"Somalian" to "Somali" across the board

The result of the discussion was: rename to "Somali". Editors felt that the shorter name is more common. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 21:55, 16 July 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: 'Somali' is the preferred demonym for both the diaspora and the residents. See Somalis and Somalia - both have the line, "Somalis overwhelmingly prefer the demonym Somali over the incorrect Somalian since the former is an endonym, while the latter is an exonym with double suffixes".

I know this has been discussed in the past with a small number of people weighing in each time, mostly in 2016 or earlier. The justification to keep "Somalian" has usually been that it reserves the use of 'Somali' for ethnicity, using "Somalian" as the term for affiliation with the Republic of Somalia. But that's still not the demonym used by most people in/from Somalia or by most scholars (Google Scholar search for "Somali" turns up 489,000 results; "Somalian" has 28,500). "Ethnic Somalis" is already its own category and can stay such. In other cases where there is a large diasporic population, that works. Like with Category:Armenian people and Category:Ethnic Armenians, we can just add a hatnote at the top of each category to clarify which category refers to which group.

Regularly in the past 10 years, discussions have come up with a consensus to rename an individual subcategory, but because it isn't the name of the parent category, it gets undone; for example, Category:Somalian Emigrants becoming Category:Somali Emigrants in 2019 got mass consensus, but then a speedy CFD in 2023 moved the category back to "Somalian".

I've put this in three batches: one for the bulk of the categories, one for the diaspora categories, and one for categories that are more explicitly about location of residence or involvement with the government. It feels like the diaspora categories are the most obvious case to switch to Somali, as being part of the diaspora is more of an ethnic identity than a national one. I would prefer to switch everything.

Feels like it's time to reopen the discussion, and to do so with all the categories I can find, as we haven't done in a very long time. Here's hoping MassCFD works properly with this much. ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 17:26, 10 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Question: is 'Somali' the preferred demonym not only for the 85% Somali-speaking people in Somalia but also for the 15% other ethnicities? Marcocapelle (talk) 18:37, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
I haven't been able to find any evidence that Somalian is preferred by any group in Somalia, except claims by individuals and British Somaliland advocates. Have you seen any evidence of the term 'Somalian' being an appropriate one for nationals? It's generally preferred in English-language style guides to use 'Somali' for both. Just about every country that is some amount a nation-state uses the same term for being a citizen vs. an ethnic descendant of the group that is its namesake. Some uses in English and such:
Do you have evidence to the contrary? Every discussion I've seen that says "Somalian" is appropriate when referencing non-ethnic nationals is fraught with uncertainty and opposition. Essentially, I argue that the fact that Somali is a word that means two things doesn't justify using "Somalian," a term for which I can't find evidence of appropriateness. We don't use that to invent different words to distinguish Ethnic vs. National members other major diasporas, e.g. Armenian, Irish, Italian people - we instead use a disambiguator when referring to the ethnicity. At minimum, would it not be appropriate to move "Somalian diaspora" and its tree to "Somali diaspora" under "Ethnic Somali people" and rename? The diaspora is defined by the ethnic group more than the nationality.
Alternate proposal 1: Rename from "Somalian people" to "Somali nationals" or from, e.g., "Somali journalists" to "journalists from Somalia" when possible
Alternate proposal 2: Just move the categories that are explicitly about the diaspora into the overarching "Ethnic Somali people" category and rename them. ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 20:42, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose I think this is a case where Somali means people who are Somali by ethnicity regardless of country. Somalian means nationals of Somalia. With about a third of the population of Ethiopia being Somali I think we need to have two separate Category trees. I do not think we should Rename all Somalian categories to Somali.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:09, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
Support for rename: From what I've seen, most of the terms listed above refer to the Somali ethnic group, not to citizens of Somalia. At the very least, I think it would be easier to fix everything first and then revert only the parts that are incorrect. Can you point out any categories where we need to keep “Somalian”? Freetrashbox (talk) 20:35, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
I affirm that two separate category trees is appropriate, but those can still be renamed "Somali nationals" or "Somali people" and the current "Ethnic Somali people". The sources I see consider "Somalian" an English invention and to various degrees offensive, and most English-speaking WP:RS refer to the country, its people, and the ethnic group as Somali. ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 20:44, 10 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Oppose: See OED Somalian and OED Somali. Hardly worth the trouble of chnanging all these categories while these definitions persist.--Ipigott (talk) 09:09, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Support rename per above QalasQalas (talk) 22:23, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose The proposed change is ambiguous, as Somali may refer to either the ethnic group or the nationality. The separate presence of ethnic somali categories doesn't change this. Specificity and lack of ambiguity is key for categorisation so the only real alternatives here for categories relating to people are "Somali national" or "Somalian". I think the only driver for the change is to demonstrate that "Somalian" is not a neutral term. Some ethnic somalis really don't seem to like it because it's an exonym and doesn't reflect how they identify (as Somali) but that doesn't seem like a neutral point of view – to me it reads as an anti-colonialist and ethnocentric view. When we get into the space of calling certain Afar people Somali, then it becomes clear that this isn't a neutral change at all. It's fine to have opinions about such things, but I don't see how this helps with Wikipedia category system. SFB 12:26, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename Category:Somalian people and it's sub-categories to Category:People from Somalia. This is our standard approach when for various reasons there is not a universally designated or usable demonym for the group of people who are nationals of a country. Such as we have with Category:People from Georgia (country).John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:27, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
    • I would support this change as it avoids issues while retaining specificity. SFB 15:46, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
I would also support this alternative, as it avoids getting in the way of political contention while still being more accurate than "Somalian." ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 17:42, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment - The discussion assumes that "Somali" refers to an ethnic group and "Somalian" to nationality, but that is not the case. For example, the Cambridge Dictionary defines Somali as "belonging to or relating to Somalia or its people." According to the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries, it is defined as "(a person) from Somalia." In short, according to the dictionary, there is virtually no semantic difference between "Somalis" and "Somalian." Furthermore, when it comes to the actual editing process, it is often unclear whether the person in question is a Somalian national. While this is not limited to Somalis, an individual’s nationality is rarely disclosed. If it is disclosed at all, it is limited to cases where Somalian nationality is constitutionally required, such as for the president or ministers. On the other hand, a characteristic of Somalis is that their ancestry can often be traced through their names, and their clans are usually clear (though some may choose to conceal this information). In other words, even if we kept the "Somalian" category, it would be very difficult to classify anything under it. Even if we were to distinguish between the "Somali" and "Somalian" categories, I don't think it would be correct to assign both "Somali people" and "Somalian people" to a single article, for example. Category:PBS Kids original programming

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:02, 16 July 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: This was recently speedied from PBS Kids shows to PBS Kids original programming (by a user who apparently was a sock, which I only found out just now because I was planning to notify them of this discussion). I missed the speedy happening so I only noticed after the fact (when things on my watchlist got the rename) and asked the handling admin what to do and they suggested bringing it to full CfD. I feel as if the change to include "original programming" implies a change in scope that would theoretically suggest removal of programs not necessarily produced with input from or intent to air on PBS but which nonetheless aired there first (for example, Signing Time!, which was originally produced as an independent direct-to-video series and later picked up by the syndication-for-PBS organization American Public Television, or The Zula Patrol); I don't think that change to scope makes sense, which is why my message to Ymblanter was half question, half wishy-washy oppose. I think my suggested new category name:
  • Does not imply a different scope than "PBS Kids shows" the way "PBS Kids original programming" could be interpreted to Withdrawn aspect of rationale, explained in remark with timestamp 02:37, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Is more technically correct for some older children's programs in the category as currently named (for instance, Zoom (1972 TV series) or The Electric Company (the original '70s one)) which were never produced for or aired on PBS Kids (because it did not exist yet) but could easily be described accurately as PBS children's programming
  • Retains the speedy's rationale of uniformity (even if the speedy nom was from a sock), by matching the structure of the similar categories for streaming services, of "(service) children's programming" (even though PBS is a traditional TV channel rather than a streaming service)
It is possible there are other appropriate names, but I think "PBS children's programming" might be the best I could come up with at least. - Purplewowies (talk) 00:03, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename per nominator. Better solution. -- Just N. (talk) 13:07, 28 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment. It's consistent with Discovery Kids original programming, CBC Kids original programming and Universal Kids original programming. As you alluded to, the renaming is consistent with streaming service cats Netflix children's programming, Hulu children's programming, Amazon Prime Video children's programming, Peacock (streaming service) children's programming, Paramount+ children's programming, and Apple TV (streaming service) children's programming. So what is PBS Kids, a separate channel or just a programming block of PBS? The main article for PBS Kids initially suggests the latter. Whereas Discovery Kids indicates it started as a brand and branched off into a separate channel. But then PBS_Kids#24/7_network suggests PBS Kids is indeed a channel, one that was replaced by PBS Kids Sprout (aka Universal Kids) then revived as a channel in 2017. So why rename PBS Kids original programming if it actually is a channel? If the articles contained are wrong, then fix that. But Category:PBS children's programming sounds more like a parent cat for PBS Kids original programming.

I feel as if the change to include "original programming" implies a change in scope that would theoretically suggest removal of programs not necessarily produced with input from or intent to air on PBS but which nonetheless aired there first (for example, Signing Time!, which was originally produced as an independent direct-to-video series and later picked up by the syndication-for-PBS organization American Public Television, or The Zula Patrol); I don't think that change to scope makes sense

The issue is that we do not categorize television/media companies by all programming they have ever aired/streamed. "Original" is included because that is what makes the categorization defining. Otherwise a category like TV Land programming (instead of TV Land original programming) would include every rerun ever broadcast on TV Land and Turner Classic Movies programming (instead of Turner Classic Movies original programming) would include articles like Casablanca (film), Citizen Kane and The Wizard of Oz. That serves no purpose to readers. Οἶδα (talk) 20:37, 28 May 2026 (UTC)
    • To my understanding, things considered modern PBS Kids shows don't typically premiere on the PBS Kids (sub)channels (the PBS Kids that became Sprout was a cable channel, but the current incarnation is an over-the-air channel typically carried as a subchannel of PBS affiliates) but rather, things typically premiere on the block within main PBS channels and the 24 hour subchannel is virtually entirely reruns. (I don't know what this means for the block vs channel thing; my mind is refusing to put together a more complete thought on that...) I'll concede I didn't realize at time of nomination that there was a specific reasoning for the "original programming" language (despite looking for such a reasoning prior to nomination) and maybe in that case the scope should change? Although... syndication in regards to PBS is weird, it feels like--something like, say, Jeopardy! could air on ABC in one market and NBC in another, but something distributed by APT is generally only going to end up on PBS... then again, looking just now, it's likely better (if anything) to recategorize the syndicated stuff under either the American Public Television category or maybe a new subcategory of APT for APT programs? I'll withdraw the scope part of the argument on that grounds. I do still think shows like Zoom (1972 TV series), The Electric Company, Square One Television, 3-2-1 Contact (and more, these are just the first I could bring to mind) are within scope in a way that makes their inclusion in a category like this useful to readers but cannot be accurately described as "PBS Kids" shows because the entirety of their airing predates the creation of the block, so I think it's still worth discussing on that front. - Purplewowies (talk) 02:37, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
Yeah, I see what you're saying. This is a bit confusing and a unique situation all laid out in the article PBS Kids, with "PBS Kids" being a branding/block aired by member stations, but also referencing a specific period where it was a channel, which was then revived, but as you say is virtually entirely reruns. Just look at all of the content at List of programs broadcast by PBS Kids and how it's presented and organized. Basically everything under the PTV/PBS Kids brand is included there, with earlier programming left to List of programs broadcast by PBS. But the categories aren't as organized as those list articles. As you say, a show like The Electric Company predates the creation of the PTV/PBS Kids block. Whereas Mister Rogers' Neighborhood existed both before and during the PTV/PBS Kids block (and even before PBS altogether). Which is likely why that article is categorized into both PBS original programming and PBS Kids original programming. But I admit I'm still unsure of the solution here. We do have other categories for shows by programming block like CBC Kids original programming and Adult Swim original programming. So as I previously wrote, why not keep PBS Kids original programming and make PBS children's programming its parent category? But also, most of the articles for these PBS Kids shows list PBS Kids as the network. Why is that?
To be clear, these "original programming" categories are for programs that were broadcast for the first time on a given network/channel. Whereas the subcategories of Television series by studio are for television series produced, distributed, syndicated or owned by a given company. The PBS original programming category should contain shows whose first-run episodes aired on PBS (member stations). If it is including reruns originally aired on other networks then that needs to be fixed. Οἶδα (talk) 04:39, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
Oppose, no. Pi tau rho alpha (talk) 19:43, 4 June 2026 (UTC) locked as a sock of Imbackjjj. Emk9 (talk) 14:47, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
"But also, most of the articles for these PBS Kids shows list PBS Kids as the network. Why is that?" This is a good question and has had me thinking. (Like, as in I want to know but haven't had time to check if this is kind of like how Nickelodeon and whatever the thing was that used to air in the nighttime hours prior to Nick at Nite's existence were separate networks sharing a channel, rather than separate blocks on the same network.) I do think that if for one reason or another this ends as not renamed, the "PBS children's programming" as a newly created parent of the current named category isn't a bad idea (though I think it would then make sense at that point to shift the scope so that current category members that aren't actually PBS Kids shows but just kids shows on PBS would be shifted to the parent). - Purplewowies (talk) 00:17, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
The articles all could be wrong and having to be changed. That is entirely possible. I guess it would theoretically come down to if new episodes of a show air during the PBS Kids daytime block of the main PBS channel or on the PBS Kids subchannel. But I would think that in some cases they are effectively simulcast or at least staggered by hours, meaning it's the same day. But I say "theoretically" because the very nature of PBS it must vary by station. Meaning some stations prioritize the main PBS channel’s daytime block for premieres. But also it appears that their digital platforms like the PBS Kids app often have episodes available at or near the same time as broadcast. So even if not the first TV airing, that would technically be the first accessible version. All of this leads me to believe this is not worth accounting for in the category system. The analogy to Adult Swim doesn't really work because Cartoon Network is not a decentralized network with member stations that are independently owned/operated/funded with each local station deciding its scheduling across their channels/platforms. Adult Swim is simply a programming block on a single network with a single unified schedule. So I don't believe it would be appropriate to categorize by the PBS Kids block nor do I think it serves readers or editors. A general "children's programming" subcategory is far more comprehensible as far as letting users know "which articles go in which category" and doesn't try to account of an impossible-to-define variable ("PBS or PBS Kids?"). I'll be voting to rename. Οἶδα (talk) 23:12, 5 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Nominator's rationale There is 1 total article in these 2 categories. This is too narrow to aid navigation. The Uganda posting is non-residential and thus non-defining and we would thus delete it. Functionally high commissioners do exactly the same things as ambassadors. There are cases where a person at the same time holds the title of ambassdor to one country and high commissioner to another. We do not generally categorize by name but by what they are. Before a certain year many ambassadors held the title minister plenipotentiary or other such titles. We put them all together in ambassador categories. I think here we should upmerge the article to the general ambassadors category. The one person here was also Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Japan, a category nominated for merger below. Nominator's rationale: merge or reverse merge, overlapping scope. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:02, 14 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose merge, as per the hatnote in Category:Popular music navigational boxes: Not to be confused with Category:Pop music navigational boxes. and similar hatnotes in articles Popular music and Pop music. I wouldn't mind just deleting Category:Popular music navigational boxes, because, overall, Category:Popular music navigational boxes isn't very useful. It isn't easy to define what fits there. Per article Popular music is music with wide appeal that is typically distributed to large audiences through the music industry., while List of popular music genres is a redirect (per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of popular music genres). Maybe membership of article-space Category:Popular music could be used to populate Category:Popular music navigational boxes, but it's not worth it. —andrybak (talk) 16:26, 14 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Nominator's rationale all these categories have 1 or 2 articles. The ones proposed are non-residental appointments and need to be deleted as non-defining. The other ones either are residential appointments and too narrow, although in the case of Czechoslvakia the article does not contain enough details for it to be clear if that was a residential appointment or not. All these categories are too narrow to be of help to navigation.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:12, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Merge Category:Ambassadors of Zimbabwe to Angola to Category:Ambassadors to Angola
  • Delete Category:Ambassadors of Zimbabwe to North Korea
  • Delete Category:High commissioners of Zimbabwe to Pakistan
  • Nominator's rationale There is 1 article total between all 3 categories. It is also in at least 2 other Ambassadors of Zimbabwe categories. So we do not need to merge to that parent. The first was a residential appointment (Zimbabwe and Angola are not that far apart, Zimbabwe cares more about Angola than it does about Pakistan). The other two postings, North Korea and Pakistan were non-residential offices while the subject was posted as a residential ambassador to China. Non-residential ambassadorships are not defining and should not be used to have a category. A 1 article category is too narrow and hinders navigation. We only need to merge to the Ambassadors to Angola target because the article is in other sub-caegories of Category:Ambassadors of Zimbabwe.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:38, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Nominator's rationale since we have various categories that are Foo University librarians, I thought this was for people who were Curators of museums at the University of Missouri. Instead this is members of the Board if Curators of the University of Missouri. This is their name for what is elsewhere a board of visitors, overseers, Regents, trustees etc. "Curator" in Latin means overseer so this is not a truly unexpected use, but it does differ from the main use and can cause confusion.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:56, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

Nominator's rationale: The premise of this category appears to be ill-founded. All major streams of Judaism consider Judaism to be a unitary religion; they only differ as to which streams' conversion requirements are halakhically sufficient. In other words, to Reform Jews there is no such thing as a "convert to Reform Judaism", only a convert to Judaism who happens to have converted at a Reform temple; and to Orthodox and Conservative Jews there is no such thing as a "convert to Reform Judaism" because you've either converted to Judaism in a way that meets their halakhic definition or you aren't a Jew at all. But none will say that someone converted to Reform Judaism.
Tellingly, reliable sources almost never refer to people as converting "to Reform Judaism". In fact, spot-checking entries in this category:
  • May Britt: not verified in body of article
  • Sammy Davis Jr.: not verified in body of article
  • Matt Baker (YouTuber): not verified in body of redirect target; rare case where the source (an WP:ABOUTSELF statement) does say he converted to a specific kind of Judaism, but he says "a mainstream branch of Progressive Judaism" and the article incorrectly easter-eggs that to Reform Judaism (and per he actually had a mixed Reform/Orthodox conversion)
  • Martha Nussbaum: not verified in body of article
  • Elizabeth Taylor: stated in body of article, but fails verification in both cited sources
It is possible that this category could be salvaged by renaming to "Reform converts to Judaism", but that would require checking the entries case-by-case; most of these articles do not verify that the person is/was as a Reform Jew (which is not the same thing as converting through a Reform temple or attending Reform services). Otherwise it should be upmerged to Converts to Judaism. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 02:54, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
