If anyone wants to do a "did you know" now is your chance - especially if you have never done one
I am reluctant to do Climate change in Brazil as I already did 5 DYK and after that you have to review other peoples as a "quid pro quo". If anyone has not done 5 DYK and wants to do then you have a couple of days left while this article would be eligible - deadline 25th Jan I think. The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Pedro II articles
I came across Template:Pedro II of Brazil sidebar and I'm wondering why there are standalone articles for certain aspects of Pedro's life when it could be just on the main article. The one I think that's reasonable to remain decline and fall of Pedro II of Brazil which could also include his exile and death and even legacy. I want to hear from members of this project to see if such articles are needed as a standalone. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:01, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Enchentes e deslizamentos de terra no Litoral Norte de São Paulo em 2023 -- we need to start English article
Flood disaster in São Paulo state with dozens of deaths and extensive damage -

Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Content assessment#Proposal: Reclassification of Current & Future-Classes as time parameter, which is within the scope of this WikiProject. This WikiProject received this message because it currently uses "Current" and/or "Future" class(es). Municipality population vandalism
I thought I should alert someone to this, and I hope this is a good place to do so. Someone under various anonymous IP addresses has been randomly changing the population values to incorrect numbers on random articles for various Brazilian municipalities. I have reverted a lot of them, but it is extremely likely I have missed some (I can't manually check thousands of articles), and the culprit seems to be continuing. There is an error in the documentation for the templates for the navy ensign (Brazilian Navy) and the navy flag (Brazilian Navy). The two are transposed, see infobox at Brazilian Navy.
The error was introduced in this edit by Illegitimate Barrister, despite the flag/ensign being shown correctly in Brazilian Navy at the time. This was raised in 2018, by an IP, at the template talk page, where Cabayi asserted that the template links were correct, and advised that any change must come from concensus in this WikiProject (that was not followed up at the time). Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.
Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.
Brazil is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest, so articles related to it are eligible to be submitted to the contest. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

@Bearian: I don't think he was extremely notable as a poet? But as a politician oh dear, he was a rightwing figure his entire life it seems. Supporting the dictatorship Vargas, supporting UDN, supporting the military dictatorship... It seems the highest he rose was the interim Governorship of his state. So I'd say pretty notable. Over in an article I mean to work on more I was a bit worried about the formatting of the sources... I've actually contributed for quite a lot of edits. But I took a pretty long break I guess from really active participation? Wikipedia:Please bite the newbies#Definition of a 'newbie' says "some say that any Wikipedia member that joined after 2001 is a newbie" kkkkkkkk But in regards to a lot of policies, I guess I can be a newbie yeah 🙏🏽. I participated in a lot of FA candidacy reviews for a time.
I wonder if citation templates are somewhat new? Apparently they go back to 2005. But maybe their rollout was not even? Maybe back in the day they were less used? Idk... I still see a lot of articles where they're not used and in the templation page it says: "The use of citation templates is neither encouraged nor discouraged." Maybe it's one sort of surefire way to get a proper citation?User:Dwarf Kirlston - talk 04:09, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

Bom dia. In the last few weeks I've been working a bit on the article Caviana. I just have a doubt about the area of this island. Caviana is on various Wikipedia lists that assert its area as 5000km2:
This all seems to be based on this source, but I strongly doubt that Caviana is this large. The length of 98km and with of 48km in my article are correct. I got the number 2,360km2 from de:Caviana. But my questions are: What would be a good source for the area of this island? And if we find it, maybe we should adapt its inclusion on some of these lists? Obrigado, LeRoc (talk) 10:05, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
Hi @LeRoc! I looked into this and I believe that the source for that 5000km2 should not be used. As to this page on that website, the information on this website is pieced together from a variety of sources by a single person so I would treat it as an unreliable tertiary source. I did some more research on this island to try to find a more accurate area estimate and I found two sources (Source A and Source B) that help. Pg 31 of Source A gives an area of 2,257km2 for Caviana Meridional and 687km2 for Caviana Setentriona, and Pg 33 shows that Caviana Meridional refers to Caviana and Caviana Setentriona refers to this island north-west of Caviana. While Source B doesn't contain area information for the island, page 287 calls Caviana Ilha Caviana (Caviana island) and the island north-west of it Ilha Caviana de dentro (Inner caviana island). Source B also looks like a great general source to use for expanding information on the article. My recommendation is to use the 2,257km2 area estimate given by Source A and replace references to this island being 5000km2. It may also be useful to include Caviana Meridional as an alternate name for Caviana on its page. Espero ter ajudado! BaduFerreira (talk) 16:45, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Completely missed all of Caviana#Inner and Outer Caviana and that you already use the source that I've referred to as Source B 😅 In which case, you just need to add Source A. BaduFerreira (talk) 16:52, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Obrigado. The thing is: the maps in both sources A and B are wrong. They wrongly identify Caviana Setentrional as part of what is actually the island Viçosa. Hmm, I'll look a bit further. LeRoc (talk) 19:07, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Do you have a source for Ilha Viçosa? To me, it appears that Ilha Viçosa/Janauçu and Caviana Setentrional/Ilha Caviana de dentro can be treated as either one or two islands based on water level. It shows as one island on Google Maps, but you can kinda make out how it would be two if you look at the satellite view. BaduFerreira (talk) 19:22, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
It's really hard to find good maps to decide on this, but I think you're right. Let me see tomorrow how I solve this. LeRoc (talk) 20:19, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Yeah, of course, WP:THEREISNORUSH. I found this image on Commons that has the two islands (Ilha Viçosa/Janauçu and Caviana Setentrional/Ilha Caviana de dentro) seperate. BaduFerreira (talk) 03:56, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Just found this IBGE map (linked here) that shows the two islands as Ilha Caviana de Dentro and Ilha Janauçu or Viçosa. Additionally, here Ilha Caviana is called Ilha Caviana de Fora (Outer caviana island). BaduFerreira (talk) 04:42, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Ok, I think that worked. I put the image that Cmglee made on the article Caviana. I think that together with the explanation I wrote, it makes it clear now which island is which. Maybe at some point in the future, IBGE will recognise that Inner Caviana has merged with Janaucu, but until then I think we need to consider it part of Caviana. I will remove Caviana from all lists that assert its area as 5000km2. Obrigado pela ajuda. LeRoc (talk) 07:34, 26 May 2025 (UTC)

Hello. Can you help me assessing these drafts on Brazilian writers:Marcelino Freire,Wilson Bueno, Ieda Magri and Flavio Cafiero, please? I think Freire and Bueno have plenty of RS and coverage; Magri and Cafiero are sort of underbaked.
The original editor often writes several articles on Brazilian writers (an area I also work with). Their pages use to be bare minimum, with few sources. I try to expand them, adding categories and more references but some get draftified before I get time to help.
Unreferenced for almost 20 years. Notability is alleged but questionable. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate, not even Portuguese.
