Wikipedia:No ableism

Essay on editing Wikipedia From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Please, don't be ableist, or in the other words: don't add any ableist comments about editors who have physical, mental, or intellectual disabilities. Wikipedia has many users who have certain disorders like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or OCD. Anyone, whether an administrator or not, should respect others.

Even Gandhi would be saddened by ableist behavior. He advocated for peace and respect among all people, and we should follow his example.

This essay encourages editors to stay calm, respectful and not to add ableist comments.

A new contributor, for example someone with autism, may not understand or interpret an issue or a warning on their user talk page as intended. You should help such editors by explaining patiently. Ignoring or failing to explain can prevent them from understanding. Editors who have physical, mental, or intellectual disabilities are also important Wikipedia contributors. These editors should be asked to read and follow our policies and guidelines. Therefore, we strongly recommend you not to be ableist toward editors who have physical, mental, or intellectual disabilities.

Please don't be ableist

  • Understand that people with disabilities are very valuable to the community.
  • Don't forget that our motto and our invitation to people with disabilities should always be: Be bold!
  • Avoid intensifiers such as exclamation points (!!!!) and words such as terrible, dumb, stupid, bad, vandal, troll, evil, imbecile, criminal, a hazard etc.
  • Explain things through edit summaries or on their user talk page.
  • Avoid excessive Wikipedia jargon
  • Assume good faith on the part of the disabilities.
  • Remember: editors with disabilities = human. And you are human, too.

If you are ableist

If you are ableist, your behavior could harm editors with physical, mental, or intellectual disabilities. Anyone can request administrator attention at WP:ANI if one behaves in an ableist manner. Collecting relevant diffs can help with the report.
