  The second replacement is not a high-resolution scan, and I do not have a record of where the replacement (1) image was sourced from, due to the reason that I had purchased a new laptop as my old one (which had the source of the image noted down) was destroyed beyond repair.   @GuyMan529 I noticed that the images were updated on every single page before a clear consensus was reached and prior to the close of the voting period. Could you clarify the basis for implementing the change at this stage?  As I understand it, changes following a nomination or vote should generally wait until discussion concludes and consensus is established. If I am mistaken about the procedure, please let me know, and I will be replacing the image with the previously used lead image 'til consensus is reached. @Auspiciouswastaken Oh yes. I believe I made those edits because the 1st replacement image had no consensus to begin with (I posted those edits during midnight, so I don’t exactly know why, so I apologise.) But that being said, until consensus has been reached, I believe we should keep the original image (Gilbert Stuart Williamstown Portrait of George Washington.jpg) as the lead image for the George Washington article.   I'm mostly going off of three things; first, if you see the painting in person, the cool tones are far more evident than yellow tones, some evidence of which can be seen in this commons photo, showing the photo as it's displayed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Second, I trust the Hasselblad used for the replacement photo's upload more than the image to be delisted, which has no info about how it was scanned/photographed, etc. Lastly, the replacement image was taken by the Smithsonian's staff from what I can tell from the image's metadata, which I trust more than a scan loosely attributed to the Google Art Project.   What I don't understand is how radically different the centers of brightness are. The first one has the in-scene light seeming to come from above, while the second version has an all-around vignette. The Commons photo you linked seems to favor the original, brighter image as more accurate, although it shows the grove in the bottom right as brighter than they are in the image proposed for delisting.   Thanks for pinging me, which I'll do in return for Moonreach and Charlesjsharp, as they had questions regarding this delisting.

  This is one of my favorite paintings, and sitting in front of it was, according to my wife, where she fell in love with me, so I literally want to apologize if I come off strongly, because I love it - I have a print of it at both my work desk and in home office. I feel very strongly that the yellowed tint of the work does not represent the piece accurately, and have uploaded my own photo taken of the piece from 2021 for another comparison.

  To be frank, I just don't see that yellowed tint in the piece, and think it is a misrepresentation of what the work actually looks like; the blue hues are far stronger overall, and especially in the sky. The only argument I could maybe make in favor of the yellowed tint would be the lighting the Smithsonian has it under gives it a slightly yellow-ish hue, but it's not comparable to the work we currently have featured.

  I'd be willing to contact the Smithsonian myself to get this resolved, but have no idea where to begin with that, so if anyone knows an email or phone line I could use, or where to look for those, I'd be in your debt!

• @Northern-Virginia-Photographer: the page https://www.si.edu/contacts lists an email address, infosi.edu, and a phone number with a 202 area code, under "General Information". Perhaps when Google Art Project recorded its version of the painting, the painting was directly under an incandescent light which produced a yellowish glow from the top, while the new version was taken with a camera flash aimed at the center of the image. ↠Pine (✉) 17:52, 8 May 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for that explanation (and I think the story to go with it is neat). Your photo doesn't have that vignette effect around the perimeter, which tells me that's a photography artifact rather than a genuine component of the picture. As things stand, I don't think either one of these images is a faithful reproduction, and my current stance would be delist without replacing unless a third, more accurate version comes forward. The image was taken as part of the VERONA project which captures images of van Eyck's works worldwide using the same equipment and under the same standardized conditions to enable accurate comparison between works.
