    • Exactly. For some career military personnel this could get to a lot of duplicate categories. This is not the way we want to go.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:07, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
Respectfully disagree Boo Boo (talk) 00:46, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
For the bulk of the regiments in the American Civil War, there were few career soldiers. Most returned to civilian life when the war was over. It is interesting how many, especially in the U.S. Volunteer army were movers and shakers in later life in a wide variety of fields. That is why I think it is a worthwhile category. Convert Category:Jones family (Glamorgan Shipping Magnates) to article Jones family (Glamorgan Shipping Magnates)
Nominator's rationale: This seems more like something that should be an article rather the a category. SMasonGarrison 00:03, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Do not Convert Category:Jones family (Glamorgan Shipping Magnates) to article Jones family (Glamorgan Shipping Magnates): Whereas there are multiple sources for the notability of each of the individual people in the category, there is only one short source for their shipping company M. Jones and Brothers. Yet that source of this family's wealth needs to appear in brackets in the category's name, to distinguish them from other Glamorgan families who have the surname Jones (which is a common surname in Wales). Nominator's rationale: here belongs not only Roman Catholic bishops, but also Coptic Catholic, Maronite and members of other Catholic Churches sui iuris Noel baran (talk) 16:49, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
Oppose. No reason given why the scope of the articl should be expanded. Parallel categories for other catholic churches can be created if wanted (and numerous enough), but this one is part of Category:Roman Catholic bishops and evidentluy more than large enough to reman separate. Fram (talk) 09:43, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
It should be transferred to category Category:Catholic bishops, because pesons can be accepted into the Roman (Latin) Catholic orders, but them retain their rite. Parallel categories for other Catholic Churches not the case, because sometimes it will be one or two people. And the solution I have proposed will avoid inaccuracy. And it's strange that you wrote that no reason was given, when I explained it clearly. Noel baran (talk) 08:22, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
No, that was (and still isn't) clear. That non-Roman Catholic bishops may perhaps also belong to religious orders doesn't in any way invalidate the Roman Catholic bishop category or make it trivial. All it means is that a parent cat of Catholic bishops by religious order may be useful, where the Catholic but non-Roman Catholic bishops can be included. A nom should explain why this cat is unwanted, not why other articles could belong in similar cats as well. We don't apply the same reasoning to, say, Category:British politicians by occupation, claiming it is trivial or needs to be expanded because there are also non-British politicians with those occupations (or British non-politicians with these occupations, or British politicians with other occupations).
The current cats are well-populated and relevant (the religious order of religious bosses is a logical, pertinent division). you claim "the solution I have proposed will avoid inaccuracy. " but you haven't indicated any inaccuracy. if there are people in the categories who aren't Roman Catholic bishops or not from that otder, then they should be removed from that cat, just like we do with every cat. But the two aspects of the category are well defined and don't lead to inaccuracies.
"pesons can be accepted into the Roman (Latin) Catholic orders, but them retain their rite." But then they won't be Roman Catholic bishops of course. The category is for "Roman Catholic bishops" (characteristic number one) by "religious order" (characteristic number two), and you are arguing about "non-Roman Catholic bishops" (different characteristic number 1" by "Roman Catholic religious order", which is simply not the same thing.
Again, nothing stops you or anyone else from creating e.g. "Maronite bishops by religious order", assuming there are enough of them to make such a tree worthwhile. But the existence or non-existence of that cat does not make this one any more or less accurate or acceptable. Fram (talk) 08:45, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for your extensive explanation. You are right that the category is correct for Roman Catholic bishops, members of religious orders. I don't see any other practical solution yet, but thank you for crystallizing it. Noel baran (talk) 09:01, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
  • If all Catholic religious orders are open to members of all Catholic autonomous churches then you could argue that this is a trivial intersection, but I do not know if this condition is met. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:51, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Cluster of by-year categories, created scattershot for just one or two films each. Per longstanding consensus (see also Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2021_June_14#LGBT-related_films_by_year), LGBTQ-related films are subcatted by individual year only from 1960 on, but by decade for the 1950s and before, because the number of notable LGBTQ-related films produced before 1960 just wasn't sufficient to warrant by-year categories.
From 1960 on, there's not a single year whose category has less than five films in it, and not a single year where a category has had to be skipped due to the total lack of even one film to file in it -- but before 1960, there were some years when no notable LGBTQ-related films were released at all, and some years where there were only one or two films to file in a by-year category. But this isn't a tree where small categories or completely skipped years would be valuable -- it's a tree where no by-year categories should exist unless the entire decade can be justifiably split into by-year categories with no skips and no small categories.
Even the LGBTQ-related film lists are only handled by year from 1960 on, and by decade prior to the 1960s, precisely because for most years prior to 1960 a year-specific list would be either too small to stand alone, or would not exist at all due to there being no films to list.
So there's no value in scattershotting by-year categories with skipped years here: any year whose LGBTQ-related films are listed in a subsection of a by-decade list instead of a standalone by-year list should also be categorized by decade instead of by year, because small categories and completely-skipped years aren't useful here and don't aid navigation. Bearcat (talk) 15:12, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Author: It's true that by the time this discussion was created, there were fewer movies in each category. However, in some cases that has changed now. For example, theres 7 articles in Category:1933 LGBTQ-related films and 4 articles in Category:1929 LGBTQ-related films. I agree some of the categories have fewer articles than what I anticipated and they can be merged.

I don't know enough about the topic to know if the city subcategory is needed. A cursory glance at the contents shows that they are based in the city. RevelationDirect created the category so I'll defer to them. Also, I didn't get a notification for this ping, so the others might not have either. I'm respectfully opposed. I appreciate Johnpacklambert's perspective that all of these stations broadcast beyond city lines and I would generally start with the metro category and diffuse as needed, including to potentially county cats. But for large trees like this, the metro/city pairing are both defining which is why we also categorize newpspapers and companies in general based on the city of their main office even though they do business in a wider area. Nominator's rationale: Redundant category Mvcg66b3r (talk) 03:36, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose. How is it redundant? No clear rationale has been given. The places in Greater Austin are not all in Austin so the direction of this merge doesn't make sense. Mclay1 (talk) 09:20, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Background: We use headers in categories sometimes to help clarify the contents but in this topic area they often contradict the actual article title; see the top of Category:Radio stations in Pittsburgh for one I haven't gotten to yet. That just doesn't follow current WP:CATNAME best practices. To fix that, I've been clearing similar headers and creating clearly named metro level parent categories. - RevelationDirect (talk) 14:39, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose Readers will more intuitively understand where to find suburban stations following the pre-existing city/metro parent categories trees we use for countless other topics. - RevelationDirect (talk) 14:39, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Reverse merge being in Greater Austin is defining. The exact Municipality of location is not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:06, 9 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Propose Deleting Category:Environmental law schools
Nominator's rationale: WP:NONDEFINING
We have a number of law schools that offer environmental law classes, law clinics, or clubs. But schools like Yale Law School and UCLA School of Law also have many other areas of study so this isn't defining to the whole institution. This seems akin to a category for undergrad colleges that offer a French major. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:02, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom. We do not categorize schools by one of the many programs they offer. None of these are described as being "Environmental law schools". Οἶδα (talk) 02:49, 6 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Propose Deleting Category:IEEE Student Branch
Nominator's rationale: Per the spirit of WP:C1, an empty category
We don't have a single article about a student branch of the IEEE. Rather, the only article here is Pensacola Christian College, which has a variety of student organizations and activities including this engineering club. Categorizing whole colleges by each group on campus is not defining and I don't think individual student branches are notable enough for stand-alone articles. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:02, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
