Record of assistant coaches filling in on an interim basis
As I recall, the NBA recognizes an assistant coach's record, who is filling in for the head coach on an interim basis, as part of the head cosch's record. For example, when Steve Kerr took a medical leave of absence at the beginning of the 2015–16 season, assistant coach Luke Walton compiled a 39–4 record in his absence. Walton's record is not included under the Head coaching record section of his page, but is included as part of Kerr's record on his page, which both correlate with and . Gregg Popovich took a similar leave of absence during the 2024–25 season, with Mitch Johnson filling in on an interim basis (eventually being hired to replace Popovich). However, Popovich's page shows a record of 2–3 and Johnson's page a record of 32–45 for the season, neither of which match and . Does anyone know why this discrepancy exists? Did the NBA change their policy or do Popovich's and Johnson's pages need to be updated? Assadzadeh (talk) 06:35, 3 July 2025 (UTC)

- Mercury News says
Kerr was credited with the wins Walton accumulated.
Might be worth mentioning that somewhere in Kerr's and Walton's articles if not already so. Left guide (talk) 12:38, 3 July 2025 (UTC)- Kerr's and Walton's articles both include statements about the record being attributed to Kerr. My concern was with the Popovich and Johnson articles (and also List of current NBA head coaches). It seems that per (which I missed in the Popovich article), Johnson has retroactively been credited with the record. So, as of now, Basketball Reference is incorrect. Portland's new WNBA team
I've already asked the following question on the WNBA project page, but wanted to get opinions from a wider audience.
Speculation is that Portland's new WNBA team, scheduled to begin play next year, will be named the "Fire", reprising the name of the original team from 2000 to 2002. Assuming it's accurate, would it be better to merge "Portland Fire" and "Portland WNBA team" into one article or to rename the latter to something like "Portland Fire (2026)" and leave the former as is? Assadzadeh (talk) 20:19, 21 June 2025 (UTC)
- Shouldn't the older team be the one that's disambiguated, while the new team assumes to be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC? Howard the Duck (talk) 21:25, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

Positions in opening sentence
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but should positions be noted in opening sentences? I.E., Nikola Jokić is a Serbian professional basketball player who is a center for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). I applied the same format to the current Wizards roster, seeing as it exists without issue on one of the league's most viewed player pages, but was reverted by an IP. — Dissident93 (talk) 15:36, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- I WP:DON'TLIKEIT, but that doesn't matter. It seems to be standard among all the other sports to list positions. It seems to be established consensus to mention the position(s) Therefore, it should be added.-UCO2009bluejay (talk) 16:41, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- I thought part of the reason for the above ANI notice was because the user was adding positions in opening sentences, which most editors were against and due to the lack of communication from the user, the proposal for an indefinite block. If so, then adding positions is contrary to the objective of the ANI. Assadzadeh (talk) 21:15, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
No.It's positions in short descriptions that have been mainly getting pushback, at least as far as that user/ANI is concerned. At any rate, ANI doesn't (or isn't intended to) rule on content. Left guide (talk) 22:05, 8 July 2025 (UTC) edited 00:12, 9 July 2025- Minor correction: I did find a lead sentence position change, but those don't seem to be as frequent or controversial as the SD position changes. - Yeah having it in the short description is too much.-UCO2009bluejay (talk) 01:58, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- I don’t think it is necessary to include the position in the first sentence (feels like it could be elsewhere in the lead), but I’m not hard set against it and I think the wording that user:Dissident93 proposes is probably the best way to do it if you are going to. I would be against using language like “is a Serbian basketball center …” I think the positions are not universally known and need to be called out as positions specifically, whereas “player” is universal. I think it gets tricky for individuals who play more than one position, though (which is kind of a lot). We definitely don’t need position in the short description. Rikster2 (talk) 17:41, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- I'd argue that "player" is more WP:MTAU-friendly than a specific position, if we had to choose between the two. Not all readers are as knowledgeable about basketball as most of us project regulars. Left guide (talk) 18:47, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, avoid the "Serbian basketball center" MOS:SEAOFBLUE. —Bagumba (talk) 02:41, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Positions are in the infobox, so it seems significant enough to have in lead too. Multiple positions can use similar guidance as at WP:NBAPOSITION. —Bagumba (talk) 02:43, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- I personally disagree, especially because of the complication of multiple positions. The current policy works well for the infobox because it's a single field with only one thing in it, so you can list multiple positions without it looking weird. For example, Harden says "point guard / shooting guard", but in prose, it would probably look something like "James Edward Harden Jr. (born August 26, 1989) is an American professional basketball player who is a point guard and shooting guard for the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA)." That's way clunkier and doesn't look great. If people want to know, the infobox is right there. Ladtrack (talk) 21:50, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE says:
—Bagumba (talk) 00:50, 13 July 2025 (UTC)The purpose of an infobox is to summarize, but not supplant, the key facts that appear in an article.

#Jersey Numbers above included some discussion of this. Left guide (talk) 01:09, 13 July 2025 (UTC)There will be exceptions where a piece of key specialised information may be placed in the infobox, but is difficult to integrate into the body text.
- FWIW, GAs Devin Hester (NFL) and Cody Bellinger (MLB) have multiple positions mentioned in their lead sentences. —Bagumba (talk) 11:46, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- I think it comes down to how central it is to their notability in sources per MOS:LEADREL:
In the NFL, positions tend to have a more specialized and unique role. Hester seems to be known as a prolific returner; don't know much about Bellinger. For basketball with someone like LeBron James, his position may not be all that important to discuss in the lead, unless it's prominently highlighted in most sources. Naturally, the first paragraph has higher standards for due weight than the lead in general. Left guide (talk) 17:01, 13 July 2025 (UTC)According to the policy on due weight, emphasis given to material should reflect its relative importance to the subject, according to published reliable sources. This is true for both the lead section and the body of the article.

WikiProject logo
This is a bit of a minor complaint, but I think the File:WikiProject NBA.svg logo looks really bad. The kerning, font, and colors are all just not really good looking to me. The actual lettermark logo of the NBA is available to use (File:NBA script.svg). Would it be an issue to replace the WikiProject banner's logo? ArtemisiaGentileschiFan (talk) 13:57, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- @ArtemisiaGentileschiFan: It depends on the copyright status; non-free images generally can't be used outside of articles, but the licensing tags on File:NBA script.svg may indicate looser restrictions. Category:Children of basketball players
An editor has recreated Category:Children of basketball players (including similar categories), which was previously deleted in April 2023. The original creator was blocked on 18 April 2023, and current creator's account was created the same day. I have a suspicion that it is the same person. – sbaio 14:57, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Not a good or necessary category IMO. Too broad. Rikster2 (talk) 15:05, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- I've blocked the latest account as a sock per WP:DUCK. The first account was only blocked for three hours by Ohnoitsjamie, and expired by the time the new account was created. I've left that account unblocked. Technically, the category was only deleted because it was empty.. —Bagumba (talk) 16:12, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- I don't spend much time dealing with categories, but I had some doubts as to whether that was an appropriate one. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:44, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- From a content standpoint, the most relevant policy or guideline I could find is WP:CAAP#D:
So, is this a defining characteristic? Left guide (talk) 18:41, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Biographical articles should be categorized by defining characteristics. As a rule of thumb for main biographies this includes the reason(s) for the person's notability; i.e., the characteristics the person is best known for.
- Since there is already List of second-generation NBA players, what additional players would the Category include that are not already linked to in the List article? Assadzadeh (talk) 19:39, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
So if a player’s father or mother played major college basketball do they get the category? Is it only professionally? If this category is going to stay it needs to be defined and perhaps re-named. But I don’t think it should exist. Rikster2 (talk) 02:13, 30 July 2025 (UTC)

Listing Hall of Famers in Finals articles
I noticed that when listing Hall of Famers that participated in a given NBA Finals series, players in that series who were later inducted as a coach are listed, but it is mentioned that they were inducted as a coach. This seems like a good idea to me. However, players that were later inducted as a contributor are also listed but seem to not have that mentioned, even though they too were not inducted for their playing career. Is this a purposeful choice, or a mistake? Ladtrack (talk) 00:37, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Ladtrack: Can you please provide examples? That would make it much easier for me to understand what is being asked. Left guide (talk) 00:54, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- Sure. On the article 1966 NBA Finals, Don Nelson is listed as a Celtics Hall of Famer, with a note that he is listed as a coach. Satch Sanders is also listed, but without any notes; he is in the Hall as a contributor, not a player. Sanders also doesn't have any notes in the other 60s Finals he played in. Similarly, Larry Costello is also listed as a regular Hall of Famer and not a contributor in the 1967 Finals. I was just wondering if this was on purpose or not. Ladtrack (talk) 04:53, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- Spot-checking some random versions of the 1966 NBA Finals article history, it looks like "coach" and "as a coach" have been variously added to the infobox. The first iteration I could find was this 2014 edit by Robert4565, who hasn't edited in over five years. I suspect the setup may simply be a consensus formed through editing. Remember, all of the edits are voluntary, and perhaps the past interested editor(s) care more about coaches than contributors. Is there a specific way you'd like to see the data presented? Left guide (talk) 07:32, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- I just figured that "contributor" should probably also be there, since the point of "coach" being there is to show that the player wasn't inducted as a player and contributor is the same situation. I was going to add it myself but I know a lot of the infoboxes for this sort of thing are made through consensus so I figured I should check if that was the case before I did it. Ladtrack (talk) 07:48, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- For player infoboxes (especially current players) there seems to be a great deal of project discussion and standardization. But for very old individual Finals articles, I'm doubtful; they're relatively low-traffic pages, and there's nothing at WP:NBASTYLE about them. You could be bold, or alternatively wait a week or so to be sure there's consensus (which may come in the form of silence). It might also be worth double-checking by searching some key words in the archives; I did this for a little bit and couldn't find any relevant past discussion, but I can't guarantee my search was comprehensive. Left guide (talk) 08:00, 10 August 2025 (UTC)

- It depends; I'm not convinced that Gary Payton and Karl Malone being eventual HoFers is relevant or important enough to the 2004 NBA Finals to merit infobox inclusion, but at a project level, discretionary decisions are nearly impossible to enforce, so we tend to go with all-or-nothing. - There's absolutely no reason for these to exist on team season articles. I counted 22 teams on the chart, and using the Sonics as an example (which is where these appear to have been added), there's only one column and one row pertaining to the Sonics. Calculator math says there's 484 cells, with roughly 44 related to the Sonics. In other words, only 9 percent of the chart has anything to do with the Sonics. Same goes for any other team season article this is on. Left guide (talk) 06:50, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

- There'd be arguments on NBA/US exceptionalism here, so I would not do just that. This is standard fare for sports leagues season articles for the rest of the world though. We also have Module:Sports results for this purpose, as the one that's being used is hardcoded. Howard the Duck (talk) 17:19, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- For leagues such as the NFL it would be completely unneccessary. However, you keep bringing up NBA/US exceptionalism. What argument are you referring to? UCO2009bluejay (talk) 19:47, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- US sports leagues are presented differently from sports leagues from the rest of the world. Compare for example, 2024–25 EuroLeague vs. 2024–25 NBA season.
- Euroleague has a "Teams" section, while NBA doesn't. Argument is NBA is on franchise model, so this is not needed. (EuroLeague is mostly franchise model by now either way).
- Both articles have a "Regular season" section, but EuroLeague uses the Module:Sports results family of templates, while the NBA has its own thing. Regular season results are also presented for EuroLeague, but NBA does not. Argument is NBA has 82 games, so this is not feasible; counterargumnt is the hardcoded table above. Amazingly, in the 2024 NBA Cup, the NBA does use these templates!
- Both articles have a "Play in" section, with the exactly the same tournament format, but use different bracket templates (LOL).
- NBA has "Arena changes" section, EuroLeague does not. Argument is this can be presented in a "Teams" section that the NBA does not have.
- NBA has a "Media" section, EuroLeague does not, but should.
- There's also subtle differences where the 2025 NBA Finals used to link to team season articles on the WP:LEAD, e.g. 2024–25 Indiana Pacers season (instead of Indiana Pacers), while 2025 EuroLeague Final Four links to team articles directly, e.g. Fenerbahçe S.K.. This was changed to what the rest of the world expected, but once the NBA Finals rolls off ITN, I'd expect the regulars to revert it back to old version (see Talk:2025 NBA Finals#No wikilink to teams). Howard the Duck (talk) 20:25, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah but WP:CCC. I really don't care either way as long as it is off of the team pages, primarily because it isn't modulized. I figured it was a worthwile question to ask.- UCO2009bluejay (talk) 22:14, 10 July 2025 (UTC)

Applying the project to articles
I have been auditing NBA player articles - basically making minor edits, updating formatting, etc. I started with Z backwards alphabetically and am through T. My question is this - how to handle ABA players and to a lesser extent BAA players who never played in the NBA proper. Should these players have the NBA project added or should WP:WikiProject Basketball be added instead? So far I have been leaving the Talk pages as they are were - some have had NBA, some basketball. Thoughts? Rikster2 (talk) 16:03, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
- The NBA references the BAA's founding year (1946) for its anniversary celebrations, so it would make sense to include the BAA to this project. I'd be inclined to include the ABA into this project, though the NBA tried to position the NBL and ABA teams that joined to be more expansion than a merger. It seems the NBA acknowledges the ABA history during anniversary celebrations, even if it hasn't fully recognized its stats. —Bagumba (talk) 07:25, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- I actually meant to say NBL, not BAA. Pretty sure most of the official NBA guides count the first years of the BAA as NBA seasons. Good correction. Rikster2 (talk) 12:26, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- For ABA and NBL, I'm neutral. My main (only?) active interest in project tagging is so Wikipedia:WikiProject National Basketball Association/Article alerts doesn't get inundated with remotely related stuff, e.g. WNBA. I can see the argument either way w/ ABA/NBL, depending on whether you treat it as a merger or not. —Bagumba (talk) 15:36, 22 August 2025 (UTC)

Help needed regarding links to NBA website (templates)
I need some help regarding external weblinks to the NBA website on the German Wikipedia (I already asked there, but so far no feedback at all): I noticed they have have a template which is supposed to link to the player profile, e.g. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/tim_thomas/index.html now, these links no longer work. They have a second template which links to stats pages, e.g. https://www.nba.com/stats/player/2735/career, these work fine. Now my question is: What about the first link/template, is there like a direct replacement for those old profiles or are these pages just gone? I found the general player search at https://www.nba.com/players there "Tim Thomas" links to https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1501/career. So that would be the link you get if you use that other (second) template. Bthfan (talk) 08:39, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, lots of old NBA.com links no longer work. NBA.com has moved pages around repeatedly over the years. (Here's one of many prior discussions.) The working NBA.com player profiles all have some sort of player ID number (e.g., 1501 for Tim Thomas). Hopefully, NBA.com doesn't change those numbers, because the numbers are now built into Wikidata and elsewhere. Zagalejo (talk) 22:41, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info, then I'll change the stats template to use Wikidata as well and replace the usage of the other template. Wikidata is a really useful tool for those external links against link rot (I've already changed a few other basketball links/templates there to Wikidata). List of historical NBA over-the-air television broadcasters
I want to kill this gross, overdone list at AfD, but I don't feel comfortable doing it without some replacement. Fifteen NBA teams plus Seattle lack their own list of (team) broadcasters, e.g. List of Boston Celtics broadcasters. The teams missing are ATL, DAL, DEN, GSW, HOU, MEM, MIL, OKC, PHI, PHX, POR, SAC, SAS, SEA, UTA, WAS.
The list that I've linked to in the heading is incomplete for a number of teams in terms of TV rights. I can help provide this information and it may even be in articles I've worked on, like WBFS-TV.
Many of the lists that do exist have not been updated since 2019–20 and are proper messes that deserve attention. List of Cleveland Cavaliers broadcasters is probably the best of the bunch. I'm posting here to draw some attention to this family of lists. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 15:40, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- It's always a dilemma on how to handle unsourced content w.r.t. WP:PRESERVE. —Bagumba (talk) 16:43, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- I'm fairly sure I can source the content because newspapers and archives of Broadcasting will cover this material. I added references to List of Arizona Coyotes broadcasters, for instance, on the NHL side, and created List of Utah Mammoth broadcasters today. The formatting of the list is bad enough, but the content is all just kind of thrown in there. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 02:45, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

“Basketball players from” categories
I just removed Category:Basketball players from San Antonio from David Robinson and wanted to check in on this. In my mind, Robinson is not a basketball player from San Antonio - he went there to play pro basketball as an existing player from either/or Key West, Florida (birthplace) and Manassas, Virginia (youth and high school). It feels like violation of the spirit of these categories to say he’s “from” San Antonio, though he did play there a long time and settled there after his retirement. Are there thoughts on this? A similar example is Reggie Miller who has the “basketball players from Indianapolis” category even though he is actually from California. I think the purpose of these categories is more to show where these players were “produced,” but maybe I am alone in that? Rikster2 (talk) 16:09, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- Personally I only that cat if that player was born there, not necessarily if they were produced there, unless they lived long enough. But yeah, they shouldn't be added to those cats because "Category:Team Name players" already exist for that reason. Dieter Lloyd Wexler 16:26, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- Categories are often unclear about their inclusion criteria. FWIW, one of its parent categories, Category:People from San Antonio, reads
The people listed below were all born in, residents of, or otherwise closely associated with the city of San Antonio, Texas.
Not sure if that's consistent or not with other similar categories.—Bagumba (talk) 16:37, 9 October 2025 (UTC)- It is reasonable to say Robinson is “closely associated” with San Antonio, but where does it end? John Havlicek isn’t from Boston, he is from Ohio. And what about somebody like Paul Pierce who played a long time and had a great career in Boston, but was born in Oakland, grew up in LA, was notable as a college All-American in Kansas, and played for three other NBA teams? Should he have categories for all of those places? I am not sure where the wording in the category originated or if any actual consensus was used to create it. Is there a project that governs “place from” categories to ask? Rikster2 (talk) 16:57, 9 October 2025 (UTC)

Position conflicts
At Talk:Joel Embiid#Semi-protected edit request on 1 November 2025, it was noted that Embiid is listed as "Center-Forward" at NBA.com. I've seen cases where basketball-reference lists a position that NBA.com doesn't, but maybe this is a first I remember of NBA.com instead listing a position that b-r does not. There's some editors that believe that the infobox should only list what's at NBA.com (using b-r for details on specific PG, SG, SF, PF breakdown). What should be the general approach for handling players like Embiid (same thread mentions Evan Mobley as being the same case)? —Bagumba (talk) 20:10, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- In my opinion you have to start with NBA.com. That is what their team lists them at, regardless of what anyone else postulates. BBR is a great source for drilling down to the specific guard or forward position. Rikster2 (talk) 00:35, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- In a similar situation, Victor Wembanyama WP page now shows him as F/C. —Bagumba (talk) 18:14, 7 November 2025 (UTC)

- Based on the content you added, it appears that the video coordinator position is part of the coaching staff. In that case, there seems to be some additional coaching parameters available at {{Infobox basketball biography}} that can be added to the existing infobox, so it would just be a matter of expanding the existing infobox I think. Bagumba perhaps you can confirm? Left guide (talk) 08:26, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
