Contributor copyright investigation

This CCI cleanup subpage has been opened because substantiated concerns of repeated copyright violations from the listed contributor requires systematic review of contributions. Listings are not intended to imply a presumption of bad faith on the part of any contributor, as Wikipedia's copyrights policy differs from international copyright policies and many inadvertently violate through misunderstandings.

If you are here because of a note on an article's talk page explaining removal of text, please do not restore any removed text without first ensuring that the text is free from copyright violations. You are welcome to use sourced facts that may have been removed to create new content in your own words or use brief quotations of copyrighted material in accordance with the non-free content policy and guideline.

Instructions

All contributors with no history of copyright problems are welcome to contribute to clean up. Contributors with open CCIs are considered to have a history of copyright problems and are not welcome to directly evaluate their own or others' CCIs. They are welcome to assist with rewriting any problems identified, and are encouraged to assist with accessing offline and paywalled sources.

If contributors have been shown to have a history of extensive copyright violation, it may be assumed without further evidence that all of their major contributions are copyright violations, and they may be removed indiscriminately in accordance with Wikipedia:Copyright violations. This includes CCI subjects, so all of the below listed contributions may be removed indiscriminately. However, to avoid collateral damage, efforts should be made when possible to verify infringement before removal.

When every section is completed, please blank the page except for the yellow box and {{NOINDEX}}, and place {{subst:Courtesy blanked}} below. Then mark the case at Template:CCIlist with completed=yes. This will alert a clerk that the listing needs to be archived.

  • Examine the article or the diffs linked below.
  • If the contributor has added creative content, either evaluate it for copyright concerns or remove it.
  • Evaluating for copyright concerns may include checking the listed sources, spot-checking using search engines, google books, or archives, and looking for major differences in writing style. The background should give indication of the kinds of copyright concerns that have been previously detected. For older text, be careful about mirrors of Wikipedia. It may be helpful to look for significant changes to the text after it was entered or using archives to eliminate later mirrors. If you cannot determine which came first, remove the text.
  • If you remove large portions of text presumptively, place {{subst:CCI|name=Contributor name}} on the article's talk page.
  • If you remove large portions of the text (or revert to a previous clean version) normally, place {{subst:cclean}} on the article's talk page. The url parameter may be optionally used to indicate source.
  • To tag an article created by the contributor for presumptive deletion, place {{subst:copyvio|url=see talk}} on the article's face and {{subst:CCId|name=Contributor name}} on the article's talk page. List the article as instructed at the copyright problems board, but do not notify the contributor.
  • After examining an article:
  • replace the diffs after the colon on the listing with one of the following and your signature (generated by four tildes ~~~~):
  • {{y}} if copyright problems were found. If the article is blanked, please indicate this as well.
  • {{n}} if no problem was found.
  • {{?}} if the material is no longer present or rewritten.
  • If a section is complete, collapse it by placing {{collapse top}} and {{collapse bottom}} beneath the section header and after the final listing.

  • Summary: User has already received 5 copyvio warnings on their user talk page, has continued to copyvio for years with multiple articles affected, has numerous copyvio warnings for images, inserts original research into articles, has resorted to editing while logged out to hide their work from scrutiny, and generally has left a mess to clean up, most recently in the horse breed articles.

I discovered several more copyvios that the user made after they had received at least 2 copyvio-warnings on their user talk page.

That is a total of 14 known articles affected with copyright violations by Obversa.

Obversa uploaded numerous images with copyright or licensing violations, many listed and warned on their user talk page and commons user discussion page. Obversa has uploaded 68 images to commons (25 since deleted as non-free), and uploaded 10 to Wikipedia (6 deleted). That is 40% deleted for violations, spanning three years (October 2021-December 2024).

Additional disruption includes having added uncited or unverifiable content (OR) that has had to be reverted. Recently found-and-reverted OR content occurred in these articles: Clydesdale horse (GA), Narragansett Pacer (GA), Lipizzan (GA), Tersk Stud, St. Simon (horse), Knabstrupper, Frederiksborger, Arabo-Friesian (not yet removed content about Jalisco), and British Spotted Pony. Many of their large-scale [non-copyvio & non-OR] additions have had to be trimmed or removed due to the content being UNDUE, COATRACK or CRUFT.

I'm not the only editor who has recently removed some of their content (others include User:Montanabw and User:Justlettersandnumbers), but Obversa recently posted several PAs directed at me: .

For the last 4 months, Obversa has been editing while logged out in order to mislead (a form of sockpuppetry), for the purpose of evading scrutiny by me and others. They posted 3 confessions (see edit summary, post1, post2). A search for IP-edits which match this user's patterns, and which geolocate to the same area, has uncovered numerous IP addresses (seemingly a new IP each day). The mutating IP addresses have greatly hindered the search for other edits by this user which might include more copyvios or unverifiable content which needs cleaning up. I have identified at least 12 IPs, though I'm sure there are more.

I am deeply concerned about User:Obversa's persistent copyright violations (well over 3 years), with their most recent copyright violations occurring as recently as 3 weeks ago. Though they have received copyvio notices spread out over 2 years, those as well as other corrections/warnings have gone unheeded. It is an unacceptable burden to other editors who must find and clear the violations. I cannot imagine that any further attempts at correction would result in any improvement since others have tried before, with no noticeable change in editing behavior. With their recent practice of editing while logged out, it is even harder to locate their edits to scrutinize them. I've also blocked the /40 IPv6 for confessed loutsocking, but most of the articles on that IP were edited by the user so as long as people check for the IP range we should be okay not listing it. There's a good amount of OR, SYNTH, and verif failures mixed in with copyvio and uncited content. Sennecaster (Chat) 20:16, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
