  • Strong Keep It is embarassing for both Wikipedia and Cricket that this is even a debate. All squads of all editions should have been kept, but the ICC CT is subjected to different adverse treatment because editors here dont deem a functioning and well recognised tournament properly owing to it not having "World Cup" in its name.

@Vestrian24Bio: I don't see that consensus on the WikiProject at all: it would have been better to let someone else close that discussion, since you were WP:INVOLVED. StAnselm (talk) 21:09, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

forked citation modules

These modules are forks of the original Module:Cite web intended to be used when an article approaches or has exceeded the WP:Post-expand include size limit. These forks can now be replaced with calls to Module:Cite.—Trappist the monk (talk) 14:47, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

    what is lost? What do you mean by that? Nothing is lost. When given the same input parameters, a {{cite book|...}} template converted to {{#invoke:cite|cite|book|...}} produces the same output. Or do mean sommat else? If so, what?

  • Delete once Module:Cite is updated to use simpler syntax. Replacing {{cite web}} with {{#invoke:cite web||}} is more straighforward and results in cleaner-looking wikitext than {{#invoke:cite|cite|web}}. I would support this only if we could modify Module:Cite so that it could be invoked via {{#invoke:cite|web}} or {{#invoke:cite|book}} rather than {{#invoke:cite|cite|web}} or {{#invoke:cite|cite|book}}. --Ahecht (TALK

    That is an interesting idea. What I don't like about it is its error handling; there is none – unless strong shrill-shrieking script error messaging and communal Category:Pages with script errors categorization counts as error handling. Are we ok with that sort of error handling?
    Also, the citation classes should not be made into callable functions; that is not their purpose. Single letter variable names? Really? In the current century? I've fixed these.

    @Trappist the monk Thanks for the updates. The sandbox was more a proof of concept. I've completely rewritten the EXPORTS portion to use metatables instead of generating individual functions, so the error handling should be exactly the same as in your version. --Ahecht (TALK

    I have never been able to wrap my brain around metatables. I have no idea how what you wrote works; it apparently does, but to me, how it works is a mystery. Where does the function index() get its value for template?
    Despite my inability to understand the newer code, I do like that error messaging is less strident, so thanks for that. I'll spend some time cleaning up the sandbox then (assuming that this TfD closes in the affirmative) it should be ready to go, right?

    @Trappist the monk Should be ready to go. When you call a table with a key that doesn't exist (e.g. t[key]) it returns __index from the metatable (if it exists). If __index is a function, it returns the value of that function as if it were called with index(t, key). In this case, if you call the module with {{#invoke:cite|foo|...}}, it tries to access p['foo'](frame), fails, and instead returns index(p, 'foo')(frame) which in turns returns the anonymous function and passes the frame to it. --Ahecht (TALK

  • I think this nomination makes sense, delete. I prefer end wikitext similar to Ahecht's suggestion and the way it's done there is pretty elegant (though I worry slightly about the loss of the encapsulation by naming the classes or whatever in the final wikitext rather than in the containing templates).     I don't understand what you mean by loss of the encapsulation by naming the classes or whatever in the final wikitext. In my view of the world, the classes are not used as aliases of template names, are not visible in article wikitext, and are confined to Module:Cite and Module:Cite/config or their sandboxen. In real cs1|2 templates, the classes are similarly confined to the Module:Citation/CS1 #invoke in the template so they too, are never seen in article wikitext. Explain me what you mean by loss of the encapsulation?

Keep. Thanks for reminding me that these exist. I'd really prefer that these two sets not be deleted. They're my attempts at generalizing from related templates.
