longstanding consensus per a RfC that we should not have Category:Antisemites or Category:Antisemitic groups. This category and its subcategories violate that consensus; inherently WP:SUBJECTIVECAT, there is no agreed upon definition of antisemitism, especially related to Palestine. PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:50, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

- A category equivalent to Category:Anti-Islam political parties would be about only religious antisemitism and persecution of religious Jews, and it would include Jewish atheists in anti-religious parties, the way anti-Islam groups include ex-Muslims. But "Antisemitism" combines that with racial antisemitism and the broader, disputed, definitions also includes anti-Zionism and Criticism of Israel. The narrowest definition of antisemitism includes only racial anti-semitism. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 00:48, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a valid argument; that may need to be deleted too. The problem is, if anything, worse with a category for political groups. PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:00, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

The examples I'm familiar with would all usually have "anti-Islam" in the top three things people describe them as. From Australia it has Rise Up Australia Party:
The aims of the party included opposition to multiculturalism, preserving Australia's "Judeo-Christian heritage" and cuts to Australia's "Muslim intake"
, but doesn't have One Nation or any of the numerous other broadly xenophobic or anti-immigration parties, and it doesn't have the Family First Party who are Christian extremists but more focused on marriage and sexual health. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 01:49, 15 May 2026 (UTC)

- In view of your concern, I have added the following phrase:
This category is used for political parties that Holocaust denial or are antisemitic in the classical sense; it should be distinguished from anti-Zionist political parties.
ProgramT (talk) 05:05, 26 April 2026 (UTC)- Category:Antisemitic political parties and Category:Anti-Islam political parties are incomparable in the sense that many possible antisemitic political parties would contest that label on definition grounds, while many anti-Islam political parties would have no issue with that label. Having said that, I am not sure we should keep Category:Anti-Islam political parties either because for many of these parties Islam is just one of many issues on their list. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:09, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

Most Category:Political parties in Palestine and most Category:Anti-Zionist political parties are not included in the Category:Antisemitic political parties; the current antisemitic political parties category is commonly used by far-right political parties in Europe and the United States. - The fact that so much explanation is needed for the current content is a confirmation of the ambiguity of the concept. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:48, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
- The Houthis are explicitly anti-Jewish, but I looked at the citations for Hamas and they are more ambiguous.
- The defining feature of Hamas is "anti-Israel" or "anti-Zionist". The alleged Holocaust denial is based on a few quotes, that mostly don't have adequate context to interpret. Some dispute the relevance of the Holocaust, which is different to disputing the reality. There are a few quotes that do have enough context to look less ambiguous, but they're all from one politician, Rantisi, that is one politician, not a political party. He was the leader for less than a month before being assassinated, over 20 years ago. The Rantisi quotes are also tertiary sources citing other secondary sources, which is not ideal.
- The most detailed Holocaust denial accusations against a Palestinian politician are against Mahmoud Abbas, the current president, from Fatah's moderate faction. There is a stronger case for including Fatah in this category, but I don't think many people would find that credible.
- A handful of quotes in a 38-year history wouldn't get most parties put in this category. If we set the same threshold for Category:Anti-Islam political parties it would contain about half the political parties in the Western world, but it doesn't and it shouldn't. - Most anti-Zionist political parties are not included in the antisemitic political parties; the Houthis are included because they "curse" the Jews themselves as well as the Zionists/Israel, with Hamas voicing its Holocaust denial views. - Category:Antisemitic political parties and Category:Anti-Islam political parties are incomparable in the sense that many possible antisemitic political parties would contest that label on definition grounds, while many anti-Islam political parties would have no issue with that label. Having said that, I am not sure we should keep Category:Anti-Islam political parties either because for many of these parties Islam is just one of many issues on their list. - Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:09, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
Rather than delete the entire Category:Antisemitic political parties, why not just limit them to political parties in Europe (Category:Antisemitic political parties in Europe) and North America (Category:Antisemitic political parties in North America)? The existing Category:Antisemitic political parties is to switch to the Wikipedia:Container category. "Antisemitic political party" has been an important term in Western politics since before 1945, and therefore a category is essential.Of course, this is a compromise, so if you don't give up on the delete view, I will continue to support Hamas or Hezbollah being included in the Category:Antisemitic political parties. ProgramT (talk) 05:38, 26 April 2026 (UTC)– I cancel this proposal, as anti-Zionism and antisemitism must be strictly distinguished, but there are also obvious cases where the two appear at the same time. ProgramT (talk) 06:28, 26 April 2026 (UTC)- If we exclude the many anti-Zionist organizations in the Middle East we will end up with neo-Nazi or fascist parties. We already have categories for that. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:12, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
- However, many antisemitic political parties in Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries were right-wing conservative and not far-right fascist. ProgramT (talk) 06:25, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
- Like with most anti-Islamic parties today, antisemitism was not what parties in that period were primarily about. It was not a defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:03, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

- Delete The definition of Antisemitic is too broad and disputed, and has changed too much over time. It conflates racial antisemitism, religious antisemitism, and sometimes anti-Zionism. Several narrower categories might be more valid, but I can't think of anything feasible that we don't already have, e.g. we already have Category:Anti-Zionist political parties, and that is the only one that would plausibly be a policy instead of an accusation for any current political parties.
