Après avoir débuté dans l’atelier de voiture de son père, il devient l’élève du peintre Gilbert Stuart. Il vécut dans la région de Boston, puis déménagea à New York en . Il enseigna sa fille Sarah C. Frothingham qui devint peintre miniaturiste.
