Category:Draft articles by ORES topic classification

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:08, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: "ORES" was never explained on the page, but apparently referred to "Objective Revision Evaluation Service", see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/ORES#Topic_routing . In mainspace, ORES currently redirects to Artificial intelligence in Wikimedia projects, but the last mention of ORES there was removed in Dec 2025 stating that it's deprecated. Rename and populate with other topic subcats from parent Category:Draft articles. – Fayenatic London 16:51, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
This is a container category where all subcats are automatically populated by MediaWiki:AFC-submit-wizard.js based on ORES predictions. – SD0001 (talk) 17:39, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep these subcats (populated as SD0001 describes) are meaningfully different from the ones populated manually. And given that the script still makes calls to the API https://ores.wikimedia.org to get this data the current name is correct. * Pppery * it has begun... 07:01, 22 February 2026 (UTC)

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, GoldRomean (talk) 21:15, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename per nom. I don't think it matters whether the draft categories have been populated manually, by a template or by some automated system. There's no reason to stop editors from manually categorising their drafts within the ORES subcategories, because they have normal topic names, and we don't need duplicate categories for automatic vs manual category assignment. We should simply have various draft categories for different topics, and if there is an automated system, it can pick one of those. I'm also highly sceptical of any use of AI on Wikipedia. Mclay1 (talk) 05:53, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename per Mclay1. Automated and manual classification can sit side by side leading to the same categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:18, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

Category:Aromanian people in Serbia

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename (non-admin closure). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:10, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: To restore the status quo altered by this CfD . Nominator Johnpacklambert claimed This is not a grouping of people by where their ancestors came from, but a grouping of people by their ethnicity. However that is precisely what the categories were and still are about: people of Aromanian ancestry, full or partial, are included in these categories. Nominator claimed but by and large these are people who are Aromanian by ethnicity., but the Serbian one for instance features three times more people of partial Aromanian descent than of full one. Under the previous names, this scheme caused no issues, but the current names imply a fully Aromanian ethnic background for all the individuals listed in the categories. Immediately after the rename, two different editors removed the renamed categories from the articles of individuals who were only of partial Aromanian descent . The latter case erupted into a user dispute . The Aromanians are an ethnic group in the Balkans, the Balkan topic area being a sensitive one. These disputes are completely unnecessary and avoidable.
I am not opposed in essence to the existence of two sets of categories: a "people in" for people of full Aromanian ancestry and a "descent" one for people of partial Aromanian ancestry. The nominator too recognized this: There might be potential for a few cases of people who did identify as being of this descent but not of this ethnicity being in a seperate category scheme. However they have straight-up refused to create a second set of categories and deal with the hassle they've created . This is direct WP:Disruptive editing, and I don't see how it is fair that other users deal with it.
We can revisit the issue of creating two separate sets of categories in the future. But this nomination intends to revert a problem created by a user firstly unaware of the scope of the categories, and secondly unwilling to deal with the problem they have caused. Please recognize that the nature of this problem goes beyond content. The categories should be renamed to their former, broader and less controversial names. Logically, any future WP:DIFFUSING will be easier from a broader category to a more specific one, than from a more specific one that has lost some listed articles amid accuracy issues. Super Ψ Dro 16:04, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Split the categories. However we need to ensure with the descent categories A. We are limiting them to those who were nationals or permanent residents of the country. For example people living in Bohemia in 1850 of German descent are not Czech people of German descent. B. We need to ensure that those placed in the descent category are cases that are reliably sourced and that the listed ancestry is actually defining. The demand that a nominator create a whole skew of catrgories, especially when A. He has injured his back and spent several hours in the hospital and B. Is in the midst of splitting up a category at specific request that involves sorting over 200 articles into very long named categories that it takes a lot of thought to decide which or the two or both to put the articles in, comes off as very rude. I informed this other editor of this issue and he just attacked me for evidently being at fault for making a nomination I was not prepared to fully implement on my own. The way I was treated was very ride and jnconsiderate. Editors need to be more respectful in the way they communicate with others.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:45, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
The fact is that your actions caused disruption and two disputes in under 24 hours. That's how it is. I did say I was open to wait amid your situation. However you said you were directly unwilling to tackle the problem, so your personal conditions would not be a factor. If you said that under distress and were willing to deal with this case later, I couldn't know that, so I simply acted to have the renames reverted.
Wishing you good health and a fast recovery. Regards, Super Ψ Dro 01:14, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
  • I support the idea and share the nominator's rationale. — Sadko (words are wind) 17:19, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Support nominator rationale, the new categories only made more confusion than it actually solved anything. Theonewithreason (talk) 17:42, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Split, e.g. Constantin Belimace properly belongs in the categories as they are currently named. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:03, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
Just to emphazise again: I am not opposed to a split. But we're talking about something like 200 articles. And they all need individual reading to determine if ancestry is full or partial. In the case, which seems to be, that there is nobody willing to enforce this split or they lack the time, it'll be much easier to do it, slowly and article by article and avoiding disruption in other articles meanwhile, once the categories are renamed back to the broader title. Super Ψ Dro 01:14, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
    • No it will be easier to do it with a clear CfD mandate in support of doing so. Which is what would be created by a decision to create the split.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:28, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename per nom and status quo ante. The old category names are a better descriptor for these people, as they do not imply a degree to which their identification or ancestry is partially or fully Aromanian. They only imply that Aromanian heritage is defining for them per reliable sources. Splitting categories would mean that we differentiate pure-bred and half-bred people, which is practically and ethically wrong. However, the categories should be purged of people for whom Aromanian descent is not defining according to reliable sources, per WP:EGRS. Place Clichy (talk) 12:13, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment 2 of the 5 articles currently in Category:Aromanians in Bulgaria are on people lived their entire lived in the Ottoman Empire. I am not convinced they belong in this category under either name. We do not have Category:African-American peiple of Irish deacent or any similar category. All the descent categories we have are for people in cases where it can be seen and seems to in general be interpreted nationals of a country of such a descent. For example Category:American people of French descent or Category:Australian people of German deacent. I do not think we want to use these categories to categorize people who identified with one what is essentially an ethnic group but had ancestry in another.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:18, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
But these categories are used for ethnic groups. Place Clichy (talk) 02:43, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
In the case of these Fooian people of Booian descent Fooian I believe means the country that the person is a national or permanent resident of. Otherwise we would have to determine which of multiple ethnicities a person identifies with is his primary one and which is his secondary one. If we have a subject of the Ottoman Empire who idenfied as both Bulgarian and Aromanian I do not think we should try to parse which is more important to that person. If we are going to try to do that we would need to also have Category:Aromanian people of Bulgarian descent. John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:13, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
These categories discuss Fooian people of Aromanian descent, which is I believe a good way to characterize people who have that heritage, when justified. I don't think someone suggests Aromanian people of Fooian descent. Place Clichy (talk) 20:14, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
Some of these people in these categories are for example residents of the Ottoman Empire who identified as being both Bulgarian and Aromanian. It appears that the only reason we prefer one of these identities over the other in categorization is because later events lead to the creation of a distinct country of Bulgaria but did not lead to a distinct country of Aromania. At best this is anachronistic imposing a modern understanding on categorization of people in the past. I do not think the way the categories are being applied in these cases is justifiable or makes any sense.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:58, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
First off, that doesn't make sense: "Bulgarian descent" would/should likewise refer to ethnicity, regardless of whether a nation-state emerged from it. Second: multiple descents should result in multiple categories, in the same article. From a vague recollection I have regarding Vladimir Cavarnali, whom RSes describe as both Bulgarian and Gagauz, it was some users stealthly intervening in articles who kept suggesting, against valid sources and decades of consensus, that we absolutely must have only one descent category per article; this may be the only reason why Bulgarian-Aromanian Ottomans are sometimes classified just as Bulgarians. A non-issue if I ever saw one. Dahn (talk) 13:37, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

  • Answering to the relisting comment: oppose split. I am not as opposed if someone takes the time to split the categories in the around 200 affected biographies. Which require case-to-case reading. So far no editor has declared willingness to do the split. Furthermore, we would be ending with some sparsely populated categories in some cases. Why bother? Previous status quo was comfortable. Super Ψ Dro 21:23, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Support rename, oppose split -- I see no reason to ever again distinguish between (full) ethnicity and descent, as the very exercise is absurd, implicitly POV. All people whose X descent was noted in RSes are of notable X descent, and any distinction between the degree to which they are more X than a "full-blooded" or "self-identified" X is something that readers can dissect in their own minds, with their own subjective criteria, rather than making this entire project a victim to their whims, and rather than creating an endless back and forth. I came to note this dispute after adding the category on Jean Constantin, which article is incidentally educational as regards the absurdities imposed on us: Jean was widely perceived as a Rom, and described himself as Greek, but in one instance clearly indicated that his father was Aromanian; am I to exclude him from a valid category, based on his own statement, just because he was not "as" Aromanian as Gheorghe Hagi? Am I to accept as legally binding that some other user proclaimed we "must" either only have the category for the Hagis, and at most include the Jeans in a "lesser" category? All this when having both in the same category neatly addresses all definitions! Dahn (talk) 13:17, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Support rename to restore status quo ante as this was an ill-thought initiative in the first place. I don't really see the interest in a split. Of course if a more precise scope is identified nothing prevents a user to create a new category and populate it with care. However the key defining characteristic behind this category is Aromanian heritage regardless of its nature, and that was overlooked by the nominator of the original renaming in favour of other general considerations not adapted to the specifics of these categories. Place Clichy (talk) 16:43, 3 March 2026 (UTC)

Consensus is clear. For how much longer should this discussion still be left open? We benefit from restoring the status quo as soon as possible. Super Ψ Dro 00:16, 18 March 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: rename, these are mostly set categories about Industries (economics) rather than topic categories about Industry (manufacturing). I disagree with your claims about Sandé and broad, unsupported statements like "generally regarded by everybody as Scottish" are not helpful. AusLondonder (talk) 08:53, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
Re generally regarded by everybody as Scottish in this edit you placed her in Category:English people of Zambian descent and 5 other English categories, as well as 7 British categories. Place Clichy (talk) 23:52, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
That is ridiculous over-categorisation. AusLondonder (talk) 08:31, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
Not really. Regardless of the merits of this category, people can be both English and Scottish. Mclay1 (talk) 05:46, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
When they were different countries, maybe. But when someone of mixed English and Scottish background is called British, English, and Scottish at the same time, we may call them just British. I don't think it is offensive for anyone to do that. Place Clichy (talk) 19:18, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
But it's also unnecessarily imprecise. England and Scotland are more like countries than regions. If someone was both French and German, we wouldn't just categorise them under European for the sake of using fewer categories. Adding more categories to an article helps navigation. But again, that's a general comment rather than a specific comment on this case. Mclay1 (talk) 06:27, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
British is a nationality, while European is not. The article gives the example of someone born in England of one English parent, who moved to Scotland at an early age (four). [BTW calling her mother English is not supported by RS, as the given sources only mention her birth date.] Although the English, Scottish and Welsh identities are important, and like all national identities can describe people not born in or descending from these places, moving within the same country does not reflect the same king of national identity change as international migration or naturalization. Moving within the same country is trivial. That's a general comment as well, but I think there are strong arguments to call such people just British, especially for descent categories. Place Clichy (talk) 07:18, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
    • Agree with Place Clichy on this point. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:23, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
  • I would suggest to replace all "Scottish" and "English" category links in the article by "British". That would empty the nominated category. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:46, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete the one article in here is already in Category:British people of Zambian deacent. She was born in England so her placement it the Scottish Category seems irregular. We should avoid too narrow categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 05:46, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Eponymous category for a small town of less than 500 people containing only the main article and an article about a historic church, already linked in the main article. Better categorised within the parent. AusLondonder (talk) 07:49, 23 February 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: Rename * Pppery * it has begun... 19:43, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: To match the article, renamed today to Herberton. AusLondonder (talk) 07:42, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Presumably the article rename was incorrect because all articles about populated places in Queensland contain ", Queensland" in the title. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:59, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
@Marcocapelle: If you look at Category:Wikipedia categories named after populated places in Queensland a decent proportion don't contain the state in the title. It appears many were created with this unnecessary pre-emptive disambiguation, although for many other places the disambiguation is necessary. AusLondonder (talk) 17:31, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Ok, it is almost all instead of all. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:43, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename. I don't know why some editors choose to add the state name to every place even when disambiguation is unneeded. Possibly they're copying the way American places are named, but people in other countries such as Australia don't tend to refer to places that way in speech or writing unless needed for clarity. Nominator's rationale: containerize per WP:OCASSOC, it is not a defining characteristic of the articles directly in this category. Monks on Mount Athos are already in a subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:03, 7 February 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Unneeded double-up of chronological periods of soccer in Australia. They aren't generally meant to be sorted by calendar year, and rather by season (Category:Soccer in Australia by season) and proved for all countries (e.g. all in Category:Association football by country and season). Nominator's rationale: As per usual, many of these categories have been created to contain a single article. All of the Cypriot categories, for example, are for one person. This is obviously over-categorisation. AusLondonder (talk) 00:46, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
