Nominator's rationale: Empty category that's misusing Wikipedia process. It's tagged with the {{Possibly empty category}} template to stave off deletion, but that template is only meant for use on project and maintenance categories that are needed on an ongoing basis but might be empty sometimes (such as temporary error-tracker categories that are transcluded by maintenance templates) to prevent a continual delete-recreate-redelete-rerecreate cycle -- it is not meant to exempt mainspace content categories from regular mainspace content category rules, because it could just be casually applied to any mainspace category and thereby render those rules completely meaningless and unenforceable.
So this is a category that should be consistently populated in order to exist, and editors can simply use the Category:Scheduled sports events parent if there aren't enough articles about future water polo competitions to keep this from ever being empty. Bearcat (talk) 14:13, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

Categories are supposed to be based on things that are agreed too widely. Category:Sea captains from New York (state)

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:American sea captains and Category:Sailors from New York (state). This discussion began with a rename+rescope proposal. That was rendered moot when the rename target was created as a new category, which leaves whether there should be a dual upmerge. Three editors argued that there are not enough captains to diffuse by state, one editor argued that we could. There isn't really any policy or guideline weighting that can occur here, so I see consensus in favor of the proposal which attracted three supports. Sea captains alone is very specific since few ever become one, let alone notable ones, but sailor is a broader term and a "by state" category can be made for that.   • Oppose a sea captain is an executive position which is distinct from someone being a sailor. The by state categorization should be expanded as there are almost 150 articles in that category.     • We use sailor to mean anyone who made their occupation on a ship, we do not generally in categories distinguish between executive and lower employees. 150 articles is way too few to split by state.       Yes, we do distinguish between executives and lower level employees. We have the whole category of Category:Leaders. We have Category:Fire chiefs and Category:Firefighters.       I get what you mean but none of those examples are the same as a sea captain which isn't an executive role. In these cases, it means a sailor in charge of a sea going vessel.     A sea captain is a sailor who holds command of a seafaring vessel. E.g. the captain of a cargo ship or a passenger liner in the merchant navy. You can argue it is also a dual executive role too but, in the end, they are still sailors.   • Category:Sea captains is a subcategory of Category:Sailors, Category:American sea captains is a subcategory of Category:American sailors so that, if merged "sailors" is an obvious merge target. I guess the discussion is more about size, whether 150 articles is worthwhile to split by state. I do not know the answer to that. If there are only a few sea-bordering states who deliver the vast majority of captains it makes sense to diffuse, but if captains come from all over the United States then less so.     In states where the primary occupation was maritime, we will have enough for sea captains. For example, the existing New York category already has 7 articles. There would be 47 articles in Category:Sea captains from Massachusetts if we create it. There would be 24 articles in Category:Sea captains from Maine if we create it. There would be 14 articles in Category:Sea captains from Connecticut if we create it. So there's no reason to delete, because at the very least upmerge back to the decade cat. But now these year cats are filled.
