 Courtesy link: Conscription in Finland

on the page about conscription in finland, the article repeatedly talks about men having to do conscription. but strictly speaking it's not men, but everyone who is legally identified as a male. and i presume this is repeated a lot in similar articles. would it be reasonable to change pretty much every mention of men in the article to something like "people legally identified as men"? i don't believe there's really an easy term, and it would therefore probably make the article just generally much more complicated to read, but it would also be more factual. is there like a consensus on shit like this? am i being stupid Warpfrz (talk) 21:31, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

I suspect our sources say "men", so unless we're using a source that specifically points to the trans concern, this would not be an appropriate change. Since we're talking about a legal matter in Finland, I think people would perceive it as "a man under the law" anyway, making the complication unneeded. (And even if we had a source, it may make sense to make a single aside, i.e. men (which as viewed under the law includes trans women and not trans men)^[1].

A UCOC case was recently accepted that concerns admins on the Swahili Wikipedia banning editors who attempt to remove hate speech and misinformation about gay and transgender people. This will be an interesting test case of whether the UCOC can actually address these issues. The case is Universal Code of Conduct/Coordinating Committee/Cases/Sysop abuse in Swahili Wikipedia. I think its likely that the article may be vandalised and nominated for deletion etc given the political climate in the US, especially in Florida. Marcy Rheintgen was the first person to be arrested and jailed under an anti-trans law for washing her hands in a women's bathroom in the Florida State Capitol building.

Hello everyone. I am hoping someone on this project might be able to help.

Talk:sj Miller, there is a thread Reinstatement of pronouns started by myself. The article explaines in the personal life section about sj Millers choice to use sj Millers name and not any pronouns. This is well referenced in the article. I think this part of the discussion is sorted now.

I'm looking for advice on how we write about people who do not use any pronouns. Writing isn't one of my strong points at the best of times. Is anyone willing to take a look at the article to see if the flow can be improved?

I wondered if there was any advice in the form of policy, essays etc about how we approach writing about agendered people. @Gaismagorm: made what I thought was a good suggestion, maybe it would make sense to update the rules for pronouns in articles, and get an overall consensus on how wikipedia should approach agender folks in general. Personally...All sympathy and apologies, but I'm not going to break English over a personal preference. Be accommodating in as much as is practical, but the point at which that makes things more difficult for readers then it's counterproductive to our purpose. Something like Miller was disowned by Miller's family is getting into territory where it becomes difficult to read. I'm fine with singular they, but that's widely understood by readers and speakers. This is why I wanted to ask for advice. Some things could be edited yo read better, but I would struggle with some of the edits such as Miller is also a cat trainer and has Miller's own cat parkour training business as it doesn't read right. I proposed, Miller is also a cat trainer and owns a catparkour training business but I am stuck with other edits, such as you mention above @GreenMeansGo. I've tried reading the article using (in my head) 'sjmiller' as a pronoun, which makes a little more sense but it isn't a suitable way to look at it as a Wikipedia article.

The problem is that something like Miller was disowned by Miller's family makes your brain twitch for a second and wonder if there's two Miller's we're talking about. We would always use a pronoun if spoken aloud candidly. Have to keep in mind that we're shooting for about a college freshman level, or someone who speaks English as a second language. We don't have to be a jerk about it, but it remains that our primary purpose is to be understood. GMG^talk 21:49, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

• I agree with GreenMeansGo on this. We can prefer Miller's name wherever possible, but when it begins to break the rules of English grammar, we should probably rely on the singular they, as the closest we can get to respecting Miller's preferred pronouns, in order to facilitate understanding by the reader.

It's an interesting question that might be worth further discussion by the project at some point. I think there's a place for Pelosi, Kylie Minogue, Cher, and other similarly-situated people within the ambit of "LGBTQ+ Studies", but it does sometimes result in notifications regarding non-LGBT people. Our alerts page, for instance, notifies us of a discussion re sexual anomaly and a nomination about the blue Gucci dress of Harry Styles, and we routinely get notified about drag. Reviewing articles to confirm they match our expectations for scope is definitely a good thing. I regularly review the newly assessed articles at WP:LGBTQ+/Quality, and articles with little to no LGBTQ+ content get added near-daily. Generally what I look for is at least a paragraph of content clearly on-topic, though of course that is a standard we could discuss. Category:LGBTQ Roman emperors was systematically emptied on May 8. An editor attempted to revert the emptying on May 19, but by then the category had already been deleted due to being empty. I believe the appropriate process would have been for the category to be taken to WP:CFD so the merits could be properly discussed, rather than manually blanking it. Drag pageantry could use the attention from some experienced editors. I have been arguing that the page should not include these long lists of unsourced winnders & runners up of pageants. Some have their own articles, so perhaps these lists could go there, but others don't appear notable in themselves. Wikipedia isn't a directory or place to archive the results from these events, and I've tried to create a version that is more aligned with policy. There are two (relatively inexperienced) editors who disagree, and I fear they aren't making valid policy-based arguments, but I don't want to escelate an edit war. I think it is too soon. I doubt there has been a substantial change in usage in the 6 months since the above discussion, or the <10 months since the series of discussions surrounding the most recent move. I cannot locate Talk:LGBTQ_people#Requested_move_14_August_2024—not sure what happened to the talk page history there. There was follow up discussion here and a move review and I'm sure other discussions. (I did not participate in any of these and became aware of the history more recently while participating in a related RM.) Unless there is evidence of a substantial change in usage or a new set of arguments that have not been properly considered, I'm not sure there will be a different outcome. Ngram is still only updated through 2022 and shows LGBTQ with a substantial lead and trending upwards.   Gender essentialism is a different (if related) subject. For this particular term, the second citation (From Dogwhistles to Bullhorns: Unveiling Coded Rhetoric with Language Models) explicitly includes this term in a list of examples of what it repeatedly refers to as 'hate speech'.   In all seriousness, that might not be (anywhere near) the best sourcing for it, but it was in the body, and it was supported by a source on the claim itself. Between those facts, the justification for removal was shaky at best and dishonest at worst.

  I'm actually a big fan of formatting the lead to summarize the body. However, with many shorter articles (such as this one), the lead is the only real place to put certain statements which might be supported by the sourcing but aren't explicit in the body. Indeed, many articles are nothing but lead.

  And when one encounters claims in the lead that aren't reflected in the body, but are supported by sourcing in the body (or are so trivially easy to find sources for as this), removing them from the lead only damages the article. I took a look at both! I will note that in Le Madame, there is currently no explicit mention of the club as a meeting site for LGBTQ people in the article. Also, the lead (first section) includes information that is not otherwise in the article. More info is available at MOS:INTRO, but essentially the lead should summarize the main points of the article and not include lots of extra information not in the body.

I've changed it so that it transcludes the appropriate sections from Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies/Recognized content, so it should update automatically now with all featured and good articles. (I will also add a link to WP:LGBT/Editing suggesting the former featured and good articles lists as targets for improvement.) The only section that still consists of a manual list is DYK, because the Recognized Content report currently has only article titles, not the full DYK facts. I've tried tweaking the settings for the bot, including switching to the full DYK option, as well as creating a new report specifically optimized for transclusion here at Wikipedia:WikiProject_LGBT_studies/gallery. This article is meant to be a much-needed overview/analysis of the genre, in particular its history, but is now not much more than a list (which itself began as a jumping-off point, but editors continue to add authors and titles instead of actual content). Hello, so I've just created the page for Michel Antoine, and while digging into the archives about him, I noticed that the police referred to him using terms that seem to indicate a sexual orientation different from the social and moral norms of the time (probably homosexual?). For example, he's described as having 'tastes contrary to nature' and 'poor morality' when the police address these matters.(1) Furthermore, he never married, had no children and has no source about any romantic/sentimental relationship with a woman or nobody in fact in his entire life. On the page you can also see that when Grave describes him, he says he had 'strange manners' of a 'priest mixed with a little girl' or something like this - which is maybe something related to his gender identity that Grave wouldn't have understood ? However, all of this is difficult to source directly, but I was wondering if you integrate these types of profiles into the project at all, which are not sourced but like probable I would say like it's not unfair to assume this I feel like ? Requesting secondary opinions on Puberty Blocker where an editor and I are in a rather heated debate.

He was, to my understanding, persistently removing text from the lead saying that They have been shown to reduce depression and suicidality in transgender and nonbinary youth. because, despite it being backed up in the body by systemic and narrative medical reviews, it's also backed inline by refs to primary sources. His position, to my perception, appears to be that because the certainty of evidence is also described as low in the body, with several unknowns on a longterm scale, that this contradicts all else and that the statement - which he sees as only backed by primary sources - should be removed, regardless of all citation in the body. My position meanwhile, is that it is supported by top tier sources in the body under LEADFOLLOWSBODY and thus any additional primary sourcing in the lead is superfluous and not at all reflective of the total citation or sourcing for the statement in the lead. He has blanked it several times, saying that ONUS means we need to reestablish consensus for its inclusion, while my counterpoint has been that this information has been on the page (one of the most hotly fought over on wikipedia) for a period of over four years, that is the very spitting image of implicit consensus, and thus he needs to achieve consensus before blanking - otherwise, what would be the point of AfD? Anyone could blank a page and say consensus needed to be reestablished before it could be unblanked.

Moved from Special:Permalink/1298115598 § Article titles

It seems that (based on the article talk page where LGBT was moved to LGBTQ) the vast majority of Wikipedia article titles now use the "LGBTQ" form of the initialism (many are listed at Outline of LGBTQ topics). I propose that it's worth stating on the style guide here that "LGBTQ" has become the standard initialism for article titles on English Wikipedia, in order to avoid talk page debates around LGBT vs LGBTQ vs LGBTQ+ on every article talk page with some form of the initialism somewhere in the title (see for example here). Alternatively, since many feel strongly that LGBTQ+ be the standard, should that be implemented across English Wikipedia as the recommended guideline for the titles of articles on LGBTQ topics? Hello fellow WT:LGBTQ+ people and watchers, relatedly to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBTQ+ studies#Improving visibility of Alerts report, which was a result of a recent example of a CfD discussion that went unnoticed by WP:LGBTQ+ members for 2 full relists until @Marcocapelle came here and posted a notice and attended the CfD for a rather pertinent discussion, I also stumbled across the somewhat internal to the project talk pages that have had some discussions where people missed the notice to come here instead since those sub-talks are mostly unmonitored.

So I WP:BOLDly centralized the splintered Wikipedia talk pages (for the visible primary pages) for the sub-project pages under Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBTQ+ studies (i.e. the talk pages of WP:LGBTQ+/Collaboration, WP:LGBTQ+/Editing,..) to here (WT:LGBTQ+) with redirects and archived old existing discussions from the few pages that had some (most didn't). I also moved the one right above here as it was more recent and relevant and a good example of why the separate talk pages that are mostly unmonitored on the sub-pages were not much use and people have missed the banner at the top of those asking them to come here, so instead of having the manual banner, just doing a straight redirect to this talk page here made more sense as is also done on some other WikiProjects, so that no discussions get missed in the future. Based on the above-linked discussion, the WP:LGBTQ+/Alerts report does have the visibility it should. One option to increase its visibility would be to make it one of the main project navigation tabs above. Some of the stuff in LGBTQ retirement issues, particularly the healthcare and trans issues section, seem like they'd be better suited to the LGBTQ aging article. Should we merge the entire retirement issues article into the aging article? Alternatively, may I move just those sections?

I'd personally support a merger, because it would allow for more elaboration on retirement issues in other countries, but I can also see the argument that both are valid topics to exist on their own.

One article is all about LGBTQ retirement issues in the United States (it was a bit confusing that you piped the link removing the "in the United States]] in your post). Including the sections you mentioned, so a merge/move doesn't make much sense.

You are welcome to expand the LGBTQ ageing article to add broad (non-US exclusive) details about different aspects not currently covered there, but I don't see how merging content that points out specific US policies such as Medicare into a global article will improve it.

That being said, the current LGBTQ ageing article is indeed in need of some TLC and updating, so hopefully some people get some moments to help improve it. Raladic (talk) 03:48, 27 July 2025 (UTC)

Only remove content from the country-specific article if it isn't, otherwise leave it there. Also what we commonly do is have more broad articles that have high-level summaries having links to more specific (like e.g. country specific) articles that then go into more detail. E.g. Violence against transgender people as the broad article and you see the By country section has briefer summaries with hat-note links to the more precise country specific articles, e.g. Violence against transgender people in the United States and so on. I just discovered, to my great astonishment, that there was no Category for "LGBTQ activists" - i.e. LGBTQ individuals who are activists in any field, including LGBTQ rights. Needless to say, we do have Category:LGBTQ rights activists - which includes many individuals who are not themselves LGBTQ. And of course we also have countless other subcats of Category:LGBTQ people by occupation.

To remedy this major gap in the Category structure, I am about to create Category:LGBTQ activists. However, this will be a massive undertaking, especially since it will need to have subcats by nationality. So I thought I had better give you folks a heads-up on this, as it is way more than I can take on by myself. So please lend a hand - both hands if possible! I think those should be renamed to List of rainbow crossings in X, since they’ll inherently be list-articles (whether they use sections, bullets or tables, unless they actually encyclopedically have enough notable content like say Rainbow crossings in Seattle.

Do note that I did create List of rainbow crossings two years ago, but at the time AfD consensus resulted in merging it into Rainbow crossing where is still is now - maybe consensus may have changed over the last two years and we could consider the split back out again?
