We have access to ProQuest and newspapers.com. Where can I get past information about developing countries, since newspapers in some countries like India and Nigeria are known for promotion.

For specific countries, Latin America particularly is what i’m curious about.

I mean, scholarly sources are generally ideal. Google Scholar is useful for finding open-access scholarly papers. You can also see if you qualify for Wikipedia Library. Google Books is good for getting leads on books, though I'd generally recommend seeking some way to get the full book if you intend to use it, maybe through a library of some kind. There are some resources that are specific to certain countries as well. For example, I know INEHRM publishes a lot of high-quality (Spanish-language) scholarly resources on Mexican history and that they're frequently available to the public as easily-accessibly PDFs. You could check with the relevant country's Wikiproject to see if they are aware of similarly useful sources specific to the region you're working on. Finally, if you're curious about the veracity of a specific source, you can look it up on the reliable sources noticeboard or ask about it yourself. Hope this is helpful! Thank you for the information. I think our project would be better for a contest for the most improved stubs or start class articles. Our main article for electronic literature has been nominated for a GA, but the rest of our materials are not there yet. Our July editathon is identifying articles in the Hindi, Gujarti wikipedias that should be translated into English, and to translate our main article into those languages. @Dr. Blofeld: Is there any particular reason you believe three months to be too long? It's worth noting that this contest ran last year for the same dates; from what I've read in the post-contest discussion and elsewhere, the length was not a point of concern for the contestants. I personally wouldn't want to commit to three months as a contestant TS. It's a quarter of a year. These probably aren't as time consuming to run as mine but I know mine take a lot of work. I think Wikipedia would be better off doing shorter ones like this more frequently in bursts with periods of intense editing. But if 2024 was successful and the contestants are happy with the duration stick with it, article improvements are always a great thing! Hello everyone, I am working to develop one or two sets of Papua New Guinea-related WP:DYKs to run on 16 September, which marks the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinean independence. If you are writing or expanding an article related to Papua New Guinea, if it is submitted after 16 July (and ideally no later than 2 September) please let me know (or list it at WT:DYK, where hopefully I will create a talkpage section on 16 July). Hi! Really sorry I am unable to understand the rules completely, maybe due to not being an English native as well as new to participate in competitions. I would appreciate if someone explains me better.

• Dates range: The competition dates are during July and September. Can I nominate any article on which I have contributed before these dates, or should it be within this range only?
• Developing countries: I am from Pakistan. But I have contributed to some other countries' articles as well. If I think that an article from US is underlooked, can it be nominated as well, or not?
• Nomination: How to nominate specifically? Should it always be for a GA, FA, or can it be lower than B-class as well? I mean, what is the criteria of the article to be nominated here?

Hi M.Billoo2000, thanks for the questions, and no need to apologize! Just leaving a courtesy link to this year's scoring rules (WP:DCWC25/S) for the benefit of people reading this discussion.

1. Submissions must have been approved/promoted during the contest period to be eligible for points. For example, if you take an article to FAC, it should be promoted between July 1 and September 30 (and submitted to the DCWC within a week) to count for points.

   As a side note, this isn't the first time I've heard a variation of your question this year, so I'll ping the DCWC coordinators so we can discuss clarifying the language. Is there anything you'd suggest to make the rules clearer on this point?

2. As stated in § General rules, submitted articles need to be "closely associated with or have a demonstrable significance to" one of the listed countries to be eligible. A submission related to the United States would not be within the scope of the contest. Also, you do not need to be from a developing country in order to participate! :)
3. The processes mentioned in the scoring rules are a complete list of eligible submission types. Articles B-class and below can be submitted if they appear in the Did you know? or In the news sections of the Main Page. I'm happy to elaborate if you'd like more details about how to nominate at any of these venues.

Hi, all! The last DCWC began my interest in Haiti-related articles, and since then, I have fully revamped WP:WikiProject Haiti. You'll notice that Haiti is worth bonus points as one of the "least developed" countries. That makes sense; it might be among the most imperialized countries in the world, which has led to repeated despotic dictatorships, wealth siphoning, coups, and occupations. Still, Haiti is a beautifully mountainous country, with a melting pot of culture and religion and a history full of hard-working authors, journalists, philosophers, painters, community organizers, farmers, sportspeople, and so on...

Hello! I was thinking of working on the article for Anacaona, an Indigenous Taíno woman, for this contest. She was from the chiefdom of Jaragua, which was primarily located in what is now Haiti (specifically from the area that would become the town of Léogâne), but with parts in the Dominican Republic as well. Would she be closely-related enough to either country to be included within the scope of this contest? If so, what country would I submit her under (or could I submit her under both)? the page for WP:GA says you must be in the top five editors for it to not count as a drive-by nom. Does this contest follow by that rule? Because the contest says merely copyediting isn't enough. But what if I did manage to get into top 5 editors by just copyediting? Will it still count as a drive by nom and thus WP:gaming the system by the contest's standard? Just asking this because one of my pending GA submissions (Xuanwu Gate Incident) is exactly like that. Hey Yelps, thanks for your question! The contest has somewhat stricter criteria than the GAN process on this point. Since you appear to have less than 2% authorship on this article, I don't think that would meet the threshold set by the "All reviewed content must have been worked on significantly by you" language in the scoring rules. This is something the coordinators look at on a case-by-case basis — the scoring rules intentionally leave out any numerical thresholds for this, so I'm unable to provide any here. I would look at the spirit of the law rather than the letter; the same line of the rules states that we generally prefer that you be the primary author (or close to that) for any article you submit. For Xuanwu Gate Incident, it already seems to be fairly developed and 86% of the article has been written by the primary author, so it is unlikely you'll be able to submit it to the DCWC. However, if your GAN the Old Elm passes, you have clearly written the majority of its content and could thus submit it. There's a few obscure territories I eventually plan to write about and may have possible qualifying entries for, so I was wondering if any might be eligible for points, given that they're not listed at Wikipedia:Developing Countries WikiContest/2025/Scoring. These include Saba, Sint Eustatius and Saint Barthélemy in the Caribbean, the Cook Islands in the Pacific, Mayotte, Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean, and Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic. Hey all. I wanted to ask about what articles about pre-division Korea count towards this project. The division of Korea happened in the 1940s, so limiting articles before this based on whether they happen to be from "North/South Korea" makes little sense. Before division, Korea as a whole was a developing country, with an underdeveloped economy and which was subject to colonial occupation by Japan. I'm bringing this up because I wanted to know whether the article on Kim Chwajin would be eligible for submission as part of the contest. We actually touched on this last year (don't worry if you forgot, so did I!), and the conclusion the coordinators came to was that the subject either needed to be localized to a modern developing country or needed to have the usual "closely associated with or have a demonstrable significance to" a modern developing country laid out in § General rules. It seems with Kim Chwajin that he was born in what is now South Korea, and the majority of the prose in § Legacy suggests that his cultural significance is primarily in the south. Unless there's prose you've yet to add that would verify a significance to North Korea, I don't think this article is eligible for the contest. Hi, quick question about eligibility. Would the article on the Chafarinas Islands (and other "plazas de soberanía" (e.g. Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, Alhucemas Islands...) qualify for points?

They are administered by Spain (a developed country) but also claimed by Morocco, and are located just 3 km off the Moroccan coast. Since the rules note that non-sovereign territories are considered case-by-case, I wanted to check whether they would count as "closely associated with a developing country" (Morocco) for contest purposes. overall, the 2025 DCWC went over pretty smooth! i'm very happy with the amount of articles and countries we collectively improved, and congratulations to everyone who participated, and of course to those who won awards. i have some key thoughts and proposals for 2026.

I didn't participate in this year's contest, as much of what would gain me points isn't of much interest to me. But I would like to ask if next year, you could make it so making new articles gained people points. I love creating articles from scratch, and competing to do so would probably make me more active. There would need to be size and sourcing requirements to stop automated creations, but I think it could work. There aren't many articles on niche topics in developing countries (traditional events, niche history, ect.) that could be great editions to our great encyclopedia. @Mikeycdiamond: No need to apologize; long comments on the DCWC talk page are my favorite kind, so thank you! The DCWC indirectly awards new article creation by requiring that they go through Did you know?. There's a few reasons for this, the main ones being to discourage mass stub creation and to take content reviewing responsibilities off of the coordinator team — this was also briefly brought up last year. Hey Fortek67, the DCWC's list of eligible countries is partially based on this list by the International Monetary Fund, which has Poland under the "emerging and developing economies" section. Hey all. I've been going through my backlog of almost-GA articles and wanted to know if the article on Los Errantes would qualify for this contest? They were Spanish but their area of activities was Latin America, bouncing from Cuba to Mexico to Chile to Argentina; their robberies in the latter country got them threatened with an extradition request from the Argentine government as well. Hi HerrHeulsuse! The contest focuses on improving articles corresponding to developing countries. You have to register for the contest and start contributing towards the same. You can score points by various means and you go through the scoring page to understand how you can earn these points. Basically, it rewards you for doing certain things such as improving an article to a WP:Good Article and doing reviews. We also track submissions about women and hand out an award for it. The contest lasts from July 1st and runs until September 30th, but what does that actually mean? For example, do articles that you worked on during the time frame but don't pass GA or appear in DYK only until later count? Equally, do articles that started work on before July 1st but only passed GA or appeared at DYK later count? Some clarification on the rules would be appreciated. Any GA, FA, FL, etc. nomination that passes between July 1st and September 30th can be submitted, regardless of when it was nominated or when the individual worked on it. Any article that appears at DYK during this time can be submitted as well, unless it became a GA before appearing at DYK. What is the timeline for submitting featured pictures (FP) taken by or significantly improved by oneself? Are FPs only within the July-September timeframe eligible? The timeline for submission of featured pictures is the same as other submissions: seven days after the image is promoted at the latest, and only within the contest period of July to September. Picture of the day is not a category the contest awards points for (nor Today's featured article, due to the minimal content review for those processes). I have a quick question about the scoring rules. Is there a limit on the number of prose for new articles submitted to the contest? Or is any length acceptable as long as it meets the DYK criteria?

Hi YosefKT, If an article newly created by you and nominated by you is part of a DYK appearance, it is eligible for five points. Any article with at least 5120 bytes of "readable prose size" is eligible for ten points. Magentic Manifestations (talk) 09:15, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

Hello. I am participating in the Developing Countries WikiContest. I created the article "History of the Jews in Rwanda" and I have nominated it for Good Article status.

The contest rule says: "Contestants have seven days to nominate their work after promotion (for good and featured content)".

My question is: Does this mean I have to wait until the GA review is completed and the article is officially promoted to Good Article status before I add it to my contest submissions page?

Or can I add it to my submissions page now while the GA review is still pending?

Also, I noticed there are many articles waiting for review since early July. How long does it typically take for a reviewer to pick up a nomination?

Hey YosefKT, you do indeed need to wait until the article is promoted to good article status before submitting it to the contest. There is a backlog of good article nominations at the moment, so it might take a while for a reviewer to pick it up. You could add the article to this list to make it more visible to DCWC contestants, which will probably speed up how fast it gets looked at. For the article you linked, I think there's enough of a connection with developing countries like Cuba or Cape Verde that it could be submitted (assuming you plan to bring it to featured list status). I have no idea how to process DYKs as yet but am interested in combining activities - helping with Wiki-admin and participate in this contest.

I imagine that with the article creations for this contest - there are DYKs created as well?

As the DYKs processed are those that appeal to the editors perhaps the ones related to this contest could be processed by participating editors, help clear the backlog at the same time.

I can join in with this endeavor at the end of August - although currently have no idea on how to process DYKs...

Hey HerrHeulsuse, you might be interested to know that we had a bonus multiplier in the first year of the DCWC for "high-level articles" (see § From relation to developing countries), which we retired as we didn't receive any submissions that could claim it. This discussion has some of the reasons why we made that decision.
