Template:U.S. current election editnotice

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more templates or modules. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the template's talk page or in a deletion review).

The result of the discussion was no consensus on the editnotices themselves. It sounds like there might be some margin for updating/replacing the current templates with CTOPs but that decision is somewhat outwith this discussion. NPASR any or all of the templates if they are found to not be needed any more. Primefac (talk) 13:52, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

Every editnotice with the {{U.S. current election editnotice}} is for an article about a US election that is now past. Possibly the editnotice template itself should be deleted, since it was created shortly before the 2024 United States elections and used only once afterward, but if kept it should always have a marked expiry date shortly after the actual election finishes. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:51, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

I'm fine with deleting the past pagenotices, obviously. But the main template should be kept, since otherwise we'll need to create something new for 2026 (and especially 2028). Elli (talk | contribs) 23:21, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
Why not also have a similar one for all foreign elections? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 00:49, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

Keep The edit notices advertise the Contentious Topics restrictions which still apply, even though the election is past. Cabayi (talk) 14:17, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

  • I believe replacing {{U.S. current election editnotice}} with {{Contentious topics/editnotice|topic=ap}} on each of the individual editnotices is a good idea here to advertise the Contentious Topics restrictions which still apply, as Cabayi put it. Keep the template itself, since it has a reasonable likelihood of future use. Best, Staraction (talk · contribs) 06:38, 14 June 2026 (UTC)

Expired contentious topic editnotices

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more templates or modules. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the template's talk page or in a deletion review).

The result of the discussion was update with the appropriate CTOP per the discussion. Primefac (talk) 21:09, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

Each of these contains an expired, often for a sanction that has expired. Since this is an arbitration matter for most cases, WP:AN has been notified. Should the editnotices be renewed or updated, or simply deleted? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:19, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Delete the editnotice for United States Department of Defense. I added it, but that page has been quiet for months, now.
Donald Albury 22:42, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
Why not just change them to regular CTOP editnoticee? What's the point in deleting these? All of these articles are still covered by CTOPs. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:00, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Replace with {{contentious topics/page restriction editnotice}} with the correct topic for those that are covered by CTOPs per voorts, with liberal use of the |section= parameters as needed. Best, Staraction (talk · contribs) 06:41, 14 June 2026 (UTC)

Template:Editnotices/Page/Forest

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more templates or modules. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the template's talk page or in a deletion review).

The result of the discussion was no consensus. I have un-set the expiry, which might encourage editors to discuss the appropriateness of this editnotice. NPASR. Primefac (talk) 13:50, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

Expired in 2022. Is excessive images still an issue at Forest? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:26, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

I'm not sure an expiry should have been set (pinging Paine Ellsworth who set it) — the point of the {{overillustration risk editnotice}} is to indicate there's a risk of too many images, not that the article currently has too many images (in which case a maintenance tag, {{overillustrated}}, should be used instead of an editnotice), and that risk generally doesn't go away over time.
Five years out from adding that editnotice, though, I do think there is probably a better way to deal with the issue that isn't as likely to induce banner blindness. In particular, it'd be cool to set up an edit check that'd warn editors trying to add an image to an article at risk of overillustration. But until we have that, we might as well keep this around.

Yes. I don't do other people's work. If the template creator hasn't bothered using their creation, I'm not going to do the work required, which includes WP:Verifying, seeing if there is WP:Consensus to add it or it has a history of being removed, and in general be responsible for that edit. At the moment, any article that could theoretically be in this template are WP:TOOSOON. Most of the pages listed in it are redirects, redlinks, or pages that don't show any notability whatsoever. The category can definitely be recreated later, but it's WAAAYYY too early for the time being. Commandant Quacks-a-lot (talk) 20:41, 28 May 2026 (UTC)

  • Delete Hmm, I think a navbox for the various "Next election" articles are reasonable but adding them to a specific year navbox before we even know the year for certain seems like too soon. Trialpears (talk) 11:56, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

Similar to TM:Ignored and created by the same user. It's unclear how this would actually be used. Is it meant to mark one's own comment, and if so, where would it even be placed? Do you really need a template for this, or would it not be more straightforward to just spell it out. It feels like sort of a passive-aggressive way of trying to stop someone from engaging before they've even had the chance. I'd say this should just be deleted. Deacon Vorbis (carbon  videos) 00:35, 28 May 2026 (UTC)

Do you really need a template for this, or would it not be more straightforward to just spell it out. Isn't that true of nearly every existing discussion template? I created this because I could not find any existing discussion template that clarified that what you are saying need no response. I dispute the notion usage is unclear. Isn't it exceedingly clear? And just because you might use it in a way that discourages discussion does not mean others do. This can be used to lament a state of affairs, where starting a discussion would be counter productive, so using this template is the productive approach to take. By the way, how is it relevant that I have created another template? Please don't disparage your fellow editor. We have multitudes of discussion templates for very varied uses. Are no new such templates permitted? Are only templates created in the beginning of time allowed? CapnZapp (talk) 09:30, 28 May 2026 (UTC)
This template is intended for the cases where it isn't obvious enough. Our talk page templates does not need to be generally applicable, it is okay to have very specialized usage templates, and this isn't particularly specialized, it's just not always needed. CapnZapp (talk) 07:22, 29 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Delete As in the template {{ignored}} (also at TfD), I think this can only make things worse in a heated discussion. The icon, the boldface, it's all very passive-agressive. If you can write a comment clearly enough, you shouldn't need this. And a minor point: the icon doesn't really convey the "no need to reply" message. Pichpich (talk) 21:59, 29 May 2026 (UTC)
Delete - This template is argumentative at best and just invites confrontation. The single use of this template at present (by the creator of the template) does nothing other than try to shut down a conversation. Here at Wikipedia, we not only welcome responses, we are required to respond and take part in discussions. Now if you ask a rhetorical question and don't want to read someone's response that is your prerogative, but creating a template for the sole purpose of trying to shut down a conversation is just bad form and not something that should be encouraged.
I will also say that the fact that CapnZapp seems to feel personally attacked because 2 of their templates were nominated for deletion is concerning. All templates are subjection to the TFD process, at any time. Claiming that you are being disparaged because you don't like seeing your creations even discussed (which is what this is, Templates for DISCUSSION is bad form and is a clear case of not AGF.
