Murta or Chilean guava

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. There was a consensus to delete, and several !voters agreed that the "or" formulation is improbable. Epicgenius (talk) 14:10, 3 September 2026 (UTC)

This redirect combines two common names that Ugni molinae is known by, "murta" and "Chilean guava". Nobody refers to the plant as "Murta or Chilean guava" and I highly doubt anybody would ever search this. AllTheUsernamesAreInUse (talk) 22:54, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Speedy delete, G6, moved about a half hour after creation over 20 years ago. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 00:17, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete: "or" formulations are not appropriate. - In solidarity, UtherSRG (talk) 14:56, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep Unambiguous and both names are mentioned in the article. My web searches turn up several hits for this exact phrase, and this redirect seems particularly useful since the article title is the scientific, rather than the vernacular, name. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 18:51, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Many many things go by multiple names. Having redirects of the form "X or Y" (in whatever combination(s) of X, Y, Z, ... are possible) for any of them is inappropriate unless it's some standard way of referring to it. This is not one of those cases, and it's implausible that anyone would search for this. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 21:42, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
  • N.b., Chilean guavaChilean guava already redirects to Ugni molinae. Murta is a disambiguation page, and Murta (plant) is also ambiguous, though something like Murta (fruit) could also redirect to Ugni molinae. --BDD (talk) 19:28, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete per Uther and Deacon. Who would search for this expecting it to be the article title? Mx User (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 03:02, 3 September 2026 (UTC)

Bryan Kohberger (Criminal)

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was no consensus. The target article was also merged halfway through, and the lowercase variant undeleted, making evaluating consensus difficult. No prejudice to a renomination in a month or so when everything's stabilized. Rusalkii (talk) 21:54, 4 September 2026 (UTC)

Speedy deleted nominated was rejected. There were concerns raised that time was prejudicial at the AFD nom (not by me). Additionally we don't need a dab title since there is only one article on a person named Bryan Kohberger. 4meter4 (talk) 17:22, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

Note that there was also Bryan Kohberger (criminal) which was speedy deleted by Kj cheetham. So we literally have admins disagreeing over speedy implementation.4meter4 (talk) 18:03, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep and restore Bryan Kohberger (criminal). It's not an attack to refer to someone who has been convicted of crimes as a 'criminal'. For example, here's the NYT referring to him as one. -- Tavix (talk) 18:06, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
@Tavix: Why? What is the purpose of creating a disambiguated title when there are no other people with this name with articles? I mean fundamentally we don't create dab pages until we need to disambiguate. There is only one article about a Bryan Kohberger. This fails WP:D2D. The only reason to disambiguate at the present time is to shame the subject as its not differentiating between people of the same name. 4meter4 (talk) 18:17, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
    They're simply {{R from unnecessary disambiguation}}s, and unnecessary isn't a good reason to delete. -- Tavix (talk) 19:21, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
Um... I feel like this some sort of dystopian thread. How exactly is violating WP:Disambiguation policy acceptable? We shouldn't be creating dab pages willy nilly.4meter4 (talk) 21:06, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
This is a redirect, not a disambiguation page. What specifically is being "violated"?-- Tavix (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
So let me get this straight. Someone erroneously creates a disambiguated title rather than creating the page at Bryan Kohberger. It properly gets moved to Bryan Kohberger, and we are now going to defend a redirect? This is ridiculous. We don't need a redirect at this name; particularly when editors at a pertinent AFD and an admin have also accused it of being inflamatory/attack page. There's no practical reason to have a redirect, and there are good reasons not to have one under this name. Why defend a mistake? why have a redirect at this title? It has no practical use, and its raised objections.4meter4 (talk) 01:29, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
I don't see evidence that it was created erroneously and it's definitely not an attack page. It sounds like this is also a {{R from move}}, which is another reason to keep redirects as they help people who are looking for an article in its former location to find the current location. The most noteworthy example would be at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bryan Kohberger (Criminal), where this redirect is being employed there to direct editors to the current article's location. -- Tavix (talk) 02:57, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
The Bryan Kohberger page was page protected to prevent article creation, so it was created to get around a page protection. I would say trying to circumvent a page block is a type of error.4meter4 (talk) 14:08, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep and restore per Tavix. Thryduulf (talk) 19:54, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete. This page title is improper and is unlikely to be one users search for when looking for information about the case or its perpetrator. It only exists as a redirect because the page was created here a few days/weeks ago rather than at Bryan Kohberger (this links to that page's logs), where it wouldn't have been possible at that time because it was protected from article creations. --Pinchme123 (talk) 01:54, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep and restore per Tavix. PARAKANYAA (talk) 08:52, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment Having reviewed the G10 criteria again, I believe I made a mistake in deleting Bryan Kohberger (criminal) and have undone that action and declined the CSD. Specifically due to Redirects from plausible search terms are not eligible under this criterion. from WP:G10. I am making no comment if it should be deleted on other grounds, only that it doesn't meet CSD G10. -Kj cheetham (talk) 10:30, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete Move completed, page is simply no longer needed as a redirect and has no previous link-out history to preserve. Nathannah • 📮 16:33, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment The target page has now been deleted with its content to be merged into 2022 Idaho student murders. I see zero reason why this redirect should still exist. To reiterate my !vote above, it has no link-out history (the only link I can think of is to the merge discussion), it's longer to type than simply the guy's name so searching for it is unlikely, it wouldn't have been created in the first place given the page protections that were in place for Bryan Kohberger, and with the capital Criminal, it's not even a correctly-titled disambiguation. --Pinchme123 (talk) 05:51, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
The target page has not been deleted, the history is still intact. -- Tavix (talk) 14:28, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
You're correct, it was blanked and then turned into its own redirect. But that doesn't mean this redirect (which now would be a double-redirect) should remain. What little history of this page that there is is of no value. --Pinchme123 (talk) 15:41, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
A simple note in the AfD about the RfD fate will resolve this artificial conflict; it's the only real link outstanding. Nathannah • 📮 20:34, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Epicgenius (talk) 00:50, 15 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep because Redirects are cheap and there is an existing deletion discussion that references this redirect. Unlike the redirect Bryan Kohberger (criminal), which is a plausible search term, this redirect is in active use on existing talk pages and referenced by the deletion discussion page as the article was moved to Bryan Kohberger before it was merged with the 2022 Idaho student murders article. both pages reference the deletion discussion which references this redirect, so deleting it will break the integrity of the deletion discussion as it will imply the article was deleted, when it wasn't. The redirect is also needed for attribution traceability reasons. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 05:21, 15 August 2026 (UTC)
It's referenced as point of discussion to delete it. This is a ridiculous Catch-22 circular argument.4meter4 (talk) 05:35, 15 August 2026 (UTC)

Surely there's a better target for this. I don't see anything more specific than megastructure, should it point there? Maybe Astronomical engineering or Technosignature? SevenSpheres (talk) 23:10, 27 July 2026 (UTC)

  • retarget to florida delete as too vague to be of use. neither target discusses alien megastructures in enough detail to warrant either redirect. research of my own didn't net enough stuff to suggest notability for the concept either, with only vague mentions and one article specifically ruling this possibility out for the dimming of a star consarn (talk beige) (count ribs) 13:12, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

Comment: noting Technosignature has some discussion of the topic also. SevenSpheres (talk) 14:36, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

  • Delete per WP:XY, ambiguous misspelling. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 22:03, 16 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment/Question: This is certainly an ambiguous misspelling and my first instinct was to delete. Teleportation is the more popular article and the more common word so if anything the misspelling seems more likely to refer to that. Per the history, it looks like the creator did make this typo/misspelling for Teleoperation. Several minutes later the creator made a seemingly identical edit to the correctly spelled title, seemingly realizing their mistake. Within a few weeks another editor blanked and redirected this to the correct title. Is this speedy eligible as a page that was obviously created in error? Or does it need to be preserved for attribution? I don't see that the history is worth saving unless there is a strong need to.—Myceteae‍🍄‍🟫 (talk) 18:43, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

No such section, and no information about this character at the target. There is mention in multiple other articles, although I couldn't find a single suitable one for retargeting. The Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (film) has a two-word description, but the same is not available at the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets book. It would be odd to target the film over the book. Delete to favour search results. The page has some history though. Jay 10:49, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

  • Retarget to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (film). If the character currently appears there, but not at the article of the book, a search result will not provide more than a hit of the film anyway. So the redirect seems easier. The target can be changed again if the situation changes. Daranios (talk) 15:13, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

This is a MOS shortcut that doesn't point into the MOS (Manual of Style). That seems incorrect. There's even an edit notice on the page:

This is a page in the MOS namespace, which should only be used for shortcuts to the manual of style.

It was changed earlier this month then changed back.

I propose retargeting to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Notes and references, but I'm not sure what to do about existing links to MOS:REF.

In the meantime, I'll create MOS:REFSMOS:REFS as a workaround to point into the Layout page. This can be used if this proposal falls through.

Obviously support since I made the original edit, but. I was a bit wary since it is a very long standing redirect, but only about 50 pages link to it (at least when I made the edit originally) so I figured the change was worth it. pattersonuwu njz (talk) 19:04, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was no consensus. There is a clear consensus not to delete. Commenters are split between keeping the current target, optionally with a refinement to the name section, and several redirect options, of which the two leading candidates are Lake Ontario naming dispute and American expansionism under Donald Trump. It was difficult to evaluate a clear consensus between these three options as the situation was changing rapidly, both in the real world and onwiki (Lake Ontario naming dispute was only created partway through this discussion, and had an active AfD for most of it). Support, while the US name change may prove to be transient, it should be recorded in an encyclopedia as a lasting record of Trumps character. This action was most certainly a response to failure of the trade talks, so 2025–2026 United States trade war with Canada and Mexico seems to be the most applicable redirect. Derek Andrews (talk) 17:59, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Keep - This redirect is valid as His Excellency Donald J. Trump has used the term "Lake America" to refer this body of water. His Excellency Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States, has proclaimed as follows: "This is Lake Ontario, in Canada and in the United States, But we’re gonna make a little change. We’re gonna call it something different than Lake Ontario. We’re gonna call it Lake America. And all it takes is a good pen and some intelligence". Dn9ahx (talk) 14:29, 27 August 2026 (UTC)

Delete for now because I don't believe there is widespread evidence of usage, even at the official level, yet. I noticed "Gulf of America", which is highly comparable, redirects to a naming controversy page. But since this is so recent, there hasn't even been time to see how it unfolds. Then if it becomes as widespread as "Gulf of America", for consistency, I think it should redirect to Lake Ontario in the meantime while they make a naming controversy page, if they do so at all. But this just seems inappropriately recent. Either way, whatever is chosen, I believe it is most logical and most reasonable to apply a similar approach to whatever is done with "Gulf of America", graded by timeliness, media/official acceptance, and individual use. ~2026-46776-70 (talk) 20:42, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Keep and redirect to an appropriate section if possible: PBS News, Associated Press, The Washington Post, NBC News, etcetera. People from other countries (including me!) still name it Lake Ontario, as Talk:Lake Ontario/FAQ explicitly states, so this redirect may not be needed. Keep: I agree it’s a stupid, petty, and offensive move, but as a user stated above, Wikipedia is not censored. I’m sure people in Central Pennsylvania get offended by the term “Pennsyltucky”, but we aren’t going to delete that article on their behalf. When someone searches “Lake America” on Wikipedia, it’s probably because they want to know which of the Great Lakes this little stunt is being pulled against, so deleting this redirect would not be be very helpful for that purpose. • Not an attestable name for this body of water. Anybody who types this into Wikipedia is either looking for information about the name (not the lake itself) or not actually looking for information at all, so pointing it at Lake Ontario# is misleading. Should be retargeted. American expansionism under Donald Trump#Canada currently has the most information, though Lake Ontario#Name may eventually surpass it if that section survives in the longterm. • Keep if only because when he did the same with the Gulf of Mexico, the United States Board on Geographic Names almost immediately made the change which meant that nearly all US Federal Agencies (such as the National Weather Service, the US Geological Survey, NOAA, etc...) along with several private entities such as Google Maps (at least on the US version of their service) adopted the nomenclature. • Don't delete - beyond that I don't much care. My philosophy for Wikipedia has always been, for any significant topic, "someone searching for this should be given relevant information on it" and deletion prevents that. Yes, this is the name given to Lake Ontario by a single dementia suffering idiot who's on his 20th stroke, but it's still relevant enough, given who the idiot in question is. Whether it redirects to an article on expansionism under Trump, an article on the naming controversy itself, or a section in the Lake Ontario article, doesn't matter to me. If it's plausible that anyone could possibly type in "Lake America" when looking for information about Lake Ontario (and I think it is) and if Lake Ontario mentions the "Lake America" thing (which it does in the targeted section), then the small benefit of keeping it outweighs the negligible benefit of removing it. • (edit conflict) Keep and do not retarget to a section. Considering the name is mentioned in the Lake Ontario article, I think keeping it as the target follows the principle of least astonishment for people that are just looking for it by its alternative name per Justin Kunimune above. The article currently links to the trade war anyways. I don't think it should be retargeted to the #Name section because I don't think whatever convenience there is of having the page awkwardly jump when it's finished loading outweighs serving the widest amount of people. If people want to read about the alternative name, it's in the first section. Regardless, I think it's unreasonable to expect that even people who've only read the lead would assume it's a well-used name because then it would appear in the lead. --– Mullafacation『talk』 16:46, 28 August 2026 (UTC)

  • Retarget to Lake Ontario naming dispute (noting however that this article may soon be deleted), Keep if that article is deleted. I do not see how any of the criteria under WP:R#DELETE have been met. A couple criteria for WP:R#KEEP, notably points 3 and 5, are met. Retargets to 'American expansionism under Donald Trump' to me seem misplaced, as it seems to me likely that those searching 'Lake America' at this point are most likely looking for more detail on the dispute, which the Lake Ontario naming dispute article provides. They may secondarily be looking for information on the lake at the centre of this dispute, making 'keep' appropriate. Down the line there would need to be some reassessment of which is more appropriate. A redirect to a page on 'American expansionism' verges on WP:RGW, a page some editors may think those searching this term should be reading, but not the article they were looking for. But the name is not in global use and may never be fully implemented even in the US; the governor of New York state, the only US state that borders the lake, has said NY won't be using it. So would a solution be to make Lake America a disambiguation page rather than a redirect?

So for a 2046-era WP user, perhaps not even born yet, who hears mention that the President of the United States once decided it was a good idea to arbitrarily rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, I want that future WP user to be able to learn the details of the incident with minimal searching. Perhaps do this in conjunction with making a disambig page along the lines of what Enos733 mentions above. KConWiki (talk) 00:14, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Reluctant keep - as indicated above, individuals will search this term and should learn about Lake Ontario. With that being said, there is already a Lake America in the US which could be a strong candidate for this redirect target. --Tawker (talk) 00:51, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Disambiguate: There's already a Lake America in Dakota, and not everything is about Trump, and a lot of people still commonly refer that Great Lake as Lake Ontario. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 02:37, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

The lake is a natural geographic feature - which in itself is enough to make an article about it. Besides, look at the articles in List of lakes of South Dakota - most of them are less well-written than the article about Lake America. Szturnek¿odp? 16:10, 1 September 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep, we did the same for Gulf of Mexico/America so we should do the same here (Also the Mount McKinley situation). Like others have said we *could* retarget to a subheading about the naming dispute, but I think it should go to the Lake Ontario article. Redirects are also cheap, so if one (in this case huge) country is calling something one name and a different country is calling it another name, we should have a redirect to the other. As for the Lake America in Dakota, I am assuming that one is really small, we could do that thing under the title where it says "Did you mean..." some other article. I forget what it is actually called. I especially agree with User:Here for the one billionth edit above where they say disliking someone or finding something offensive is NOT a good reason to delete a redirect. Wikipedia is not censored and is unbiased. If Canada, for some reason (<0.1% chance), renames Lake Ontario to Lake America then obv we should move the page to Lake America. As for pointing it to American expansionism under Donald Trump I don't support that at all. There is no precedent for it and that seems like a odd place it to end up. Imagine someone who knows nothing sees "Lake America" on a sign and types that into the search box and gets an article about nothing to do with a lake. We can put a link to said article in the lake Ontario article. Jake01756 (talk) (contribs) 04:33, 1 September 2026 (UTC)
For the record, Gulf of America doesn't redirect to Gulf of Mexico. If you're looking for consistency, retargeting to Lake Ontario naming dispute should sit right with you, I hope. --Diriector_Doc├─────┤TalkContribs 05:25, 1 September 2026 (UTC)

But, instead of redirecting the page on Lake Ontario here, the page should summarize the political situation and the disagreement between the two relevant nations. This would be informative. • Keep. Probably a significant majority of people using this redirect will be Trump fans wanting to look up the lake, with a sizeable number of Trump-neutral or Trump opponents interested in learning about the name change decree. This is basically the same situation as "Gulf of America", which is mentioned in Gulf of Mexico#Name; the incident ought to be mentioned in Lake Ontario if it isn't already. Regardless of the South Dakota lake's existence, I strongly doubt that most readers will know about it; it's five hectares in the middle of sparsely populated farm country, and judging by Google Maps, it's probably not even visible from the closest road, since the road's 500 metres away, and the lake is surrounded by trees. Probably most local residents haven't heard of it. Nyttend (talk) 07:56, 3 September 2026 (UTC)

Not mentioned at target. The creator originally redirected this to Taxi wars in South Africa but this isn't mentioned there either. According to wikt:teksi, Swahili and Malay borrowed the English "taxi" as teksi to mean "taxi". I can't find any reference in articles using "teksi" in an East African context, but Taxis of Malaysia does mention it. Malaysia is also an English-speaking country, but I have no idea if "teksi" is used in Malaysian English or only in Malaysian Malay. I don't think this is a plausible typo for Taxi outside of these languages in English. This is a tricky one for WP:FORRED. Fork99 (talk) 10:55, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

This redirect refers to Kladivo na čarodějnice, which is Czech for Witchhammer, a 1970 Czech film. However, Kladivo na čarodějnice (Czech for The Witches' Hammer) is about a 1963 novel. I will note the film gets significantly more pageviews than the novel. Then again, this redirect and the title of the novel only differ by diacritics, but this redirect has targeted the film for about 16 years and has received hundreds of pageviews without previous objections to this redirect, and there may be a case to move the article about the novel to Kladivo na čarodějnice (novel) (which was the previous title of the article about the novel) and turning "Kladivo na čarodějnice" into a disambiguation page. Whether the title with diacritics should be the title of the novel article (I am agnostic) is in my view best left to RM. J947 ‡ edits 00:45, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
  • Mm, yeah, I may not have thought this all the way through. But it looks like it would make more sense to move the novel article to Kladivo na čarodějnice (novel) and have both forms point to the film. --BDD (talk) 00:55, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
