Owodo

This article is about Owodo (r. 1125–1130, d. c. 1133), the thirty-first Ogiso ('King') of the pre-imperial Benin kingdom of Igodomigodo and the last ruler of the Ohuede dynasty, succeeding his father, Arigho. His rule began during recovery from a prolonged famine but was dominated by palace factionalism, disruptive attacks from Osogan and a high-profile domestic scandal that led to the exile (and, in some accounts, the attempted execution) of his son Ikaladerhan. Conflict with the Edionnisen ('Great Nobles') and public outrage after Owodo struck and killed a noble's pregnant widow, an act considered Kirikuvua under the kingdom's law and punishable by deposition, prompted an emergency council meeting to declare him unfit to rule. He was deposed and exiled to Ihinmwirin, where he died in obscurity three years later. This article passed GA and I would be happy to address any comments re the WP:FACRIT, thank you so much already. Drive-by from UC
- Much of the information on Owodo derives from the self-published books of Osarẹn Ọmọregie, whose work, based on claimed oral traditions, has been criticised for lacking verifiable sources and historical methodology, but is influential among Edo historians. -- as does much of this article! I've never heard of an article calling out a source as unreliable in the lead and then proceeding to uncritically cite it on matters of fact. This surely needs to change. - Yes — what Nikki said. The issue is that a Wikipedia article is relying heavily on a source with questionable reliability, not that we’re admitting to it. The solution is to fix the sourcing. UndercoverClassicist T·C 08:22, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

- Remove the unreliable sources from the article and replace them with sources meeting WP:HQRS. If you are using primary or self-published sources, follow WP:PRIMARY and WP:SELFPUB in doing so. Honestly, this is probably a pre-FAC job given the amount of reliance on this source — at the moment I would suggest withdrawing and working on it away from here, since the article pretty clearly doesn’t meet the FAC sourcing requirements as it stands. - Thank you, @Nikkimaria, I fixed the px–upright thing. There are no images I know of to represent even any Ogiso, but I would be more than grateful if more experienced image finders could dig something out relevant to the subject. The statue on the hand was taken by me, it stands in a town in Edo, Nigeria and I just took a picture of it. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 05:32, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
