Precedent established for deleting inaugural/first season roster navboxes as banner-hanging template creep, per Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2026 January 27#NFL first season roster navboxes. These two Canadian Football League navboxes don't provide notable navigational purposes, and the rosters would be best suited for these teams' seasons' articles (here and here.) Per WP:Leadsidebar, we don't need a sidebar for every topic and we have redundancy when we have Template:COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories, a navbox doing the same thing. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:47, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

How is this per WP:Leadsidebar? That's about sidebar placement, not whether they should exist, no?
I personally think the sidebar is useful given how many related articles there are on this topic you might want to quickly navigate between without scrolling to the bottom of content, but then I have bias. BlackholeWA (talk) 00:27, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
"The placement of a sidebar in the lead is generally discouraged." It is being used in that way as such. But its placement still makes it redundant. When the navbox is already covering ground for article linking, it does not mean a sidebar is required or needed at all. Scrolling to the bottom is hardly an issue. I do not see any evidence that going to the bottom of the page is such an issue for readers or editors that makes sidebars almost a necessity. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:02, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
Delete. Sidebars are much more intrusive as can be seen by the fact that this template isn't on every page it links to. Template:COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories should be used instead. Gonnym (talk) 10:54, 4 February 2026 (UTC)

I'm still not convinced that the WP:Leadsidebar rationale actually means what the nom seems to regard it as meaning; that is to say they seem to be regarding it as advice against including a sidebar at all, in general, rather than placement guidelines for an existing sidebar. This sidebar duplicates the history section of Template:Toronto, and is serving mostly as a decoration rather than a navigational aid. As with Template:History of Ottawa, there is no need to convert this into a separate navbox, it can be safely deleted. MediaKyle (talk) 16:17, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

  • Keep. I question this. This is one of those delete discussions 'because we can'. There isn't a problem here. It is an attractive sidebar useful as a series navbox. I would modify its use as such, i.e. use only on the pertinent articles. If it is overused, than those link instances can be removed. We could review the huge number of history links in Template:Toronto as to their usefulness instead. Alaney2k (talk) 17:41, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

    • I think the large amount of history links, among others in the Toronto navbox are what are not needed. Far too detailed. The sidebar directs you to major Toronto history events. Alaney2k (talk) 18:22, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
    @Alaney2k there is a problem here -- sidebars are on their way out. There's some good reading on the topic at User:Nederlandse Leeuw/Culture sidebars which explains why we don't want these. I'm not totally opposed to converting this into a separate navbox if so desired, but it should not stay as a sidebar... Consensus is clear that sidebars are not ideal. Delete. The list of links seems arbitrary (why wasn't 1918 Toronto anti-Greek riot included?). Sidebars by design are limited in the amount of data they can show as they already take previous space from the actual content of the page for what is basically a "see also" list of links. No, one points out to the articles on subdivisions like Kaluga Oblast, another one to the articles on their administrative divisions such as Administrative divisions of Kaluga Oblast.     It's not other-stuff, but a consistent metric by which I think all entries of the same topic should be judged. I don't think that because of some biased we have, that a women's cycling team should get its navigation template deleted, but {{Manchester United F.C. squad}} should be kept.
