MOS:OVERCITE

- MOS:OVERCITE → Wikipedia:Citation overkill (talk · links · history · stats) [ Closure: keep/retarget/delete ]
Despite this being a "MOS:" shortcut link, it does not lead to a Manual of Style subpage, nor any editing guideline; rather, it leads to an essay about citations, which may come off as misleading to other readers. In addition, the Manual of Style doesn't appear to cover this concept, so I would suggest deleting the redirect. Since WP:OVERCITE already exists as a valid shortcut link, deleting it MOS:OVERCITE should not cause any problems. LazyLune (talk • edits) 23:20, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Delete the MOS:OVERCITE redirect to this essay, but keep WP:OVERCITE. Reasons: (1) MOS-namespace links give the impression it is an official MOS guideline; whereas WP-namespace links are understood to include non-binding essays. (2) There is an opposing essay named WP:UNDERCITE (aka WP:Citation underkill) which does not have a matching MOS redirect. (3) The essay WP:OVERCITE contains some questionable guidance that is frequently abused, resulting in removal of good quality citations (and sources) from articles. The essay has some germs of good advice, but it often used in a heavy-handed manner. The "MOS" seal-of-approval should not be associated with this essay. Noleander (talk) 23:54, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Comment. Fairly indifferent on this one, but if it is deleted, there are a handful of incoming links that should be updated in that case. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 23:58, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Question Do we know how many MOS-namespace redirects link to essays? If the answer is, say, "under 5" that is an indication that MOS-namespace should not be used to link to essays, and perhaps all five could be deleted (after proper notification). On the other hand, if there are dozens of MOS redirects to essays, maybe a broader discussion (RfC?) should be used to determine if they should be prohibited. Noleander (talk) 00:04, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not sure whether those types of redirects are common or not. I happened to found this one while I was viewing Wikipedia:Citation overkill. To my knowledge, "MOS" shortcut links should only be redirected to Manual of Style subpages or guideline pages to prevent them from being misleading. As for having a broader discussion, I would be in support of that, if that were ever to take place. LazyLune (talk • edits) 00:42, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Agreeing with Noleander on this one. A bit of research may be necessary. That said, it's only had 71 pageviews in the past year, so probably not the end of the world. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 01:36, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Comment: @Noleander: @Deacon Vorbis: For clarity, I was using the shortcut link as a reason to delete "MOS:OVERCITE", not "WP:OVERCITE". LazyLune (talk • edits) 00:10, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Delete per LazyLune and Noleander. Redirects in the MOS namespace to essays can mislead editors into thinking those pages are actual guidelines or otherwise more accepted than they really are. This is undesirable. Chess enjoyer (talk) 09:30, 26 September 2026 (UTC)

The subject is not mentioned at the target. The only mention of the name "Bernard B. Jacobs" at the target page is actually for the theater named after him. Epicgenius (talk) 21:00, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Retarget to Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Signahistar (talk) 11:27, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support Retarget - 13 years later! If I recall correctly, the redirect made the most sense at the time because of Jacob's sizable role in the modern manifestation of the SO as it exists today. Looking at that page, it definitely needs some attention (which should include more information on Jacobs' tenure as head of the company). For now, the redirect to his namesake theater seems appropriate. Mistamystery (talk) 23:20, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

Highly implausible search redirect, 'typo' or misnomer. No one is going to search up 'ЯЕD SQЦАЯЕ' to look for Red Square. In solidarity, Kristi ☎️ 19:06, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Delete, WP:R#D8. This had an odd period of elevated traffic from 2021-2023. Not sure why, but it was probably linked somewhere, maybe as a joke that didn't get caught and reverted until January 2024. Either way, I doubt this is actually helpful to anyone. Jokes aren't within the scope of the purpose of redirects. – Scyrme (talk/solidarity) 19:27, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Delete per above. "JAJED SQCAJAJE" does not mean anything in any language and no affinity to all caps, RED SQUARE does not exist. Unless there's any evidence this stylisation is used anywhere. Fork99 (talk) 21:21, 17 September 2026 (UTC)

- Retarget back to Big West Conference, which is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. -- Tavix (talk) 16:23, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Retarget to Big West Conference. From what I can glean from the current target (which isn't much), the full name is Big West Advertising, not just "Big West", so there's no SMALLDETAILS case either way. So on the one hand, we have a dedicated, lengthy article on the sports conference (which is likely much more primary anyway), versus an article about a media franchise with a few brief mentions about its owner/sponsor/???, which as pointed out in the nomination, has other properties besides this. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 00:48, 18 September 2026 (UTC)

The target is not synonymous with the redirect. For one, the characters in Yoshi (video game series) are fundamentally different, including different villains and enemies that are not present in the Mario series. Also, I am not finding any clear target that is a subtopic of Yoshi (video game series) to target this, meaning readers will not find what they were looking for on Wikipedia at the present time. Fictional textbook fairly significant to the plot of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but is not mentioned anywhere on Wikipedia. This was a 3.5 line unsourced stub created in July 2005 and BLARed in November 2005. I have repaired the attribution from a merge to Hogwarts subjects via a dummy edit attributing the creator and the second revision by a different user. All other edits in between this and it being BLARed only added categories, links, a stub template, a merge template, changed templates and removed a word, so I haven't attributed them. I also have no idea why this was conflated as being a course/class/subject offered at Hogwarts in the pre-BLAR content. Delete. Fork99 (talk) 10:39, 17 September 2026 (UTC)

I suppose these could now target List of wars: 2020–present, but as with #List of armed conflicts in 2021, there are also wars that began before 2020 and are either still ongoing (List of ongoing armed conflicts) or ended recently. 1234qwer1234qwer4 15:04, 21 August 2026 (UTC)
- Retarget list of modern wars to Modern warfare#Modern wars. There is broad debate about what constitutes modern warfare; there is no concise and broadly agreed definition, but most scholars define it using technological or tactical criteria rather than by a specific timeframe, and most go back to WWII if not WWI. Regarding the lists of recent wars, the word "recent" is ambiguous; I suggest disambiguate and list at least the last three decades. Carguychris (talk) 21:45, 21 August 2026 (UTC)

refers to the act of turning non-solid stuff into solid stuff (i could never have guessed!). freezing is one method of doing it, and a plausible synonym for some other methods, but far from the only one for either case. thus, considering incoming links, those might be better off soft redirected to wikt:solidization or retargeted to solidify

For those who don't know the name there was once a bespoke speedy deletion criterion (WP:X1) for the many thousands of frivolous redirects he created. Grammatical variations of words like this were common among them. Even though that cleanup work was declared complete years ago, I still look upon the remnants with great skepticism. --BDD (talk) 14:52, 17 September 2026 (UTC)

"C7m"
by itself are dominated by pages about an MSI laptop. When searched with music-related keywords ('chord', 'guitar', 'jazz') I was able to find many examples ofC7M
(major chord), which in the pages I saw was contrasted with Cm7 (minor chord). I don't agree that the online references to it are mistaken. It seems just be an informal conventional among jazz musicians, probably to more clearly differentiate the abbreviations by sight. Examples also appear in Google Scholar and Google Books results so evidently it also appears in publications not just online. The same convention is used for other chord,E7M
,D7M
, etc. A lot of the Google Scholar results were in Portuguese or mentioned Brazil, so this convention may be more common there. I don't think treating this redirect as a synonym forC7M
is appropriate; the music-related pages I saw consistently used a capital M (WP:SMALLDETAILS), and music doesn't dominate the search results so I don't think we can assume what readers would be searching for here. – Scyrme (talk/solidarity) 20:55, 22 September 2026 (UTC) - From the nomination statement, I misunderstood that this is some kind of Wikipedia jargon, but I don't find it used within meta space as well. - Delete – Too ambiguous, and not a framing of a subject that currently exists. There are no reliable sources suggesting that "Backrooms characters" is a defined group that is specific to the film or to the web series. Linking to one or the other would imply that that's the list of characters, so to speak. A cast happens to function as a list of characters, but that's not its intended function here. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 11:21, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- delete as extremely vague even from the title. no list seems to have existed, and what can be defined as "a character" in the "backrooms" is subject to a lot of possible interpretations that all veer into fancruft territory, the least crufty being "are we talking about the backrooms themselves or media related to them in general?", with "do we include the reddit thread about the throngler and scrindonguloder?" at the cruftiest end, and "what about the poolrooms?" somewhere in between
- if a list does end up existing eventually, it'll obviously require a disambiguator to match the thing it's a list of characters of, so this will serve no purpose then either consarn (talk beige) (count ribs) 17:53, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Keep there is currently a list being worked on at Draft: List of Backrooms characters. The franchise is expanding and there will be need for a list. Redirect is mostly a place holder while the draft is being finished. I don’t want someone to start a list in the mainspace, when there is already a draft in draft space. That’s what happened with the article Kane Parsons. There was already a draft that preceded it called Draft:Kane Pixels, but someone later made the current version in mainspace without checking draftspace first. Then the draft was useless after that and turned into a redirect. I don’t want a repeat of that. There are also reliable secondary sources available for the characters in the film and web series, I will add those later. There is no harm in keeping the redirect. Leave redirect as is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Red Vortex (talk • contribs) 15:16, 22 September 2026 (UTC)
- there actually is harm in keeping the redirect in this case. in the context of mainspace, it implies a list where there is none (and is vague per my comment above), and outside of it, can just be replaced by the draft if it's accepted (which admittedly isn't too likely in its current state, as it seems it's being written backwards). a rushed or otherwise improper creation in mainspace can just be reverted consarn (talk beige) (count ribs) 21:01, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- In general a redirect should not be a promise of content-yet-to-come, but help readers find content present in articles. ScalarFactor (talk) 05:15, 25 September 2026 (UTC)
- Delete per all. The keep placeholder argument is unfounded. The Kane Parsons page too was a redirect, which preceded the draft. It was turned from redirect to article, and the same can happen to the List of Backrooms characters redirect. Similarly, multiple editors can create their own drafts about the same topic (although not ideal, and collaborative is best), and the one that is accepted first, is promoted as article.
