Nominator's rationale: Many recently created unnecessary and dubious category layers. Some of the names have obvious errors. There are some more layers that can be dealt with later to avoid this nomination becoming too large and confusing. The LGBTQ politics categories could potentially be populated by some more subcategories, but I'd argue they're not needed, and the main LGBTQ country categories cover the topics fine. Adding more layers is not helpful for navigation. Mclay1 (talk) 13:45, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Merge/delete, unnecessary intermediate category layers. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:36, 27 May 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure). Staraction (talk · contribs) 13:46, 3 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Nominator's rationale There are only 8 total articles in the whole tree of Ambassadors of the Marshall Islands, 7 biographies and 1 list article. Only the to the United States category has 3 articles, and that is 2 biographies and 1 list article. All of this is too narrow to aid navigation. These mergers will make it much easier to navigate between articles.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:26, 27 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Nominator's rationale all these categories only have 1 article so they hinder naviagation with how narrow they are. Other than Belize in all the other cases the article is on someone who is in at least 1 other sub-cat of Ambassadors of Argentina so we do not need to merge to that parent. We have already merged the Ambassadors of Argetina categories to countries starting with A that we too narrow.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:14, 27 May 2026 (UTC)

  • I'm not fundamentally opposed to a merger in principle, but the problem is that the category is being autogenerated at this name by a template ({{Infobox knot theory}}), and transcluded onto the page in lieu of a direct category declaration — so some care will have to be taken to ensure that this gets merged without either simultaneously breaking all of the other siblings that are at "knots and links", or leaving the page sitting in a redlinked category that doesn't exist. Yet again, this is exactly why WP:TEMPLATECAT specifically militates against using infobox templates to artificially generate and transclude content categories onto pages in lieu of direct categorization. The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Sharia terminology. Relisted accidentally (meant for a different discussion), but thought it would've been too much of a hassle to undo. (non-admin closure) Staraction (talk · contribs) 05:53, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
Nominator's rationale: merge, the scope of the two categories is largely overlapping, they are all Arabic words and the fact that they all come from the Sharia make them all legal terms. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:05, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
Reverse merge This one is shorter and to the point. It is redundant to specify that these are Arabic words because all Islamic terminology is in Arabic. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 12:08, 15 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Oppose This is a demographic that wants a lot of options to choose its own labels. It is not helpful to intersect labels because then that would make a need for more categories than are natural to use. "Gay Wikipedians" currently includes gay men, gay NBs, gay queers, gays, and gay women if they feel like it. It is not useful or productive to make these distinctions or to sort this group out. A person is gay if they self-identify that way and there is no need to add a gender restriction here. Bluerasberry (talk) 19:12, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Rename to Category:Gay men Wikipedians, since Category:Gay user templates has now been moved to Category:Gay men user templates. —Trilletrollet [ Talk | Contribs ] 12:34, 17 June 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Bluerasberry. This would categorize individuals that identify as gay in a category they might not want to be categorized within. There could be several reasons for why they can't remove the category or the template that adds the category, like them being inactive, retired, or dead. It would be better to create a new category titled Category:Gay male Wikipedians or Category:Gay men Wikipedians, instead of moving this one to that location. - Sebbog13 (talk) 03:44, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

  • Merge especially since in general we have decided against categories that only intersect ethnicity and gender. The general view is that like nationality ethnicity by gender categories should be container categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:13, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
" in general we have decided against categories that only intersect ethnicity and gender." Where was this decided? Looking at the subcats of Category:Native American women by tribe or Category:Indigenous women of Asia or Category:Indigenous women of Europe, this doesn't seem to be true, and seems like a bad idea in general. Ethnicity and gender is an important intersection, the topic of many books and scholarly research, and should not be dismissed "in general" (although individual cases may always merit deletion or upmerging of course). Fram (talk) 07:45, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
      • There was a discussion that resulted in making Category:African-American women and other related categories container categories. It is a good idea. We limit by gender categories to cases where gender is a defining aspect of the thing. This is generally not true for ethnicity. It is most often true for specific occupations.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:33, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
I don't think that your claim that ethnicity is generally not a defining aspect of "the thing" (you mean, er, the person?) has much basis in reality. Due to their large scope, it is better for large ethnicities (like African-American) to be subdivided, but that doesn't make it non-defining, and for ethnicities with fewer articles the intersection of ethnicity and gender is a clearly defining aspect. Note that African-American women are simply subdivided by century in thousands of cases (Category:African-American women by century), so it is obvious that your claims about the intersection of ethnicity and gender don't match actual practice (nor actual reality offwiki obviously). The articles Local councils of Malta and List of localities in Malta speak of "localities". What about renaming to Category:Local council-based localities of Malta or just Category:Localities of Malta with an explanation on the category page or Category:Administrative divisions of Malta? Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary sub-categorization. Hayles only has two articles listed under this category, both of which are already listed under Category:Doctor Who serials written by Brian Hayles, making this sub-cat redundant. Nominating this alongside Category:Novels by Brian Hayles, which only has this subcat as content and thus makes the parent unnecessary by proxy. • Keep I shouldn't really bring up WP:WAX here, but why has this category been nominated, and not any others? The abovementioned Category:Doctor Who novelisations has 36 subcategories, of which 22 (more than half) have either two articles listed, or just one.

It's not as if these subcats are likely to grow: many of the authors concerned are now dead, and of those still alive, they are unlikely to novelise any more Doctor Who serials, for the basic reason that the last Doctor Who serial (Survival) was produced in 1989, and all of them have now been novelised.
As for the argument both of which are already listed under Category:Doctor Who serials written by Brian Hayles, making this sub-cat redundant, not all Doctor Who serials were novelised by the original scriptwriter. In particular, Category:Doctor Who serials written by Brian Hayles contains six articles, all of which have been novelised: one by Gerry Davis and Alison Bingeman; two by Hayles himself and three by Terrance Dicks. Regarding the last one, Category:Doctor Who serials novelised by Terrance Dicks (63) contains many stories where the original scriptwriter was somebody other than Hayles or Dicks himself. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:38, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
@Redrose64 While not AfD, Wikipedia:OTHERSTUFF applies here. I nominated this one just because this was the one I happened to stumble on, and was unaware of many of the others. Still, non-helpful subcats are non-helpful subcats, and I don't see why knowing who wrote particular novelisations is super helpful. None of these novelisations have articles, and even then readers looking for which stories have novelisations may not know what a story's given author is. Someone looking for particular novelisations are going to end up having to dig through tons and tons of one note categories with no room for expansion just to find a particular topic. I just don't see the point to these Wikipedia:Overcategorizations. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 19:04, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
As stated above, I shouldn't really bring up WP:WAX here. But of course when nominating the category you did check if it was a branch of a tree. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:21, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
Yes, but just because I'm checking if it's a subcat or not does not necessarily mean I'm going to be checking every other semi-related category. I shouldn't have to look at every semi-associated category just to determine if the one I'm looking at now is helpful or not. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 21:36, 5 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Upmerge all these 1 and 2 article categories. This narrow of categories actively hinders navigation.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:53, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Tag and delete them all, because I don't think the writer of a novelisation is WP:Defining for a TV serial. There are some "new Who" categories here (wrongly called "serials"), but their parent cats Category:Novels by Steven Moffat and Category:Novels by Jenny Colgan have no content other than these novelisations of TV episodes, and should probably also be deleted. I am surprised that this hierarchy has been built for the old serials, rather than categorising them within Category:Television episodes by writer – I have just done that for a couple of writers. Where there is other content for a writer, then upmerge from DW novelisations to Novels by X. Keep only Category:Doctor Who serials novelised by Terrance Dicks because with 63 pages it's useful to keep separate from his original novels. – Fayenatic London 13:49, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Delete them all. I don't automatically see an issue with the categorization. Songs are categorized by the artists that famously covered them (in a release). Films are categorized by the person who composed the soundtrack. My immediate estimation is that these are analagous, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, the articles here are focused on the TV serials, not the novelisations. But every article appears to have a section for the novelisation and an book infobox, as well as external links to the novelisations at ISFDB. But the novelisations are certainly not a considerable part of the articles. I could understand though how this could help readers navigate between novelisations. But this seems like it would be best served in a list article, which already exists at List of Doctor Who novelisations. The glaring issue here is the small size of these categories. And perhaps, as Fayenatic london touched on, just how defining this "writer of a novelisation of a TV serial" categorization is. Works adapted for other media is a defining categorization, and in this case it would be Works adapted into novels. But that appears to be true for virtually every single Doctor Who serial. So upmerging a bunch of TV serial articles to Category:Doctor Who novelisations makes no sense, and grouping them in a category such as Category:Doctor Who serials that were novelised wouldn't mean much or improve navigation when it all overlaps. Nominator's rationale: "Films shot in" category newly created for just one film. As always, every city does not automatically get one of these the moment one film has been shot there -- there have to be several films shot in a city before it gets its own dedicated city-level category, and if there are just one, two or three films then they just stay in a higher-level category at the state or country level in the meantime.
As I'm not all that knowledgeable about the Mexican film industry, I'm willing to withdraw this if somebody with more expertise can populate the category properly with other films -- but it requires a lot more than just one film before it's justifiable. Bearcat (talk) 15:22, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
