Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/366

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Women in Red is running a series of events in 2026 to improve coverage not only of women themselves but also of the works they created. Many artworks, designs and creative outputs by women remain undocumented, under-described or entirely absent from Wikipedia.

Welcome!

This edit-a-thon invites new and experienced editors to help address this gap by creating and improving articles about artworks and objects made by women across all forms of creative practice. This includes painting, sculpture, textiles, prints, ceramics, architecture, fashion, design and any other artistic work with lasting significance.

Alongside article creation and improvement, editors are encouraged to upload freely licensed images of these works to Wikimedia Commons, helping to build a richer and more visible record of women's creative contributions.

What else?

  • The lists of redlinks below should provide inspiration.
  • You will also find sections where you can list the articles you created this month and where you can add the images you have uploaded to Commons.
  • New contributors may find these essays helpful: This essay on writing about women and their works and Ten Simple Rules for Women in Red.
  • If you share any of the articles or images on social media, please indicate you have done so next to the article name.

How do I upload images?

The main goals of the event are:

  • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating articles about artworks created by women
  • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
  • to promote the new/improved articles and images through social media.
Thank you!

Redlists (lists of possible articles to be created)

There are also various lists of paintings and works of art by women, many of which deserve separate articles: These include:

We note that the scope of this event is broader than just sculptures and paintings, and we warmly encourage editors to explore other forms of creative practice. If you are looking for other subjects, you might try the following approaches:

  • browse existing categories on Wikipedia such as textiles, architecture, ceramics, printmaking, fashion or design, and identify notable works by women that are not yet covered
  • look at the biographies of women artists and designers; many of their key works are redlinked or mentioned only in passing and would benefit from stand alone articles
  • explore collections held by museums, galleries, craft institutions and design archives; many of these collections include works by women that do not yet have corresponding Wikipedia articles
  • review the category of lists of works of art to identify lists of art by women.

If you identify useful redlinks, feel free to add them to the event page below so that others can use them as inspiration (if possible with reliable sources).
