Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Kiribati

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Kiribati, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Kiribati, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Kiribati articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

2. Kaaitara
3. Kauamwemwe
4. Matanibike
5. Onauea
6. Paris, Kiribati
7. Tabwakea

At the time of posting this notice, there were 22 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

I'm working my way North to South, updating and cleaning up articles and adding references; so far I have revised Makin, Butaritari, Marakei and Abaiang. Which brings me to the hardest one of all, Tarawa. I believe that the Tarawa article should be mainly about the geography of Tarawa and its lagoon; most of the history, economic and cultural aspects are quite distinct between South Tarawa and North Tarawa (an article that doesn't exist yet, but I think the right thing to do is create it). I hope this doesn't appear to others as a sweeping change, and of course I will confer or revert if anyone disagrees. Thanks, --Obkiribati1 (talk) 09:40, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

“I-Kiribati” means in the Gilbertese language, a people from Kiribati 🇰🇮. This is not an adjective or a qualifier. To say a French guy, you say I-Buranti; a Japanese woman, I-Tiaban; a New Zealander, I-Niutian… and so. But because some people may think that I-Kiribati could also have other uses. To tell the truth, we shouldn’t adopt in English forms that have their own grammar and use. We cannot write I-Kiribatis (plural) because -s is not the mark of plurality in Gilbertese. Today I have discovered the Category “I-Kiribati law”… a complete non-sense. In the same case, why should an old men who died in 1944, be placed in the category « I-Kiribati people », a complete anachronism. Kiribati word started to be written in European languages publications not before 50s. Some clean up has to be done, if you all agree on the topic.-Arorae (talk) 14:53, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Kiribati/member → Template:User WikiProject KiribatiTemplate:User WikiProject Kiribati – default namespace, as per naming convention — currently a redirect. • @Est. 2021: Template:User WP Kiribati is another related WikiProject template to which it redirected for a long time until a retargeting by you.   @CX Zoom: The redidect had no transclusion back when I uncontroversially retargeted it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Kiribati/member, an already-existing userbox made by the project itself.   Fair thing, but I'm still wary of the suggestion that two this closely named templates have different userboxes. Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

Kiribati is listed as a least-developed country for the purposes of this contest, which means Kiribati-related submissions to the contest will get a multiplier in points. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

WikiProject Kiribati, the Developing Countries WikiContest will be returning for a second year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.

In other news, we have a new face on the coordinator team this year: last year's sixth-place finisher, Arconning (talk · contribs)! The coordinators would like to extend a sincere thanks to Ixtal (talk · contribs), who is leaving the team, without whom the contest would not exist. After feedback from contestants last year, the scoring rules are undergoing some modifications; the new rules and a summary of the changes made will be posted to the contest talk page shortly.
