On this. I still think we should give special emphasis to winter sports during the first quarter in connection with the Winter Olympics and the St. Louis figure skating championship.--Ipigott (talk) 13:42, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

To Do

  • lots of things but I've set up the basics as no one is on the rota TheResilientEngineer (talk) 14:29, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
Calling regular helpers to get this over the line. I've set up the pages but will not have time to complete this. @Rosiestep @WomenArtistUpdates@Ipigott@Lajmmoore Sorry I'm missing lots I don't know who is normally in this list. TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:18, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
Expanding ping for assistance: Alsoriano97, Chocmilk03, Cielquiparle, CT55555, Curbon7, DaniloDaysOfOurLives, Grnrchst, Ipigott, Lajmmoore, Oronsay, PamD, Penny Richards, Silver seren, TheResilientEngineer, TSventon, Victuallers, WomenArtistUpdates.
I've drafted the invite. Just needs the TOTM before review for accuracy. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:52, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
MSGJ I can't sort out why "Logo" and "MassMessenger" isn't showing on the tasks template (as it did in April). Help? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:52, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
@MSGJ: I've sorted @Rosiestep's request for help. Oronsay (talk) 18:31, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Hi team, I'm happy to send the MassMessage when the invite is ready. I've also suggested a 'tip of the month', but not wedded to this at all if anyone has any better suggestions. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:48, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Pinging Alsoriano97, Rosiestep, Cielquiparle, CT55555, Curbon7, DaniloDaysOfOurLives, Grnrchst, Ipigott, Lajmmoore, Oronsay, PamD, Penny Richards, Silver seren, TheResilientEngineer, TSventon, Victuallers, for whoever is around and available. And WomenArtistUpdates, the logo is fabulous as always, thank you very much. Everything is good to go now but someone else (not me) needs to check the proposed tip of the month and invite; once that is done I will send the invite out. In 11 hours it'll be 1 May here, so hope someone can do this soon! Many thanks, Chocmilk03 (talk) 01:11, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
My thanks to @WomenArtistUpdates for another great logo. I've checked and OK-ed the Tip and Invitation so good to go, @Chocmilk03, thanks. Oronsay (talk) 04:28, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
One more word of thanks to WomenArtistUpdates for a beautiful logo. Also, thank you, Chocmilk03 for volunteering again this month to send out the MassMessage. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:50, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
@Oronsay, brilliant, thank you! Chocmilk03 (talk) 04:37, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

(NEW) Religion

I thought we could consider reviving the 2024 initiative on religion and celebrate it in May, which marks the first anniversary of Leo XIV's papacy, when Jews celebrate Shavuot, Buddhists celebrate Vesak, and Muslims celebrate the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah. What do you think? Thanks and best regards. _-_Alsor (talk) 22:18, 7 January 2026 (UTC)

I'm supportive of this. Suggest we align it to match up with the scope of WikiProject Women in Religion: scholars, activists and practitioners in the world's religious, spiritual and wisdom traditions. Pinging: @Dzingle1, RosPost, and Figureskatingfan: --Rosiestep (talk) 16:17, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
That's great, thanks @Rosiestep! _-_Alsor (talk) 17:00, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
@Rosiestep, the Women in Religion WikiProject would be happy to help! It may even coincide with the publication of our newest volume of biographies, which is about women of non-traditional faith traditions. I'm sure that @Dzingle1 can tell us more about the exact publication date. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:56, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
Volume 4 will hopefully be on its way to publication by May. The working title is Women Challenging Dominant Religious Practices and Expectations through Women-centered Traditions and Spiritualities. Let me know if you need more information. Dzingle1 (talk) 22:21, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
Sounds great....do we have any volunteers to lead? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 12:27, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
Pinging: @Dzingle1, RosPost, and Figureskatingfan:. Happy news! We're moving forward with the Religion and Spirituality event during the month of May. Would appreciate your assistance with redlists, promotion, how to find references, and/or anything else you think would be useful, e.g., if you have an on-wiki instruction page on how to write Wikipedia biographies related to this subset of women. Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:38, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
@Rosiestep and all, we're working on this. Being new to this, I have some questions, though. Should we create a separate page connected to our WikiProject page with everything you've requested above, or would we be able to add our events and projects to the already-existing page here at WIR? Also, will this event last throughout the month of May, starting on the 1st? Thanks and best, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:50, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
Figureskatingfan, yes, all of May. If you provide here a link to your redlist(s) and any subpages with essays (eg, tips/tricks) that you find helpful, we can get them linked in Women in Red subpages. Also any URLs to sources, if you have some special ones, eg, Colleen’s book publications. Thanks! Sorry for brevity; writing on phone. —Rosiestep (talk) 21:57, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
@Rosiestep, understood and thank you. We're on it! Busy too, so also brief. ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:16, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

Hi everyone, see below for the above-requested info for this meetup.

  • Women in Religion project page
  • Zoom meetings: Monthly editathon - Monday, May 11 9:00 pm UTC (4:000 pm CST); monthly planning session - Thursday, May 28 9:00 pm (4:00 pm CST). Contact User:Dzingle1 or User:Figureskatingfan for the zoom link or see our project page.
  • Women in Religion book series: See Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Religion/Women in Religion series. We are currently at the end stage of the publication of Volume 4 in this series, and submissions are being accepted for Volume 5. The working title for Volume 4 is Women Challenging Dominant Religious Practices and Expectations through Women-centered Traditions and Spiritualities, and will probably be published in early summer 2026. See the subpage for a redlist of the biographies featured in Volumes 1-3 that do not currently have a Wikipedia article.

Hope this is enough. If not, let me know. Also let me know how I can assist moving forward. Thanks for such a great honor! Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:20, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

Hi Christine, Are you happy with the Religion event page as it is? If you want to add in some more of this info (I think I captured the basics) please feel free. Thanks! TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:21, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Orphaned women

What do you think about clearing up the backlog of Category:Orphaned articles? PetScan (here's query) shows there is currently 6501 articles about women what no other article links to. Ross's gull (talk) 13:24, 6 February 2026 (UTC)

@Ross's gull: I like this idea. We've run Find Her in the past, which could serve as a sort of template - but maybe with more of a focus on de-orphaning articles. Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:33, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
Apologies, couldn't fit Orphaned Women easily into April as we already have 3 events; suggest moving to June, where it looks like there is space for it. Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:27, 24 March 2026 (UTC)

(NEW) Judiciary

Lately, I have been creating biographies of female judges, and I think it would be interesting to dedicate a monthly initiative to female judges, lawyers, and prosecutors. Although women are very well represented in this sector, and in some countries they are almost in the majority, this is not usually reflected in the high courts, which are very male-dominated spaces. As a result, the few women who are there, especially from non-Anglo-Saxon countries, do not have biographies. To propose a date, 17 July is World Justice Day, which commemorates the date on which the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court was adopted. I would be delighted if it were done earlier. The last time an initiative on justice took place was in February 2023. Thanks and best regards. _-_Alsor (talk) 23:31, 6 January 2026 (UTC)

July is currently unscheduled subject wise. I think this is a great topic! Would you be willing/able to lead the month of July?
Potentially we could roll this in with the idea of Villains listed above and do "Crime and Punishment"? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 12:23, 7 January 2026 (UTC)
@TheResilientEngineer Your proposal is fantastic! Perhaps the title could be "Crime and Law", so that we also cover constitutional justice, but I like it either way. It would be the first time I've led a month, and I'm committed to doing it, but I'd appreciate your help on how to go about it. Thank you! _-_Alsor (talk) 14:34, 7 January 2026 (UTC)
Hello @TheResilientEngineer hope everything is fine. I have created this subpage on my user account where I have been compiling a list of female judges and magistrates, both practising and retired, which I believe can be used for the initiative to make it a little easier to find subjects for whom to create articles. I will continue to expand it. _-_Alsor (talk) 22:25, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
Sorry I've been AWOL. This looks amazing! Great work. This will definitely help with the lists! Do you want help with setting up the month in July or do you think you'll be able to lead with support from the rest of us? I can make sure I'm around to help if you're still not feeling confident? Let me know :) TheResilientEngineer (talk) 12:23, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
@TheResilientEngineer I would prefer it if you could help me. It's my first time doing this, and I'm expecting a busy May-July, so I don't want to mess it up. I'm happy to learn for future initiatives. Thank you! _-_Alsor (talk) 22:51, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll add my name to the rota for July then so that I don't forget. We should aim to get started when we get to the first/second week of May. TheResilientEngineer (talk) 12:09, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

Geofocus ideas

Microstates

  • Perhaps we could bring back Geofocus:Microstates. If I'm not mistaken, the last time was in July 2019. Best regards. _-_Alsor (talk) 11:46, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
    That is a good idea. Moondragon21 (talk) 18:45, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
Just to let you know @Alsoriano97 and @Moondragon21 that this theme is up for September! Thank you for the suggestion! Lajmmoore (talk) 19:21, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
@Lajmmoore thank you for informing me and thanks @Moondragon21 for supporting my suggestion. I am sure we will see very interesting and valuable contributions. I will contribute to that. _-_Alsor (talk) 19:27, 31 August 2025 (UTC)

Marshall Islands

The Legislature of the Marshall Islands building recently burned down, destroying its library and archives. Perhaps we can do our part to help preserve and digitize the history of this nation. Curbon7 (talk) 06:13, 27 August 2025 (UTC)

I totally support this idea in principle, but I wonder what it would look like within a Women in Red context? Lajmmoore (talk) 19:24, 31 August 2025 (UTC)

Non-geofocus ideas

Works by Women

Just moving the link for this idea across, in nutshell there was a proposal for quarterly focuses, but I think that got lost. We could still do a n month for each. I suggested (but also forgot I suggested) these categories: Quarter 1 = Visual arts (painting, sculpture, textiles, architecture, prints, ceramics, fashion, design, New media art, video games) Quarter 2 = Performance (music, dance, drama, opera, film, television) Quarter 3 = Textual Works (fiction, non-fiction, scholarly works, poetry) Quarter 4 = Scientific Works (inventions, equations, naming species, etc. - might need some help with some lists?)

On relfection, and looking at the structure that was already put in above, it would be something like:

  • February - Music, theatre, opera, etc.
  • March - Works by Women series: Works of Painting and Sculpture
  • April - Works by Women series: Written Works
  • May - Scientiftic works

If editors like it, maybe it could be quarterly in 2027 Lajmmoore (talk) 20:10, 24 January 2026 (UTC)

Revolutionary women

Hey all. For quite a while now I've been working on articles about revolutionary women (i.e. women who either participated in revolutions or were involved in revolutionary movements/organisations). Most of my submissions have been to other themed events, but I was thinking it might be fun to do a specific edit-a-thon focused on revolutionary women. I can try putting together a red list for it, perhaps we could do it some time next year? --Grnrchst (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Grnrchst I think this should go on the agenda next year. April 2025 does not have a theme attributed. Perhaps we add it to the list? When we get round to March it would be great if you can help create the event page, would you be happy to do that? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

Interwiki edit-a-thon

I was just fiddling around with the number of links redlist, as I noticed it hadn't updated in over a year, and managed to get it back to working order. It got me thinking whether we should have an edit-a-thon focused specifically on creating articles with a high number of interwiki links; the redlist includes articles with 7 or more interwiki links. This could be a nice way to focus on the higher importance (for lack of a better term) articles that other language wikis have recognised as worthy of articles. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Support! as I think it's an interesting perspective. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:10, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Nobility

Following publication of ODNB's August update and WiR talk page discussion.--Ipigott (talk) 09:20, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Alternative to Humaniki

Faced with the continuing problems with Humaniki (see WiR talk page), it seems to me it would be useful for this project to have an alternative approach to statistics on the proportion of biographies of women on the EN wiki. We should not be dependent on the availability of Humanity's principal creator, who is in any case usually busy with other assignments.--Ipigott (talk) 10:38, 2 September 2025 (UTC)

Award winners

I'm not seeing this in the past events (or maybe I didn't search correctly). In my own primary area of editing interest, the James Beard Awards are on the order of importance of the Oscars. Anyone who has won a James Beard Award is quite likely notable, but there are probably hundreds of not-even-redlinked women at James Beard Foundation Award: 1990s, 2010s, 2020s. For someone like Toni Tipton-Martin, the works she won the awards for were themselves notable, but they weren't even redlinked anywhere either. I'm wondering if there are other similarly major awards in other fields that are themselves a good pointer toward likely notability of the person and/or her works. Checklist for updates of virtual meetups

This section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.

WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:52, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.

The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.

This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:43, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

TIP OF THE MONTH:
* When creating a new article be sure to check various spellings, including birth name, married names and pseudonyms, to be sure an article doesn't already exist. Green tickY
  • Step 1 - add details of the event to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/events (see instructions at Template:WikiProject Women in Red/doc#Technical info). This will automatically update the various lists of events, and also allows editors to tag the article talk pages with {{WikiProject Women in Red}} or its shortcut {{WIR}}.
  • Step 2 - create the event page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/n where n is the number of the new event. You can use the {{WIR meetup}} header template to help you, which will populate the event header and right side infoboxes.
  • Step 3 - add the "body" of the page (welcome, redlists, purpose) using a similar editathon as a starting point. You can copy sections from previous month to add boilerplate language. For example, start at Participants copy through the bottom of the page (example). (Remember to update month and event number in the pasted sections.)
  • Step 4 - create a new category for meetup articles (e.g. at Category:WikiProject Women in Red meetup 372 articles). Add the template {{WIR category}} to the new category.
  • Step 5 - create the invite (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2024#March 2024) using the previous month's invite as a go-by.
  • Step 6 - invite and receive feedback from a sufficient number of WiR enthusiasts that the event page and invite are okay. Mark reviewed items with {{ok}}
  • Step 7 - send out MassMessage notification.
