The result of the discussion was: merge single-article categories for now, with no prejudice to recreation if populated. (non-admin closure) GoldRomean (talk) 20:45, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry. LibStar (talk) 22:07, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge 1 article categories make navigation harder.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:17, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:50, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep, Icelandic one now has 3 articles. As always, please try to populate categories before nominating them for being underpopulated. Fram (talk) 11:21, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
That is the duty of the category creator. AusLondonder (talk) 12:28, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
... and of a nominator. There is no reason that the spirit of wp:before and wp:preserve shouldn´t apply to cfd nominators as well. Fram (talk) 14:04, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
Nope. WP:BEFORE is a subsection of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Community expectations have been clear for a while that creators should populate categories that they create. AusLondonder (talk) 14:55, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
I'm not saying that creators shouldn't populate categories, just like article creators should write more than unsourced microstubs. Even then whoever wants to delete it is expected to make an effort as well. I know that WP:BEFORE is a part of AfD, that's why I said "the spirit", otherwise I would just have said "the letter". Deleting categories when the deletion reason is "just one cat" but the cat can easily be populated further, is not productive. Voting "Merge Single-article categories " without indicating what should be done with the non-single-article one or ones isn't really helpful either. Fram (talk) 15:38, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge Single-article categories do not assist in navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 12:28, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep. Per WP:NARROWCAT, Category:Blind people is large enough to be diffused. I find it hard to believe that there is only one blind person in the UAE. Place Clichy (talk) 16:24, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
Can you find other notable blind people from UAE? LibStar (talk) 02:56, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment I do not think we should keep any 1 article categories. If people believe there are more notable people who fit the criteria, they are free to find or create those articles. I do not think we should keep 1 article categories that actively hinder navigation just because people argue "there should be more articles here". People are free to create or place more articles in the categories, but I do not think we should preserve these 1 article categories just on the hope that it will eventually happen. That is exactly why we went to the narrow category guidelines because the old guidelines lead to people being able to claim "there will eventually be more articles here" and keep them even though often we never ended up with articles there at all.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:47, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment Keeping these as 1 articles categories is also a major BLP issue. If we determine that the articles have been incorrectly placed here without any sourcing that supports them it becomes much harder to remove them. I have seen this happen with the intersection of other disabilities and nationality. Because of BLP concerns I really thing we should have a very strong rule that no category that intersects nationality and disability should be allowed below a minimum threshold to avoid BLP issues. I think the threshold should be no lower than 4 articles.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:52, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment I have crossed out Icelandic blind people, my nomination still holds for the others. LibStar (talk) 02:57, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
    • I am OK with that for now. I am less than convinced that 3 articles is really enough for a category, but if we can convince people to at least support upmerging the categories with 1 or 2 articles for now it is better than no merging. I would also note that my view is that we are merging based on current categories. If we get more articles on more people who are blind and nationals of the countries involved, or if some people who are blind who have current articles become nationals of the countries involved, or some people who have current articles who are nationals of these countries become blind and we can show that it is a defining enough trait to categorize them by (if someone was a runner 30 years ago, and has not competed in such for that long, and just recently developed blindness, but is not really still a public figure, I am not sure they would properly go in the blind category. If they were a runner and now are a sports figure, politician, notable business leader, journalist or online influencer, then yes, but if they are a retired person out of the public eye I would want clear indication first). This is about making Wikipedia as it exists now easy to navigate. If we get more articles we will create more categories as needed. Likewise, if we loose some articles we have now we would need to reevaluate and consider if the categories in the past made sense still do.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:40, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Delete and manually merge to appropriate categories in Category:Shipwrecked people. Contains almost entirely articles of people on the ship the day it was sunk. Omnis Scientia (talk) 12:03, 12 March 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: split. (non-admin closure) GoldRomean (talk) 17:31, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: A weird WP:OVERLAPCAT that should be broken apart. Category:Animated films set in Oregon has just enough entries to become a full category in line with Category:Animated films set in the United States by state or territory, but the television shows do not have enough. Single-article, non-defining and non-resident ambassador categories

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). GoldRomean (talk) 17:25, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: All of these non-defining categories for non-resident ambassadors contain only a single article and aren't useful for navigation. AusLondonder (talk) 13:59, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete as non-defining.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:36, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete, non-resident ambassadors should not be categorized as such. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:43, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete all per nom. LibStar (talk) 00:20, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Triple merge to parent categories e.g. Category:Ambassadors of Ethiopia, Category:Ambassadors to Argentina and Category:Argentina–Ethiopia relations. Guideline WP:NARROWCAT suggests that merge to parent categories should be the default action. Not all small-populated categories are useful, but raw deletion as suggested would remove legitimate parent categories, especially bilateral relations, as even non-resident ambassadors do benefit from official accreditation between governments. However, emptying bilateral relations categories may be the actual purpose of this series of nominations. Place Clichy (talk) 18:14, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
Strongly oppose a merge as proposed. It would be completely inappropriate to add the biography of Sinknesh Ejigu as the only article in Category:Argentina–Ethiopia relations. Please see WP:CATDEF and also please stop suggesting my nominations, which have attracted support here, are for some improper purpose. AusLondonder (talk) 20:14, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
      • I second those strong Oppose. A category on international relations where the only article is on an ambassador who the sending country did not feel it was important enough to accredit to that country as the main assignment is not worth putting as a category. We need to stop using categories as a backhanded way to cover subjects. The way we cover the subject of Argentina-Ethiopia relations would be through an article with reliable sources, not by creating a category with articles that say nothing substantial on the matter. Categories exist to group articles for navigation. If we do not have a group of articles we should find ways to broaden the subject so we have multiple articles that actually relate to the subject.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:36, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: Even if Smoke Fairies don't refer to this as a studio album, as noted in the article in this category, there is no need to make a separate category for one release. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 06:16, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: C2C per Category:Coups d'état and Category:Coups d'état by country. Charles Essie (talk) 03:16, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename also per article title Coup d'état. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:55, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

  • Rename. It is probably extremely rare that a coup does not rely on the military, or a paramilitary of some kind. Strange enough, the article name differs from the French spelling of coup d'État with a capital É. Place Clichy (talk) 18:23, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

  • Propose Deleting Category:Iowa Women's Hall of Fame Inductees
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCAWARD and WP:NONDEFINING
The Iowa Women's Hall of Fame was an annual award by Iowa Commission on the Status of Women. The articles in this category are about evenly split between those that mention the award in passing and those that don't mention it at all so it's not treated as generally defining. The contents of the category are already listed in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:00, 25 March 2026 (UTC)

  • Propose Deleting Category:West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inductees
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCAWARD and WP:NONDEFINING
The West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame is an annual awards dinner hosted by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. This category suffers the same catch-22 as many local sports awards: it might be defining for the many local winners without a Wikipedia article but, by the time you become notable, it's no longer defining. Indeed, most the articles in this category don't even mention this award. The contents of the category are already listed in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:00, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
