Dr Mike Dickison (User:Giantflightlessbirds, contact: mike
rove.wiki) is working as a Wikipedian in Residence from October 2025 to June 2026 with the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (MacD) a New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE), to upload images to Commons, improve Wikidata on researchers and publications, cite published research to improve relevant Wikipedia articles, and create new articles as needed.

I attended the MacDiarmid Institute Annual Symposium (notes) in November 2025 and gave two presentations:
Goals
- An initial assessment of the coverage of MacD researchers and research in Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. ✓
- In Wikipedia there is the Institute itself, Alan MacDiarmid and Paul Callaghan (see below), and mentions in 24 other articles (15/10 corrected or added the full spelling to 6, added 4 wikilinks to the main MacD article)
- Category:MacDiarmid Institute in WikiCommons has just one photo (of Nicola Gaston), and only three subcategories: a former director and two associate investigators—no current PIs, no logo, and no building or lab image to represent MacD as a whole. (15/10 added 9 PI subcategories) Will also need a Commons Creator template. (21/11 logo uploaded, and MacDiarmid Institute template created for photos)
- 16 Wikidata properties for MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (Q6721799), half that of Callaghan Innovation (Q16256127) and Cawthron Institute (Q5055246) (15/10 improved to 30). Need date of official opening, image,
logo, list of directors and their dates. All PIs are now in Wikidata, need to be linked to MacD as employer.
- An improved Wikipedia article about the MacDiarmid Institute from
(Oct 2025) to 
, summarising the origins and main investigators, the research themes and projects, and a selected publications list and outcomes, linking back to its website. (12/11 origins section and infobox added, 21/11 logo added) - A Wikimedia Commons category for each researcher where possible, using images supplied by the MacDiarmid Institute, with a profile photo assigned to their Wikidata item.
- Advise on a MacDiarmid Institute copyright and licensing strategy to make publications, photos, and other research outputs Wikipedia-compatible and open-licensed where possible and add Wikipedia into the normal science outreach process.
- Make sure all 33 Principal Investigators are in Wikidata, linked both to their ORCiD profiles and to some representative publications, with an open-licensed photo.
- Updated in April to include the 52 Associate Investigators as well.
- Work through the Inspired One Hundred list and make sure all are similarly covered in Wikidata.
- Use key published papers from each main research area to improve relevant Wikipedia articles, linking back to the Institute's Wikipedia article.
- Create further articles about selected researchers, especially early-career, Māori, and Pasifika, and spinout companies as time and media coverage in independent sources allows.
- Updated in April to encompass the critical minerals articles listed below

Critical minerals / critical materials
In February 2026 the Director of the MacDiarmid Institute, Nicola Gaston, wrote a piece for Newsroom pointing out that while the discussion of critical minerals is centred around mining, there is very little discussion of recovery or recycling, nor of the substitution of other substances to produce the materials actually used in technology.[1] As part of this project, we will be examining articles on New Zealand critical minerals identified by the Wood Mackenzie report in 2024,[2] and adding information and citations (MacDiarmid Institute or international) on recovery and substitution where missing.
