Do we still need to list aspect ratio in TV station subchannel tables?

I'm noticing that the vast majority of TV subchannels, certainly more every day, are presented in widescreen format. Aside from some channels for infomercials and lesser-known diginets (on HC2 stations, for instance), the vast majority of channels on US TV stations are being broadcast in 16:9 aspect ratios. This column to me has become redundant and worth stripping out, but I'd like feedback. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 18:17, 9 February 2026 (UTC)

I already argue that all-paid programming channels should just be noted with the shortest mention (which is why I tended in tables to just note them all at once), and the few remaining 4:3 channels can easily be noted with a color notation under the affiliation column for each channel. It doesn't even have to be a color. It can just be (4:3). Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 22:16, 9 February 2026 (UTC)

Nexstar-Tegna merger closure

The FCC just approved the Nexstar–Tegna merger, which immediately closed (in spite of pending lawsuits). Six stations are earmarked for divestiture: WTHR, WAVY-TV, WUPL, KTVD, WCTX, KNWA-TV. Actions that need to be taken:

  • Updating of station pages
  • Updating of lists
  • Updating of templates
    • Not all pages using {{Tegna}} should have the Nexstar template, pertaining to defunct entities.
  • Category merger
    • A Tegna category should remain as a Nexstar subcategory but only contain defunct entities.

Related, I'd like feedback on whether we need to say that every CW station Nexstar owns, even the small-market station running it on a .2, is an owned-and-operated station. Like, I would not want Special:Diff/1344481797/1344381643 to stick. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 00:41, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
We need to figure out how to list these stations in their own articles and to be ready to change on a dime if there are changes in the court cases. It's clear that what we have right now will need to be changed because we are in this for the long haul.
Proposing a listing of owner as Tegna Inc., a subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group and the listing of Nexstar sister stations with a "Nexstar:" or "Tegna" , e.g. for WGNO, WNOL-TV; Tegna: WWL-TV, WUPL or for WWL-TV, WUPL; Nexstar: WGNO, WNOL-TV.
The Tegna navbox still exists and I'm unsure if perhaps we should change it so it's a sub-box of the Nexstar one as well and separate Nexstar and Tegna stations. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 19:06, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
Support. This had been in the back of my mind for awhile. See Special:Diff/1350076679 and Special:Diff/1350078759 for what I think are the best ways to handle addressing the ledes and the ibx (and in the case of WJW's article, how to summarize in the article body). I would not bolden Tegna in the sister stations field when grouping the stations. Nathan Obral • he/him/🦝 • tc • 04:09, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
A few other thoughts:
  • Converting the Tegna navbox to a subcategory of the Nexstar navbox is the best thing to do given the current situation. It should not be hard to do and am willing to make the conversion.
  • Given how Nexstar is close to owning the majority of CW affiliates with the Tegna subsidiary, it makes no sense to label them as owned-and-operated stations. Certainly not on subchannels and on Mission-owned stations.

  • Support I agree with nesting the Tegna template within Nexstar's for now (It'll make it easier to merge if that comes to pass anyways), and we're getting to that crosspoint where 'O&O of the CW' now looks MyNetworkTV-like absurd in noting as an O&O. I suggest mentions of main-channel carriage having the lede re-written like WNOL-TV (channel 38)...owned by Nexstar Media Group and carrying its broadcast network, The CW for a more natural flow, stating ownership and affiliation without elaboration.
