Merge WikiProjects back into this project
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was to merge to regional taskforces. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 03:43, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
There are a number of cricket-related WikiProjects that I believe would be best suited as taskforces of this project, which would enable collaboration whilst also understanding that articles on these tournaments need to follow guidelines of WP:CRIC. This was previously mentioned in 2021: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket/Archive 90#Creation of task forces. Would be good to get a firm consensus on whether or not to implement this. These breakaway WikiProjects have caused numerous problems over the years including:
- Frequent MOS:COLOR violations on articles and templates
- Misunderstanding of how article ratings work, by rating categories as "high importance"
- Violation of the WP:CRIC standard to only add teams to a player's infobox once they make an appearance (Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar being an example who was in IPL and LPL squads but did not play)
- Creating clutter on article talkpages as if someone plays one match in one of these tournaments, they get added to the WikiProject
- IPL project created templates for every match (60 per season), which led to a massive template clean up project a few years ago
All of these WikiProjects are for franchise T20 tournaments that run for 1-3 months a year, and their WikiProjects are dormant for the rest of the year, or are permanently inactive. They are as follows:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh Premier League - looks permanently inactive
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Lanka Premier League - been inactive for around 2 years, despite only being created in 2021
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian Premier League - looks to be inactive
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan Super League - looks to be inactive
In addition, I have separately nominated the recently created Wikipedia:WikiProject Women's Premier League (cricket) for deletion, but would be okay with this becoming a task force here too (but no merge is required as there is no history to keep). This post aims to satisfy Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/Merging WikiProjects#Establish consensus for a merger by getting a consensus for or against this. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:52, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- WP:IPL & WP:WPLc both together → Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/India cricket task force
- WP:PSL → Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Pakistan cricket task force
- WP:BPL → Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Bangladesh cricket task force
- WP:LPL → Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Sri Lanka cricket task force

- Agreed per nom. Task forces are a much better option in my opinion. Easier to manage and work within. As already said if people aren't interested than why have four-five different projects and leave them dormant. Wikibear47 (talk) 08:17, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- Agree per nom. I think task forces are much better than having a single WikiProject. For example, WikiProject Japan has many task forces under a single project which makes it easier to handle.

- Agree per nom. Task forces would probably work out better than the inactive Wikiprojects currently, and it might become easier to manage the never ending increase in T20 leagues. Hamza Ali Shah Talk 23:19, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

Looks like we do have a consensus to merge this WikiProjects back into Cricket WikiProject. Instead of creating taskforces for Full members how about ICC regions... So, it could also cover associate nations as well.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Africa cricket task force
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Americas cricket task force
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Asia cricket task force
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/EAP cricket task force or Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/East Asia-Pacific cricket task force
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Europe cricket task force
Additionally,
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/ICC cricket task force or a similar name to focus on the events administrated by ICC itself such as WTC, World Cups, Qualifiers, Champions Trophy, Rankings, Awards etc. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 13:07, 12 October 2024 (UTC)

This merge has been managed incorrectly so far, wiping out useful pages with no links to their history, and creating pages with unattributed content. Please see this discussion for a few details. CricketArchive
Some scorecards link to Cricinfo and some to Cricket Archive. I've got no issue with Cricket Archive except it doesn't allow you to see the card. I don't imagine this is a new issue. What was resolved previously? MaskedSinger (talk) 09:15, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- They pay-walled their content 5-odd years ago, so the links are probably from before then. Liberal use of the escape key whilst the page is starting to load will let you see most stuff on there! Spike 'em (talk) 09:31, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Spike 'em! Should we switch over the links to cricinfo? MaskedSinger (talk) 09:34, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- There is nothing inherently wrong in using WP:PAYWALLed references, though it's obviously easier to verify using non-paid content such as Cricinfo. There are 100s of pages linking to CricketArchive so would be quite an undertaking to replace them all. Spike 'em (talk) 10:16, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Just in case if someone is thinking about switching,
- List scorecard links to cricketarchive.com - thousands of them.
- List scorecard links to cricketarchive.co.uk - 587 of them.
- Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 11:39, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- If switching from Cricket Archive to Cricinfo, editors need to be careful that we're not using verifiability. Cricinfo does not list all women's domestic cricket tournaments, whereas I believe Cricket Archive does- so for many women's cricketers, Cricinfo is not a valid source for all of their infobox statistics. e.g. Nat Sciver-Brunt has Women's List A stats listed in her infobox, and those stats are not on her Cricinfo profile, as that only lists a handful of domestic T20 tournament stats and no List A (50 over) stats. LPL & BPL categories
Both Lanka Premier League and Bangladesh Premier League appear to have teams that change their suffix every season. Looking at the cricketer categories for the LPL and we still have 'Galle Gladiators cricketers' even though the Galle team have had two new names since and probably a third on it’s way. To save future work of renaming and to remain accurate, would it make sense to simply rename the categories as Galle franchise cricketers, Galle LPL franchise cricketers or Galle (LPL franchise) cricketers? JP (Talk) 11:14, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Great proposal. I prefer your first option, without BPL/LPL/IPL, because even the leagues themselves get rebranded. We should roll it out worldwide, if necessary. ReturnDuane (talk) 22:11, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
Featured material
Hello all. As a project we have 321 featured works, mostly featured lists. Where do we all stand with increasing this number, particularly for non-list articles? Does anyone have any up-and-coming articles headed toward FA status? Any particular areas we should focus on going forwards? AA (talk) 16:41, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've read several cricket articles which are either FA or GA, and haven't seen any significant difference in standard. I presume there are some higher bar FA criteria which some reviewers apply rigidly? I'd suggest the GA material (143 in total) is the best place to find FA candidates but, without knowing the criteria gap, I wouldn't be able to recommend specifics.
- The trouble with classifications like these is that a good article is a good article, and it is someone's opinion whether it gets published (real world) or featured (here). ReturnDuane (talk) 07:29, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds like the avenue to go. I also think there should be articles we need to prioritise. For example, Shane Warne, or W. G. Grace, so historically significant articles, or articles important to the game, such as Laws of Cricket. I'd bypass GA and head straight to FA. GA had me on hold for 5 months and a rather back and forth frustrating experience, which has put me off going back. AA (talk) 22:12, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I see what you mean about GA delay. The oldest nomination there now is Atlanta Braves, since 22 February! I agree with your priorities, and Laws is especially important. Some major players including Bradman, Headley, Rhodes, and Hobbs are already at FA but, as you say, the likes of Grace, Sobers, Warne, Tendulkar, Murali, and a few others should ideally be there too. I might have more time for WP come the New Year so I'll think about adopting an article then. ReturnDuane (talk) 16:02, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi again, AA. I was in a secondhand bookshop yesterday and saw the Grace biography by Simon Rae. It's highly rated and, having read the first three chapters, I think it's excellent. So, I'll adopt WG and, time permitting, see what I can do to improve it, but the main problem is its size. It's a big article about the Big 'Un. ReturnDuane (talk) 22:21, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- I also have the Rae book, and agree that it's excellent. ISTR some years ago adding some stuff from it to the article. Checking, I see that Rae's name appears no less than 58 times in the article, so there must be quite a bit from his book already included, though most of it I think was not added by me. One surprising omission in Rae's book is that I don't think it mentions his football at all. JH (talk page) 09:41, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

Introducing Let's Connect
Hello everyone,
I hope that you are in good spirits. My name is Serine Ben Brahim and I am a part of the Let’s Connect working group - a team of movement contributors/organizers and liaisons for 7 regions : MENA | South Asia | East, South East Asia, Pacific | Sub-Saharan Africa | Central & Eastern Europe | Northern & Western | Latina America.
Why are we outreaching to you?
Wikimedia has 18 projects, and 17 that are solely run by the community, other than the Wikimedia Foundation. We want to hear from sister projects that some of us in the movement are not too familiar with and would like to know more about. We always want to hear from Wikipedia, but we also want to meet and hear from the community members in other sister projects too. We would like to hear your story and learn about the work you and your community do. You can review our past learning clinics here.
We want to invite community members who are:
- Part of an organized group, official or not
- A formally recognized affiliate or not
- An individual who will bring their knowledge back to their community
- An individual who wants to train others in their community on the learnings they received from the learning clinics.
To participate as a sharer and become a member of the Let’s Connect community you can sign up through this registration form.
Once you have registered, if you are interested, you can get to know the team via google meets or zoom to brainstorm an idea for a potential learning clinic about this project or just say hello and meet the team. Please email us at Letsconnectteam@wikimedia.org. We look forward to hearing from you :)
Many thanks and warm regards,
Let’s Connect Working Group Member

Redbourn Cricket Club
Please source this. Bearian (talk) 15:00, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think the club is in any way notable, so I'm surprised that the article has survived so long since it was created in 2009. So sourcing it would be a waste of time. (I imagine that in the reference to 1666 in the fist paragraph "country" is a typo for "county".) JH (talk page) 16:22, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

WikiProject invite

Review request!
Happy New Year all! I have a couple more Hampshire cricketers lined up for FA nom and wondered if anyone would be kind enough to review them? Any additions/suggestions much appreciated :)
AA (talk) 20:22, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, AA, and all the best to you for 2025. I'll try to find time to look at these. I have a full set of the original Playfair handbooks (1948–1962) and these guys feature in those so I'll see if there's anything that could be useful. For example, although I need to check, I think Roy Marshall may have been in one of their teams of the year.
- On the subject of reviews, we were discussing key articles in need of improvement some weeks ago and I said I would look at W. G. Grace. I've been making occasional forays into it and have just completed a full restructure to give it some balance and remove repetition. I'd like it to go to FA someday if possible but it still needs more research, especially of contemporary sources like the old Cricket magazine. I don't suppose anyone will pick it up in the near future, but I've placed it in the WP:GAN queue as I think it's ready for a review in terms of prose, lead, sources, NOR/NPOV, images, etc. The only thing that will change, if more content is unearthed, would be just that—more content.
- If anyone here can look at WG and make or suggest improvements, that will be great. Having said that, bear in mind it's still a very long article! ReturnDuane (talk) 12:14, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @ReturnDuane, thank you and all the best in 2025 for you too. That would be great to see if there is any addition stuff for these articles, particularly Marshall, who I shall likely to take to FA in the next few weeks.
- I must have missed that discussion a few weeks ago (I'm guilty of not really visiting here all that often!). I'd be happy to have a look at W. G. and see what I can add. It would be nice to aim for FA for at least 10% of England Test cricketers, ~ 80 or so. Wynyard has been promoted, so that's another one done! The GAN queue is quite the queue, have several I want to take there, but by the time the review is complete I can probably bring them to FA!!! AA (talk) 21:40, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Template:Twenty20 competitions
A user (Csknp) has brought it up on my user talkpage that the {{Twenty20 competitions}} navbox is different from {{First-class cricket domestic competitions}} and {{List A cricket domestic competitions}} and it should be made similar as {{Twenty20 cricket domestic competitions}} as they did in this edit.
I am opposing this because, unlike FC or LA, T20 cricket includes multi-national competitions such as Global Super League, Champions League Twenty20 etc. which are not domestic competitions. I have brought this here for a wider discussion and inputs from other users. Read the discussion on my user talkpage as well (User talk:Vestrian24Bio#Template:Twenty20 cricket domestic competitions discussion). Vestrian24Bio 02:48, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

Correct name format for English county women's teams
What should the English county women's teams articles be named? Reason I'm asking is that the Essex women article has been moved a couple of times recently from "Essex Women cricket team" to "Essex women's cricket team". I've raised Technical RMs to move it back (twice) but not sure if I am doing the right thing. There was a discussion on Talk:Berkshire Women cricket team in October but it was inconclusive and the existing names were kept. Essex are still officially called Essex Women, so would that be the correct name? Bcp67 (talk) 21:33, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- My view is same as I posted on that RM: wait for 2025 season to start and see what the WP:COMMONNAME for them is then. Joseph2302 (talk) 21:44, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- I would say "Essex women's cricket team" to be WP:CONSISTENT with national teams, but in this case wait for the season to commence per Joseph. Vestrian24Bio 01:37, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
Synth between cricketing disciplines
One thing that's popped into my mind recently - a long time ago I had an edit war with an editor after I moved a cricketer (I forget who) between categories on one of their team pages on the grounds that his own article listed him accordingly (which are more often than not backed up by a source for each player specifically). However, for team articles a link-to-the-team page seems to be overriding it all? For example, Ollie Pope is listed as a batter on his own page, Surrey, and London Spirit, but as a wicket-keeper on Adelaide Strikers. Spa-Franks (talk) 21:02, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- I hasn't been paying any attention to BBL, but it does seem that Pope is 1st choice keeper for Adelaide, but does not fulfil this role for any other domestic team. Spike 'em (talk) 21:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's as maybe, but doesn't actually answer my query, only one example. Spa-Franks (talk) 17:42, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, I realised after I replied that it wasn't too helpful to the overall question. If teams release a squad list, or maintain one on their website, that mention player roles then I'd go with that. Many players seem to be classified differently in different sources, particularly all-rounders and occasional keepers like Pope. Spike 'em (talk) 19:37, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's as maybe, but doesn't actually answer my query, only one example. Spa-Franks (talk) 17:42, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
Where was this image originally published?

Where was this image of James Lillywhite's 1876-77 touring team originally published? I can't seem to find where it originally came from, anyone have any ideas? Taking Southerton to FA and will inevitably be quizzed who the original publisher was! AA (talk) 00:49, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's a difficult one but I would guess it was taken at Lord's, and so it may have been commissioned by MCC. I see it was uploaded to WP from Reddit, but there's no certainty it was ever published in print. Reddit might have obtained it as part of a collection. It is definitely public domain, though. Good luck. ReturnDuane (talk) 01:31, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
Hi, @AssociateAffiliate: by chance, I've seen the photo on page 13 of David Frith's England versus Australia compendium (published 2007 by Penguin). The caption gives the names of the players, plus A. Hogben (described as "tour financier", and looking decidedly shifty with the camera on him!). There are over 1,300 images in the book and David acknowledges a vast list of sources on page 4. A few exceptions apart, none of the 19th Century images including this one can be acknowledged, and David provides a caveat about them, saying: "All other illustrations are from the author's private collection of photographs, scrapbooks, postcards, cigarette cards, prints, books, and relics".
Which leaves us none the wiser, except that David obviously found, or even purchased, the photo somewhere and, as there was no copyright on it by 2007, decided to use it in his book. It does facilitate things for you, though, should anyone ask about it, because you can cite it as public domain and published by David in 2007. ReturnDuane (talk) 15:21, 17 January 2025 (UTC)

CricketArchive workaround
As well as the escape key trick, it is possible to view pages on CricketArchive by other means. It seems any player / match / stats list is available via another domain (in basic form).
If you have a link of the format cricketarchive.com/Archive/*
then you can see the same page by going to stats.acscricket/Archive/*
.
As an example if you wanted to view this random match (which may involve a member of this project!) https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/436/436049.html you can instead go to https://stats.acscricket.com/Archive/Scorecards/436/436049.html
Similarly for players, instead of https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/4/4263/4263.html try https://stats.acscricket.com/Archive/Players/4/4263/4263.html
It's particulary useful if you need / want to navigate aroud a player's stats / matches, removing the need for constant escaping.
We could also look into replacing any such links on pages, which would be a lot easier than trying to find alternative sources, as was suggested recently
Disclaimer : You could also just pay for a subscription! Spike 'em (talk) 10:00, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

I have bad news for you, cricketists. Hatton Park, Wellingborough is not dead, and isn't just a cricket ground. Move
Hello everyone. I just wanted to ask if I should move English cricket team in India in 2024–25 to English cricket team in India in 2025. All the matches are in 2025, so it seems weird for 2024 to be there. I just wanted to ask if it's supposed to be like this TNM101 (chat) 14:54, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Interested in joining WP:Cricket (from America, even!), but asking for a favor first...
Hi. I've long wanted to edit cricket articles here on WP, due to a supposedly "closeted" love for the sport from across "the pond", but I'm really disappointed in the fact that I can't read the portal's front page (and the summary box on the talk page) at all in dark mode, and even when I highlight the text, it is very hard to read. Only Wikilinks are readily visible in it so far, but not the contexts for them. Anyway, is it possible to come up with a dark mode-friendly color scheme for this portal? -- JustJamie820 (talk) 03:10, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- front page appears fine on webview, not sure about the mobile view though. Vestrian24Bio 06:25, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- Vestrian24Bio they are referring to Wikipedia:Dark mode settings, where the background is black. Not sure how other places on Wiki make pages dark mode accessible, so imagine this is a wider issue. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:14, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- Although JustJamie820 what problem with the page are you having? I tried dark mode on my phone and all the text is white so readable. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:20, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- I am aware of Wikipedia:Dark mode Joseph, but I don't see what's the problem with it. Vestrian24Bio 11:49, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- Both on mobile and on my computer, the text is black (or really dark gray) and the background is black. When I highlight the black/dark gray text on my computer, it is a dark blue, which is only marginally better. An important note is that, on mobile, I am not logged into my account. Also important is that I use Mozilla Firefox in both places, in case it's more of a browser issue than anything else.-- JustJamie820 (talk) 19:35, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- The text below the summary box on this page is fine, by the way. Everything in that box, except for wikilinks, is black on black. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 01:32, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- Here's the problem: The backgrounds for WP:Cricket are all transparent. If it has any background color, the text will be visible. Even a black background works because it changes to white in dark mode. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 06:07, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- @JustJamie820: I just checked it on four platforms (Windows, Linux, Android browser & app), text in the portal page appears in white color in all of them. Vestrian24Bio 11:31, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- Conversely, when I checked three browsers through Windows, Firefox, Edge, and Chrome, the text is black. With the latter two, I'm checking without signing in. If it's white on your end, what am I doing wrong? -- JustJamie820 (talk) 20:18, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Vestrian24Bio, @Joseph2302: Rather than the back and forth of "My text is black" and "My text is white", I think I REALLY know what's happening. You're likely using the Dark Mode gadget, which I noticed DOES flip the text color from black to white and keeps the black background. I use the Dark Mode setting that the appearances section has (it's the icon that looks like a pair of spectacles/glasses), which keeps the text black on a black background. I hope this makes sense. All I know is that I don't want to argue about this anymore; I am not a fan of doing so. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 04:46, 3 February 2025 (UTC) (P.S. Cricket in 1948
There's set of pages with AfD-merge outcomes related to the Australian cricket team in England in 1948. Their content is vast, but the consensus is to merge most of daughter articles to that page. They're now among the oldest set of merges that haven't been carried out (see Category:Articles to be merged from June 2024), and so it's likely that a non-expert will take to them soon. It would be better for readers if someone with a specialist interest were to do the job. If you need a reminder on how to, rather than how's that, have a look at WP:MERGETEXT. So, to be clear, this currently involves:
- Sid Barnes with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948
- Don Bradman with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948
- Bill Brown with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948
- Lindsay Hassett with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948

- Ray Lindwall with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948
- Sam Loxton with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948
- Keith Miller with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948
- Arthur Morris with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948

Sources for old Indian cricket...
Is there any place that has sources for 1950s to 1970s Indian cricket readily available? I don't care if they're in English or not, although if it's not, I'll need to go to a translation site. I ask because I'm trying to make an article on cricketer C. G. Joshi, who had a 26-year Ranji Trophy career but never played in Tests, and I don't want to use CricketArchive exclusively to create sources for the article. (Wisden never covered Joshi's career.) Of course, I also wonder if another wiki has an article on him; that'll also help. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 08:16, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
- Postscript: I made the page anyway. I'm still interested in those resources, however, if they exist anywhere. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 02:33, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

- I probably should have checked the second link a bit closer. The Delhi Express is not from India. Hack (talk) 01:00, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- It also might not have been the most reliable paper, since there's no link or redirect to it on Wikipedia. But I appreciate the effort in searching. I'll still look at the Indian Express ones when I have time, when I'm not seeking help on the other side of "the rivalry", namely wanting non-CI/CA sources for Pakistani players of the same vintage who need articles. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 01:43, 20 February 2025 (UTC)

Is using the CricketArchive Oracle original research?
Sorry for bothering you all again. Anyway, in an article I'm writing for South African cricketer Mike Doherty, and to a lesser extent my C. G. Joshi article, I've come across facts that would be valuable to include on their pages but can only source through CricketArchive's Player Oracle. In Doherty's case, he appeared in only four first-class wins in 85 matches; for Joshi, he lost all ten of his final matches that he appeared in during his career. For Doherty, I can only show this by using the Oracle to tell me which matches were victories of his team and then compare it to the complete total of matches on his CA player page. (Joshi might not need a comparison link, but I still need proof that he played in and lost seven Ranji and three Duleep finals.) Although I have seen the Oracle used for some pages on prominent cricketers (the featured article on Adam Gilchrist uses the Oracle 90 times, as an extreme example), I don't know whether it's a reasonable use of the CA website or if it's original research. I can't find a page that answers this question, so I'll ask the question here: Is the Oracle acceptable to use as a source? -- JustJamie820 (talk) 03:23, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- The Gilchrist article went to FA quite a long time ago didn't it? I'm not sure so much stats dredging would necessarily be accepted today - there are reports for almost all the things it uses I imagine. For me, what you've described above is OR. I'm not sure the Doherty fact is particularly worth including to be honest - certainly not if someone else hasn't written about it. Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:47, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- Gilchrist is one of the first cricket FAs, I think. Back to the Oracle, I got that impression that I couldn't use it, even to verify years as captain, but I was getting mixed signals thanks to Gilchrist; that was the main reason I brought this point up here. I thank you, and Wjemather, for your comments on it. I didn't use the Oracle on either article I mentioned, and I'll plan to avoid it for future articles as well. Incidentally, the Doherty fact was to illustrate the lack of success his team had during his 21 years there, but that's irrelevant since no one wrote about it; likewise with the 0-10 record Joshi had in finals. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 20:39, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- Such facts are probably best described as WP:TRIVIA and statistical cruft. If such things have not been written about elsewhere, we shouldn't be writing about them here. wjematherplease leave a message... 11:58, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
Needing help with old sources for Pakistani cricketers...
I have another question here, imagine that. Seriously, though, my search in cricketers without Wikpiedia articles has come across Raja Sarfraz, and with him, I can't just base everything on statistics due to an unusual peak and a mysterious departure from cricket for a year a few years after. My question is this: Where can I find 1980s Pakistani sources digitized online? If it's in Urdu or some other Pakistani language, that is fine, so long as it works with Google Translate. I'd search myself, but I don't know how to search for the cricketer's name in Urdu, as Google Translate doesn't seem to work with proper names. I was going to go to the Asian cricket taskforce for help on this or to randomly message the members with Pakistani flags next to their usernames, but I figured it'd be easier to ask here...assuming you haven't had enough of my questioning yet. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 00:23, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
Help with a rejected Article for Creation...
It's me again, without a research question. If you pay attention to the front page, you'll notice my Article for Creation request on John West. Today (25 February), it got rejected for what's said to be the same reasons that the previous version got deleted, even though it doesn't have much of a resemblance to the version deleted in 2022. I bring it up here because I'm wondering what anyone interested in reading it thinks about it, and whether I should take it through another process to get it back on Wikipedia. I've poured over a lot of old newspapers to find mentions of him (one I found actually isn't the article because I don't know where to mention how he had a reputation for hitting the ball hard), so I hope I've done him some justice. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 05:42, 26 February 2025 (UTC) (P.S. Hi! I have made some changes to the project banner in its sandbox version:
- I have changed the image to this, which is similar to logo I added here.
- I have also added a few new notes;
- Cricket articles with no associated task force - Now that there are new task forces, this category would be helpful to keep track of articles.
- Former FA-Class cricket articles - already exists; but added a visible note to it.
- Former FL-Class cricket articles - already exists; but added a visible note to it.
- Former GA-Class cricket articles - would be useful to keep track of former GA pages as well.
- Current cricket articles - would be useful to keep track of current competitions.
- Cricket Collaboration - planning to begin it from February 2025.
Others, please let me know what your thoughts about this are... Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 11:44, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

Infobox cricket tournament
I am proposing some changes to the Template:Infobox cricket tournament, I've already worked up a sandbox version.
- Reason: The
|host=parameter is currently being used to refer to the country(s) the event was held, but the ICC considers the relevant governing body as hosts. This has led to many editing disputes (from 2021 Men's T20 World Cup to 2025 ICC Champions Trophy).
- Proposal: All the current usage of
|host=parameter should be switched to a|country=parameter and the|host=parameter should be for host bodies (only for ICC events).
- Example for ICC events (2024 Men's T20 World Cup here):
|
|
- Example 2 for ICC events (2025 ICC Champions Trophy here):
|
|
- Example for non-ICC events (2023 Asia Cup here):
|
|
- Summary: If hosting body and location are the same, they should only have the
|host=parameter with governing bodies instead of the countries, if they vary should have both parameters.
- Note: This should have no impact on domestic events (including franchise leagues), because they won't be using either parameters, just as how they're now.
Vestrian24Bio 12:06, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- I think you always want to show the country(s) where the tournament took place, in preferences to the organisation providing (some of) the stadiums. Spike 'em (talk) 13:20, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- "always want to show the country(s) where the tournament took place" - that's what currently being done, I just want to add a separate parameter for the actual organizers. Vestrian24Bio 13:29, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- Example 1 shows the cricket boards instead of the countries. Every other major supporting event (football WC, Olympics/ athletics, rugby WC) shows the host city or country and then maybe the organising committee. I think cricket articles should continue to do the same, even if the ICC is a complete clusterfuck. Spike 'em (talk) 16:12, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- Also, having a field labelled "country(s)" could be seen as listing competing countries, rather than where the tournament took place. Spike 'em (talk) 16:16, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- Perhaps, we could come with a better label for it, it's just a proposal - I am open for suggestions.
- My point was that, every time organizing body and locations defer, we end up having edit wars and long talk page discussions. This could work as a solution to avoid repeating that every year. That's all. Vestrian24Bio 16:27, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

- The previous consensus of TfD is only for winning teams, but we currently have squad navboxes for all the teams. So, that consensus isn't being followed properly by that means.. Vestrian24Bio 06:14, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Ok, I think it should be the option D or none. I prefer D most because if you want to add navboxes for team squads then you must add it for all the teams. Otherwise, it will look odd to see just champion or the semi finalists squad with navboxes and not for other teams. Adding navboxes can also help to spectate the squads at a glance. However, my final say is if you want to add navboxes for team squads then add for either all teams or for none. The format should be same for all I think. Samin Yasar KZS (talk) 06:17, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- I think we either have squad navboxes for all the participating teams or none at all, having these navboxes for just semi-finalists or finalists doesn't make sense. And adding onto that, if we end up having navboxes at all, we should restrict it to World Cups only (either formats) not for other events like Champions Trophy. Cric editor (talk) 06:22, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- I really don't have a major interest in this area, but since I was pinged, I'll say this: Option A only works for the Test Championship. Option D works for the three other major tournaments. It's no different from association football articles having navboxes for the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics, the major continental tournament for the player's national team, and, in some cases, other FIFA trophies. Back to cricket, we either do all or nothing for the non-Test tournaments. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 00:21, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

- Option D: Have navboxes for each and every team which has played in each and every ICC and ACC tournament and ICC WTC final; Olympic, Asian and Commonwealth Games, World Championship of Cricket and other major significant multi-team tournaments such as Nehru Cup etc. - able to display squad navboxes effectively, a simple scroll down a player's page can show how many ICC and ACC tournaments he / she has participated / been selected for. Also a longtime convention in other sports. Will be willing to work on it - Start from 1975 for men and 1973 for women and make / update all navboxes for each team which participated with coach and possible replacements if documented, and paste them in their articles. (Other than articles of replacement reserve players). Pharaoh496 (talk) 08:16, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

I missed this statement before. This is not the purpose of a navbox: it goes to show you are using then as decoration / medal collection rather than as an aid to finding similar articles. If you want to easily see how many squads a player was a member of, then create a section on career achievements or similar. Spike 'em (talk) 09:47, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

- Option D - In the same way that we have navboxes for every participating squad at the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship and the Rugby World Cup, I don't see any reason why we can't do the same for the Cricket World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy. – PeeJay 10:09, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

- does not matter. it is an icc tournament, and in numeric quantities regarded the same as any world cup it will now be played once every four years and is confirmed to not be going anywhere, which for the longest time was a point of concern since 2012-2013. - Option A, and only for major tournaments (i.e. world cups). Existing consensus is clear. There are simply too many tournaments to be having navboxes for everything without creating an barely navigable mess. - Option D for World Cup, Option A for others - Do you have to basket all ICC events in the same way? My view is the World Cup remains the most important ICC tournament so I'm fine with keeping that as Option D, the linked consensus is Option A for the Champions Trophy and we currently have Option A for the World Test Championship. To me that leaves the T20 World Cup as the main discussion point, especially as we currently have a mixture with winners for 2007-2010, winners and India for 2012-2016, 7 random teams of 16 for 2021, 10 random teams of 16 for 2022 and all teams for 2024. Clearly this should be consistent across all T20 World Cups which either means creating lots of templates for old tournaments (would the work be worth it) or deleting non-winners from 2012 onwards. It's an extreme example but the Rohit Sharma page already has 24 templates, so to think he needs two more as he doesn't have the 2009 and 2010 World T20 seems somewhat absurd as having that many templates already must be a barrier rather than an aid to navigation. So I'd lean toward Option A for the T20 World Cup, that would leave the 50-over World Cup as the outlier but I believe the argument can be made it remains the most important tournament in the sport. JP (Talk) 10:23, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Didn't mean to basket all ICC events; I meant it to exclude other events such as Asia Cup. Vestrian24Bio 11:39, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- I'm somewhat similarly minded : should have squad navbox for 50-over WC, and possibly T20 too. Having a tournament every 2 years does seem to mean they are overly proliferated, and when it gets to the stage the navboxes are hidden in a stacked group on player pages, it is clear that they are not being used for their intended purpose (to aid navigation between similar articles).
- No navboxes at all (even winners) for Champions trophy / regional events. Spike 'em (talk) 14:03, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

We don't need navboxes for every squad; especially squads that didn't win the trophy
That is one editor's comment on a single TfD, not necessarily the consenus position. Spike 'em (talk) 13:47, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Navboxes only for World Cup (20 and 50 over) winners only, or maybe stretch to finalists. The TfD consensuses from previous years that not every tournament needs squad boxes for all teams is sensible in my opinion. Having templates for every team at every regional event is excessive (regardless of whether other sports do that, I still don't believe it's right there either). Joseph2302 (talk) 16:06, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- It is absurd to think of having different conventions for the Cricket World Cup and T20 World Cup on one hand and the Champions Trophy for another.
- The CT was a regular tournament from 1998-2006, then it got postponed to 2009 and 2013 was a supposed final event before a 2017 revival. After an 8 year gap, it is back and confirmed by the ICC that it is here to stay. It is an ICC event and all ICC wins are counted the same in numeric quantities, and not having navboxes for teams (mind you, lesser number off), when this happens in every other sport, just because some people still think this tournament is not "important enough", after just having had a complete footing stage after what, 19 years, is extremely weird. Pharaoh496 (talk) 22:15, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- what does this mean
and all ICC wins are counted the same in numeric quantities
? No-one treats winning the CT as anyway comparable to winning one of the WCs. Spike 'em (talk) 22:27, 21 March 2025 (UTC)- subjective opinion. you cant use the logic of "treating it as important" in order to decide squad navbox or not when both wc and ct are listed together in the future icc cycle, theres a similar process of hositng tournaments, they are proper medalled tournaments. we should either have the same rule for all icc events or for none of them at all.
- Pharaoh496 (talk) 19:59, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
- to answer your question - for example, the ict proudly displays having won 7 icc tournaments. this does not clearly only include the world cups. whenever the topic of major international cricket tournaments comes up, ct is always mentioned Pharaoh496 (talk) 20:00, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
- That someone wants to count total wins in ICC events is irrelevant. The Champions Trophy remains nowhere near the World Cup(s) in terms of importance or interest. Claiming otherwise is plainly ridiculous. The logical conclusion to this tcreep is having navboxes for every international competition, series or even one-off match. The line obviously has to be drawn somewhere, and right at the top is the best place to do it: winners of world cups only. wjematherplease leave a message... 11:13, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
- as I have put it in the above message, you cannot ridicule the tournament over a subjective opinion.
- navboxes actually exist for the ashes series, which according to you is supposedely fine but for an actual functioning icc trophy isnt
- why follow one rule for the odiwc and t20wc but not the ct because it does not have "wc" in the name - despite hosts being decided together in the same future cycle, and it actually being an icc trophy just like the others? not to mention the ct predates the t20wc by like almost a decade
- Pharaoh496 (talk) 20:02, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
- You have misunderstood the target of my ridicule, which is your notion that the CT is at the same level as the WC, that you keep repeating. It isn't, and it's not even remotely close, otherwise it wouldn't have been incessant calls to cancel it, which were finally heard (although the ICC subsequently revived their money making venture). Being in a winning WC squad or an Ashes squad is career defining and forever links those players; being in a CT squad, even a winning one, is not and does not. wjematherplease leave a message... 06:12, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
- plenty of examples where it does, so your "is not and does not" argument does not hold. asia cup articles have navboxes too, how will that be defended now? no one cares about the commonwealth games too, and being runners up in a wtc final and playing a world cup group stage trumps winning a ct for folks here apparently. Pharaoh496 (talk) 12:36, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
- How about you provide some evidence of this? For instance, a quote from a player saying "winning the champions trophy was the highlight of my career". I'd get rid of navboxes for all cricket trophies that are not world titles. Spike 'em (talk) 12:56, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
- if one was open minded and unbiased, then the response to your question would win him over
- here
- this too
- this again
- deep in the article

- locked in payroll but it mentions that this had a significance in his career
- how this win elevated his status back home

- nothing short of the reactions as compared to the 2024wc, other than the fact that title had "world cup" and it was the first icc win in 11 years (after the 2013 - ct). it is always - ms dhoni winning all three icc events.
- if someone were to make an argument that no ticker tape parade was made after the 2025ct win, the same thing happened after 2011 cwc win - ipl was due in a week. also, this is a global issue, and in pakistan the 2017ct was celebrated a lot. commemmorative stamps, parades national honours and whatnot.
- Pharaoh496 (talk) 15:02, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
- I don't dispute that players want to win any tournament they enter, or enjoy it when they do, but comparisons between CT and WC are in short supply in your sources, as is players actually saying it was the main highlight of their career.
- Iyer : "Over the moon" but no comparison with WC
- Bravo : "According to Bravo, his first international tournament win definitely makes it into his top moments in maroon."
- Sarfaz Ahmed : Ok, he does describe it as his career highlight.
- Watson : "It was a magical moment", but no mention that it was THE highlight of his career. Elsewhere when asked his career highlights : Winning 2007 & 2015 WCs, whitewashing England in Ashes.
- Martyn : The highlight was someone calling him a donkey after he shoved an administrator, NOT winning the trophy : "That was one of the highlights of my career… someone put my name on a donkey"
- Jadeja : no comparison with proper WC, reporting of him tweeting in memory of CT.
- Fakhar Zaman : "It was special"
- Pant : no mention at all of his views on the CT, all about his early cricket career.
- Spike 'em (talk) 11:41, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- This is honestly ridiculous. People come out with all kinds of hyperbole in the moment, but when sobriety and sanity kick in there isn't a single player who wouldn't trade multiple Champions Trophy wins for a single World Cup or Ashes win. However, back to the question at hand — there are far too many navboxes, to the extent that any benefit they might provide to readers has been drowned in a sea of clutter. wjematherplease leave a message... 12:17, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Indeed, this is getting sidetracked. I've mentioned above : I don't think these navboxes are needed nor useful to help readers navigate between similar articles. They seem to be used more as decoration / bauble-collection, or even worse: as replacement for article content. Spike 'em (talk) 12:40, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- im not necessarily saying keep ct boxes. im saying keep saying rule for all icc tournaments. Pharaoh496 (talk) 19:19, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Ashes - something that concerns two nations and two nations only, wiht no scope or anyone for eternity to be involved. Not saying dont give them their couple hundred navboxes, but dont say people wouldnt trade it for a champions trophy. Pharaoh496 (talk) 19:18, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Pharaoh496: CT is just an filler event to have something every year and is not as significant as World Cups; and if some cricketers may think it as a career milestone that's their opinion.
- ICC themselves have separate website domains for CWC (www.cricketworldcup.com) and T20WC (www.t20worldcup.com) but don't have one for CT, saying about how they treat it and which is not as important as WCs. Vestrian24Bio 13:41, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- It is upto ICC how they want to advertise and showcase the CT. As far as the event is concerned, its a filler event officially when they declare it to be. It recieves similar social media and news coverage officially, which should be termed as a real metric. On players profiles, it comes hand in hand with others as a medal count.
- Its an opinion that it is a filler and less relevant event, no matter how popular the opinion; it does not become a fact.
- Facts dictate that an ICC event with equal coverage should have the same conventions here on wikipedia. Im not saying make navboxes for CT. Im saying make them if they are being kept for the world cups. Pharaoh496 (talk) 14:25, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- World Cups and CT aren't the same, no sources considers them the same, coverage has no impact on navboxes. Vestrian24Bio 14:33, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- The impact any navbox will have is going to help equally to both tourneys, thats the point Pharaoh496 (talk) 19:35, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- Even if the ICC came out tomorrow and stated that the CT is the jewel in the crown of cricket tournaments, we do not have to follow what they say. Wikipedia prefers to follow what neutral, secondary sources that are unconnected to the subject of an article say about it. If the majority of news outlets / the cricketing world treat the CT the same as WC then we would follow that, but they clearly don't. This is still going off on a tangent, the main question should still be : Are these navboxes a help in navigating between related articles? Spike 'em (talk) 15:18, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, ofcourse they are. You're a journalist covering a team, or a writer, you click one players article you know off (Lets say Morgan in 19WC), and you see his entire article. You find the navbox, with the squad listed in proper, and you use it to navigate. No one whos not on wikipedia will know theres a seperate page for these squads, and yet the navboxes are on the bottom on the page. Why was India's performance in 2007cwc bad? Pakistan in 25ct? Lets say someone is covering THAT squad, they see dravids page, or rizwans in the latter case, and come across the navbox giving them what they need.
- Navboxes for these tourneys have been there FOR YEARS helping out.
- Same logic works for all tournaments, including the CT, Asia Cup IPL etc. Pharaoh496 (talk) 19:34, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- You should make your case backed by Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines and not by made-up example scenarios! Vestrian24Bio 13:44, 28 March 2025 (UTC)

I am concerned about the article Ricky Ponting with the Australian cricket team in India in 2008–09 which redirects to 2008-09 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. I thought this was supposed to be merged into the article Ricky Ponting. But someone changed it to a redirect without putting the content actually in either article. Missing photos of cricket grounds in the UK and Ireland
Summer (possibly) is upon us in the UK and Ireland! There are still dozens of major cricket venues that do not have photos. If anyone can knock these off, that would be greatly appreciated!

Reference request/query
Hello all. I was wondering if anyone could help with the below?
- A reference for the First Division of the National Men's League being the highest level of club cricket in Barbados?
- The date and location of Roy Marshall's funeral. I assume it took place in or near Taunton in November 1992?
Mercy Rule / Declaration
I stumbled on a reference to declaration in the article Mercy rule. I have left a proposal for removal on the talk page but I reckon the experts here would have a greater insight if anyone wishes to contribute. Thanks. Leaky caldron (talk) 17:29, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

Nickname in infoboxes
Why are there so many media-related nicknames in cricketers' infoboxes, and why is King Prince Boom Boom Afridi included? Famous footballers do not have nicknames in their page infoboxes. I am not against the stokesy things in Ben Stokes' article, but it should not have been either. (IMO) ইমরান ভূইয়া (talk) 08:03, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
Old style Test Championship / Test Rankings
@OCDD has overhauled the ICC Test Championship related pages, and has added Test Championship appearances and Mace wins to international team infoboxes. Is this valid? There were never any separate Test Championships, it was a continuous ratings system and the team at the top happened to be given the mace to wave around. I would drop any mention of it in the infoboxes, so anyone have any other views? Spike 'em (talk) 10:23, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Source
- From 2003 to 2019 the Test cycle was called the Test Championship which was rebranded into World Test Championship in 2019. The format existed and so did the teams and the Test tours. Not having any mentions of that is a disservice to the functioning of the format. As if no championship existed before 2019. The trophy also remains the same: the test mace. OCDD (talk) 10:35, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- But there were no winners, nor any appearances. It was a continuous system, and the top ranked team got presented the mace and given a some cash if they remained there long enough. England (nor any other team) did not appear in it 17 times, and no team "won" the championship. These parameters are completely meaningless, and there are already parameters that give a team's top ranking. They should be removed. Spike 'em (talk) 10:40, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- They did however award the ICC Test Championship Mace every year, which is the thing that OCDD has been adding to infoboxes. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:45, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, that has always been the ICC trophy for Test formats and it was missing from the infoboxes. Teams have won the Mace prior to the WTC as well. The title has been changed and rebranded into a 2 year cycle championship but the test tours and the trophy remains the same. Even WTC has a points table. The only difference is the number one team plays against the number two in the final to determine the winner. OCDD (talk) 10:50, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- No it wasn't, you are utterly misrepresenting what the mace was. Teams were not "World Test Champions" they were the top ranked team in Tests. Spike 'em (talk) 10:51, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Where have I said the teams were "World Test Champions"??? They were the winners of the Test Championship and won the mace in their respective years because that was the system and the championship ICC used to follow then. OCDD (talk) 10:54, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- They did not win the mace for a year, it changed hands whenver a team took over at the top of the ratings. If a team happened to be top in
MayApril they also got goven some cash. They did not entere each year and decide on a winner. The ratings covered between 2 and 3 years worth of matches, so it was not an annual competition by any means. Spike 'em (talk) 10:58, 11 June 2025 (UTC)

- Did England not have Test tours from 2003 to 2019? Did they not play matches and did they not get points in the ranking table for that? They even won the Mace in 2012. It is their rightful ICC Test trophy. Just because it happened in Test Championship and not the newly rebranded WTC does not mean it did not happen. OCDD (talk) 10:52, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, they had plenty of tours, they were top ranked in Tests for a while and held the mace, but they certainly did not enter 17 separate Test Championships, let alone win any. Spike 'em (talk) 10:55, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- If you don't want to understand the point, that's on you. You were even denying that Test Championship existed. And yet the sources say otherwise. Keep at it. I've made my point. OCDD (talk) 10:57, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- I agree that the ICC called their Test ratings the Test Championship. It was never an annual competition, it was an ongoing rating system. Teams never "won" it, they were the top ranked team. The ratings cover between 2 and 3 years of Tests, disproving your contention that it was an annual competition.
- I wrote huge amounts of the Test Championship page, so don't give me any shit for not understanding it when you are the one unable to comprehend what it means. Spike 'em (talk) 11:01, 11 June 2025 (UTC)

- Why have you listed Pakistan with no Test Mace wins when they held it for 2 months in 2016? This is more proof that the mace was not the prize for an annual competition. Spike 'em (talk) 11:18, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- They held it from August - October 2016, not over the April
-Mayprize period, so your edit to the mace page is wrong. The table on there is nonsense, as the mace changed hands when the lead changed, not at the time of theratings rebase in April / MayApril prize point. About the ICC Test championship mace:
The ICC Test Championship mace is awarded to teams that reach the number-one spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings.
The team that is number-one ranked at the 1 April cut-off date gets a cash award of $1 million. The team placed second gets $500,000, the third $200,000 and the fourth $100,000.
India’s longest tenure at the top was from November 2009-August 2011 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Current Test rankings system was introduced in 2003
- No where does it say it is an annual competition, it makes it clear that the mace gets passed between teams whenever they reach the top. They happen to get a prize if they are top in April. Spike 'em (talk) 11:36, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Looks like this is dubious enough to warrant removal. I happened to notice first thing when a bunch of invalid parameters appeared, so initially reverted some. Whilst we're at it, we could use removing the cup icons from infoboxes under accessibility grounds Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:50, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yep, cup icons have no place in an infobox either. Spike 'em (talk) 11:55, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- As per the above, the mace was not an annual award (my mistake in thinking it was), so all of this mace "information" is made up and incorrect. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:28, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- (-: The ICC would always do a annual press release at the prize point (which I think usually coincided with the annual rebasing of the ratings), so it does lead to a bit of confusion, but it wasn't an April-only award. I can find lots of UGC-type sites that list the April prize winners, but can't see any RS that call them Champions or Winners. Spike 'em (talk) 14:16, 11 June 2025 (UTC)

Jimmy Wootton
Just expanded Wootton. He was one of the leading slow left-arm bowlers in England during the 1880s for Kent. I wonder, given his importance for Kent, if anyone has any further written sources on him. There has to be more! Cheers in advance!
- I doubt there will be much more that is easy to find. An obituary no doubt, but that would require a visit to Canterbury or the MCC library for (which is apparently possible). If I find anything I'll try and remember to add it Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:52, 11 June 2025 (UTC)

Medal templates, hosts, and the WTC in the infobox
There have been discussions in the past about medal templates in the cricketer infobox ([here] or [here] for example). Those I file under "whatever" now, because we're not going to be removing them. There have also been a number of conflicts over the hosts for competitions – the Pakistan/UAE "host" for the recent Champions Trophy, for example caused a range of issues in a number of places, including in infobox medal templates.
Now the WTC and its host status seems to have raised its head, with medal templates suggesting that the "host" is England – on the grounds that the final has been played at Lord's. I'm less convinced of the rationale for this, but it would be useful to try to get some form of consensus I imagine. Does anyone who is not involved in the editing of these have any view that might help resolve this? Thanks Blue Square Thing (talk) 09:00, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- Then remove from infobox of every women's cricket team and indian national cricket team, selective removal causes these issues I saw indian national cricket team with trophies in infobox so I added to others@Blue Square Thing —⚰️NΛSΛ B1058 (TALK) 14:25, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think this is a response to the point I made above, but about the use of icons in infoboxes – which is discussed a little above. Feel free to move this discussion to a more appropriate spot if you wish to.
- I've just pointed out on your talk page that I think they absolutely fall foul of WP:ICON in a number of ways – from an accessibility point of view at least. Given that you did the first revert on my edits I think two minutes or so after I made it, perhaps you might give me a chance to work through all the other teams? That would probably have helped to be honest. I note that you've now reverted your reverts, but I'm not sure whether that's because you agree with my interpretation of ICON or not? Whatever, I'm not doing anything else until we discuss this properly somewhere or other! Blue Square Thing (talk) 14:33, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

What is the consensus?
In order to stop this edit warring and settle a disputed consensus. I am really concerned about edit summaries like this: There’s a reason ICC was removed from the tournament names. That was where consensus was achieved. Stop making up imaginary consensus to suit your edits.
in an edit to Kane Williamson and this: Medal tables have position medals. Start a discussion if you’re have a problem. Your mass changes are disruptive.
in an edit to Ravi Bishnoi. Both were by User:OCDD. Clearly there is a dispute of consensus and we need an Independent Neutral expert to sort both of these disputes. I will abide by the Independent Neutral ruler regardless of whether they rule in Favour of me or OCDD and I ultimately only care about this consensus being upheld regardless of who is correct or incorrect. Only thing I have to argue is that on medal record in favour of words is that these world cups are Independently run by the Cricket without being part of a broader games, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games ETC. Medals are not handed out like One, Two and Three. Actually, I do have another argument after all and that is that the meaning of consensus can be discussed or undiscussed. Although this has not been discussed (Please correct me if I am wrong), editors have generally overwhelmingly agreed on using stuff like Winner, Runner Up over medals and User:OCDD decided to change it without discussion. If a discussion has been cited, please tell me. And most importantly, far more importantly than winning my case or whether me or OCDD are sided with: MAY THE TRUTH WIN EVEN IF IT MEANS I LOSE MY CASE!!! Servite et contribuere (talk) 06:09, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
- Also, I have made a decision just now to forbid myself or User:OCDD from making a final ruling. Thank you Servite et contribuere (talk) 06:13, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
- I'm a bit confused. In Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games medals ARE handed out for first, second and third places. HiLo48 (talk) 07:32, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
- No confusion necessary - Ravi Bishnoi is odd because he did win a medal and was also a runner-up in a competition without medals. I've edited the article to match what it should be without looking at any of the history, and this basically matches what it was before OCDD's initial edit. Plans to get rid of more than a thousand articles about cricketers
Also, how you can help:
I'm sure most of you remember the WP:LUGSTUBS2 discussions. Some editors are trying to move forward with mass removal. One of them has produced lists of cricketers split by nationality on the village pump. Please take a look at these and try to add at least one non-database-type source to each of the listed articles. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:36, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- Of the articles with the template Special draft pending, five are categorised as international cricketers so should be easy to source - Chandi Wickramasinghe Ankur Vasishta, Collette McGuiness, Champa Sugathadasa and Bilal Shah. Hack (talk) 03:09, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- I've worked through the list of 50 British cricketers. Several have already had sourcing added, and there are some that strike me as definite possibilities if anyone has the time or inclination (mainly Essex, Gloucestershire, and Surrey):
- David Gray (cricketer) – redirect to List of Cambridge University Cricket Club players#G for now. There's brief text at CricInfo and an obituary in 2004 Wisden, albeit brief. I imagine a suitably detailed search would probably find more on him (war service, Winchester, Cambridge). I imagine this could be extended
- Arthur Johnston (cricketer) – a candidate for expansion. Played rugby at a high level and there's a prose paragraph in CricInfo already. I suspect sources could be found. Initially I might redirect to List of Essex County Cricket Club players#J as he played the majority of his cricket for Essex
- Alison White (cricketer) – redirect to List of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club players#W initially. Notes say he won the DSO in 1916 and went to Cheltenham and Cambridge. Seems to have later been known as Gordon-White. Born at Sydney NSW. Seems likely that there's more detail here
- Charles Edwards (English cricketer) – certainly has the potential for development. Brief Wisden obit, but he was a colonel in the RASC, MC in 1917 and DSO in 1919. Went to Cheltenham. Born in South Africa. We could initially redirect to List of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club players#E, but this is certainly ripe for expansion
- Arthur Newnham – also played in India and for the Gentlemen. There's quite a detailed obit at Wisden. Army, lt-col, serving mainly abroad. Captained Malvern, so chances are more sources exist. We could redirect to List of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club players#N initially, but I'm fairly certain more sources exist
- Charles Morgan (Surrey cricketer) – quite a detailed Wisden obit and the chances are there will be others. We could redirect in the short term, but I imagine there is enough to develop the article. The redirect would be to List of Surrey County Cricket Club players#M
- Alfred Bashford – the prose at CricInfo suggests that more will be found here – church, Merchant Taylors, hockey, Cambridge etc... CricketArchive adds some detail and there's a brief Wisden obit. We could redirect to List of Middlesex County Cricket Club players#B in the short term, but there are almost certainly sources here
- Barrie Bennett – redirect to List of Cambridge University Cricket Club players#B. Seems to have been in the army so there may be more here
- Cecil Booth (cricketer) – redirect to List of Cambridge University Cricket Club players#B. Played for Surrey Second XI and presumably there will be war service, but nothing obviously stands out
- Charles Brereton (cricketer) – redirect to List of Cambridge University Cricket Club players#B. Was at Marlborough and the name is one of those that crops up in Norfolk sources, so there may well be something there
- Charles Calvert (Cambridge University cricketer) – redirect to List of Cambridge University Cricket Club players#C. Captained Shrewsbury, so there would well be some more to be found
- Alexander Cox (cricketer) – redirect to List of Cambridge University Cricket Club players#C probably. His brief Wisden obit says he was a "well known racehorse owner" so, given when he was alive, there may well be enough sources. Was at Harrow
- This is copied from Wikipedia talk:Lugstubs 2 list. I've already gone through a lot of New Zealanders, and I think every Australian is a least a redirect Blue Square Thing (talk) 09:36, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- For all the ones that have plausible redirects to team list articles, it makes so much more sense to redirect them rather than draftify them, as an WP:ATD. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:11, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- Yes. This was mentioned several times in the original discussion I think. The alternative seems to be that it's moved to draft, I move it back - duplicating the article as the draft is not deleted -, and then redirect the article. Which seems a tonne of work. Redirect is what would almost certainly happen at an AfD I think Blue Square Thing (talk) 15:01, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- Not sure how helpful it is to have the lists at the Village Pump. Should there be a WP:Cric subpage for this? Also isn't very useful to have them in very long lists of 170 players. Did someone already clear letters E onwards? Anyway, here is the Australian list broken down into players by state, which could be useful if we are to just redirect them to the state by state lists of cricketers. The-Pope (talk) 17:12, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
West Australian cricketer tagged list (14) |

- Thanks for breaking the Australians down – that's really helpful. The British list is at Wikipedia talk:Lugstubs 2 list#British list. I'm currently working through the New Zealanders at User:Blue Square Thing/sandbox3#NZ – have 5 Wellingtonians, 16 Canterburians and an odd one to check for sources for. If anyone wants to take a look the list is there and I'll move it across to Wikipedia talk:Lugstubs 2 list when I'm done in a few weeks. Zimbabwe is a short list...
- I think a limit of 1200 was set and the query used worked by first name, so that's why it only gets part way through D. I imagine the plan was to polish those off quickly and then do a lot more in the second tranche. This followed on from WP:LUGSTUBS which considered nearly 1000 Olympians. I've no idea how many of those were brought back into mainspace Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:03, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- Not sure about redirecting ones that have potential, like the colonel above. Then they become invisible and never get expanded :( AA (talk) 12:17, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- If we just started by redirecting the ones that BST has identified as being (apparently) hopeless, that would help a lot. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:22, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- If you can throw a couple of references on to his article it'll help remove the tag rather than redirect. He's one I might get to once the majority of the redirection is done. The list, of course, will be there so can be revisited at any point Blue Square Thing (talk) 13:42, 25 May 2025 (UTC)
As a heads up, we've now got a date of 23 June 2025 for draftification to begin - assuming anyone can figure out an automatic way of doing so. There's a set of instructions at Wikipedia talk:Lugstubs 2 list#2025 procedure for how manage any redirects and ones where the template needs to be removed. There are lists by country with generally my recommendation at the same place. I should think I'll get to everything other than the Indians and Sri Lankans by that deadline (here are just too many from India and Sri Lanka for me to deal with easily). Blue Square Thing (talk) 13:42, 25 May 2025 (UTC)
- I see that Blue Square Thing has started redirecting the Australian players to the state by state lists. Can I ask, to avoid them "becoming invisible", can the state category (ie Category:Victoria cricketers be left on the redirect page? I know it works, and I think it's allowed by the WP:LISTRCAT guideline. The-Pope (talk) 11:53, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I'd like to add them back in, but I'm really concerned that I'm not going to have enough time to get to all of the articles that need to be redirected. My priority at this stage is to do the redirect quickly and then to try to find the opportunity to come back to them once I get the chance. I really appreciate that this is leaving work for other people to clean up, but the alternative is that we lose all these articles to a draft space limbo. I've probably got one or two days before the deadline that I can give even part of to this Blue Square Thing (talk) 12:30, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
- A status report. NZ, Australian, South Africans (with cats - sorry, it was just as easy), Zimbabweans, and the odds and sods all done. British ones that need to be kept have had tags removed, but I'm leaving the others until last. I imagine that it'd be possible for two or three of those to be worked up to DYK level if someone could send a couple of hours on them. I might try and do that for one, but it would be an interesting experiment.
- I've PRODed seven I think – ones that I don't think we'd be looking to keep these days and can't easily find suitable sources for. Keep an eye on the PROD list and feel free to remove if you think they're worthwhile, but I'm not sure it's worth sending these to draft really
- This leaves: Pakistan, Bangladesh,
Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad. I have redirect targets set up where needed – all the West Indians and a few of the others. Then it's India, which someone has done a few of, and Sri Lanka. I really don't think I'll get to those lists in any sensible way. Blue Square Thing (talk) 10:45, 3 June 2025 (UTC)- I think it's good to leave cats on the redirects. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:51, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Update: All but the British, Indians, and Sri Lankans are done. I know what's probably happening to the British articles, so my calculation is that of the 805 articles that have been dealt with (excluding Indians and Sri Lankans), 695 have been redirected to a list of some kind or improved and removed from the list to draft, I've PRODed 7, which leaves 104 to send to draft. It's about 13.8% being drafted or PRODed. I've not calculated how many have been removed from the list. Sri Lankan lists are scarce, so that will probably increase the percentage. I'm not sure about the Indian lists Blue Square Thing (talk) 08:37, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- Update: just the British to do now – got through all the Indians and Sri Lankans pretty much. 65% of Indians redirected; 22% of Sri Lankans Blue Square Thing (talk) 07:52, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
- Update: I'm now done working through these lists and I assume the others will be sent to draft at some point in the near future. There are 287 articles still tagged with template:special draft pending. Checking which articles link to that template is the easiest way by far of identifying them. The majority are south Asian and South African Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:13, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

- There seems to be a really odd inclination in this project to unnecessarily divide articles. Look at 2026 Men's T20 World Cup – Africa Sub-regional Qualifier A, 2026 Men's T20 World Cup – Africa Sub-regional Qualifier B, 2026 Men's T20 World Cup – Africa Sub-regional Qualifier C, and 2025 Men's T20 World Cup Africa Regional Final, which should, as it was for previous tournaments, should just be one article titled 2024–25 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. Can someone please explain why the divide was thought a good idea? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 09:33, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
Edits to Virat Kohli
I've come along to strongly disagree with these edits made by User:OCDD on Virat Kohli in the medal table. The long-standing consensus over the years has been to use words instead of numbered medals. I also strongly disagree with saying simply "The National Team". (Doesn't matter whether it seems obvious of which one it is, there are many out there). The article title changes also did not apply here and adding the hosts to the ICC World Test Championship is obviously WP:OR and/or WP:SYNTH. There has also been a long consensus not to include the Test mace and it is also WP:OR and/or WP:SYNTH to add a location based on where the final series was played. I feel like these edits (To the medal record and opening of National Team)) should be reverted and a consensus should be reached on this. Even after I gave an edit warring warning, they continued to edit war anyways and did not appear willing to collaborate during the talk of the warning. Then when restoring hosts to the ICC World Test Championships, the said they meant posters when they had no evidence to prove what they looked like which is also WP:OR. I think we should discuss this thing short term and them maybe start a long term discussion. Thank you Servite et contribuere (talk) 23:03, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- yeah, the test mace is made up nonsense, and is not listed in reliable sources. Spike 'em (talk) 23:31, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- Spike 'em I've also got to admit I strongly disagree with the changes to the medal record. I am pretty sure the longstanding consensus is to use words instead of numbered medals. Does anyone have any confirmation on this? If this is consensus, it should also be changed back. Thank you Servite et contribuere (talk) 02:52, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- I certainly prefere Winner/Runner-up to 1/2 but not sure if/when consensus was reached on this, but I'll have a look. Spike 'em (talk) 10:31, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- Spike 'em I have three things to say: The first one: Why do I tag your username? To specify who the message is intended to be sent to. Number two, I am pretty we still have to mention which National Team no matter how obvious which national team one thinks it is. And number three, my thought has been that the consensus has been reached via WP:EDITCONSENSUS. Thank you Servite et contribuere (talk) 11:55, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- If you feel that strongly then make the changes yourself. Spike 'em (talk) 13:22, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- Spike 'em The main problem is that it keeps getting reverted. National teams have been specified about basically every athlete that plays International sports. Basically until OCDD came along, no lead said just "The national team" it actually said "The (Whatever country that was, like Australia, India, England, South Africa, New Zealand) national team". Gaining consensus should be needed to make such a change considering it is not a Minor change. Servite et contribuere (talk) 13:50, 26 June 2025 (UTC)

- The only discussions I can find in WT:CRIC go against medal templates, but that seems to make no difference to people adding them.
- Though in a surprising turn, given my dislike of the medal box, it seems I have done some testing on improving it:IB cricketer: Medal.

- Joseph2302 Sorry, but who is making an attempt to make a local consensus? Could you specify please? Thank you Servite et contribuere (talk) 14:26, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- On medal templates, perhaps we need to formally add them to the infobox int he same way they are for sports such cycling where the box is automatically collapsed (as on Chris Froome, for example)? It might help if we had a list of what to include and how to include it - that seems to have been an issue here Blue Square Thing (talk) 08:35, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- Blue Square Thing I think it is better to use Winner/Runner up as of now until further discussion. Association Football articles do it that way and I think it is better (Except for Multi Sport Games such as Olympics) considering these are team sports and not individual sports. Servite et contribuere (talk) 09:20, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- So, Damien Fleming would be correct then? Solid blocks when they're not Olympics or Commonwealth Games and so on? That sounds reasonable to me Blue Square Thing (talk) 10:03, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- Blue Square Thing Good example and yes. Servite et contribuere (talk) 10:13, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- Blue Square Thing For example: A player isn't going to celebrate his/her/their team winning a Cricket tournament that was not a Multi Games event by saying: "WE WON GOLD!", they would more likely say something like: "WE WON THE WORLD CUP". Whereas in a competition like the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics or Asian Games, they are more likely to say they won gold. I totally get OCDD'S argument, but I am pretty sure most Sports tournaments have medals. But it is not in common for someone to call the Winner of an ICC (Men's, Women's, Any Format) Tournament as Gold or Silver Medal Winners. In the Olympics (Summer or Winter), Commonwealth Games, basically everyone says that Gold, Silver (or whatever medal) was Won. I think IIHF is an exemption to this. Servite et contribuere (talk) 10:32, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- OK, so I think people are largely on the same page here. @Spike 'em: are you able to edit the template to bring it in line with the style used on Template:Infobox football biography which seems to auto collapse the medal template section? This seems like a reasonable compromise given that every discussion we've ever had seems to have rejected their use, but we're clearly not going to stop that happening. Then we can work through the, at the last count, 598 pages that use medal templates directly – there are some that use a module to include them which we might not manage to get all of (556 pages use a module of some kind). That's doable Blue Square Thing (talk) 13:24, 28 June 2025 (UTC)

- What's the ordering with these medals then? I've reordered Kohli's to be: WTC > WC > Champ Trophy > T20 WC > Asia Cup > Under19 thing. And within each one, to be chronological? Is that the way other sports do things or not? Blue Square Thing (talk) 13:53, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- Blue Square Thing I also think before OCDD made all these mass changes to the Medal Section that ICC and ACC were included. A question answered on a prior discussion over this was answered by Vestrian24Bio over tournament names regarding article title changes and replied:
ICC was only removed from the titles, yes. The word "ICC" should be used in the lead and infobox still. Other places, we could just go with the article's title.
I would assume that is also the same for ACC Asia Cup which I am pretty sure was listed in medals before these undiscussed mass changes. Servite et contribuere (talk) 14:07, 28 June 2025 (UTC)- @Servite et contribuere I'm sorry, I should've been clearer... I meant lead & infobox in the main event articles such as Cricket World Cup, 2023 Cricket World Cup etc. While as for these (player articles, etc.) while I'm not entirely sure I would prefer to go with the Article's title instead. Vestrian24Bio 16:27, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Blue Square Thing Champ Trophy could come after the T20WC - priority to world championships & world cups - my opinion. Vestrian24Bio 16:29, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I couldn't decide which way to do it and figured that Test-List A-T20 would be an easier way to go, especially given the fairly recent promotion of the T20 WC to that naming style. It doesn't really matter I suppose, but it might be handy to have something we can generally agree on rather than putting all the gold ones first Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:30, 30 June 2025 (UTC)

I removed the tables if year by year runs etc... because I couldn't find a source that easily summarised these. There probably is one. And I worked through the personal, investments and so on section to remove some trivia, repetition, and the press releases that seem to mainly be adverts for brands. Addition of batting strike rate to the info box or career statistics table
I think batting strike rate is an imporant statistic for a cricketer (especially a batter) and must be shown to give an appropriate representation of their career. Especially for batetrs in t20 format strikerate if one of the mos important statistics that represents their performance. Can this information be added through the info box or a career statistics table or something else? Arjunremember (talk) 20:50, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- I replied on the infobox talk page, which is where I saw this first. One solution is that you could work on the strike rate article which has absolutely no prose sources whatsoever. It needs some. Then you could think about a way that we could write about strike rate sensibly in articles. I'm not sure how I'd go about doing so. I imagine it would mainly be relevant to very modern players, almost certainly those playing within the last 10 to 15 years, and almost certainly relevant mainly to those playing limited overs cricket. I guess there might be a case for checkin the Bazball article, which looks interesting at first glance and seeing if there's any crossover as well Blue Square Thing (talk) 21:20, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

Good article reviews!
There are some cricket GA noms at GAN... admittedly all mine :D I wonder if anyone would like to review these, as there is currently a huge backlog?!
- Chris Benham: start nom
- Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie: start nom
- Rowland Prothero, 1st Baron Ernle: start nom
Cheers in advance to anyone who takes these on. Shiny stuff in return! AA (talk) 10:27, 28 June 2025 (UTC)
- @AssociateAffiliate: I've never reviewed a Good Article before, and I've only just recently ended a Wiki-Break, but I'm giving strong consideration towards looking at the Benham article for you. (I want to know the process for when I polish up and submit Cris Tinley's article for it; the DYK reviewer months ago said it was close.) It's short enough that my lack of attention span (or at least my autism) can look through it without getting too tired, but is long enough to be interesting. Since a GA review needs to be better than that, is there a "cheat sheet"/"Good article reviewing for Dummies" kind of thing that I can use to assist, like the template that helps with reviewing DYK articles? I'd look them up myself, but I apparently don't have a clue what search terms I'd use. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 06:21, 7 July 2025 (UTC) (P.S. Shiny stuff is totally optional, even if I give Benham's article the green plus sign.)
- @AssociateAffiliate: I'm still looking at and reviewing Benham's article, though I've realized about 2/5 of the way in that I may be doing the in-progress review incorrectly according to a Wiki-Essay I'm reading about good article criteria. Maybe I'm being too thorough and...uh...bossy, maybe? (Yikes.) I probably need to find an example of someone doing a good GA review for an article on a cricketer, but I forget what's been added recently. Regardless, I hope I'm not in way over my head with this... -- JustJamie820 (talk) 06:37, 9 July 2025 (UTC)

Only down to two things needed (the suggestions are totally optional, but good for polish), though really, I only need to care about the lead instead of one missing hyperlink to a Pro40 season. - Hi JustJamie820, a cheat sheet of sorts can be found at Wikipedia:Reviewing good articles. Please make sure to spot check the sources in the nominated article, to check that there is no WP:OR or WP:COPYVIO. For example, checking the Benham Gets Chance to Impress source at the start of the "Establishing himself at Hampshire" subsection, I can see that being in the second XI, impressing in the first half of the season, Katich being injured, and the match in question are all supported by the source. I don't see any plagiarism either, so I'd note in the review that Benham Gets Chance to Impress was checked and no issues were found. No need to check every source (44!), for an article this length I would personally look at four or five. Best, CMD (talk) 01:35, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Chipmunkdavis: Just 10% of them? Wow, I've probably looked at half of the sources. Oops. :-) I guess I'm thorough like that. I think the only pages I didn't visit directly were the CricketArchive ones; I do have paid access to them, but I was pretty sure that the pages were being used correctly for sourcing. Incidentally, what also helped when I did the GA review was the essay about common mistakes a reviewer makes; this allowed me to soften my original, "bossier" draft into something that was more acceptable for me to feel comfortable to publish. (I did still add suggestions, which I don't think you're supposed to do, but I felt the suggestions would be useful for polish, yet not required for passing GA.)
- Anyway, thanks for popping in and helping out. Also, I felt the same about that "Chance to Impress" article; I also believed it was correctly utilized. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 02:09, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
Ideas on how to "salvage" a draft on a 1990s/2000s Indian cricketer...
Months ago, I produced a draft on a former Rajasthan cricketer, Rahul Kanwat, that was rejected by two other editors; a third I had been in contact with a lot at the time would've done the same. (Then I got petulent and stopped editing.) Since I've come back, I wanted to revisit the article. How can I get this article to pass AfC? It's possible I know the answer myself, i.e. less reliance on CricketArchive, but I remember in February and March exhausting English sources for him (unless I wanted to go match-by-match on rediff.com, which didn't necessarily add a lot in most cases; though it did once or twice), and I don't know any Indian languages. Either way, since I find him notable because of his long tenure with one Ranji Trophy squad (130+ FC/LA matches is no joke), and since I'd hate for it to get deleted, I wanted to see if there was anyone willing to help me out with any aspect of this draft. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 04:06, 17 July 2025 (UTC) (P.S. Even if your help is one word in an article, it would be valuable.)
- Apart from the Rajasthan Royals stuff, everything else is pretty much based on CA only. Adding more independent sources might help. Vestrian24Bio 07:13, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- One set of sources I found is from a Bradford-area newspaper, the Telegraph & Argus, talking about him playing in one of the ECB Premier Leagues in 2008, but I don't know if it's notable that he played in such a league, especially since I can't find him in scorecards for his team on CA. (Plus, the vast majority of players in the (currently) 33 ECB Premier Leagues are probably not notable on their own.) I trust the newspaper to be reliable, but I don't know if the info is trivial or not.
- He also seems to be an advocate for IPL games to be broadcast in Rajasthani languages, but I can only source that to a cricket website's Instagram video...so that's a no for now. I'm not giving up on trying to find sources, though. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 23:47, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Once I figure out a way to do so, I will likely add the mention of him playing in Bradford...the way I wrote the article back in February makes it hard to include it now. It dawned on me that, since the Bradford Premier League has an article on WP, maybe it's not so bad to mention it. I just hope it's enough. Believe me, amid all that distractions in my life, I'm trying. I so wish that I could simply overwrite the redirect and publish it as it is, but I think I was recommended not to do so months ago. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 22:22, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
Sourcing "plain text" scorecards on older Cricinfo pages...preferred over CA?
I wanted to add this to my draft salvaging post, but I figured I'd get more responses if I made it its own topic.
In an effort to make a future, fourth attempt at submitting Rahul Kanwat's article into Wikipedia be successful, I decided to look if some of the CricketArchive pages I've sourced could be sourced to ESPNcricinfo. I've found a couple of scorecards there that are fully updated to the modern CI framework. Conversely, there are a lot of others that are on the old version of the website (old enough to still be advertising the first Stanford 20/20 competiton in the sidebar, yikes) that are basically just plain text, like Kanwat's first match here. They don't have hyperlinks, and often lack automatically-generated accomplishments, like CricketArchive scorecards do. For example, I can't source that Kanwat debuted in this match to CI not mentioning it on the scorecard page. While I find no issue with using old-style CI articles as sources, I don't know how I feel about using their old-style scorecards. I'd much rather use CA due to it having better features. However, I do know that reviewers who have found drafts of mine problematic want me not to source one site so much.
This (finally) brings me to my question. Is it better to source a scorecard that is on a free site but is a basic, plain text page over a nicer, more verifiable scorecard page on a paywalled site? What are the viewpoints of WP:CRIC members on this? -- JustJamie820 (talk) 03:19, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- References are there to verify the information being presented in the WP article. If the CI scorecard does that then how pretty/functionally rich it is should not matter. Spike 'em (talk) 07:03, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- Having said that, just adding different scorecards will not satisfy the SIGGOV point that the page reviewer mentions. Spike 'em (talk) 07:05, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- I understand that scorecards alone don't make an article notable, but the main thing I wanted to do is diversify my scorecard sources so that I'd lessen my chances of getting told not to use CA so much. I'll still look for prose on Kanwat to see if there's more coverage on him. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 19:23, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

Featured List Nomination - List of cricketers with centuries in all international formats
Hi all, I have recently nominated List of cricketers with centuries in all international formats for Featured List status. However I noticed that it has not yet been added to the WikiProject Cricket (unlike a similar list, List of cricketers who have scored centuries in both innings of a Test match), could someone please add it with the appropriate importance rating?
Also, feel free to add any feedback/comments to the Featured List Nomination - Wikipedia:Featured list candidates#List of cricketers with centuries in all international formats.
Thanks
DiamondIIIXX (talk) 05:21, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- @DiamondIIIXX: I didn't feel like saying this in the featured list page (drive-by comments from me have no merit there because I don't think I've ever commented on that page before), but you'll probably be told to remove the Times of India reference. WP:TIMESOFINDIA says it's not fully reliable. If I can't use it to get a draft into the mainspace, as I was told I couldn't do recently, you'll likely be unable to use it in a featured list. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 01:15, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'm using the TOI article as social commentary for the milestone of scoring a century in all 3 formats, so I don't think it's a huge issue. Granted it's not the greatest source, but it took a lot of searching just to find that. Also, I used another source (Wisden) to go along with it. Cheers DiamondIIIXX (talk) 07:53, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Spike 'em I saw your edit removing the "refbomb" - The glut of sources was due to the lack of an updated list from a secondary source so each report of the feat being completed had to have a new reference - hope this makes sense.
- Also, per ChrisTheDude's comments here Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of cricketers with centuries in all international formats/archive1, would you be able to help fix the sorting for the table? I have no experience with those settings he mentions.
- Thanks DiamondIIIXX (talk) 11:06, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- The Wisden link mentions all but one of the male players. We still need to use WP:RS and most of the refs there failed this. As Jamie mentions, for a Featured article you need to be sure of these. Spike 'em (talk) 11:13, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- I've removed the TOI article out of caution. Replaced with Hindustan Times article with similar content. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 11:01, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Not sure if it was quicker than doing manually, but a bit of Regular Expression search and replace should have done this. I've not checked everything, so there may still be some data there in the original format. Spike 'em (talk) 12:12, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

South African teams and the SACB
Does anyone know the current thinking on whether the teams that played in the South African Cricket Board matches (primarily the Howa Bowl) are considered the same teams as those that played in the Currie Cup and other competitions? CricketArchive has them separate, but then it also has Natal and KwaZulu-Natal separate; CricInfo also has them separate in terms of records. The matches were later given FC status (Wisden 2006). People such as Richard Compton (cricketer) and Patrick Compton, for example, we have playing for Natal, but actually played for the SACB team.
I'm currently working on a List of Natal cricketers, and we already have Eastern Province and Western Province lists which may either have people on who shouldn't be or will need people adding Blue Square Thing (talk) 15:39, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
Description of Wisden Cricketers of the Year award for individual player
If we are noting one of the 5 annual Wisden Cricketers of the Year should we use a singular or plural Cricketer(s)
i.e. Is Kane Williamson a Wisden Cricketer of the Year
or Wisden Cricketers of the Year
?
Does it make any difference if listing the awards won by a player? To someone who does not know much about the award, then listing someone as Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2007
sounds more impressive than one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year 2007

Mid-summer cricket ground photo request!
Hello all. It's pretty much mid-summer in the UK, so just putting out there this list of FC/LA/T20 hosting grounds needing photos. I've linked to the English section of the list, but there are separate sections for Ireland/NI, Scotland, and Wales. Also, see the template below with some grounds which includes the national counties aka minor counties, which although not as important as the FC/LA/T20 hosting grounds, it too would be nice to have some photos of their home grounds as well. Happy snapping!
Subtle image edits that have remained undetected for almost 20 years
While browsing the Test cricket article I have uncovered some strange and hilarious image edits by a user "Ricky212" on Commons, when they uploaded them on 17 December 2006.
The image currently used in the infobox for the Test cricket article (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:England_vs_South_Africa.jpg) has been altered from its original state at flickr - https://www.flickr.com/photos/louisr/235969749/. The unused pitch on the leg side has been blurred/smudged, and there have been numerous alterations to the crowd, e.g. tens of red dots used to, I assume, "make the crowd look more full". These dots are easily visible on the white seats in the far left stand. Members of the crowd have been duplicated and pasted, this is visible on the first floor, above and to the left of the Oaklands logo. There are numerous other crowd edits and alterations. They are visible when flicking between the original and the one uploaded. The image was first added to the page on this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Test_cricket&oldid=102146369
But the alterations don't stop there, no. The user also "created" the following image, used in The Gabba - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Australia_vs_South_Africa.jpg. It has been composited from two of the images uploaded by the flickr user. Image 1 - https://www.flickr.com/photos/talisen/125562745/in/album-72057594102425824/ (All rights reserved, non creative commons image), used as the field in the composite. Image 2 - https://www.flickr.com/photos/talisen/125562747/in/album-72057594102425824 (some rights reserved), used as the background/sky. The user has also blurred some image imperfections at point and cover. The image was first added to the page on this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Gabba&oldid=401612660
It is probably worth looking through all their uploads to ensure there aren't any more. The ones I found are already used on many pages.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw all the random edits on the Newlands image! Anyway, would the images require re-uploading or just adding new versions? The Gabba one is using non-free material so I assume will have to be removed completely, and possibly re-uploaded using the one with the suitable rights.
I got a good laugh out of these, I hope you do too. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 11:24, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
CricketArchive as external link
As CricketArchive is behind a paywall, it's usage in external link violates WP:ELNO point 6, as it is a Sites that require payment or registration to view the relevant content
. As such, I don't believe it should be used as an external link, in which case the template to do so- Template:Cricketarchive should probably be deleted to discourage people adding it as an external link. Thoughts? Joseph2302 (talk) 10:47, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Agree, it should be deleted. Vestrian24Bio 12:31, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- The template has a valid use to cite information in-text. Hack (talk) 13:30, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- It shouldn't be being used for in-text citations as per the documentation:
Template:Cricketarchive displays an external link to a CricketArchive web page. Links to cricket player profiles are created with the "id" parameter and links to other pages are created with the "ref" parameter. It is intended for use in the external links section of an article.
This, like other similar sports templates should only be used for external links. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:51, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

- I think its currently in use on just over 3,000 pages. I'd can't think of a use for it, although as some will be used as references it's tricky. Can we get a bot to do the rounds and delete any uses that are in an external links section first? I have no idea if that's possible Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:32, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

- I don't think they need to be removed. In some instances, they it does provide more info than CricInfo. They should be discouraged, and it already has a padlock on it to indicate it's a subscription only link. Some users would have a subscription, and if you are quick with the stop loading button, anyone can still read the site. What would be more useful would be to ensure that it is never used as the source in the infobox. And WP:ELNO only says that "one should generally avoid providing external links" not that you can't. The-Pope (talk) 04:05, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
- What really needs to happen, is they need to be moved out of external links and used as references instead. In many cases they probably already are. The problem is that 3,000 articles is a lot to work through and do that with. I would rather see them removed as external links – their paywall redirect is not the sort of thing an XL should do
- My gut feeling, from looking at the Infobox cricketer maintenance category, is that there aren't any uses of the template as a reference in the infobox, but I might be wrong about that Blue Square Thing (talk) 08:51, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
- I guess one place where its usage is common is Women Cricketers, because CA has the WFC and WLA status included, while CI still does not get its act together. - There's no problem in using CA as a reference, including for the infobox. I would encourage it. The problem is when it's used as an XL – people click those and expect to be able to get to something that summarises the article in some way I think Blue Square Thing (talk) 07:27, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- The conversation has been had before but there has to be a better way of formatting the infobox references than inserting a bare url. Hack (talk) 07:54, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- Agree that bare URL like this should not be used on inline references. Therefore, it seems there is no valid use for the template- as it isn't a valid external link, and the template should not be used for inline citations either. That being said, would be good to have a plan for cleaning up inline references using this template before I start a TFD. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:55, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

- Late to the party, but I agree with this comment and its replies. AP:ELNO indicates that such links should "generally be avoided" not that they musn't be used. I would always avoid Cricket Archive due to the paywall, and make sure that the infobox points to Cricinfo. However the point about women cricketers still remains true. Bs1jac (talk) 16:06, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- CricketArchive, to me, has a little bit more accuracy than ESPNcricinfo because all of the matches that are credited to a player have scorecards. For example, prior to my Wiki-Break, a player whose article I created was found to have an extra first-class match and four extra wickets on CI that CA does not have anywhere. That doesn't mean it didn't happen, of course, but I'd rather trust CA's figures for now because their figures are verifiable. We shouldn't exclude the site as an infobox source, though as an external link, it's a bit unnecessary, because if you're sourcing just the main player page, it's likely duplicating what you've already sourced in the infobox. -- JustJamie820 (talk) 23:05, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
- CA went behind paywall in 2015. For old stuff, there is an option to use pages from web.archive.org - like those leading from https://web.archive.org/web/20140922064116/http://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Seasons/index.html - if it is essential, like for some first class scorecards and pages of ancient players. For scorecards from Test series pages, I occasionally replace CA with CI because it is very irritating to hit the paywall while looking up something. Tintin 07:28, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
Who (or what) do national cricket teams represent?
An edit (by @Servite et contribuere) and revert (by yours truly) on West Indies cricket team raises a couple of questions:
- Does a national cricket team represent the country or just the cricket players of that place?
- In the case of a trans-national teams (like the Windies) , do they really represent a region, even though large parts of it [do] not play cricket?
Servite replaced a link to West Indies with a piped link to Cricket West Indies in the lead sentence (representing the West Indies
), which I reverted (there is also already a link to CWI later in the sentence). All of the teams that represent a clearly identifiable country link to that country. Ireland says represents All-Ireland
whereas England says represents England and Wales
and links to Cricket in England and Cricket in Wales instead of the actual countries. West Indies also includes countries such as Cuba / Haiti, Domincan Republic who don't play much cricket, and aren't listed as members of the ICC (though Cuba used to be a member).
I would still say that the Windies cricket team still represents the region, rather than just the administrative body, and there needs to be a link to the region at the begining of the article. Spike 'em (talk) 09:32, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- I think at some point we need to tell people what the West Indies is, geographically. It's a term that might not be well understood by people who may refer to the area as the Caribbean. The wording might need tweaking, but I'm not sure how we can do that in the lead without being too complex. It's probably as good as we're going to get it as it already is – the detail can go later in the article Blue Square Thing (talk) 10:14, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- Spike 'em These questions are worth answering. First of all, I am going to say that it neither represents the country or the cricket players of that place, but the governing body instead. And I wouldn't be against updating it to say that the team represents Cricket West Indies and for other cricket nations. Now to another one, Cuba is more complicated because I don't think there is any way in the world the Cuban government would allow its players to play on a multi national cricket team. Now back to what the Windies represents, I think it is best to go with what the West Indies officially represents and not to include places that are only included on a regional basis by name. What's next? Saying that the Sydney Roosters represent all of Sydney in rugby league? These are sports (Rugby league at least in Australia) that set out very clear geographical representation guidelines. Servite et contribuere (talk) 10:44, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- Can of worms stuff here. Over the history of international cricket, national teams have come into existence in diverse ways. In England, for example, for much of the 20th century, the England Test team was actually organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club. HiLo48 (talk) 11:04, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- I did a quick straw poll of a couple of national teams in other sports : Football, Ice Hockey, Field Hockey, Water Polo, Basketball & Rugby League articles state the national team represents the country; Rugby Union and Netball state the team represents the national governing body. Most of the sports stating the country then mention the national governing body soon afterwards. I think cricket articles should continue to do link to the country and add explanations where necessary. Spike 'em (talk) 11:08, 31 July 2025 (UTC)

- Technically, football national teams represent FIFA member associations, which represent mostly but not exclusively sovereign nations. Hack (talk) 15:55, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- I agree. As much as they are the de facto representatives of the country (and in some countries the government influences selection) they are in all practical aspects simply representing the organisation that selects and pays them. Which, for most international sports, is the recognized & affiliated association or board. The board or association represents the country or region, because I don't think anyone had held a national vote to select a team (yet). The-Pope (talk) 16:07, 31 July 2025 (UTC)

- I think this is correct, i.e., the team technically represent the national association. But common understanding would be that it represents the country/territory/region. Merging Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, Pataudi Trophy and Anthony de Mello Trophy
(Linking for quicker access - Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, Pataudi Trophy, Anthony de Mello Trophy)
Should the three articles be merged? I feel as though there is a lot of duplication in the three articles and could be combined into one (Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy) with sections on the Pataudi and Anthony de Mello trophies. Also, I think rewriting the articles would be a good idea as some parts are unclear or confusing (in Anthony de Mello Trophy it states "When the matches are played in England, the trophy was called as Pataudi Trophy" which is a contradiction, or at the very least could be written better) DiamondIIIXX (talk) 20:08, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- An argument against the merge is that Anthony de Mello trophy was used for all Test series in India in the 1970s and 1980s - or at least when a trophy needed to be presented - not just India-England matches. It just stopped being awarded at the turn of the 1990s and reappeared as an India-England trophy in 2012. If you scroll this twitter thread - https://x.com/tintin1107/status/1526890159052312576 - there are some presentations in non-England matches in the 1970s and 1980s.
- Another problem is that it did not start in 1951 and was probably first awarded at the end of England's tour of India in 1972-73. BCCI erroneously put the start date as 1951 in a press release in 2012 and it was widely reproduced in reputed sources like The Hindu. I guess it will be impossible to correct this in Wikipedia now. Vogler
Was the demon South African legspin/googly bowler of 1907 Bert Vogler, as Cricinfo has it, or Ernie Vogler, as CricketArchive prefers? His forenames included both Albert and Ernest, so either is plausible. The article, btw, is pretty much a cut-and-paste of the Wisden obit, and gives no clues. Johnlp (talk) 11:08, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- I think in the past I've always seen him referred to as Bert, never as Ernie. OTOH, I've normally found CA to be more reliable than Cricinfo. I've looked in a few likely places in the cricket books I have, but they all refer to him by only his surname. I suppose it's possible that Bert was commonly used as his nickname in England and Ernie in South Africa or vice versa. JH (talk page) 15:36, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- Doing a web search, this obituary (originally from Wisden?) looks like it might be the most authoritative source: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/albert-ernie-vogler-155706 It has the title Albert ('Ernie') Vogler. So I think I now cast my vote for Ernie. JH (talk page) 17:18, 30 July 2025 (UTC)

IP vandal
Just a heads up about an IP vandal that appears to be using a VPN (locations vary from the UK to Saudi), but all the IPs are making the same moronic edits. I suspect an old face might be behind these. I have thousands of cricket articles on my watchlist, so the vandalism gets spotted pretty quickly. Some recent examples:

Cricket grounds used for associate nation T20Is
Apologies if this has been discussed previously. I have worked regularly on associate internationals since universal T20I status began in 2018, including the list of grounds (and the women's equivalent). One small thing that irks me slightly is when grounds used for a few international games between 'smaller' associates, that will clearly never meet notability criteria for an article, have an article created and immediately redirected to the men's national team article. A few exmaples are Mladost Cricket Ground, Valburga Cricket Ground and Velden Cricket Ground.
- Men's national teams pages have links to grounds that are self-redirects.
- The grounds list has lots of links that a reader would expect to go to a ground, but do not.
- Why redirect the men's team and not the women's team (especially if both have played at the ground)? If they are to be created, a redirect to the national assocation might be better
I feel that such grounds should simply be left unlinked. Wanted to gauge opinion on whether a list could be prepared and the articles removed (or otherwise change to the national association). I know the articles are redirects so it may not be considered worth doing, but I feel if we don't think they are required, we need to do something as the editor who makes most of them has said that they do so for consistency with previous entries. Bs1jac (talk) 16:27, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Firstly, the discrepancy between how women's the men's cricket is treated is something that, given the last five years or so, could use addressing in general terms.
- Specifically, unless we want articles along the lines of List of international cricket grounds in Austria (which is a possibility), I imagine that a redirect to something like Cricket in Austria or Austrian Cricket Association are best – although the later seems only to deal with the men's team of course. Because, why not.
- Or there's List of Twenty20 International cricket grounds and List of women's Twenty20 International cricket grounds. I wonder whether they might be merged and, perhaps, simplified a little? Blue Square Thing (talk) 11:44, 4 August 2025 (UTC)

How to reference a message in a closed cricket historians' email group
Hi all, I'm a member of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians email group and a member recently noted that Patrick Ohlstrom is unique in first-class cricket for being dismissed hit wicket in his only completed innings and having a hit wicket as his only wicket.

Source for Charlie Llewellyn's cause of death

Cricket grounds in Darwin
There are two cricket grounds across the road from each other in the Marrara Sporting Complex in Darwin. One we call Marrara Oval (TIO Stadium) and the other Marrara Cricket Ground (DXC Arena). Both have hosted First-class and List A cricket quite recently, with national A teams from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh playing at both venues in the last couple of years. ESPNcricinfo lists the Marrara Cricket Ground as "Marrara Oval" and Marrara Oval as "TIO Stadium". Even more confusingly, the CricketArchive combines the two as Marrara Cricket Ground. Any idea how this could get fixed? Hack (talk) 10:28, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

Harry Parks (cricketer)
If any project members have the time, I would appreciate some reference improvement on this page. The Wisden obituary isn't linking properly anymore for one (goes to a generic website main page), and the article's only viewable reference is a database. It could end up at AFD in the current climate as a failure of WP:SPORTSBASIC, but I'm assuming, given the extent of the career, that sources with WP:SIGCOV likely exist on this person. As an American, cricket isn't at all in my wheelhouse. Thanks for any help in article improvements in advance. I'd like to add Parks to the Deaths in May 1984 list once the obituary gets fixed and I have a source I can use. I tried locating it without luck on the Wisden website (which obviously I haven't figured out how to navigate well). Best wishes.4meter4 (talk) 15:10, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

Remove 'last match' field from active teams' infoboxes.
Pages like India national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team, and I am assuming the rest, too, mention in their infoboxes the last games played in every format by the respective team. Given the frequency with which these teams play, is there really a point in us keeping a track of every single match and making an edit every few days to this? I don't feel it is very encyclopaedic. Information that changes often doesn't need to be included in Wikipedia articles.
I want to propose exclusion of the latest games played by an active sports team from the infobox.
Posting a link to this discussion in WP:SPORTS as well. Kingsacrificer (talk) 18:37, 14 September 2025 (UTC)

- I don't think a field needing to be regularly updated is a reason to remove it from an infobox. There is an "As of date" parameter to show how recently the IB has been updated. Spike 'em (talk) 11:03, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, but agree with you that it's trivia and doesn't add anything important to the page. Kingsacrificer (talk) 13:09, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- I agree. This can easily be updated and there are plenty of users out there who will update the most recent match. Servite et contribuere (talk) 23:25, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
- Doing a comparison to other templates in Category:National sports teams infobox templates (which I added {{Infobox cricket team}} to), none of the other sports have a
|Latest game=, and about half have|First game=(often alongside|Biggest win=and|Biggest defeat=). The cricket team infobox is far more extensive than the others, so maybe it is worth having a wider discussion about it than just the 2 parameters mentioned here. - I don't think there is a WP:SPORT guideline / template for these infoboxes, so we don't have to mimic the other sports. To repeat what I said above though: the updateabilty should not be a concern, there are many editors who update these articles in good time after games have been played. Spike 'em (talk) 08:56, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- I don't see any reason to remove it. Not just the teams, also venues and cricketers infobox have first & last match fields, but they are updated from time to time, by dedicated editors. Vestrian24Bio 15:03, 15 September 2025 (UTC)

Ravichandran Ashwin Sydney Thunder
One thing I need to raise here: I boldly removed the Sydney Thunder from list of Ravichandran Ashwin teams over long standing consensus, but @Rfakjunkie still reverted despite them being let know here:User talk:Rfakjunkie#No teams until match played. This could very well be a case of WP:NOTLISTENING. Anyways, fact of the matter is: the Sydney Thunder should be removed until he has played a senior match for them. Servite et contribuere (talk) 02:10, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- I would like to clarify that once a franchise or domestic club formally signs or drafts a player, that player is considered part of the official squad list for the season, regardless of whether they have played a match yet. This is how squads are recognized under international cricket board regulations and MCG rules globally. Including Sydney Thunder in Ashwin’s infobox reflects this verifiable and published squad membership. I see no rational for removal unless there is a specific Wikipedia policy or guideline that explicitly prohibits listing teams before debut, removal on the basis of an undefined "long-standing consensus" cannot override WP:V and WP:CRIC. Rfakjunkie (talk) 05:32, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- No, it's not appropriate to add them until they play for the team. There is a long standing consensus on this and we have agreed on multiple occasions that someone should actually play for a side before we list them. This is different to what some other sports do. That's OK, we're allowed to do that based on consensus at WP:CRIC – I don't understand why you've quoted this above at all when it says "appeared as a player" a number of times and doesn't seem to say anything about when we should or shouldn't include in the infobox. There are multiple examples of players withdrawing from leagues, sometimes due to injury, and never playing for teams.
- This is practical on a number of levels, not least because the infobox represents a summary of their actual career and, unlike the football infobox, for example, doesn't include numbers of games played (which would be problematic to source reliably). We also have quite a limited number of slots available for teams.
- You want a policy for this? WP:CON does it nicely and seems to render your argument slightly less convincing Blue Square Thing (talk) 10:06, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- Only if they play- we don't need to bloat infoboxes with teams that players signed for but never played for. This is why we have the existing consensus. And infoboxes are meant to summarise a player's career- adding teams they never played for is not a summary. Joseph2302 (talk) 17:59, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
Test cricket New section
Hey all, I recently added a new section to the Test cricket article covering the history for the 1900s. It's quite a sizeable chunk (~61,000 bytes, about half the article total), so I was looking for feedback on if you thought it needed to be split out into its own article, or if it's ok as-is. Some fresh eyes going over it could be helpful too, in case I've missed something or if something could be written better. I am also thinking of adding a shorter section on the history/developments in the 2000s. Cheers DiamondIIIXX (talk) 07:40, 29 September 2025 (UTC)
- It's is far too detailed, and much of it not directly related to Test cricket specifically, more a history of the ICC / cricket in general. Bodyline should be a couples of sentences, not multiple sections with individual match reports. Section should also be titled "Twentieth century", as 1900s implies the first decade of the century to me. Spike 'em (talk) 07:59, 29 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I included the sections on the ICC as they are the ones who essentially determine who plays Tests and also write the Laws, which is quite important. Yes, I thought the section on Bodyline was a bit long, would you be able to help condense it? Thanks DiamondIIIXX (talk) 05:59, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- The ICC does not write the Laws : the responsibility for that lies with the MCC. The content should all relate directly to Tests, so details of new teams seems valid to me, changes to the size of the wicket not. There are also far too many one or two sentence sections, merge them into larger ones. Spike 'em (talk) 08:52, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Phil Mead review request
Hello all. If anyone could spare some time to review Phil Mead's article, it would be much appreciated. Going to aim for FA on this one. Cheers, AA (talk) 19:46, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
- A couple of things that A.A. Thomson wrote about him have stuck in my mind, which I'll try to locate. One was that on the famous occasion when Hampshire were dismissed for 15 by Warwickshire (before going on to win the match), Mead made something like 7* and was baffled by the collapse, saying that he didn't face a single ball that he couldn't middle. The other was that when he returned to Australia in 1928-9, 17 years after his first visit, an Australian said to him that he remembered his father from 1911-2. JH (talk page) 08:42, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
- I did see the remark made to him on the 1928-29 Australian tour, but thought it was said in a more jokey manner and wondered if it was WP:TRIVIA? The quote from the 1922 match would make a good addition to the part of the article which speaks about the match. I checked Thomson's Odd Men In, but couldn't find the quote. Be great if you could locate that :) AA (talk) 11:00, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- I have found the quote on the Warwickshire website AA (talk) 18:39, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- In a remarkable coincidence, I attempted to add Mead's comment and got an edit conflict when I attempted to submit it as you'd simultaneously been adding the same info. The only difference was that my source was an article in Arlott on Cricket. The two sources are word for word identical concerning what Mead said. (I think the remark made to Mead in 1928-9 is worth putting in, as I see an occasional bit of humour as a good thing. Serious doesn't have to mean solemn JH (talk page) 08:30, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- Nothing more annoying than an edit conflict, after all these years, still annoys me! Thanks for adding the comment, was thinking about including it this morning. Actually adds to the article and emphasises the time between tours for him - like you say, serious doesn't have to mean solemn. Think it's ready for FAC now. Cheers! AA (talk) 10:27, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- Probably not worth including but there was a funny moment in 1950, where the New South Wales Cricket Association president tells the father story, which Freddie Brown had been telling all tour with his own twist. Hack (talk) 12:17, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

- I wonder if anyone knows when a stand at Northlands Road was named after him. I know one was, as it is briefly mentioned in a source (plus I've seen the old sign), but not sure when exactly, presumably mid-1950s when the ground was redeveloped. AA (talk) 19:43, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

GA article reviews
Hello all! I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to review some GAN's I have listed at the moment? I'm more than happy to review any cricket articles in return that you might nominate for GA class.
Example review here.
Review the Draft:2025 Abu Dhabi T10
The 2025 Abu Dhabi T10 will be the ninth season of the Abu Dhabi T10. The matches are played with 10-over-a-side format with a time duration of 90 minutes. The tournament will be played from 18 November to 30 November 2025 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Deccan Gladiators are the defending champions, having claimed their third title in the final of the previous edition. Vikas265 (talk) 06:49, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- Agree- not notable, don't need season articles. Also, the purpose of this talkpage isn't to demand reviews of your drafts, that's what WP:AFC is for. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:28, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
- I see 2025 Abu Dhabi T10 has been created, which is likely why this draft was blanked by Vikas and the page subsequently deleted. I wonder quack quack? AA (talk) 21:36, 22 October 2025 (UTC)

ICC Tournament Logos in InfoBox
One thing I wanted to raise, @OCDD has been changing a bunch of logos which I have ended up reverting on ICC Tournament Articles, , . Now, I am not going to talk about them moving the page, but above the diffs of the image in the InfoBox. Look here: and here: . Anyways, here's another revision of OCDD'S preferred image in which they apparently claim consensus is needed for that simple revert (Appears they are claiming ownership of articles in my view): , , and now @Vestrian24Bio added this logo: . Whilst I do think it is better than the previous ones, I strongly disagree and think we should use logo's in the InfoBox like the one on this revision: . Anyways, I also think this should be the same for all ICC Tournament InfoBoxes, Men's Tournaments, Women's Tournaments, Under 19 Tournaments and Everything. As for tournaments with no file logo that is similar or reflective of the tournament in general and just a specific tournament, I think it would be better to just have no logo. I do think keeping it up to date by uploading a new logo every year can be done, but here are reasons I strongly disagree:
- 1 We should be trying to reflect the tournament in general and not just one logo of tournaments that can change every year
- 2 More importantly, ICC tournament logos are going to change almost every tournament. See how different they are here, just for some examples. See here and look at the logos: 2007 World Twenty20, 2009 World Twenty20, 2012 World Twenty20, [[2016 World Twenty20]]. 2024 Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. 2023 Cricket World Cup 2019 Cricket World Cup 2015 Cricket World Cup 2011 Cricket World Cup.
- 3 Unlike tournaments say like NRL (You may not know what this is unless you are from Australia or New Zealand), NFL, NHL, MLB, Premier League, NBA, which play their season every year and thus there are going to be many seasons before a logo change, ICC and World Cup events in General, (E.G. FIFA, World Rugby) are likely to either have a new logo for the new tournament (Which usually takes place only every 4 years), or only have the same logo for only a few years, and thus very few tournaments, if not only one get played with it, making it not reflective of the tournament in general.
Anyways, I would like to know what you think of whether you Support or Oppose this idea of logos in InfoBoxes. Servite et contribuere (talk) 01:42, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- We definitely shouldn't be using a logo from a single instance of a WC as the logo for the top-level article. Some sizes of the Women's WC logo have been badly trimmed and you can still see the very top of the INDIA 25. The same goes for this which you can see the top of INDIA & SRI LANKA 2026
- Is there any indication that the top part is a generic logo that will be used across different instances? (The men's T20 one has been re-used, but with different colours)
- If we can't find a suitable long-term logo, would it be possible to use a photo of the actual trophies instead? Spike 'em (talk) 14:58, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- Spike 'em If there is consensus to use trophies instead, that would be fine. That is how it used to be for a long time (I think for a long time). Here is just a revision (Just one I picked that did have it): . Thanks giving that idea. I think we should, but before adding it in itself, I would actually prefer to actually hear from other editors as well to see if they agree or disagree. At bare minimum this should not be used. As for the trimming point, I actually didn't notice that, which for me is kind of surprising as I feel like I am able to read and see things within like a flash. Servite et contribuere (talk) 15:15, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- Comment: There are these pages on Logopedia,
- From these, it's clear that ICC has been reusing same logo designs with different colors & subtitles since 2021 at least, although it differs historically. The contemporary solution would be to use the generalized logos.
- Also, there's a copyright problem with existing trophy images (some latest ones at least), will post about it soon... Vestrian24Bio 16:47, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- Vestrian24Bio Don't think Logpedia looks like the best source in my view, also what is the copyright problem? I am open to just having no image whatsoever. If that works. Servite et contribuere (talk) 17:46, 22 October 2025 (UTC)

- Specific logo on specific event pages, general logo on the parent pages most of the logos are copyrighted and this is the only way that we satisfy WP:Image policy and meet all of the WP:NFCC. Any attempt to use general logos in specific event articles violates WP:GETTY point 14, and putting an event logo into the general article also fails NFCC. This imgae policy overrides how other people/websites choose to use logos. Joseph2302 (talk) 06:46, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi all. Can Nepal Premier League is regarded as the highest domestic T20 league? Like other leagues i.e Indian Premier League, Lanka Premier League etc. Fade258 (talk) 14:19, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- It is the highest league in Nepal, however that doesn't grant automatic notability for anything (I believe there's a depreciated notability guideline that used to assert automatic notability for this). Certainly the coverage of NPL is lower than IPL and even probably LPL, and coverage is what's important for creating articles. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:09, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Joseph2302. Thanks for the clarification. Fade258 (talk) 02:39, 31 October 2025 (UTC)
- I'm working on a new proposal for notability of cricket competitions, but it will take a few more weeks to be presented. Vestrian24Bio 16:29, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Vestrian24Bio. Sounds good. Hope it helps to improve the notability guidelines. Fade258 (talk) 01:48, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
Is the Southern Cross trophy really a perpetual trophy?
The second least most recent perpetual trophy is the Sobers–Tissera Trophy which was last held in 2021–22. The Southern Cross Trophy was last held in Australia in 2003–04, over 20 years ago - making it the least most recent perpetual trophy. Does the Southern Cross Trophy really still deserve to be designated as "perpetual" if it has not been contested in that long? DiamondIIIXX (talk) 08:56, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
