Wikipedia:Requests for page importation
noticeboard where Wikipedia users can request that a page history be imported
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a place to request that pages be imported with history of pages from other Wikimedia Foundation wikis to here. This might be done if a page was copied and pasted from a WMF wiki to here, or, in the case of the Nostalgia Wikipedia, to make very old revisions accessible. Administrators can import pages from Meta, Commons, the Outreach Wiki, the Test2 Wikipedia site, and the German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, and Nostalgia Wikipedias to the English Wikipedia (see Phabricator task 22280 for relevant shell permission requests, and to request permissions for importing from more projects). It is also possible to indirectly perform a transwiki import from other projects by using step-wise process through a third project that has a project mapping already created, although using the export/import process may be simpler.
- Guidelines for admins

Check the history of the source page before importing. If there are overlapping edits between the source and destination page, import the edits into the MediaWiki talk namespace, since it is very rarely used. Follow this procedure, where "foo" is the title of the page in the English Wikipedia and "bar" is the title of the source page:
- Import "bar". When asked for the namespace, select "MediaWiki talk".
- Move "foo" to "MediaWiki talk:bar". When asked whether you want to delete the page, answer yes.
- From the "move succeeded" window, there is a link to the page history at "MediaWiki talk:bar". Activate it, perhaps in another tab or window, and there will be some text in the form "View or restore xxx deleted edits?". Activate the link associated with that text and undelete the imported edits that you need. The remaining edits will stay safely deleted in the MediaWiki talk namespace.
- Revert the move you made in step two. Uncheck the box that says "Leave a redirect behind", since redirects from the MediaWiki talk namespace are useless. If you want, you can use the "revert" link in the "move succeeded" window. The page move should go without a hitch.
The same procedure can be used when there are no overlapping edits, but in this case, it's best to move the page first, so the import appears in the page history.
In general, do not use the "assign edits to local users where the named user exists locally", leaving this off will indicate in the history the project the edits came from and you won't have to worry about non-created accounts here.
See User:Graham87/Import for guidelines on importing from the Nostalgia Wikipedia. There is a log of all page imports at Special:Log/import.

- Language: fr:Queen's Dubonnet
- New name: User:Godsy/Queen's Dubonnet
- Note: Planning to take a crack at translating this in my userspace. Thanks, — Godsy (TALKCONT) 06:19, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

Import of de:Distrikt Scheikān to Sheikan locality
- Language: de:Distrikt Scheikān
- New name: Sheikan locality
- Note: --Lupe (talk) 18:59, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
- Note by importing user: Not done; we already have an article about this topic at Sheikan District. If you would like to translate the German page, please do so by adding the text there with an edit summary linking to the original German version, per this guideline. Graham87 (talk) 01:47, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- No, that article is adifferent topic. So I can't add it there. Lupe (talk) 06:43, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- See North Kordofan. Lupe (talk) 06:43, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- I will remove the Wikidata link, I guees that is where the confusion comes from. Lupe (talk) 06:45, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Lupe: Yes, I got that impression from the Wikidata link. Would you like it imported in to your userspace then? We can't import non-English text straight in to the article namespace. Other people with transwiki importation abilities, feel free to take over this request if a response comes in when I'm not online. Graham87 (talk) 13:53, 18 July 2026 (UTC)

Import of it:Riva (cantiere navale) to User:CateSof1453!/Riva (yacht manufacturer)
- Language: it:Riva (cantiere navale)
- New name: User:CateSof1453!/Riva (yacht manufacturer)
- Note: Thanks! --CateSof1453! (talk) 09:05, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- Note by importing user: Not done; it's part of the Ferretti Group, about which you have declared a conflict of interest. Please use the regular procedure for attributing translated articles, rather than page importation. Graham87 (talk) 15:02, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
Import of de:Irene und Paul Hellmann to Irene and Paul Hellmann

Import of meta:What is a troll? to Wikipedia:Trolling
- Language: meta:What is a troll?
- New name: Wikipedia:Trolling
- Note: This was exported to meta about 18 years ago (local/meta). We maintain at least 14 + 1 soft redirects to it (many are (recently converted) technically hard redirects to a soft redirect base page)! This far, far more than the vast majority of soft redirects to sister sites. Furthermore it is less technical in nature than most meta-redirects and actually partially revolves around local essays etc. (the vast majority of link therein are to our proyectspace or mainspace; Wikipedia:Deny recognition is especially related). This base page of sorts should really be local. An alternative title of the {{Copy to Meta}} template was slapped on with this edit (by a sockpuppet—perhaps as a troll funnily enough), despite the page surviving Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:What is a troll?. It is high time that we brought this informational essay home.
- Talk:Trolling (it has been pre-prepared with a swap from Wikipedia:What is a troll?) should be maintained as is; meta:Talk:What is a troll? could be imported to Talk:Trolling/Meta as an archive of sorts if desired. Wikipedia:What is a troll? (and Wikipedia:What is a troll) will be maintained as soft redirects to meta, while the rest of the aforementioned redirects would likely be retargeted to the restored local page. On a final note, the substantial history that was at Wikipedia:Trolling has been preserved at WP:TROLLING though a page swap. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 00:05, 14 October 2026 (UTC)
- Note by importing user:
- I am somewhat okay with this in theory, but I'm also not really sure it's a great idea in practice to be moving it back from Meta, especially not with the messing with the page histories that would emerge from this. EggRoll97 (talk) 03:22, 14 October 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah same. We have Wikipedia:Disruptive editing here. This is a similar situation to Wikipedia:Don't be a jerk (formerly "don't be a dick"). I'd prefer to get wider consensus for this. Graham87 (talk) 05:41, 14 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Graham87: I do not really have a local page to list at MfD and its a bit niche for the hassle of a whole RfC... How about I list Wikipedia:Trolling with a similar rationale to what I wrote above and a suggested action of import for discussion at RfD to see where the consensus stands? — Godsy (TALKCONT) 07:13, 14 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Godsy: Maybe? But it's a bit unconventional for RFD too. I was thinking of just a regular village pump discussion, not necessarily an RFC. But I just think it'd be easier for everyone if things were just left as they are. Graham87 (talk) 09:01, 14 October 2026 (UTC)
- I am currently trawling through projectspace soft redirects. I will keep that in mind and ponder if such a discussion is indeed warranted while I finish that endeavor up (unsure how long it will take—also unsure if I will still feel that this is such a unique case at the end). Thanks, — Godsy (TALKCONT) 11:28, 14 October 2026 (UTC)
