- Template:China topics (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Propose merging Template:Politics of China navbox with Template:China topics.
Another unnecessary navbox. All articles here belong on the main China navbox. We have a massive amount of Politics in country sidebars. There is no need for a navbox for this particular subject. All functions can easily be handled by the main country navbox. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:09, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Why would we go out of our way to make the template less accessible? WP:NAVBOX. Let's make sure we're doing what's best for our readers to navigate specific topics over busy work on the backend. Moxy🍁 23:23, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Per WP:NENAN. Every subject does not need a navbox. By this logic History of China, and Geography of China need their own navboxes. They don't. Too many templates are being created or have been for every purpose. It creates redundancy. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 23:44, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- That is correct long time ago editors separated this out as per WP:NAVBOX (the part related to size and focus), thus grouping articles per subtopics and not a giant template with every possible link. {{Canada topics}}, {{Canada Geography}}, {{History of Canada navbox}}. Right now you're on a path of merging thousands of templates to the detriment of accessibility as outlined in our guideline. Moxy🍁 23:57, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- "Right now you're on a path of merging thousands of templates to the detriment of accessibility as outlined in our guideline." Now you're assuming bad faith. Its not thousand of templates. If you were aware of recent nominations of late by other editors, you would know there has been growing consensus to eliminate a gluttony of sidebars created for nearly every single subject you can think of. Especially for subject that don't warrant one. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:05, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- it's funny we're not discussing sidebars right now... but since you brought it up... there has been an alternate solution exactly related to these country topic templates.... that also doesn't make these existing country topic templates too big, giving undue weight to on topic or unfocused. Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2025_November_6#Culture_sidebars_part_10. I just don't see how having a template with hundreds of links is helpful... or focused in anyway. Moxy🍁 00:16, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Right, but it doesn't mean they need to be navboxes in their own right. Navboxes like sidebars prior to the nominations of late have to well-defined. If we remove the Politics section from the main China navbox and not include the articles of direct relevance then it removes the clearly defined purpose of a navbox like this. China topics includes main subjects of the country. Politics of China do belong on this main navbox. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:40, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

Per precedent of two previous nominations of other covid data case templates from October 2024 and my previous nomination on December 2025.
These COVID data template pages have either no transclusions or a few and are all or mostly:
1) out of date 2) In violation of WP:NOTDATABASE 3) In Violation of WP:NOTSTATS
These templates appear to contain what is normally article content, and they are linked from the "Data" section of COVID-19 pandemic navbox, which violates our guidelines on linking from article space to other namespaces including from templates. The transclusions coming from the navbox add more than what appears to be direct transclusions with use of a template.
If any are single-use, i.e. being used only on one article, I would argue against subst and delete due to the outdated chart is no longer going to serve any purpose.
Five years ago, they were useful to have. Now, five years later, we don't have a need for these anymore. Delete and remove transclusions.
Most editors are no longer editing this information as Covid cases and deaths are not as significant anymore to keep a tally of and the world is not in a state of pandemic anymore. We just no longer have a need for these. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:36, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- I have been receiving a lot of these notifications in my talk page as of late, but once again, my stance is also delete per nom. I think making them up to date into 2025 is impossible. A cleanup is a necessity. MarioJump83 (talk) 17:16, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Keep (or else archive or redirect to the corresponding mainspace pages). Same arguments as at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2026 January 24#Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/Albania medical cases chart – historically significant crowdsourced dataset of better quality than the WHO curated dataset. An encyclopedia is not just for what's happening now. Boud (talk) 18:51, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Keep, I would encourage to move that to Commons' Data namespace, datasets with graphs now go there. There are already examples c:Category:Tabular_data_of_COVID-19_cases.
- For Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/Mainland China medical cases chart -> Strong keep, this one is used in a wikipage and is a cornerpiece of the whole pandemic since it showcase the early explosion and escape from Wuhan 2020.01-02. Yug (talk) 🐲 21:43, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Usage on an page is not a reason to keep. Plenty of templates get nominated even if used on a page. If we move the data to commons, then these template still have no reason to be kept on Wikipedia itself. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:55, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- If the data itself is moved to commons, of course there is reason to keep the medical cases charts at least. They are a good way to convey information. Otherwise, we might as well remove all images from Wikipedia and just keep text. Alexis Coutinho (talk) 14:53, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Delete any graph based template such as Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/Bangladesh-daily-positivity-rates if it can't be converted. I strongly oppose moving graph base templates to any namespace, user or otherwise. Gonnym (talk) 18:58, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Strong Keep, of time-truncated copies. I maintain that Covid is an event of historic and not merely historical significance, so data is warranted to be kept.
- Perfect shan't be the enemy of good. It is perfectly reasonable to keep a chart copy of the first year or few years or so, up until a cutoff point (e.g. for China, shortly after the announcement of the end of zero-covid).
- Sure, perhaps nobody cares how many cases China or South Korea or Italy has on this present day. But to say virtually nobody cares about how many cases China or South Korea or Italy had by the day in February 2020 is a severe understatement that I'm willing to bet significant fortune against. Rethliopuks (talk) 10:56, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Agree and I wish to be able to eventually apply this understanding to all previously deleted templates. Alexis Coutinho (talk) 14:58, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Delete per nominator's rationale, page usage is not a reason to keep! That’s not what templates are for FaviFake (talk) 15:25, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Keep Even though I disagree with constantly updating these in 2026, I’m sure these templates will still be valuable for the historical record, especially 20 to 50 years from now. Somerset999 (talk) 02:08, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
- delete per nom, but no objection to migration to Template:Chart or moving "medical cases"-based templates to userspace. Frietjes (talk) 16:25, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Userfy as safety net. I agree with other users that all raw data should be moved to commons and that we should only keep the visualization templates (e.g. medical cases charts) truncated up to a certain point. However, I'm unwilling to do this migration now or anytime soon. Therefore, I would like to userfy such templates with raw data as a safety net so that I or any other user has the chance migrate and 'properly fix' the charts in the (long) meantime.
- I took a look at a graph-based template, and it doesn't seem to contain raw data (case, death counts...), only x and y values. Since you talk about them more Gonnym, could you confirm if other graph-based templates also only have graphic data/floats? If yes, then I support deleting graph-based templates without userfication. Alexis Coutinho (talk) 15:17, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Delete or userfy per the suggestions above for this discussion. Many or all of these are outdated and simply left alone and not being used by users for information purposes. If the user above wants to keep in their userspace, then they can. There should be no objection to it since these are not really kept up to date and Wikipedia is not a machine to crunch numbers into a system to keep things updated. Plenty of websites are keeping daily tabs on Covid for six years now and all of that information is just fluff and really no longer relevant to public affairs or daily events anymore. And there is no place for these templates now as there was once six years ago. --~2026-13909-16 (talk) 21:16, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- Delete No longer useful anymore. Userfication can take place as long as templates are no longer in template space anymore. --~2026-15946-40 (talk) 02:30, 15 March 2026 (UTC)

Courtesy pings: Chaotic Enby, EurekaLott, Maiō T., Phil Bridger, The Transhumanist as participants in the VPPR discussion. FaviFake (talk) 13:22, 25 January 2026 (UTC)- Thank you, FaviFake. I was a bit confused yesterday. Of course, this discussion belongs here.
- And now to the point. We could also consider another option: Modifying the output of the {{Category more}} template to include some words about categories, or so. Because now it really looks like two almost identical templates. Maiō T. (talk) 13:43, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- What text would you add? Gonnym (talk) 15:26, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- If we want this template to match {{category main article}} and {{category explanation}}, it could begin with something like: For more information about this category, see... - Eureka Lott 15:54, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Yes Eureka Lott, this is a good suggestion. The word "category" simply needs to be put in that template output to distinguish it from the {{Further}} template. Maiō T. (talk) 16:35, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- But is it actually more information about the category? Category:Soundgarden links to Soundgarden, so probably needs to use {{Category main article}} (as do a lot of pages). Category:Bridges in Sydney links to Sydney, but what "more information about this category [Bridges in Sydney]" would this give? Or more specifically, what does that language offer that "Further information" does not? Gonnym (talk) 17:02, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- There are categories that have main topics but aren't good candidates for using {{category main article}}. The example I used in the village pump discussion was Category:Hip-hop albums. Using {{category main article}} wouldn't be appropriate there, since Hip-hop is the main article of Category:Hip-hop. - Eureka Lott 17:13, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- I got an idea! That output could look something like this: For more information, see article {{{1}}} and category {{{1}}}. ;-) Maiō T. (talk) 17:47, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- I don't know what that would accomplish. What category would you add to the template for a page like Category:Presidents of Surrey County Cricket Club? - Eureka Lott 18:54, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Eureka Lott: This particular category you write about is a great example of what I would like to do. It already contains the following code:
{{catmore|Surrey County Cricket Club}}So it would link to this article: Surrey County Cricket Club and to this category: Surrey County Cricket Club.Maiō T. (talk) 19:18, 25 January 2026 (UTC)- What would be the advantage compared to having Surrey County Cricket Club as a parent category, which it presumably already is? I believe the intrusive nature of this sometimes appearing multiple times within one article may result in "exopedians" just voting "No's as a result of coming here upset about article disruption and not actually reading the proposal. This can be suppressed from article view - if others think this is best... but do we have a setting so the notice appears only once in an article? Moxy🍁 20:19, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

keep as is : further is actually the more formal version, so it is strange to replace further with "more" on an encyclopedia.merge per discussion Drew Stanley (talk) 21:24, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
I came to this discussion from Pump organ#Indian harmonium - in general, "further" is likely favored by Indian and British English- Support - I don't see what any possible purpose that keeping these different wordings would serve. BappleBusiness[talk] 21:35, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

I don't understand why some people are confused by the direction? FaviFake (talk) 17:21, 26 January 2026 (UTC)proposed redirecting {{Category more}} to {{Further}}

- Merge and add functions to the combined template that detect when it's used in Category namespace. I've been meaning to add tracking categories for errors to this template. I'd also support changing the wording of the hatnote to better match other hatnotes. Mclay1 (talk) 00:06, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Merge and script if there is a need to track something about categories or if different wording is needed - per what Mclay1 said. --Komonzia (talk) 04:08, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Use one, probably {{Further}}. Nothing to merge. Both link to a related article (not a category) about a topic, with the category one not using Module:Labelled list hatnote but does the same styling so it should. Since there isn't any difference between them, and the namespace doesn't affect anything here, then there isn't any reason not to use a single template. Gonnym (talk) 11:34, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Merge/redirect to {{Further}} per discussion. Est. 2021 (talk · contribs) 00:22, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Keep It says 12,6000 pages use this. But I know a lot of categories that for pro wrestling championships do. Many pro wrestling championships have separate articles for the history of a championship and for a list of title reigns ala the WWE Championship. - Delete both per nominator's rationale. FaviFake (talk) 13:51, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Delete both. Every single discussion on en.wiki that is on an article talk page or project page should be relevant to the topic per WP:NOTAFORUM. The outlier is that April fool's crap. As such, these two templates are completely unnecessary and just banner bloat (or just a backdoor way of yet again, adding April fool's content with that link). Gonnym (talk) 15:30, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Delete both per reasoning above. Cfls (talk) 21:43, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Delete both as creator I have no objection to the deletion of either template, especially given their low usage, and I apologize for how their creation came at a time when my participation in on-wiki April Fools festivities was less than ideal. Silcox (talk) 01:16, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- I will not object to Not April Fools getting G7'ed, since I am the only editor of that template; I will not put up the template myself lest I short-circuit this TfD but will not object to someone else putting up the template on my behalf. The Not Humor template would be a bit trickier to G7 (because there were other editors) but I will also not object to it getting G7'ed. Silcox (talk) 01:18, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

WikiCleanerMan (talk) 02:15, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
