Nominator's rationale: "item" is not a meaningful distinction between Category:Wikipedia item cleanup and Category:Wikipedia cleanup. Some subcategories, e.g. Category:Articles lacking ISBNs, should be under the tree of Category:Wikipedia template parameter issues.
Another example of a member of this category is Category:Uncategorized pages – it's already under Category:Wikipedia category cleanup. —andrybak (talk) 23:06, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Dual merge to parent category. has less than three articles in each. Omnis Scientia (talk) 22:59, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't it be a dual merge to both parent categories? There is also Category:Cultural depictions of Bernie Madoff with overlapping content. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:22, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
@Marcocapelle, good point on the dual merge. I'll add those. Should the Madoff cultural depiction category also be merged with "Works about the Madoff scandal"? Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:53, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: We simply don't need this category. We have a single article on Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting conspiracy theories and the rest of the category is formed by the categories Category:Alex Jones and Category:Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists. Note that Alex Jones and his ilk are conspiracy theorists, not conspiracy theories. They belong in Category:Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Pichpich (talk) 19:37, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
There's nothing to merge really. Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting conspiracy theories is already in Category:Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the conspiracy theorists category is in the subcategory Category:People associated with the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which I've submitted for a merge to Category:Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting (see entry right above!) Caegory:Ancient Greek slaves and freedmen

  • Nominator's rationale There are 25 categories in Category:Slaves by former country. 20 of them use in. 2 more have current nominations to change to using in. The only one that is now not nominated for a change is one that uses "under" because the named thing is a dynasty not exactly an empire. This rename will give us more consistency among categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:10, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename for consistency. I don't think that "ancient" needs a capital though. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:24, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename to match title conventions for similar categories. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 23:00, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Don't rename, because doing so will dramatically change the scope of the categories in ways that cannot have been intended, and will inevitably cause confusion for both editors and readers. Ancient Greeks and Romans could have lived anywhere throughout the Mediterranean world, or even beyond—in Gaul, Britain, Germany, along the Danube frontier, the Black Sea coast, Mesopotamia, etc. By renaming these categories "in ancient Greece" you're suddenly restricting a cultural category to a small fraction of its geographic extent—even more so with "in ancient Rome". People categories should not be treated this way, because people are mobile, not rooted to a specific location.
Right now these categories include slaves and freedmen who were ethnically or culturally Greek or Roman, irrespective of where in the Greek or Roman worlds—or even beyond them—they happened to go. There is no benefit to limiting their geographic scope to a small region or to one city—even if it is Rome. You could argue that these terms can be extended to persons of Greek or Roman origin beyond the places specified—in spite of the ordinary and specific meaning of the preposition in—but that merely creates confusion as to whether people who are clearly includable now should be included or excluded, or whether they would or wouldn't be found in these categories. Why take something that's clear now and make it ambiguous? Consistency is vastly overrated when we're talking about sacrificing clarity and usefulness in order to achieve it. P Aculeius (talk) 05:42, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment Ancient Rome is a term that covers both the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. It is not limited to just the city. If we cannot document these people being either slaves or freedmen in something we would consider Ancient Rome or Ancient Greece I do not think we should include them in the category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:17, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
So in your judgment, a Roman slave living in Gallia Belgica, a camp in Dacia, a colony in Numidia, is "in ancient Rome", which I take it you mean means the entire Roman empire, from end to end. Or do I have that right? Because the next editor who comes along may not read it that way, and may be astonished to find the category populated with people who lived hundreds of miles away, across the sea, who may never have seen Rome. And that editor might then begin removing those persons systematically from a category that appears to exclude them. In fact the entire WikiProject might be enlisted in paring the category contents down to what its title says it should include. Leaving who knows how many entries uncategorized by the key trait that they have in common—and suggesting that what we need to create instead is a new category called "Ancient Roman slaves and freedmen". Which we currently have. And then that category gets nominated for deletion because it's inconsistent with the titles of other articles, and we already have a category for slaves and freedmen in ancient Rome.
So let's talk about Greece, shall we? Archimedes has three slaves who go on to be notable. In Syracuse, the largest city in the Greek world. Which isn't in Greece, but Sicily! You might think, "well, Magna Graecia is part of Greece". Will the next editor reviewing the articles' categorization agree? They surrender to the Romans. One goes to Rome, one ends up in Carthago Nova with Scipio, one is given his freedom and travels to Massalia, then Sardis in Lydia. All of them are Greek; none of them are in Greece or Magna Graecia; one lives in Greek colonies that are hard to say are in ancient Greece, the other two wind up elsewhere. Under our current categories, all three are included in "ancient Greek slaves and freemen"; under the proposed category names two of them are excluded and the third may be, but that will depend on how other editors choose to interpret in ancient Greece. Ironically the other two could be included under "slaves and freedmen in ancient Rome", but not Greece. But that also depends on other editors agreeing that anywhere in the Roman empire is in ancient Rome, which we can't take for granted.
We have two categories here that are relatively unambiguous with their current names, which become incredibly ambiguous with the proposed names. It's no good saying, "well, my definition is... and I propose everyone else observe that", because there's no way to ensure that other editors will do so, or that readers will understand what that definition is or why. All so that the category names will be consistent with the names of other categories. Consistency is overrated! P Aculeius (talk) 14:04, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
      • This is not about what I think Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome are. They are about what the articles themselves cover. We have Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome as articles. The scope of what the articles cover is what would be the scope of the categories. I am not saying what my definition is, I am saying what the definition used in the articles is.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:00, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
But you're counting on everyone else to know, understand, and adhere to those broad definitions when categorizing or uncategorizing other articles about individuals. And that's not a realistic expectation when the language you use is at best ambiguous and at worst seems to contradict those definitions. Because it's only a very clumsy, awkward and inaccurate definition that allows us to say "in ancient Rome" means "anywhere that was, at least nominally, under the control of the Roman state". I'm not arguing that people don't use it that way; merely that not everyone uses it that way—and we don't apply that definition to most other places; that itself is inconsistent. If you say "in the United States", you don't mean "the Philippines after the United States seized it from Spain", and if you say "in France" very few English speakers will think you could mean to include people who spent their entire lives in Algeria, even when it was technically part of France for over a century.
And things become even hairier when you say "in ancient Greece", since most readers will assume that this means an area roughly contiguous with the region known today as "Greece", unaware that over a millennium the Greeks colonized Asia Minor, parts of Italy, France, and elsewhere in the Mediterranean, including Egypt, before being absorbed into the Roman world. Many of the most important Greek settlements were far from Greece, and are rarely spoken of as being "in Greece".
Ultimately, there is no good reason to substitute ambiguous category titles for unambiguous ones. Consistency with other category titles is not a good reason to create an unnecessary conflict between the literal definitions and the clumsy, metaphorical extension of places to mean "anywhere the cultures of those places touched". P Aculeius (talk) 13:58, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
      • People need to understand the definition of terms before they start building categories. By linking the names to actual articles we make it very easy for people to understand what those terms mean. Those articles provide defitions of the terms.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:07, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Rename Category:Japanese slaves to Category:Slaves in Japan
  • Nominator's rationale 27 of the 41 sub-cats of either Category:Slaves by nationaity or Slaves by former country use the in form. We primarily sort slaves by where they were when they were slaves. This rename will put the category in line with most of the other contents in the category. Of the 14 categories that do not use this form at least 4 are currently nominated for being renamed and 1 is nominated for being upmerged. We also use in in the parent Category:Slaves in Asia as well as in the other by continent categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:04, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Category:Flags of indigenous peoples

Nominator's rationale: Currently, this category suffers from extreme semantic drift and violates WP:OC (Overcategorization). It conflates sovereign state flags (e.g., Israel and Bhutan), administrative provincial flags (e.g., Balearic Islands and Asturias), and actual indigenous minority flags (e.g., Aboriginals and Sámi). Categorization should be defining. For a sovereign state or an administrative region of a modern European country, the "Indigenous" label is not a defining characteristic in an encyclopedic context, their sovereignty or administrative status is. Including them here creates a false equivalence between established governments and marginalized/stateless peoples. I propose tightening the inclusion criteria to exclude sovereign states and top-level administrative divisions of non-indigenous-majority states. Miiversal (talk) 15:02, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Comment I added a connection to the proposed name and removed unneeded quote marks. I have not decided on what else I feel on this category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:45, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Question do we have Category:Flags of former countries? We have category:Obsolete national flags. However that based on its name is for flags that counties no longer use. A flag for a country that no longer exists would be something else.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:51, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
    @Johnpacklambert: You should create that. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:52, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge to Category:Ethnic flags but exclude from both any flags that are used by any actual government, unless we have an article that is just on the use of the flag as an ethnic symbol. I really do not think it makes sense for use to have category:African-American flags seperated from a lot of other flags just because we know in broad terms when African-Americans ancestors came to live where they do now. The controlling thing here is that this is a flag used to sympbolize a group that does not have a government unit to identify with. The flag is not used as the flag by a specific government.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:53, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

The word single in relation to school means that the school is single gendered one okwedarious (talk) 18:32, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • That would be entirely duplicative because there is already Category:Boys' schools in Uganda and Category:Girls' schools in Uganda. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:33, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Recently created 1-article category. Article fits nicely, and is already in, Category:Irish diaspora sports clubs in Scotland and Category:Diaspora association football clubs. Gjs238 (talk) 12:20, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Anti-Ukrainian sentiment

Nominator's rationale: purge, this is mere circumvention of WP:OPINIONCAT. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:33, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
Purge Per the precedent regarding Category:Climate change deniers, this is also a BLP issue. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 20:41, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Propagandist Anton Krasovsky lost his job for calling to drown and burn to death Ukrainian children in live state television . Quite the defining moment for a biography, probably worth having a category over. Several other individuals' contributions to the hate campaign have likewise had real-life palpable consequences. Many of these have worked up for decades the justification of the current war with its aim of destroying and assimilating an entire people. These are not mere "opinions". Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary level of indirection, not helpful for navigation. Eponymous category only has the series article with a ' ' defaultsort, the novels should be the rest of the slots. (Can WP:C2F work in reverse to merge to an otherwise empty eponymous category?) ScalarFactor (talk) 05:17, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Per ISO_639-3#Non-language_codes this is not an actual language one can speak. It should be deleted and excluded from the Babel system by editing MediaWiki:Babel-category-override just like Category:User mul, Category:User und, and Category:User zxx are. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:43, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure). GoldRomean (talk) 03:56, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: rename for two different reason. First, while the category is only populated with kings of Galicia–Volhynia there were also other claimants on the title King of Ruthenia. In other words, as category name it is ambiguous. The second reason is that the founder of Galicia–Volhynia, Roman the Great, is annoyingly not included in this category because he was a duke rather than a king.
