Free images of the disaster exist on Commons, rendering the non-free image unnecessary. Traumnovelle (talk) 00:44, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

What specific image on Commons do you believe would replace this one? Nikkimaria (talk) 00:54, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
File:Aberfan disaster.jpg is the best one but File:Aberfan spoil heaps post disaster.tif can also illustrate it Traumnovelle (talk) 03:18, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
The former does not appear to be correctly licensed - it lacks evidence supporting its tagging and the given source claims it is all-rights-reserved. I don't agree the latter is a sufficient substitute. Nikkimaria (talk) 03:31, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
I can't load the source to confirm that but it should be nominated for deletion if so. The latter is an image of the disaster, it may not the best one but we often have to sacrifice quality for free files. Traumnovelle (talk) 04:18, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep The latter is not clear what it’s showing. The non-free file is a visually clear image that leaves readers in no doubt about what happened. - SchroCat (talk) 04:21, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
Delete File:Aberfan spoil heaps post disaster.tif is honestly good enough (perhaps with some markup) to replace this image, but in case there is any doubt, here are several free alternatives I have found:
Based5290 :3 (talk) 07:36, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
As far as I am aware, ALL those files are still under copyright and should not be hosted on Commons. - SchroCat (talk) 07:54, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
How so? Based5290 :3 (talk) 08:05, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
Non free images should be--as far as I am aware--free from copyright in both the home country and in the US. All these are still under copyright in the UK, which is the 'home country' of the images (ie. where the copyright holders are based). - SchroCat (talk) 08:27, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
Except {{Simultaneous US publication}} over at Commons very plainly lays out that works simultaneously published in the US are considered US works for the purposes of whether the work can be hosted at Commons. See also c:Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Works by Ernest Howard Shepard. Even if consensus in those previous discussions were to be overturned somehow, that would not stop these images from being public domain in the United States and therefore being able to be used here on English Wikipedia to replace entirely non-free content. Based5290 :3 (talk) 08:36, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
They could be uploaded locally to en.wiki if the UK copyright is a concern, which still means a free file can be used to replace the non-free file. Traumnovelle (talk) 09:56, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
If you haven't thought so, then why haven't you nominated any one of them yet for deletion at Commons? George Ho (talk) 08:36, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
That's not an appropriate question. - SchroCat (talk) 08:49, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
What's so not appropriate about what I asked you? George Ho (talk) 08:51, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
Oh, wait... These were uploaded just about an hour ago, huh? George Ho (talk) 08:54, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Once PRODded, cannot be re-PRODded when Deletion Delayer de-PRODded. I can't help wonder whether Grand-Duc has known the standard rules of WP:PROD. Also, the Commons copy is nominated for deletion (nom link).

Here's the original PROD rationale:

Probable copyvio pending further evidence. I think I got too hasty while doing the transfer from EN: I forgot to check whether the "American Scientist" is actually an open publication with a suitable licensing. So I dug deeper and found https://www.researchgate.net/publication/285135057_Gecko_adhesion_Evolutionary_nanotechnology_Philos_Trans_A_Math_Phys

On the page 2, there are images which really look like having been the source of the montage here, those images are credited to other people: Figure 1. Structural hierarchy of the gecko adhesive system. Images (a,b) provided by Mark Moffett. (a) Ventral view of a tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) climbing a vertical glass surface. (b) Ventral view of the foot of a tokay gecko, showing a mesoscale array of seta-bearing scansors (adhesive lamellae). (c) Microscale array of setae are arranged in a nearly grid-like pattern on the ventral surface of each scansor. In this scanning electron micrograph, each diamond-shaped structure is the branched end of a group of four setae clustered together in a tetrad. (d) Cryo-SEM image of a single gecko seta (image by S. Gorb and K. Autumn). Note individual keratin fibrils comprising the setal shaft. (e) Nanoscale array of hundreds of spatular tips of a single gecko seta. ( f) Synthetic spatulae fabricated from polyimide at UC Berkeley in the laboratory of Ronald Fearing using nanomoulding (Campolo et al. 2003). (underlinings by me)

The paper itself has been written by one "Kellar Autumn" and a "N. Gravish", which would fit the current source statement, but when looking at the image, only the part "fine microstructure" is actually reliably sourced from this researcher "K. Autumn.", the other illustrations not.

Oh, and here's Deletion Delayer's rationale for de-PRODding:

I object to the deletion because I do not think it would be good if the file was deleted from Wikipedia, as it would be bad for the quality of the page. I plan to just keep deleting this tag every 7 days, this way the file will never be deleted

George Ho (talk) 04:01, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
@George Ho: Indeed, I didn't know the intricacies of PROD (my main activities are on Commons and DE-WP) and simply went on to revert vandalism (which was made by a sock, cf. the Delayer's user page). Thanks for switching over to the orderly process! Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 04:55, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Well below American ToO. Just some colored text. Based5290 :3 (talk) 04:39, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Export to Commons I'm quite conservative on the TOO but this is well below the US TOO with the most original part being the 'DA' logo, but it just consists of an italicised letter D leaning into a letter A. Traumnovelle (talk) 00:19, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

Why is a mugshot in an article filled with PD images of the same guy necessary? I was unable to find any contemporary publications, but I could also be bad at searching. Might be PD, delete otherwise. Based5290 :3 (talk) 19:52, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

  • Delete it is not necessary to have an image of his mugshot.

The article where the image is used already includes the main single cover, which sufficiently identifies the song. This remix EP artwork is very similar and adds no meaningful new encyclopedic value. As such, it fails WP:NFCC#3a, which requires minimal use of non-free content, and WP:NFCC#8, since the article remains fully understandable without it. Non-free files should not be kept where they merely duplicate an already adequate image. Sricsi (talk) 21:45, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
