The result of the discussion was: No consensus * Pppery * it has begun... 23:55, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:EPON and WP:NARROWCAT. These categories contain few articles directly about the subject and are primarily populated by multi-team arenas and categories for their respective coaches and players. User:Namiba 16:12, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep. Part of a well-established category scheme to contain player and coach categories as well as articles. Mike Selinker (talk) 19:16, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
Per WP:EPON, "Eponymous categories should not be created unless enough directly related articles or subcategories exist."--User:Namiba 20:44, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Merge Eponymous categories need to at an absolute minimum contain either 1 article besides the eponymous article or at least 2 sub-cats. Even at those levels their utility is debatable. When they only contain the main article and 1 sub-cat there is no reason at all for us to have the category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:56, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep, why would we e.g. put Category:Baltimore Bandits players plus the three articles in the Bandits category directly in the Category:Ice hockey teams in Baltimore? That's not a logical sequence. Plus the merge reasoning above fails for two of the three as they meet even that "absolute minimum", and only upmerging the third one doesn't help anyone. Fram (talk) 08:44, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
Obviously, selectively merging is needed in this case.--User:Namiba 15:27, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep Skipjacks/Alt Merge the Other Two Agree with Fram here, the Skipjacks seems fine and the merge target for the player subcats should be changed. Merge Category:Baltimore Bandits players and Category:Baltimore Clippers players to Category:Ice hockey in Baltimore per WP:OCEPON. - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:28, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
The Skipjacks category contains only Baltimore Skipjacks, the arena in which they and 16 other teams have played, and categories for players and coaches. I don't see how this is enough to justify a category.--User:Namiba 01:59, 16 December 2025 (UTC)

1 article categories in Category:College men's track and field athletes in Alabama

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 01:27, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Nominator's rationale all of these categories have no more than one article. The first three I think we should merge up to make navigation easier. I am not sure all the targets are justified either (mainly the x college/university track and field) but this is a big enough nomination for now. The last category only has a redirect. I am not sure if we really want to categorize that redirect, so I would not oppose just plain deletion, but maybe it is a justified categorzation, but we should not have a category just to have a redirect. I do not think that makese any sense at all.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:37, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep the first three, delete the last. Part of a well-established scheme of sorting athletes by school. But there's no reason to have a category just for redirects. Mike Selinker (talk) 21:33, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
    • Comment With the end of the small category guidelines "well established schemes" are no longer justified reasons to keep categories, especially 1 article categories. 1 article categories that include biographies of living people actively make it harder to abide by biogrpahy of living people guidelines. 1 article categories hinder navigation by making it harder to navigate between articles.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:51, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
"1 article categories that include biographies of living people actively make it harder to abide by biogrpahy of living people guidelines" -- can you expand on this? --Habst (talk) 21:12, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
    • Biographies of living people should only have text supported by citations and only be in categories supported by the text. If the category is not supported by text we need to remove it immediately. However of there is only 1 article in a category we must take it to CfD to remove it, which takes at least 7 days.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:30, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
As has been explained to you repeatedly, this is completely false. If a BLP category is not supported by the text, then either source it or remove it from the article. If that results in an empty category, the cat will be speedy deleted a few days later. There is no rule that you need to keep categories in articles if removing it would empty the cat, as long as the cat truly doesn't belong on the article. Emptying a cat because you think one-article cats are bad would be wrong: emptying a cat because the categorization was wrong or BLP problematic on the articles is the right thing to do though. Fram (talk) 10:42, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Upmerge per nom. It's not useful to have categories with only one article. They can be recreated if more content can be added in future. Mclay1 (talk) 23:37, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep (apart from the redirect one), turning Category:College men's track and field athletes in Alabama into a large group of names without distinction by college is not helpful for readers. Fram (talk) 08:38, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep per Fram, no opposition to upmerging the Category:Troy Trojans men's track and field athletes (although an even better solution would be to find other WP articles to put in there -- for example, Titus Dixon and many others you can find with this search query). One-article categories are allowed on Wikipedia, partially because it takes some effort to create a category but significantly less to add an article to a category. So long as the categories follow proper naming conventions and there's likelihood that other WP articles may be added -- and in this case, I think there's a high likelihood -- they should be kept. --Habst (talk) 21:18, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
It doesn't take much of an effort to create a category, it takes some effort to create a useful category by populating it. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 10:17, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
As someone who has created and populated hundreds of categories I respectfully disagree. I just found another example item to populate Category:Troy Trojans men's track and field athletes with a simple search; creating these categories on the other hand takes hours and a lot of research to determine e.g. what format to use, which container categories to use, and which Wikidata item to link it to. --Habst (talk) 14:12, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Merge for Now These tiny 1 article cats make navigation harder by requiring more clicks across articles and the merges keep the biographies in both the school team category and the state sports categories. - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:19, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment not one of these colleges has an article on the colleges track and field team. Which indicates these colleges track and field teams are not likely well known or significant.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:09, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

Category:Winnipeg Fury

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Manual upmerge. More support for removing categories due to small size than keeping exactly as they are. Moving player subcats to "Sport in X location" categories seems to make sense, but may not work in every circumstance. Whoever implements the upmerging can use their discretion and open a new discussion for hard-to-resolve cases if need be. -- Beland (talk) 02:05, 29 March 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: The categories contain at maximum one eponymous article, one category (most often a players-category) and one file. Hence, there are not enough directly related articles or subcategories (WP:OCEPON) for these eponymous categories to exist. All subcategories and eponymous articles are sufficiently categorised. • Keep and trout to everyone. First one I checked, Category:Muğlaspor, has subcat Category:Muğlaspor footballers. Deleting the nominated cat would remove this cat from Category:Sport in Muğla. Not an exception, the above proposal would e.g. also remove Category:Gebzespor footballers from the local cats. "Oh sorry, we didn't look far enough down the list"? Nope, the very first one would remove Category:Winnipeg Fury players from all Winnipeg categories. The subcats are not "sufficiently categorised" and the nom is thus incorrect. Fram (talk) 10:02, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Keep. Part of a well-established scheme of sorting soccer subcategories. Mike Selinker (talk) 22:40, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Delete All/Manually Merge Some Players Subcats These are too narrow to aid navigation but Fram makes a good point that some players subcats should be manually merged the player subcat merge targets don't make sense. • Upmerge the eponymous articles and player subcategories to the "sport in location" parent categories (or equivalent) per above. The nominator's rationale for deleting these categories is correct (besides the comment on the contents being "sufficiently categorised"), but obviously we don't want to lose the categorisation of the contents. The !votes for keeping purely to avoid losing that categorisation aren't well considered in the same way as the !votes to delete without consideration for the contents. Nominator's rationale: WP:C2C: consistency with all parent categories, which are called Football (organis/zations) in Fooland (Australia: Soccer), as well as Sports organis/zations of Fooland. 4 country categories have only 1 page, and can be triple-upmerged. Indirect follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 October 11#Category:Argentinian syndicalists. Sidenote: For some reason, Category:Greek association football supporters' associations has the word 'association(s)' twice in the catname. I suppose there's no risk of confusion with non-association football, so the first 'association' can be removed per WP:C2C. NLeeuw (talk) 20:59, 4 December 2025 (UTC)

  • Propose Deleting Category:Artists in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:PERFCAT and WP:TRIVIALCAT
This categories groups biography articles for artists based on whether they have 1 or more works of art at this museum. Famous artists have works hanging on the walls of lots of museums so this does not seem defining. Expanding this tree would lead to category clutter. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:22, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete this is not defining to the artists. The artists are not at all defined by what museums have their work.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:04, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:17, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete both. Having works in a particular museum's collection is not a defining quality of a given artist, so Category:Artists in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection should be deleted. I don't think "artists" should be considered a subset of "museum people"; the latter term is intended more for people who work for that museum, have bequeathed artworks to that museum, etc. Ham II (talk) 16:48, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Support and listify Category:Artists in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection. That's why we have Category:Lists of artists by museum. Mclay1 (talk) 23:43, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
Not opposed to a list at all, but I'm not volunteering to create one because the intro to Smithsonian American Art Museum says more than 7,000 artists are represented. RevelationDirect (talk) 11:40, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
We may not have articles on all 7000 plus artists. If we are going to create lists there should probably be a few lists not one giant list.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:25, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

  • When I proposed a list, I meant just for the people with Wikipedia articles, essentially replicating the category. Mclay1 (talk) 12:10, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
I am very skeptical that only 37 of the 7000+ artists whose work is in the collection of the mentioned Smithsonian museum have Wikipedia articles. I suspect it runs into the hundreds if not over 1000.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:34, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
If people want a fuller list of artists in the Smithsonian American Art Museum we could ask Jane023 nicely; she does lots of work on artists' data on Wikidata and created most of the pages in Category:Lists of artists by museum – some examples are List of painters in the Art Institute of Chicago, Catalogue of paintings in the National Gallery and List of artists in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide. Personally, I think it's better when such pages are lists of artworks, as with the National Gallery example, rather than of artists followed by the number of works for each artist, because in some cases the number might change. However, that might be unreasonable if there are more than 7,000 artists. Ham II (talk) 07:05, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
Satisfying WP:NLIST can be challenging and I didn't want to through that on the CFD closing backlog, since we're already having trouble keeping up. I did copy all the current category contents right here so no work is lost if anyone wants to create that article and I also reached out to Jane023. RevelationDirect (talk) 22:24, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
She ran a Wikidata query which returned over 2500 names of artists with paintings in the SAAM collection. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:45, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
Here's the discussion. Interesting to see some non-American ones in the query: Richard Wilson, Joseph Vernet (actually, the only painting in the collection under his name is an American copy after one of his), Joshua Reynolds (all prints after him), George Romney. The Vernet and Reynolds results, with no actual works by them, suggest that the data isn't 100% reliable. How badly does the one person in who's !voted for listifying want that list? Ham II (talk) 10:25, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment I really think we should let this category be deleted. If people want to build up some sort of article structure for those 2500+ articles they can do that, but we would be best off letting that be built up in a useful way over whatever time it takes but not keep this non-defining Category in existence for however long that process might take.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:37, 10 February 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Upmerge underpopulated category. By definition, everything that happened in a former country is history, so I don't see how this is any different to its parent, Category:LGBTQ by former country. Mclay1 (talk) 05:18, 2 February 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: This was tagged for a speedy rename by @Go D. Usopp:, with the move performed by bot. I understand why based on the current description, but I think this makes the category too broad. I originally intended the category for characters created by Cartoon Network Studios, which I think works much better as a reasonably defined category. (Oinkers42) (talk) 06:09, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
Comment I see no reason to separate non-CNS series that aired and are advertised together with CNS series, such as Courage the Cowardly Dog and Ed, Edd n Eddy when they're closely tied together with the network. Go D. Usopp (talk) 06:27, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename per nom. See also: Category:Television characters by studio. We should not be categorising shows (or elements of shows, like characters), by television network. - jc37 21:47, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
The Cartoon Network, Inc. is the main article in this context, with trade name being Cartoon Network. Go D. Usopp (talk) 05:12, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

  • Merge Category:People of Michigan in the American Revolution to Category:Province of Quebec (1763-1791) people
  • Nominator's rationale This category is anachronistic to the core. Michigan starts with the creation of Michigan Territory in 1805. It does not exist as a concept or political unit during the American Revolutionary War. It is officially ceded to the United States in 1783, but most of the area is still run by Native Americans who are not party to the Treaty. However for reasons I cannot fully explain the British and those who do recognize their power in what is today Michigan also ignore the Treaty of 1783. It is not until the Battle of Fallen Timbers breaks the Native American military power in 1795 and the Jay Treaty of 1796 that the British withdraw from Detroit and St. Ignace turning them over to the Americans and an American presence begans to emerge in Michigan. We have 2 articles here, and since they are both people who were under British authority, the articles belong in the Province of Quebec category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 05:04, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete or merge, not a defining characteristic. It concerns two articles about people shortly imprisoned by the British suspected of American symphathies. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:33, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

  • Nominator's rationale The Ethiopia and Australia categories have 1 article each and each are the only articles in the by continent category so upmerging to the general one is justified. The North America one has the US sub-cat with 17 articles, but nothing else so placing it directly in 1974 murders instead if having the by continent sub-cat seems the easiest way to facilitate navigation between articles.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:49, 11 January 2026 (UTC)
  • The first line of this nomination will empty Category:1974 murders in Africa and Category:1974 crimes in Ethiopia, and their parent Category:1974 crimes in Africa. Likewise Category:1974 murders in Oceania. Those have no other content, so that's fair enough, but I'm linking to them in this nomination to enable tracing of why they will be deleted. Merge also to Category:1974 in Ethiopia, Category:1974 crimes in Australia & Category:1974 crimes in Oceania, respectively, because the nominator has given no rationale for removing the contents from those hierarchies. Oppose merging the North America category to Category:1974 murders as (i) the only content to be moved is the US category, which is already in that target via the "by country" subcat; (ii) it's part of a complete series for North America. – Fayenatic London 16:59, 17 January 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: withdrawn. (non-admin closure) GoldRomean (talk) 01:09, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Manual merge where not already otherwise within the target hierarchy. "Spymaster" redirects to List of spymasters which says "A spymaster is a leader of a group of spies or an intelligence agency." If that's really broader than the nominated target, then the target Directors should become a sub-cat, and the contents of Spymasters should be purged of any articles already within Directors. – Fayenatic London 23:03, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

  • If I understand the nomination correctly, the proposal is simply that some articles in Category:Spymasters should be moved to the subcategory Category:Directors of intelligence agencies where appropriate. If that is the case, I support that (and I'm not sure why it needs discussing). I think some other commenters here are under the impression the proposal is to merge the whole category. If I'm wrong, then I'm confused. Mclay1 (talk) 05:50, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
  • That was my proposal, but I withdraw it in the light of the valid objection by John Pack Lambert. I see that you have now made the Directors a subcat of Spymasters. I have removed 21 individual directors from Spymasters, so the necessary purging is now complete. I also added Category:Station chiefs as another subcat. – Fayenatic London 22:57, 2 February 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Correct category created at "Surinder Films films." Redirect serves no purpose as it is not typical naming convention. We don't keep redirects like this for other film production companies (e.g., Category:AA Films does not exist for Category:AA Films films). CNMall41 (talk) 23:02, 3 January 2026 (UTC)

  • Nominator's rationale outside the physician sub-cat, Category:19th-century Bulgarian scientists has 5 articles spread across 4 categories. This is excessive and makes navigation very hard. By upmerging these articles we will make it easier to navigate between articles. The 1 physicists here in already in 20th-century Bulgarian physicists.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:55, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
